We present an efficient algorithm for 4-coloring perfect planar graphs. The best previously known algorithm for this problem takesO(n 3/2) sequential time, orO(log4 n) parallel time withO(n3) processors. The sequential implementation of our algorithm takesO(n logn) time. The parallel implementation of our algorithm takesO(log3 n) time withO(n) processors on a PRAM.  相似文献

The main results of this paper are efficient parallel algorithms, MSP and LOCATE, for computing minimal spanning trees and locating minimal paths in directed graphs, respectively. Algorithm MSP has time complexityO(log3 n) usingO(n 3/logn) processors, while LOCATE has time complexityO(logn) usingO(n 2) processors. Algorithm MSP is derived from sequential algorithms, when the unbounded parallelism model is used.  相似文献

We present a parallel algorithm for solving the minimum weighted completion time scheduling problem for transitive series parallel graphs. The algorithm takesO(log2 n) time withO(n 3) processors on a CREW PRAM, wheren is the number of vertices of the input graph. This is the first NC algorithm for solving the problem.Research supported in part by NSF Grants CCR-9011214 and CCR-9205982.  相似文献

Previous research on developing parallel triangulation algorithms concentrated on triangulating planar point sets.O(log3 n) running time algorithms usingO(n) processors have been developed in Refs. 1 and 2. Atallah and Goodrich(3) presented a data structure that can be viewed as a parallel analogue of the sequential plane-sweeping paradigm, which can be used to triangulate a planar point set inO(logn loglogn) time usingO(n) processors. Recently Merks(4) described an algorithm for triangulating point sets which runs inO(logn) time usingO(n) processors, and is thus optimal. In this paper we develop a parallel algorithm for triangulating simplicial point sets in arbitrary dimensions based on the idea of the sequential algorithm presented in Ref. 5. The algorithm runs inO(log2 n) time usingO(n/logn) processors. The algorithm hasO(n logn) as the product of the running time and the number of processors; i.e., an optimal speed-up.  相似文献

We give the first efficient parallel algorithms for solving the arrangement problem. We give a deterministic algorithm for the CREW PRAM which runs in nearly optimal bounds ofO (logn log* n) time andn 2/logn processors. We generalize this to obtain anO (logn log* n)-time algorithm usingn d /logn processors for solving the problem ind dimensions. We also give a randomized algorithm for the EREW PRAM that constructs an arrangement ofn lines on-line, in which each insertion is done in optimalO (logn) time usingn/logn processors. Our algorithms develop new parallel data structures and new methods for traversing an arrangement. This work was supported by the National Science Foundation, under Grants CCR-8657562 and CCR-8858799, NSF/DARPA under Grant CCR-8907960, and Digital Equipment Corporation. Parallel algorithms for the problems of selection and searching on sorted matrices are formulated. The selection algorithm takesO(lognlog lognlog*n) time withO(n/lognlog*n) processors on an EREW PRAM. This algorithm can be generalized to solve the selection problem on a set of sorted matrices. The searching algorithm takesO(log logn) time withO(n/log logn) processors on a Common CRCW PRAM, which is optimal. We show that no algorithm using at mostnlogcnprocessors,c≥ 1, can solve the matrix search problem in time faster than Ω(log logn) and that Ω(logn) steps are needed to solve this problem on any model that does not allow concurrent writes.  相似文献

We give an improved parallel algorithm for the problem of computing the tube minima of a totally monotonen ×n ×n matrix, an important matrix searching problem that was formalized by Aggarwal and Park and has many applications. Our algorithm runs inO(log logn) time withO(n2/log logn) processors in theCRCW-PRAM model, whereas the previous best ran inO((log logn)2) time withO(n2/(log logn)2 processors, also in theCRCW-PRAM model. Thus we improve the speed without any deterioration in thetime ×processors product. Our improved bound immediately translates into improvedCRCW-PRAM bounds for the numerous applications of this problem, including string editing, construction of Huffmann codes and other coding trees, and many other combinatorial and geometric problems. This research was supported by the Office of Naval Research under Grants N00014-84-K-0502 and N00014-86-K-0689, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under Grant AFOSR-90-0107, the National Science Foundation under Grant DCR-8451393, and the National Library of Medicine under Grant R01-LM05118. Ghosh and Bhattacharjee propose [2] (Intern. J. Computer Math., 1984, Vol. 15, pp. 255-268) an algorithm of determining breadth first spanning trees for graphs, which requires that the input graphs contain some vertices, from which every other vertex in the input graph can be reached. These vertices are called starting vertices. The complexity of the GB algorithm is O(log2 n) using O{n 3) processors. In this paper an algorithm, named BREADTH, also computing breadth first spanning trees, is proposed. The complexity is O(log2 n) using O{n 3/logn) processors. Then an efficient parallel algorithm, named- BREADTHFOREST, is proposed, which generalizes algorithm BREADTH. The output of applying BREADTHFOREST to a general graph, which may not contain any starting vertices, is a breadth first spanning forest of the input graph. The complexity of BREADTHFOREST is the same as BREADTH.  相似文献

We present a simple parallel algorithm for computing the greatest common divisor (gcd) of twon-bit integers in the Common version of the CRCW model of computation. The run-time of the algorithm in terms of bit operations isO(n/logn), usingn 1+ processors, where is any positive constant. This improves on the algorithm of Kannan, Miller, and Rudolph, the only sublinear algorithm known previously, both in run time and in number of processors; they requireO(n log logn/logn),n 2 log2 n, respectively, in the same CRCW model. We give an alternative implementation of our algorithm in the CREW model. Its run-time isO(n log logn/logn), usingn 1+ processors. Both implementations can be modified to yield the extended gcd, within the same complexity bounds.Supported in part by an IBM Graduate Fellowship and a Bantrell Postdoctoral Fellowship.Supported in part by a Weizmann Postdoctoral Fellowship.4 All logarithms are to base 2.  相似文献

By restricting weight functions to satisfy the quadrangle inequality or the inverse quadrangle inequality, significant progress has been made in developing efficient sequential algorithms for the least-weight subsequence problem [10], [9], [12], [16]. However, not much is known on the improvement of the naive parallel algorithm for the problem, which is fast but demands too many processors (i.e., it takesO(log2 n) time on a CREW PRAM with n3/logn processors). In this paper we show that if the weight function satisfies the inverse quadrangle inequality, the problem can be solved on a CREW PRAM in O(log2 n log logn) time withn/log logn processors, or in O(log2 n) time withn logn processors. Notice that the processor-time complexity of our algorithm is much closer to the almost linear-time complexity of the best-known sequential algorithm [12].  相似文献

We address the problem of approximating aminimum cycle cover in parallel. We give the first efficient parallel algorithm for finding an approximation to aminimum cycle cover. Our algorithm finds a cycle cover whose size is within a factor of 0(1 +n logn/(m + n) of the minimum-sized cover usingO(log2 n) time on (m + n)/logn processors.Research supported by ONR Grant N00014-88-K-0243 and DARPA Grant N00039-88-C0113 at Harvard University.Research supported by a graduate fellowship from GE. Given ann-vertex simple polygon we address the following problems: (i) find the shortest path between two pointss andd insideP, and (ii) compute the shortestpath tree between a single points and each vertex ofP (which implicitly represents all the shortest paths). We show how to solve the first problem inO(logn) time usingO(n) processors, and the more general second problem inO(log2 n) time usingO(n) processors, and the more general second problem inO(log2 n) time usingO(n) processors for any simple polygonP. We assume the CREW RAM shared memory model of computation in which concurrent reads are allowed, but no two processors should attempt to simultaneously write in the same memory location. The algorithms are based on the divide-and-conquer paradigm and are quite different from the known sequential algorithmsResearch supported by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (McGill University) grant 276-07  相似文献

A new scheme for the deterministic simulation of PRAMs in VLSI   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A deterministic scheme for the simulation of (n, m)-PRAM computation is devised. Each PRAM step is simulated on a bounded degree network consisting of a mesh-of-trees (MT) of siden. The memory is subdivided inn modules, each local to a PRAM processor. The roots of the MT contain these processors and the memory modules, while the otherO(n 2) nodes have the mere capabilities of packet switchers and one-bit comparators. The simulation algorithm makes a crucial use of pipelining on the MT, and attains a time complexity ofO(log2 n/log logn). The best previous time bound wasO(log2 n) on a different interconnection network withn processors. While the previous simulation schemes use an intermediate MPC model, which is in turn simulated on a bounded degree network, our method performs the simulation directly with a simple algorithm. This work has been supported in part by Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione of Italy under a research grant.  相似文献

A positive integern is a perfect power if there exist integersx andk, both at least 2, such thatn=x k . The usual algorithm to recognize perfect powers computes approximatekth roots forklog 2 n, and runs in time O(log3 n log log logn).First we improve this worst-case running time toO(log3 n) by using a modified Newton's method to compute approximatekth roots. Parallelizing this gives anNC 2 algorithm.Second, we present a sieve algorithm that avoidskth-root computations by seeing if the inputn is a perfectkth power modulo small primes. Ifn is chosen uniformly from a large enough interval, the average running time isO(log2 n).Third, we incorporate trial division to give a sieve algorithm with an average running time ofO(log2 n/log2 logn) and a median running time ofO(logn). The two sieve algorithms use a precomputed table of small primes. We give a heuristic argument and computational evidence that the largest prime needed in this table is (logn)1+O(1); assuming the Extended Riemann Hypothesis, primes up to (logn)2+O(1) suffice. The table can be computed in time roughly proportional to the largest prime it contains. We also present computational results indicating that our sieve algorithms perform extremely well in practice. This work forms part of the second author's Ph.D. thesis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1991. A stringw isprimitive if it is not a power of another string (i.e., writingw =v k impliesk = 1. Conversely,w is asquare ifw =vv, withv a primitive string. A stringx issquare-free if it has no nonempty substring of the formww. It is shown that the square-freedom of a string ofn symbols over an arbitrary alphabet can be tested by a CRCW PRAM withn processors inO(logn) time and linear auxiliary space. If the cardinality of the input alphabet is bounded by a constant independent of the input size, then the number of processors can be reduced ton/logn without affecting the time complexity of this strategy. The fastest sequential algorithms solve this problemO(n logn) orO(n) time, depending on whether the cardinality of the input alphabet is unbounded or bounded, and either performance is known to be optimal within its class. More elaborate constructions lead to a CRCW PRAM algorithm for detecting, within the samen-processors bounds, all positioned squares inx in timeO(logn) and using linear auxiliary space. The fastest sequential algorithms solve this problem inO(n logn) time, and such a performance is known to be optimal. This research was supported, through the Leonardo Fibonacci Institute, by the Istituto Trentino di Cultura, Trento, Italy. In this paper we describe a simple parallel algorithm for list ranking. The algorithm is deterministic and runs inO(logn) time on an EREW PRAM withn/logn processors. The algorithm matches the performance of the Cole-Vishkin [CV3] algorithm but is simple and has reasonable constant factors.R. J.
