An assumed strain finite element formulation with a stabilization matrix is developed for analysis of geometrically non-linear problems of isotropic and laminated composite shells. The present formulation utilizes the degenerate solid shell concept and assumes an independent strain as well as displacement. The assumed independent strain field is divided into a lower order part and a higher order part. Subsequently, the lower order part is set equal to the displacement-dependent strain evaluated at the lower order integration points and the remaining higher order part leads to a stabilization matrix. The strains and the determinant of the Jacobian matrix are assumed to vary linearly in the thickness direction. This assumption allows analytical integration through thickness, independent of the number of plies. A nine-node element with a judiciously chosen set of higher order assumed strain field is developed. Numerical tests involving isotropic and composite shells undergoing large deflections demonstrate the validity of the present formulation.  相似文献

A set of four-node shell element models based on the assumed strain formulation is considered here. The formulation allows for changes in the shell thickness. As a result, the kinematics of deformation are described by purely vectorial variables, without using rotational angles. The present study investigates the use of bubble function displacements and the assumed strain field. Careful selection of the assumed strain terms generates an element whose order of numerical integration does not increase even when the bubble function displacements are added. Results for the four-node element without any bubble function terms show sensitivity to element distortion. Use of the bubble functions with a carefully chosen assumed strain field greatly improves element performance. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Bubble function displacements are used in conjunction with the assumed strain formulation to construct efficient triangular solid shell elements tailored for shell analysis. Two versions of 36‐DOF triangular elements are presented with different bubble function displacements and the corresponding assumed strain fields. In the first version the bubble function displacement is independent of the thickness while in the second version the bubble function varies linearly in the thickness direction. The assumed strain fields are carefully selected to alleviate locking effect. The first version models curved shells with flat triangular elements. The second version is effective in alleviating the membrane locking and thus allows more accurate modelling of curved shells. Various numerical examples demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the present assumed strain formulation elements with the bubble function displacements. In this paper a new reduced integration eight‐node solid‐shell finite element is presented. The enhanced assumed strain (EAS) concept based on the Hu–Washizu variational principle requires only one EAS degree‐of‐freedom to cure volumetric and Poisson thickness locking. One key point of the derivation is the Taylor expansion of the inverse Jacobian with respect to the element center, which closely approximates the element shape and allows us to implement the assumed natural strain (ANS) concept to eliminate the curvature thickness and the transverse shear locking. The second crucial point is a combined Taylor expansion of the compatible strain with respect to the center of the element and the normal through the element center leading to an efficient and locking‐free hourglass stabilization without rank deficiency. Hence, the element requires only a single integration point in the shell plane and at least two integration points in thickness direction. The formulation fulfills both the membrane and the bending patch test exactly, which has, to the authors' knowledge, not yet been achieved for reduced integration eight‐node solid‐shell elements in the literature. Owing to the three‐dimensional modeling of the structure, fully three‐dimensional material models can be implemented without additional assumptions. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the vibration analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) and laminated composite structures, using a refined 8-node shell element that allows for the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The properties of FGM vary continuously through the thickness direction according to the volume fraction of constituents defined by sigmoid function, but in this method, their Poisson’s ratios of the FGM plates and shells are assumed to be constant. The finite element, based on a first-order shear deformation theory, is further improved by the combined use of assumed natural strains and different sets of collocation points for interpolation the different strain components. We analyze the influence of the shell element with the various location and number of enhanced membrane and shear interpolation. Using the assumed natural strain method with proper interpolation functions the present shell element generates neither membrane nor shear locking behavior even when full integration is used in the formulation. The natural frequencies of plates and shells are presented, and the forced vibration analysis of FGM and laminated composite plates and shells subjected to arbitrary loading is carried out. In order to overcome membrane and shear locking phenomena, the assumed natural strain method is used. To validate and compare the finite element numerical solutions, the reference solutions of plates based on the Navier’s method, the series solutions of sigmoid FGM (S-FGM) plates are obtained. Results of the present theory show good agreement with the reference solutions. In addition the effect of damping is investigated on the forced vibration analysis of FGM plates and shells.  相似文献

In this paper, a novel reduced integration eight‐node solid‐shell finite element formulation with hourglass stabilization is proposed. The enhanced assumed strain method is adopted to eliminate the well‐known volumetric and Poisson thickness locking phenomena with only one internal variable required. In order to alleviate the transverse shear and trapezoidal locking and correct rank deficiency simultaneously, the assumed natural strain method is implemented in conjunction with the Taylor expansion of the inverse Jacobian matrix. The projection of the hourglass strain‐displacement matrix and reconstruction of its transverse shear components are further employed to avoid excessive hourglass stiffness. The proposed solid‐shell element formulation successfully passes both the membrane and bending patch tests. Several typical examples are presented to demonstrate the excellent performance and extensive applicability of the proposed element. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new mixed shell element is developed for a seven‐parameter formulation in this paper. The mixed shell element is constructed by assuming stress field and displacement field together. Assumed stress field and assumed displacement field can be combined by stress–strain relationship with Hu‐Washizu functional. The developed mixed shell element can provide more flexible stiffness than other commercial softwares. Additionally, seven‐parameter shell formulation is used instead of Reissner/Mindlin formulation, since it can provide the thickness change. Even though some commercial engineering software are not proper for very thick shell structure, the developed mixed shell element for seven‐parameter formulation can be used without distinction of thick shell and thin shell. An example of shell models with different thickness is provided with solid model. Static and modal analyses are also performed for verification. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Conventional shell formulations, such as 3- or 5-parameter theories or even 6-parameter theories including the thickness change as extra parameter, require a condensation of the constitutive law in order to avoid a significant error due to the assumption of a linear displacement field across the thickness. This means that the normal stress in thickness direction has to either vanish or be constant. In general, these extra constraints cannot be satisfied explicitly or they Sead to elaborate strain expressions. The main objective of the present study is to introduce directly a complete 3-D constitutive law without modification. Therefore, a 7-parameter theory is utilized which includes a linear varying thickness stretch as extra variable allowing also large strain effects. In order to preserve the basic features of a displacement formulation the extra strain term is incorporated via the enhanced assumed strain concept recently proposed by Simo and Rifai to improve the performance of finite elements. Since the extra strain parameter can be eliminated on the element level after discretization, the formulation preserves the formal structure of a 6-parameter shell theory. The resulting hybrid-mixed shell formulation is applied to large deformation problems with hyperelasticity, small and large strain plasticity.  相似文献

A nine node shell element is developed by a new and more efficient mixed formulation. The new shell element formulation is based on the Hellinger–Reissner principle with independent strain and the concept of a degenerate solid shell. The new formulation is made more efficient in terms of computing time than the conventional mixed formulation by dividing the assumed strain fields into a lower order part and a higher order part. Numerical results demonstrate that the present nine node element is free of locking even for very thin plates and shells and is also kinematically stable. In fact the stiffness matrix associated with the higher order assumed strain plays the role of a stabilization matrix.  相似文献

A formulation for 36‐DOF assumed strain triangular solid shell element is developed for efficient analysis of plates and shells undergoing finite rotations. Higher order deformation modes described by the bubble function displacements are added to the assumed displacement field. The assumed strain field is carefully selected to alleviate locking effect. The resulting element shows little effect of membrane locking as well as shear locking, hence, it allows modelling of curved shell structures with curved elements. The kinematics of the present formulation is purely vectorial with only three translational degrees of freedom per node. Accordingly, the present element is free of small angle assumptions, and thus it allows large load increments in the geometrically non‐linear analysis. Various numerical examples demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the present formulation. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents an eight‐node nonlinear solid‐shell element for static problems. The main goal of this work is to develop a solid‐shell formulation with improved membrane response compared with the previous solid‐shell element (MOS2013), presented in 1 . Assumed natural strain concept is implemented to account for the transverse shear and thickness strains to circumvent the curvature thickness and transverse shear locking problems. The enhanced assumed strain approach based on the Hu–Washizu variational principle with six enhanced assumed strain degrees of freedom is applied. Five extra degrees of freedom are applied on the in‐plane strains to improve the membrane response and one on the thickness strain to alleviate the volumetric and Poisson's thickness locking problems. The ensuing element performs well in both in‐plane and out‐of‐plane responses, besides the simplicity of implementation. The element formulation yields exact solutions for both the membrane and bending patch tests. The formulation is extended to the geometrically nonlinear regime using the corotational approach, explained in 2 . Numerical results from benchmarks show the robustness of the formulation in geometrically linear and nonlinear problems. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the recent years, solid‐shell finite element models which possess no rotational degrees of freedom and applicable to thin plate/shell analyses have attracted considerable attention. Development of these elements are not straightforward. Shear, membrane, trapezoidal, thickness and dilatational lockings must been visioned. In this part of this paper, a novel eight‐node solid‐shell element is proposed. To resolve the shear and trapezoidal lockings, the assumed natural strain (ANS) method is resorted to. The hybrid‐stress formulation is employed to rectify the thickness and dilatational locking. The element is computationally more efficient than the conventional hybrid elements by adopting orthogonal‐assumed stress modes and enforcing admissible sparsity in the flexibility matrix. Popular benchmark tests are exercised to illustrate the efficacy of the elements. In Part II of the paper, the element will be generalized for smart structure modelling by including the piezoelectric effect. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Further development of three dimensional tri-linear elements based on a modified enhanced strain methodology is presented. The new formulation employs Taylor expansions of the derivatives of the isoparametric and enhanced shape functions in local coordinates. With this approach, only nine enhanced modes are needed for developing a dilatational-locking free element. Furthermore, the formulation permits a symbolic integration of the element tangent matrix, and more efficient static condensation procedure due to uncoupling of the enhanced modes. Good results in the analysis of thin shell structures, using only one 3D element in the thickness direction of the shell, are also presented.  相似文献

The authors proposed a quadrilateral shell element enriched with degrees of freedom to represent thickness-stretch. The quadrilateral shell element can be utilized to consider large deformations for nearly incompressible materials, and its performance is demonstrated in small and large deformation analyses of hyperelastic materials in this study. Formulation of the proposed shell element is based on extension of the MITC4 shell element. A displacement variation in the thickness direction is introduced to evaluate the change in thickness. In the proposed approach, the thickness direction is defined using the director vectors at each midsurface node. The thickness-stretch is approximated by the movements of additional nodes, which are placed along the thickness direction from the bottom to the top surface. The transverse normal strain is calculated using these additional nodes without assuming the plane stress condition; hence, a three-dimensional constitutive equation can be employed without any modification. In this work, the authors apply an assumed strain technique to the special shell element to alleviate volumetric locking for nearly incompressible materials. Several numerical examples are presented to examine the effectiveness of the proposed element.  相似文献

In this paper a new eight‐node (brick) solid‐shell finite element formulation based on the concept of reduced integration with hourglass stabilization is presented. The work focuses on static problems. The starting point of the derivation is the three‐field variational functional upon which meanwhile established 3D enhanced strain concepts are based. Important additional assumptions are made to transfer the approach into a powerful solid‐shell. First of all, a Taylor expansion of the first Piola–Kirchhoff stress tensor with respect to the normal through the centre of the element is carried out. In this way the stress becomes a linear function of the shell surface co‐ordinates whereas the dependence on the thickness co‐ordinate remains non‐linear. Secondly, the Jacobian matrix is replaced by its value in the centre of the element. These two assumptions lead to a computationally efficient shell element which requires only two Gauss points in the thickness direction (and one Gauss point in the plane of the shell element). Additionally three internal element degrees‐of‐freedom have to be determined to avoid thickness locking. One important advantage of the element is the fact that a fully three‐dimensional stress state can be modelled without any modification of the constitutive law. The formulation has only displacement degrees‐of‐freedom and the geometry in the thickness direction is correctly displayed. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper we address the extension of a recently proposed reduced integration eight‐node solid‐shell finite element to large deformations. The element requires only one integration point within the shell plane and at least two integration points over the thickness. The possibility to choose arbitrarily many Gauss points over the shell thickness enables a realistic and efficient modeling of the non‐linear material behavior. Only one enhanced degree‐of‐freedom is needed to avoid volumetric and Poisson thickness locking. One key point of the formulation is the Taylor expansion of the inverse Jacobian matrix with respect to the element center leading to a very accurate modeling of arbitrary element shapes. The transverse shear and curvature thickness locking are cured by means of the assumed natural strain concept. Further crucial points are the Taylor expansion of the compatible cartesian strain with respect to the center of the element as well as the Taylor expansion of the second Piola–Kirchhoff stress tensor with respect to the normal through the center of the element. A new continuum based thick shell model is presented for modeling orthotropic laminated shell structures undergoing large elastic deformations. An equivalent single-layer model involving seven nodal degrees of freedom is used. In that layered model, there are no restrictions on the number of layers, their thickness and their stacking sequence. The shell model accounts explicitly for the thickness change in the shell, as well as the normal stress and strain states through its thickness. Shear locking is avoided using an assumed natural strain formulation, while thickness locking is avoided using modified displacement interpolation functions. The performance of the layered shell element is tested using several linear and non-linear composite plate and shell problems involving anisotropic, angle and cross-ply laminates, cylindrical and spherical shells.  相似文献

A 6‐node curved triangular shell element formulation based on a co‐rotational framework is proposed to solve large‐displacement and large‐rotation problems, in which part of the rigid‐body translations and all rigid‐body rotations in the global co‐ordinate system are excluded in calculating the element strain energy. Thus, an element‐independent formulation is achieved. Besides three translational displacement variables, two components of the mid‐surface normal vector at each node are defined as vectorial rotational variables; these two additional variables render all nodal variables additive in an incremental solution procedure. To alleviate the membrane and shear locking phenomena, the membrane strains and the out‐of‐plane shear strains are replaced with assumed strains in calculating the element strain energy. The strategy used in the mixed interpolation of tensorial components approach is employed in defining the assumed strains. The internal force vector and the element tangent stiffness matrix are obtained from calculating directly the first derivative and second derivative of the element strain energy with respect to the nodal variables, respectively. Different from most other existing co‐rotational element formulations, all nodal variables in the present curved triangular shell formulation are commutative in calculating the second derivative of the strain energy; as a result, the element tangent stiffness matrix is symmetric and is updated by using the total values of the nodal variables in an incremental solution procedure. Such update procedure is advantageous in solving dynamic problems. Finally, several elastic plate and shell problems are solved to demonstrate the reliability, efficiency, and convergence of the present formulation. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A stabilized nine-node degenerated shell element, previously derived for linear analysis by the admissible matrix formulation, is extended to geometrically nonlinear analysis. The assumed stress modes pertinent to stabilization matrix are contravariant in nature and their energy products with the displacement-derived covariant strain can be programmed without resorting to numerical integration and the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. Numerical tests show that its accuracy is virtually identical to the uniformly reduced integration element.  相似文献
