The reinforcement mechanics of viscose‐fiber‐reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were studied. The effect of the coupling agent, maleated polypropylene (MAPP), was of special interest. The fibers, coupling agent, and PP were extruded and injection‐molded. The composition, mechanical properties, fracture morphology, and dispersion of the composites were examined. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the fiber content in the tensile specimens varied slightly with the sample location; however, the differences in the values were within 1.0%. Scanning electron microscopy images of the fracture surfaces of the composites showed that the surfaces of the composites without MAPP were covered with fibers pulled out from the matrix. A lack of adhesion further appeared as a cracked matrix–fiber interface. A new scanning thermal microscopy method, microthermal analysis, was used to study the dispersion of the fibers in the composites. Local thermal analyses gave further information about the location of the fibers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 2676–2684, 2004  相似文献

Kenaf (KNF)‐filled polypropylene/waste tire dust (PP/WTD) composites containing different KNF loadings (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 parts per hundred parts of resin (phr)) were prepared using a Thermo Haake Polydrive internal mixer. The influence of the KNF form (KNF short fiber (KNFs) and KNF powder (KNFp)) at different KNF loadings on properties of the composites was studied. Results showed that with increasing KNF loading, the stabilization torque, tensile modulus, water absorption, and thermal properties increased for both KNFp‐ and KNFs‐filled PP/WTD composites. However, the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased by 29.2% and 53.9%, respectively, for KNFp‐filled PP/WTD composites, whereas KNFs‐filled PP/WTD composites showed a decrement of 24.5% and 63.5%, respectively. The stabilization torque, tensile strength, and tensile modulus increased by 22.4%, 6.7%, and 2.6%, respectively, for KNFs‐filled PP/WTD composites at 20 phr KNF loading. The scanning electron microscopy morphological studies on the tensile fractured surfaces revealed poor adhesion between KNFp and PP/WTD matrices as compared to KNFs and PP/WTD matrices. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fracture behavior and deformation mechanism of polypropylene (PP) composites filled with magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] were investigated. The incorporation of Mg(OH)2 particles into the PP matrix led to an increase in Young's modulus and a significant reduction in the tensile yield strength and elongation at break. Surface modification on filler particles with stearic acid could reduce the interfacial adhesion between the filler and PP matrix and improve the stress transferability. The deformation mechanism of the Mg(OH)2/PP composites depended on the interfacial adhesion and the deformability of ligaments between microvoids caused by debonding. The deformability of the ligaments could be significantly improved by surface modification on the particle surface. The dependence of the deformation behavior of the Mg(OH)2/PP composites on the filler content was in accordance with percolation theory. The agglomeration of microvoids and fibrillation of ligaments in the PP composites with excessive filler content indicated the weak resistance of the polymer matrix to crack propagation and premature fracture in a brittle manner. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present study was carried out to determine the filler characteristics and to investigate the effects of three types of mineral fillers (CaCO3, silica, and mica) and filler loadings (10–40 wt%) on the properties of polypropylene (PP) composites. The characteristics of the particulate fillers, such as mean particle size, particle size distribution, aspect ratio, shape, and degree of crystallinity were identified. In terms of mechanical properties, for all of the filled PP composites, Young's modulus increased, whereas tensile strength and strain at break decreased as the filler loading increased. However, 10 wt% of mica in a PP composite showed a tensile strength comparable with that of unfilled PP. Greater tensile strength of mica/PP composites compared to that of the other composites was observed because of lower percentages of voids and a higher aspect ratio of the filler. Mica/PP also exhibited a lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) compared to that of the other composites. This difference was due to a lower degree of crystallinity of the filler and the CTE value of the mica filler. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the structure of fracture surfaces, and there was a gradual change in tensile fracture behavior from ductile to brittle as the filler loading increased. The nucleating ability of the fillers was studied with differential scanning calorimetry, and a drop in crystallinity of the composites was observed with the addition of mineral filler. Studies on the hybridization effect of different (silica and mica) filler ratios on the properties of PP hybrid composites showed that the addition of mica to silica‐PP composites enhanced their tensile strength and modulus. The effect of two compatibilizers, i.e. ethylene diamine dilaurate (EDD) and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) on the mechanical properties, water absorption, morphology, and thermal properties of silica‐filled polypropylene (PP/Sil) composites were studied. The results show that the tensile, impact and flexural strengths (up to 2 php), Young's modulus, and elongation at break (Eb) increased with increasing EDD content. However, increasing MAPP content increases the tensile strength, Young's modulus, impact and flexural strengths, and water absorption resistance. At a similar compatibilizer content, EDD exhibits higher Eb, impact and flexural strengths but lowers tensile strength, Young's modulus, and water absorption resistance compared with MAPP. Scanning electron microscopy study of tensile fractured surfaces exhibits the evidence of better silica‐PP adhesion with MAPP and EDD compared with the similar composites but without compatibilizer. Fourier transform infra red spectra provide an evidence of interaction between EDD or MAPP with PP/Sil composites. Termogravimetry analysis results indicate that the addition of EDD or MAPP slightly increases the thermal stability of PP/Sil composites. Differential scanning calorimetry also indicates that PP/Sil composites with EDD or MAPP have higher heat fusion (ΔHf(com)) and crystallinity (Xcom) than similar composites but without compatibilizer. The mechanical properties, morphology, and thermal properties of chitosan‐filled polypropylene (PP) composites have been studied. The effect of the chemical modification of chitosan by acrylic acid treatment was also investigated. Results showed that the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased but that the Young's modulus of the composites increased with increasing filler loading. Chemical modification of chitosan with acrylic acid improved the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composites but reduced the elongation at break. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the addition of chitosan improved the thermal stability of the PP/chitosan composites as compared to that of neat PP. Chemical modification of chitosan had a positive effect on the thermal stability of the composites. This change was attributed to improvement of the interfacial adhesion between the chitosan and PP matrix due to formation of a covalent bond between chitosan and acrylic acid. Meanwhile, differential scanning calorimetric analysis showed that the addition of filler did not significantly change the melting temperature (Tm) of the PP/chitosan composites. The degree of crystallinity of the composites decreased with the addition of chitosan. At a similar chitosan loading, the chemically treated PP/chitosan composites exhibited higher crystallinity than the untreated composites and exhibited slightly increased Tm. A scanning electron microscopy study of the tensile fracture surface of chemically treated PP/chitosan composites indicated that the presence of acrylic acid increased the interfacial interaction between chitosan and the polypropylene matrix. Chitosan was used as filler in polypropylene (PP) polymer. In order to improve compatibility between chitosan and PP, chitosan was chemically modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APE). The results show that the increasing of filler content decreased tensile strength and elongation at break, but increased Young's modulus of composites. The treated composites exhibit higher tensile strength and Young's modulus, but lower elongation at break compared untreated composites. The addition of 3-APE has improved thermal properties such as thermal stability and crystallinity of treated composites. SEM study of the tensile fracture surface of treated composites shows better interfacial interaction and adhesion between the chitosan-PP matrix.  相似文献

To improve interactions between fibrous cellulose (FC) and polypropylene (PP), oxidatively degraded polypropylene (DgPP) and maleated polypropylene (MAPP) were studied as compatibilizers. Both compatibilizers had the same mechanism, using esterification between the OH group in FC and the reactive (γ‐lactone, acid, and maleic anhydride) groups in the compatibilizers. However, the adhesion style with the ester bond was considerably different because of the arrangements of the reactive groups. DgPP had reactive groups at the polymer chain end, and the tensile behavior of the FC/PP/DgPP composite exhibited comparatively ductile behavior. However, MAPP had inner reactive groups, and the tensile behavior of the FC/PP/MAPP composite was quite brittle. Observation of these fracture surfaces suggested that the adhesion performance of the interface between FC and PP was strongly influenced by the arrangements of the reactive group. In addition, the performance was influenced by the molecular weight of DgPP and by the content of maleic anhydride groups in MAPP. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Mechanical properties of metal-polymer matrix composites were investigated experimentally. High density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) were used as the polymer matrix and Fe powder in 5, 10, and 15 vol% was used as the metal. The modulus of elasticity, yield and tensile strength, % elongation, Izod notched impact strength, Shore D hardness, and fracture surfaces of the composites were determined. It was found that vol% Fe reduced the Izod impact strength of HDPE much more than that of PP and PS, while Fe powder increased the hardness of HDPE more than that of PP and PS. Among the composites, PS-Fe composites had higher yield, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity than HDPE-Fe and PP-Fe composites. However, % elongation of PS-Fe composites was lower than that of the other composites. In addition, HDPE- and PP-based composites exhibited ductile type fracture, while PS-Fe composites exhibited brittle type fracture.  相似文献

The effects of dynamic vulcanization (DV) and dynamic vulcanization plus compatibilizer (DVC) of paper sludge (PS) filled polypropylene/ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (PP/EPDM) composites on torque development, mechanical properties, water absorption, morphology, and thermal properties were studied. Results show that DV and DVC composites exhibit higher stabilization torque than unvulcanized composites (UV). The dynamic vulcanized (DV) and dynamic vulcanized plus compatibilizer (DVC) composites exhibit higher tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus but lower water absorption than unvulcanized composites. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of tensile fracture surface of DV and DVC composites shows the improved interfacial interaction between PS and PP/EPDM matrix. The DV and DVC composites also exhibit better thermal stability and higher crystallinity than unvulcanized PP/EPDM/PS composites. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Composites containing various percentage of durian seed flour (DSF) in the polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) have been compounded using an internal mixer. The processing torque, tensile, thermal and biodegradation properties have been determined. The incorporation of DSF increases stabilization torque and had adversely affected the mechanical properties by reducing the tensile strength and elongation at break, while the elastic modulus is increased, as starch content increases. At similar filler content, DSF filled PP showed higher tensile strength and elastic modulus, while lower in elongation at break than DSF-filled HDPE. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of tensile fracture specimens revealed good adhesion and dispersion of the DSF granules in the polymer matrix. However, the SEM results showed agglomeration of the DSF at higher filler content in the polymer and hence revealed poor wetting between DSF granules and polymer. The TGA results showed that both of the composites systems with higher filler content have higher initial degradation temperatures, T0, degradation temperatures, Tdeg and total weight loss. A simple biodegradability test conducted on each composite system shows that composites are subjected to biodegradation, judging by the significant increase in carbonyl and hydroxyl index of the composites after the test.  相似文献

The morphologies of the fracture surface under impact and flexural testing of Mg(OH)2/Polypropylene (PP) composites and their modified composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Experimental results indicated that addition of functionalized polypropylene (FPP) and acrylic acid (AA) and the formation of in situ FPP changed the fracture morphologies of Mg(OH)2/PP composites. We believe that addition of these modifiers improved the interfacial interaction and enhanced the interface adhesion between the particle and the matrix in Mg(OH)2/PP composites. The degree of improvement was more significant in Mg(OH)2/PP composites modified by the formation of in situ FPP. At low Mg(OH)2 content, 2 phr AA exhibited a marked effect, but at high Mg(OH)2 content, 4 phr AA afforded good effect. Due to the improved interface adhesion by interface interactions the fracture mechanism transformed from interface debonded fracture into a matrix fracture. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

The mechanical behaviour of long discontinuous glass fibre (LGF) reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites filled with talc or calcium carbonate fillers was studied. Sample specimens were processed by injection moulding, after which tensile and impact properties were analysed. In addition, scanning electron microscopy was used to analyse the morphology of the fracture surfaces. The results showed that the use of talc as a hybrid filler in LGF reinforced PP leads to a better tensile strength and toughness than in a corresponding hybrid composite based on calcium carbonate. Furthermore, it was observed that the matrix had a dominant role at low fibre content, whereas at high fibre loading, the effect of fibres was more evident.  相似文献

Cellulose microfibers (CMFs) having surfaces modified with polydopamine (PDPA) and octadecylamine (ODA) were prepared, and their reinforcing abilities for polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The PDPA coating was made via self-polymerization of dopamine (P-CMF), and subsequent alkylation was conducted by the reaction with ODA (OP-CMF). The modified CMFs exhibited improved dispersibility in the PP matrix due to the reduced hydrophilicity. The OP-CMF/PP composite prepared by batch mixing had a higher tensile modulus compared to that for the pure PP and composites with unmodified CMFs. However, excess alkylation lowered the tensile modulus, and the presence of an optimal degree of alkylation was demonstrated. The CMF/PP-IM composites fabricated by injection molding exhibited improved tensile properties compared to those prepared by batch mixing. Both the tensile modulus and yield stress were increased by increasing the CMF content and improved by the surface modification of the CMFs.  相似文献

The effect of varied rubber tree seed shell flour (RSSF) filler loadings on processing torque, mechanical, thermal, water absorption, and morphological properties of polypropylene (PP) and high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composites has been studied. The addition of RSSF in the composites increased the stabilization torque in both PP‐ and HDPE‐based composites. Tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural strength, and impact strength show significant reduction when higher loading of RSSF was incorporated, while tensile modulus and flexural modulus were improved. The phenomenon was noted for both matrices, PP and HDPE, but HDPE‐based composites showed clear effects on the reduction of the mechanical properties compared with RSSF‐filled PP. Scanning electron microscopy of tensile fracture specimens revealed the degree of dispersion of RSSF filler in the matrices. At higher filler loadings, agglomerations and poor dispersion of RSSF particles were spotted, which induce the debonding mechanism of the system. Thermogravimetric analysis thermograms showed that both PP‐ and HDPE‐based composite systems with higher RSSF content have higher thermal stability, initial degradation temperature, degradation temperature, and total weight loss. Water absorption ability of the composites increases as the filler loading increases for both matrices. J. VINYL ADDIT. TECHNOL., 22:91–99, 2016. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to study how mineral fillers would behave in a polypropylene (PP) matrix when PP modified with maleic anhydride (MA) and/or itaconic acid (IA) was used as a coupling agent in the preparation of mineral‐filled PP composites. The composites were characterized with tensile mechanical measurements and morphological analysis. The optimum amount of the coupling agent to be used to obtain composites with improved mechanical properties was established. The results indicated that these coupling agents enhanced the tensile strength of the composites significantly, and the extent of the coupling effect depended on the nature of the interface that formed. The incorporation of coupling agents enhanced the resistance to deformation of the composite. The behavior of IA‐modified PP as a coupling agent was similar to that of a commercial MA‐modified PP for the filled PP composites. Evidence of improved interfacial bonding was revealed by scanning electron microscopy studies, which examined the surfaces of fractured tensile test specimens; their microstructures confirmed the mechanical results with respect to the observed homogeneous or optimized dispersion of the mineral‐filler phase in these composites. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The interface between the matrix and filler in polyolefin composites plays an important role in their photooxidative aging processes. An interesting phenomenon, the gradual disappearance of filler particles was observed during the early natural aging of polypropylene (PP)/CaCO3 composites. Similar phenomena were also observed in a PP/SiO2 composite and PP/poly(methyl methacrylate) blend. The morphological observation and tensile and chemical analyses indicated that the photooxidized groups of the PP chain interacted strongly with the filler particles; this increased the tensile strength during the early aging stage. The PP matrix was entangled in the filler particles. Therefore, the filler particles were embedded in the matrix, and the fracture occurred in the PP matrix instead of at the interface between them. On the basis of these results, a “disappearing” filler mechanism for the PP composites was proposed. This work provides a possible way for improving the mechanical properties of PP composites with appropriate aging. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42546.  相似文献
