Described is a silica-based athermal 100 GHz-spacing 40-channel arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-synchronised configuration that employs resin-filled grooves in the AWG and MZI. By suppressing the groove excess loss and using 1.5%-Delta waveguides, a low insertion loss of 3.2 dB and a wide 0.5 dB bandwidth of 45.9 GHz with athermal operation in the -5 to 65degC range and a compact chip size were achieved. 相似文献

We describe a compact 1.5%-/spl Delta/ athermal silica-based 100-GHz-spacing 16-channel arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multi/demultiplexer with a modified groove design for a very low excess loss. We propose new approaches for modifying the shape of the grooves and the arrayed waveguides and optimize the shape modifications for 1.5%-/spl Delta/ waveguides. By employing this modified groove design, we greatly reduced the groove excess loss from 1.9 to 0.4 dB in the 1.5%-/spl Delta/ athermal AWG. 相似文献

A novel method for fabricating an athermal AWG is proposed, using a unique apparatus for ITU-T center wavelength adjustment and optical coupling of two cut-parts. UV adhesive or sticky gel is applied into the gap between the cut-elements and the alignment base substrate by capillary infiltration. The spectrum profiles are almost the same as those of the original chip state, and no deterioration is observed resulting from athermalization. Flat-top athermal AWG modules of 100 GHz×40 ch are fabricated. Over a temperature range of-40 to 85℃, the center wavelength shift is±22 pm, and the insertion loss change is less than ±0.11 dB. 相似文献

A small and low-loss athermal AWG is demonstrated based on super-high-/spl Delta/ waveguides. Resin-filled trenches are formed in the slab region to compensate for the temperature-dependent wavelength shift. This paper proposes a cascade-connected arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) as a solution to the problem of crosstalk accumulation in a large-scale AWG multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) and demonstrates a 64-channel cascaded AWG module with a very low background crosstalk of less than -80 dB and a total crosstalk of about -34 dB. In this paper, the authors densely integrate 64 additional compactly designed crosstalk-suppressing AWGs whose bandwidths were carefully optimized and directly attach them to a conventional 64-channel AWG. Consequently, in addition to a very low crosstalk, a low insertion loss and a compact size without passband shape distortion are achieved with this module. Based on the performance of the cascaded AWG module, it is then estimated that it is possible to realize a 1000-channel AWG MUX/DEMUX that is free from the problem of crosstalk accumulation. 相似文献

An athermal arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer relying on an all-polymer approach is reported. The all-polymer AWG consisting of polymer waveguides fabricated on a polymer substrate exhibits excellent performance. This study demonstrates the application of a temperature-independent arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) using a simple hybrid waveguide structure composed of silica core/inorganic-organic hybrid material overcladding layer. The thermooptic effect of the hybrid materials varies over a wide range of temperature and provides athermal characteristics in an AWG. We propose and demonstrate a very low insertion loss silica-based arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) achieved using a novel structure, which has vertically tapered waveguides between arrayed-waveguides to reduce the slab-to-arrayed-waveguide transition loss. A spot-size converter is also incorporated in the AWG to reduce the fiber-to-waveguide coupling loss. The structure can be formed by a process involving the conventional photolithography and reactive ion etching. The structure provided a loss reduction of 1.5 dB. In this paper, the RIE process has been improved. By using the steam-redissolution technique, the insertion loss and the crosstalk have been reduced. Experimental results show that the central wavelength is 1550.86 nm, the channel spectral response flatness is about 1.5 dB, 3-dB bandwidth is about 0.478 nm, insertion loss is 10.5 dB, and crosstalk is about-22 dB. The insertion loss of an AWG device is reduced by about 3 dB for the central channel and 4.5 dB for the edge channels, and the crosstalk is reduced by 2.5 dB after the steam- redissolution. 相似文献

We propose a new loss reduction method in star couplers employing UV-written tapers that replace the free propagation region in the conventional star couplers and apply them to an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device.
