The APA Council of Representatives voted in February 1993 to establish a working group to review current scientific literature and identify future research and training needs regarding the evaluation of memories of childhood abuse. In March 1993 the Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest, in consultation with the Board of Professional and Scientific Affairs, named the members of the working group. This article presents a brief history of the working group, including a timeline of the meetings held and the presentation of draft reports. The report does not offer a "solution" to the "problem" of adult memories of childhood abuse. Rather, it offers a clear and concrete delineation of the issues that must be faced, the knowledge that must be sought, and the differences that must be reconciled for the science and profession of psychology to attend responsibly to the dilemmas posed by adult memories of childhood abuse. We describe characteristics of women alcohol abusers, risk factors for alcoholism in women, barriers to treatment, and implications and strategies for physicians dealing with alcohol abuse in women patients, including risk assessments and intervention strategies. Alcohol abuse and alcoholism have a different physiologic effect on women than on men. Societal attitudes about women and alcohol and internal (self-perception) and external (environmental) factors can create barriers to the detection and treatment of female alcohol abusers. Physicians are in an excellent position to address the medical, psychologic, and social concomitants of alcoholism and alcohol abuse. The Council on Scientific Affairs recommends that physicians become more active in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of alcohol-related problems in women, including the diseases that may be associated with chronic alcohol abuse and the effect of alcohol on the developing fetus. Specific American Medical Association policy and recommendations for physician practice are included.  相似文献

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) celebrates its 150th anniversary in 1998. The American Psychological Association and the AAAS have been linked institutionally since the early part of this century, and 3 psychologists in particular have been prominent figures in the AAAS at critical times in its history. James McKeen Cattell revived the journal Science, orchestrated its link to the AAAS, and helped strengthen the AAAS's ties to its affiliated organizations; Dael Wolfle was instrumental in transforming the AAAS into a professional organization with a variety of public programs; and William Bevan helped the AAAS to weather the turbulent years of the early 1970s, stressing the importance of scientists' responsibility to society.
