Micrometer‐ and nanometer‐Al2O3‐particle‐filled poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) composites with filler volume fractions ranging from 1 to 12.5 vol % were prepared by hot compression molding. We evaluated the tribological behaviors of the PPESK composites with the block‐on‐ring test rig by sliding PPESK‐based composite blocks against a mild carbon steel ring under dry‐friction conditions. The effects of different temperatures on the wear rate of the PPESK composites were also investigated with a ball‐on‐disc test rig. The wear debris and the worn surfaces of the PPESK composites were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, and the structures of the PPESK composites were analyzed with IR spectra. The lowest wear rate, 7.31 × 10?6 mm3 N?1 m?1, was obtained for the composite filled with 1 vol %‐nanometer Al2O3 particles. The composite with nanometer particles exhibited a higher friction coefficient (0.58–0.64) than unfilled PPESK (0.55). The wear rate of 1 vol %‐nanometer‐Al2O3‐particle‐filled PPESK was stable and was lower than that of unfilled PPESK from the ambient temperature to 270°C. We anticipate that 1 vol %‐nanometer‐Al2O3‐particle‐filled PPESK can be used as a good frictional material. We also found that micrometer‐Al2O3‐particle‐filled PPESK had a lower friction coefficient at a filler volume fraction below 5%. The filling of micrometer Al2O3 particles greatly increased the wear resistance of PPESK under filler volume fractions from 1 to 12.5%. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polydopamine (PDA) was employed to modify micrometric Al2O3 platelets to improve the interfacial compatibility between α‐Al2O3 powder and ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The structure of PDA‐coated Al2O3 and UHMWPE composites was investigated via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The thermal stability and mechanical performance of the samples were also evaluated. It is clear that UHMWPE/PDA‐Al2O3 composites exhibit better mechanical properties, higher thermal stability and higher thermal conductivity than UHMWPE/Al2O3 composites, owing to the good dispersion of Al2O3 powder in the UHMWPE matrix and the strong interfacial force between the macromolecules and the inorganic filler caused by the presence of PDA. The tensile strength and the tensile elongation at break of UHMWPE/PDA‐Al2O3 composite with 1 wt% PDA‐Al2O3 are 62.508 MPa and 462%, which are 1.96 and 1.98 times higher than those of pure UHMWPE, respectively. The thermal conductivity of UHMWPE/PDA‐Al2O3 composite increases from 0.38 to 0.52 W m?1 K?1 with an increase in the dosage of PDA‐Al2O3 to 20 wt%. The results show that the prepared PDA‐coated Al2O3 powder can simultaneously enhance the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of UHMWPE. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In this article, we report the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of injection‐molded high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with 40 wt % ceramic filler [hydroxyapatite (HA) and/or Al2O3] and 2 wt % titanate as a coupling agent. The mechanical property measurements revealed that a combination of a maximum tensile strength of 18.7 MPa and a maximum tensile modulus of about 855 MPa could be achieved with the injection‐molded HDPE–20 wt % HA–20 wt % Al2O3 composites. For the same composite composition, the maximum compression strength was determined to be 71.6 MPa and the compression modulus was about 660 MPa. The fractrography study revealed the uniform distribution of ceramic fillers in the semicrystalline HDPE matrix. The cytocompatibility study with osteoblast‐like SaOS2 cells confirmed extensive cell adhesion and proliferation on the injection‐molded HDPE–20 wt % HA–20 wt % Al2O3 composites. The cell viability analysis with the 3(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay revealed a statistically significant difference between the injection‐molded HDPE–20 wt % HA–20 wt % Al2O3 composites and sintered HA for various culture durations of upto 7 days. The difference in cytocompatibility properties among the biocomposites is explained in terms of the difference in the protein absorption behavior. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. SiO2 nanoparticle filled–poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) composites with various filler volume fractions were made by heating compression molding. The tribological behavior of the PPESK composites was investigated using a block‐on‐ring test rig by sliding PPESK‐based composite blocks against a mild carbon steel ring. The morphologies of the worn composite surfaces, wear debris, and the transferred films formed on the counterpart steel surface were examined with a scanning electron microscope, whereas the chemical state of the Fe element in the transfer film was analyzed with X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, IR spectra were taken to characterize the structure of wear debris and PPESK composites. It was found that SiO2 nanoparticle filled–PPESK composites exhibit good wear resistance and friction‐reduction behavior. The friction and wear behavior of the composites was improved at a volume fraction between 4.2 and 14.5 vol % of the filler SiO2. The results based on combined SEM, XPS, and IR techniques indicate that SiO2 nanoparticle filled–PPESK composite is characterized by slight scuffing in dry sliding against steel and polishing action between composite surface and that of the countpart ring, whereas unfilled PPESK is characterized by severe plastic deformation and adhesion wear. In the former case a thin, but not complete, transfer film was formed on the surface of the counterpart steel, whereas in the latter case, a thick and lumpy transfer film was formed on the counterpart steel surface. This accounts for the different friction and wear behavior of unfilled PPESK and SiO2 nanoparticle filled–PPESK composites. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Oxidation induced crack healing of Al2O3 composites loaded with a MAX phase based repair filler (Ti2Al0.5Sn0.5C) was examined. The fracture strength of 20 vol% repair filler loaded composites containing artificial indent cracks recovered fully to the level of the virgin material upon isothermal annealing in air atmosphere after 48 h at 700°C and 0.5 h at 900°C. SEM‐EBSD analysis of crack microstructure indicates two different oxidation reaction regimes to govern the crack filling: near the surface SnO2, TiO2, and Al2O3 were formed whereas deeply inside the cracks Al2O3 and TiO2 and metallic Sn were detected. The presence of elemental Sn was attributed to partial oxidation of aluminum and titanium which lowered the local oxygen concentration below a threshold value required for Sn oxidation to SnO2. Thus, Ti2Al0.5Sn0.5C may represent an efficient repair filler system to trigger oxidation induced crack healing in ceramic composites at temperatures below 1000°C.  相似文献

Thermally and chemically durable hydrophobic oleophobic coatings, containing different ceramic particles such as SiO2, SiC, Al2O3, which can be alternative instead of Teflon, have been developed and applied on the aluminum substrates by spin‐coating method. Polyimides, which are high‐thermal resistant heteroaromatic polymers, were synthesized, and fluor oligomers were added to these polymers to obtain hydrophobic–oleophobic properties. After coating, Al surface was subjected to Taber‐abrasion, adhesion, corrosion, and thermal tests. The effects of the particle size of ceramic powders, organic matrix, and heat on the coating material were investigated. Coating material was characterized by FTIR spectrophotometer. Surface properties and thermal resistance of the coating materials were investigated by SEM and TGA analyses. After thermal curing, contact angles of these coatings with H2O and n‐hexadecane were measured. It was observed that coatings like ceramic particles are more resistant against scratch and abrasion than the other coatings. Also, they are harder than coatings, which do not include ceramic particles. It was seen that coatings, containing Fluorolink D10H, have high‐contact angles with water and n‐hexadecane. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 2386–2392, 2006  相似文献

Gradient cermet composites possessing high surface hardness, flexural strength and interface bonding strength were fabricated using vacuum hot-pressing sintering. Ball-on-disk tests were performed to investigate the tribological properties of the gradient cermet composites against 440 C stainless steel, Al2O3 and Si3N4 balls at different sliding speed and load in comparison with traditional Ti(C,N) cermets. The tribological behavior was characterized in terms of friction coefficient and wear rate. The results showed that friction coefficient was significantly dependent on the sliding speed and load when sliding against Al2O3 and Si3N4. However, there was no obvious relation between them during sliding against 440 C stainless steel due to the formation of metal adhesive layer. Gradient cermet composites exhibited a higher friction coefficient but lower wear rate than traditional Ti(C,N) cermets. The main wear mechanism of gradient cermet composites was adhesion wear during sliding against 440 C stainless steel, while abrasion wear was the predominant mechanism during sliding against Al2O3 and Si3N4. It was expected that gradient cermet composites would be excellent candidates for cutting tool materials.  相似文献

The wear and friction properties of poly (ether‐ether‐ketone) (PEEK) reinforced with 0–33 vol % (60 wt %) micron size Al2O3 composites were evaluated at a sliding speed of 1.0 m/s and nominal pressure from 0.5 to 1.25 MPa under dry sliding conditions using a pin‐on‐disk wear tester. The wear resistance of the pure PEEK is 10‐fold higher than that of mild steel under the similar test condition. It is improved to 18‐fold as compared with mild steel at 3.5 vol % Al2O3 content. The improvement in wear properties may be attributed to the thin, tenacious, and coherent transfer film formed between the steel countersurface and composite pin. However, the wear resistance of PEEK containing above 3.5 vol % Al2O3 was deteriorated, despite their higher hardness and stiffness as compared with that of composites containing lower Al2O3 content. This is attributed to the formation of thick and noncoherent transfer film, which does not prevent the wear of the composites from hard asperities of countersurface. Moreover, hard Al2O3 particles present in transfer film act as third body wear mechanism. The coefficient of friction of the composites is higher than that of pure PEEK. SEM and optical microscopy have shown that wear of pure PEEK occurs by the mechanism of adhesion mainly whereas of PEEK composites by microploughing and abrasion. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Although the friction and wear behavior of plasma sprayed aluminum matrix ceramic coatings have been extensively discussed in the last decades, only few researches have been carried out the wear mechanisms sliding against different pairs. The tribological behaviors of plasma sprayed Al2O3 coating sliding against ZrO2, Si3N4, Al2O3 and stainless steel balls in air were comparatively investigated in this study. It was showed that Al2O3 coating sliding against different counterparts exhibited diverse tribological behaviors, which could be mainly ascribed to the different mechanical properties of counterparts. Meanwhile, the tribochemical reactions influenced the friction performances significantly. Moreover, the transform of γ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3 occurred during the friction, which was closely related to the coefficient of friction and thermal conductivities of counterparts. The main wear of Al2O3 coating sliding against ceramic materials resulted from the brittle fracture and abrasive wear. While it was dominated by adhesive wear when sliding against stainless steel, and accompanied with abrasive wear.  相似文献

Al2O3/TiC ceramic composites with the additions of CaF2 solid lubricants were produced by hot pressing. The effect of the solid lubricant on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the ceramic composite has been studied. The friction coefficient and wear rates were measured using the ring-block method, and the tribological behaviors were discussed in relation to its mechanical properties and microstructure. Results showed that additions of CaF2 solid lubricants to Al2O3/TiC matrix led to a decrease in the flexural strength, fracture toughness, and hardness compared to a conventional Al2O3/TiC composite. The friction coefficient of Al2O3/TiC/CaF2 ceramic composites when sliding against both cemented carbide and hardened steel decreased with an increase in CaF2 content up to 15 vol.%. The reason is that the CaF2 released and smeared on the wear surface, and acted as solid lubricant film between the sliding couple. When the content of CaF2 solid lubricant is less than 10 vol.%, the wear rate of Al2O3/TiC/CaF2 composites decreases with an increase in CaF2 content, with further increases in CaF2 content, the wear rate of Al2O3/TiC/CaF2 composites increases rapidly. This is due to the large degradation of mechanical properties in samples with high CaF2 contents.  相似文献

To improve the tribological properties of basalt‐fabric‐reinforced phenolic composites, solid lubricants of MoS2 and graphite were incorporated, and the tribological properties of the resulting basalt‐fabric composites were investigated on a model ring‐on‐block test rig under dry sliding conditions. The effects of the filler content, load, and sliding time on the tribological behavior of the basalt‐fabric composites were systematically examined. The morphologies of the worn surfaces and transfer films formed on the counterpart steel rings were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results reveal that the incorporation of MoS2 significantly decreased the friction coefficient, whereas the inclusion of graphite improved the wear resistance remarkably. The results also indicate that the filled basalt‐fabric composites seemed to be more suitable for friction materials serving under higher loads. The transfer films formed on the counterpart surfaces during the friction process made contributions to the reduction of the friction coefficient and wear rate of the basalt‐fabric composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2Y‐TZP/Al2O3 hybrid nanoparticles prepared by CO2 laser covaporization (CoLAVA) were wet mixed with biocompatible lamellar Ta metal particles (20 vol%) and consolidated by spark plasma sintering. The microstructure and mechanical properties of this novel ceramic–metal composite have been studied. The achieved results demonstrate that both the homogeneity of the 2Y‐TZP/Al2O3 nanocomposite matrix and the reinforcement with a micrometer‐sized ductile phase are prerequisites for the successful design and fabrication of ceramic–metal composites with high strength (1300 MPa), enhanced fracture toughness (16 MPa·m1/2), and improved low‐temperature degradation resistance.  相似文献

The commencement of the industrial revolution paved the way for the fabrication of flexible polymers with high‐strength metalloceramics as novel materials of all kinds. Fabricating metal–ceramic/polymer conductive composites is one such dimension followed for the present research work making use of the properties of the three components. Electroless deposition, for permanent metallic coating, was performed to coat Al2O3 with metallic Cu followed by the inclusion of the Cu–Al2O3 filler into a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) matrix. X‐ray diffraction and energy‐dispersive X‐ray studies predicted a prominent growth of metallic Cu crystallites onto Al2O3 with an increased average size and variation in elemental composition, respectively, when compared to pristine Al2O3. Morphological behaviour via scanning electron microscopy also envisioned uniform Cu coating onto Al2O3 and a homogeneous dispersion throughout the polymer matrix. When incorporated into PVC, electrical conductivity analysis highlighted a distinct variation in composite phases from insulating (7.14 × 10?16 S cm?1) to semiconducting behaviour (8.33 × 10?5 S cm?1) as a function of Cu–Al2O3 filler. Mechanical behaviour (tensile strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break) and thermal properties of the prepared composites also indicated a substantial improvement in material strength with Cu–Al2O3 incorporation. The enhanced electrical conductivity along with improved thermomechanical status with significant filler–matrix interaction permits the potential usage of such novel composites in a range of state‐of‐the‐art semiconducting electronic devices. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Micrometer and nanometer TiO2 particle‐filled poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) composites with various filler volume fractions from 0.5 to 7.5 vol % were prepared by heating compression molding. The friction and wear behaviors of the PPESK composites were evaluated using the block‐on‐ring test rig by sliding PPESK‐based composite blocks against a mild carbon steel ring under dry friction conditions. The wear debris and the worn surfaces of the PPESK composites filled with micrometer and nanometer TiO2 particles were investigated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), while the structures of PPESK composites and wear debris were analyzed with IR spectra. Experimental results show that antiwear properties of the PPESK composites can be improved greatly by filling nanometer TiO2 particles, and the friction coefficient decreases when the filler volume fraction is below 2.5%, but when the filler volume fraction is above 2.5% the friction coefficient increases gradually with increasing filler volume fraction. In the case of micrometer TiO2 filler, wear rates increase with increasing filler volume fractions under identical test conditions, and the friction coefficients are less sensitive to the filler volume fraction. It was also found that the wear mechanism of micrometer TiO2 particle‐filled PPESK is mainly severe adhesion and abrasive wear, while that of nanometer TiO2 particle‐filled PPESK is mainly slight abrasive wear. In the former case, there are no transfer film formed on the surface of the counterpart steel, and wear debris are in the form of long and large ribbon. While in the latter case, the wear debris was granule and their size was about 10 μm. In case of 1 vol % nanometer TiO2 particle‐filled PPESK composites, the transfer film was fairly thinner and smoother, and the transfer film provided better coverage on the surface of steel ring, while that of 7.5 vol % was thicker and discrete. These account for the different friction and wear behavior of micrometer and nanometer TiO2 particle‐filled PPESK composite. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The combined effects of ingredient A and C in A + B + C systems where A and C are Al2O3, graphite, MoS2, steel wool and Twaron (aramid pulp), and B is a binder (benzoxazine) on friction performance were studied. Ray design with Golden Section was used for the formulated A + B + C ternary composites. Two combined factors, morphological combinations including fiber/fiber, fiber/filler and filler/filler and combinations by means of material nature including abrasive/abrasive, abrasive/lubricant and lubricant/lubricant, and their composition dependence were considered. Synergetic effects, defined as a minimum wear in wear-composition relationships, were found in morphological combinations of fiber/filler (steel wool/Al2O3/B and Twaron/Graphite/B systems). Synergetic effects producing maximum values in friction coefficient (μ)-composition curves were not found in all combinations. All combinations of lubricant/lubricant and abrasive/abrasive reduce μ and the effects of the combinations of abrasive/lubricant are dependent upon their abrasive or lubricant efficiency. Strong abrasive (Al2O3) plays an important role on the formation of friction layer that the transferred iron from disc to friction materials in combinations of Al2O3/lubricant/B systems, and there is no such a transfer of iron from disc to friction materials on the surface of lubricant/lubricant combinations. The S type friction transition was observed in MoS2/steel wool/B and graphite/steel wool/B systems and was caused by adhesion friction mechanism.  相似文献

Yttria partially stabilized zirconia Y‐PSZ/glass‐ceramic composites were prepared by reaction sintering using powder mixtures of a SiO2–Al2O3–ZnO–CaO–ZrO2–TiO2‐based glass and yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y‐PSZ). The glass crystallized during sintering at temperatures of 1173, 1273, and 1373 K to give a glass‐ceramic matrix for high‐temperature protecting coatings. With the increasing firing time, the added zirconia reacted with the base glass and a glass‐ceramic material with dispersed zircon particles was prepared in situ. Furthermore, the added zirconia changed the crystallization behavior of the base glass, affecting the shape, amount, and distribution of zircon in the microstructure. The bipyramid‐like zircon grains with imbedded residual zirconia particles turned out to have two growth mechanisms: the inward growth and the outward growth, and its rapid growth was mainly dominated by the later one. For comparison, the referenced glass‐ceramic was prepared by sintering using exclusive glass granules and its crystallization behavior at 1173–1373 K was examined as well. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the crystallization behavior of the base glass and the phase evolution of the Y‐PSZ/glass‐ceramic composites.  相似文献

In flowing nitrogen, non‐oxides such as Al4O4C, Al2OC, Zr2Al3C4, and MgAlON bonded Al2O3‐based composites were successfully prepared by a gaseous phase mass transfer pathway using aluminum, zirconia, alumina, and magnesia as raw materials at 1873 K, after an Al–AlN core‐shell structure was formed at 853 K. Resin bonded Al–Al2O3–MgO–ZrO2 composites after sintering were characterized and analyzed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and, energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and the influence of the MgO content on the sintered composites was studied. The results show that after sintering, the phase composition of the Al–Al2O3–ZrO2 composite is Al2O3, Al4O4C, Al2OC, and Zr2Al3C4, while the phase composition of the Al–Al2O3–ZrO2 composite with the addition of MgO 6 wt% and MgO 12 wt% is Al2O3, MgAlON, Al4O4C, Al2OC, and Zr2Al3C4 as well as Al2O3, MgAlON, Al2OC, and Zr2Al3C4, respectively. The addition of MgO changed the phase composition and distribution for the resin bonded Al–Al2O3–MgO–ZrO2 system composites after sintering. When the added MgO content is equal to or more than 12 wt%, the Al4O4C in the resin bonded Al–Al2O3–MgO–ZrO2 system composites is unable to exist in a stable phase.  相似文献

Curing characteristics, tensile properties, morphological studies of tensile fractured surfaces using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the extent of rubber filler interactions of rattan‐powder‐filled natural rubber (NR) composites were investigated as a function of filler loading and silane coupling agent (CA). NR composites were prepared by the incorporation of rattan powder at filler loading range of 0–30 phr into a NR matrix with a laboratory size two roll mill. The results indicate that in the presence of silane CA, scorch time (ts2), and cure time (t90) of rattan‐powder‐filled NR composites were shorten, while, maximum torque (MH) increased compared with NR composites without silane CA. Tensile strength and tensile modulus of composites were enhanced whereas elongation at break reduced in the presence of silane CA mainly due to increase in rubber‐filler interaction. It is proven by SEM studies that the bonding between the filler and rubber matrix has improved. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

In this study, two types of nanoscale α‐Al2O3 particles were used for preparation of α‐Al2O3/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites. These α‐Al2O3 particles were either coated or uncoated with stearic acid. For the uncoated α‐Al2O3/TPU composite, the results of field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) and energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometry indicate that uncoated α‐Al2O3 particles are significantly aggregated together. This aggregation is due to the poor compatibility between the inorganic filler (α‐Al2O3) and the organic matrix (TPU). The size of clusters is in the range from 5 to 20 μm. For the coated α‐Al2O3/TPU composite, FE‐SEM results indicate that most coated α‐Al2O3 particles are well dispersed in the TPU matrix. This phenomenon results from the effect of surface modifier (i.e., stearic acid) on α‐Al2O3 particles. Stearic acid can act as a compatibilizer to bridge the boundary between the TPU matrix and the α‐Al2O3 particle. Stearic acid is not only a suitable surface modifier for the nanoscale α‐Al2O3 particle, but also a good dispersant for the dispersion of nanoscale α‐Al2O3 particles in the TPU matrix. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites of nanometer‐sized silica (SiO2) filler incorporated in nylon‐6 polymer were prepared by compression molding. Their friction and wear properties were investigated on a pin on disk tribometer by running a flat pin of steel against a composite disc. The morphologies of the composites as well as of the wear track were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The addition of 2 wt % SiO2 resulted in a friction reduction (μ) from 0.5 to 0.18 when compared with neat nylon‐6. This low silica loading led to a reduction in wear rate by a factor of 140, whereas the influence of higher silica loadings was less pronounced. The smooth morphology obtained after the wear test indicated the negligible contribution to friction of the pin to the nanocomposite. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
