The small growing business needs marketing spend as much as a big one, but can seldom afford it. You haven't got the money to throw at the marketing needs, and even if you do, you may not know exactly where to throw it without an expensive expert. Happily, you can achieve a tremendous amount at minimal cost or free. A significant proportion of a marketing budget is consumed by other people's time doing tasks you and your staff could do. Here, the author focuses on a range of ideas specific to business-to-business sales. The author starts with a general point: planning. Small businesses with a plan succeed better than those without one and waste less money. Actually writing down what you're going to do makes it work better because it forces you to clarify your thoughts, quantify your aims and expectations and put dates, costs and names against each activity. The author then discusses the use of billboards, business cards, door-to-door visiting, e-mails, press releases, database marketing and quarterly newsletters for marketing purposes  相似文献

A basic problem in buying a CAD system arises from the fact that, if you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there. The solution is to plan where you want to go, and the rest more-or-less follows. The author shows how there are several ways in which you can acquire the expertise so that you can define your destination (i.e. your total CAD requirement) and hence plan your route (the justification and selection of the system)  相似文献

The author presents an argument which states that to produce successful managers in today's society, Britain needs to broaden its education to include management training alongside training in engineering etc. In other words, if you want to be a manager in the future you need a good broad-based schooling with Arts and Sciences, with built-in economics, communication skills etc. in engineering degrees so that once you get to the job you are in a position both to interact with people, and to introduce and adapt to change via a formal management training programme  相似文献

In a competitive work environment, with no rigid, preordained career ladder to follow, careers need planning: but how? The bad news is that there is no magic formula. You can, however, make a difference by working at it. First you must know what you want, and this needs some serious and systematic self-analysis. Most often successful careers do not simply happen; they are made. Recognise this, take appropriate action and see career success as something that is down primarily to you.  相似文献

As engineers go through their lives they are increasingly called upon to act in a management role. That requires a particular skill set. Some end up as leaders which requires a different skill set. It's important to distinguish between management and leadership. A simple contrasting definition helps: 'managers do things right, leaders do the right thing'. In other words, a leader knows what's best to do, while a manager knows how best to do it. In spite of a recent survey indicating that 93 per cent of respondents believe leadership skills can be taught, I don't believe you can be trained to be a leader without some inherent ability. You are either born with the right qualities or you aren't. Truly inspirational leadership comes from within from tapping into who we really are and combining that with skills and knowledge. Those who make it to the top often have all or some of the same characteristics: they are highly motivated to succeed, have high energy levels and work out career moves in advance. They tend to be goal directed, politically active, content and confident, and capable of distinguishing the important from the unimportant. More importantly, leaders have to get their people behind them-all employees have to share the vision  相似文献

You need to communicate to co-ordinate your own work and that of others. Without explicit effort, your conversation will lack communication and so your work too will collapse through misunderstanding and error. The key is to treat a conversation as you would any other managed activity: by establishing an aim, planning what to do, and checking afterwards that you have achieved that aim. Only in this way can you work effectively with others in building through common effort  相似文献

Construction skills and training needs have changed with the introduction of new business processes, different forms of organizing production and technical innovation. In the UK, training provision has failed to adapt fully to the needs of a modernizing industry. Formal training programmes have been inappropriate in content and inadequate in quantity. Many of them are out of date. An assessment is provided of the types of skill and training required to implement innovative approaches for improving construction performance. It is based on analysis of work carried out during a major national review of construction operative and supervisory skills training in the UK undertaken for the Construction Industry Board. It seeks to provide a framework for analysing skill needs in the context of modern performance targets, together with policy recommendations for decision-makers in firms, government and training institutions. The conclusion that a new generic training programme is required is of general relevance to practitioners, trainers and researchers in the UK and in other countries.  相似文献

It is frequently remarked by senior company representatives that their company's greatest asset is its staff. How they know this is a mystery as there is no evidence of it in the company's accounts. Indeed, if there was then perhaps downsizing would not be so popular: the shareholders would object to the assets being jettisoned in that cavalier fashion. Companies do not feel that they can put a monetary value on their staff or, more precisely, on their staff skills, nor does current accounting practice appear to provide a way to put this asset into the accounts. What is proposed in this article is one method of overcoming these difficulties, to the benefit of the shareholders and the staff alike, and to provide a monetary incentive for staff training  相似文献
