The fundamental optical properties of pure nickel nanostructures are studied by far‐field extinction spectroscopy and optical near‐field microscopy, providing direct experimental evidence of the existence of particle plasmon resonances predicted by theory. Experimental and calculated near‐field maps allow for unambiguous identification of dipolar plasmon modes. By comparing calculated near‐field and far‐field spectra, dramatic shifts are found between the near‐field and far‐field plasmon resonances, which are much stronger than in gold nanoantennas. Based on a simple damped harmonic oscillator model to describe plasmonic resonances, it is possible to explain these shifts as due to plasmon damping.  相似文献

We study theoretically the light scattering from metal wires of arbitrary cross section, with emphasis on the occurrence of plasmon resonances. We make use of the rigorous formulation of the Green's theorem surface integral equations of the electromagnetic wave scattering, written for an arbitrary number of scatterers described in parametric form. We have investigated the scattering cross sections for nanowires of various shapes (circle, triangles, rectangles, and stars), either isolated or interacting. The relationship between the cross sectional shape and the spectral dependence of the plasmon resonances is studied, including the impact of nanoparticle coupling in the case of interacting scatterers. Near-field intensity maps are also shown that shed light on the plasmon resonance features and the occurrence of local field enhancements.  相似文献

We study the wavelength and polarization dependent plasmon resonances of single silver and gold nanorods, triangles, cubes, and dimers with a novel single particle spectroscopy method (RotPOL). In RotPOL, a rotating wedge-shaped polarizer encodes the full polarization information of each particle within one image. This reveals the symmetry of the particles and their plasmon modes, allows analyzing inhomogeneous samples and the monitoring of particle shape changes during growth in situ.  相似文献

A measure of the degree of polarization for the three-dimensional polarization matrix (coherence matrix) of an electromagnetic field is proposed, based on Rayleigh scattering. The degree of polarization at a point is defined as an average, over all scattering directions, of an imagined dipole scattering of the three-dimensional state of polarization. This gives a well-defined purity measure, which, unlike other proposed measures of the three-dimensional degree of polarization, is not a unitary invariant of the matrix. This is demonstrated and discussed for several examples, including a partially polarized transverse beam.  相似文献

We present an experimental analysis of the plasmonic scattering properties of gold nanoparticles controllably placed nanometers away from a gold metal film. We show that the spectral response of this system results from the interplay between the localized plasmon resonance of the nanoparticle and the surface plasmon polaritons of the gold film, as previously predicted by theoretical studies. In addition, we report that the metal film induces a polarization to the single nanoparticle light scattering, resulting in a doughnut-shaped point spread function when imaged in the far-field. Both the spectral response and the polarization effects are highly sensitive to the nanoparticle-film separation distance. Such a system shows promise in potential biometrology and diagnostic devices.  相似文献

We developed a technique for the local electrical detection of a plasmon resonance in a single metal nanoparticle. A gold nanoparticle is coupled to a GaAs photodetector placed in the particle's near field. Light scattered by the particle is coupled into the semiconductor cavity of the photodetector, providing efficient transduction. Strong multipolar resonances were recorded in the 650-920 nm wavelength range. This local detection technique allows the construction of sensitive nanoscale bioprobes and arrays thereof.  相似文献

Here we report the synthesis, structure, and optical properties of ca. 100 nm star-shaped gold nanoparticles. Single particle spectroscopy measurements revealed that these nanoparticles have multiple plasmon resonances resulting in polarization-dependent scattering with multiple spectral peaks, which correspond to the different tips on the star-shaped structure. The plasmon resonances were also found to be extremely sensitive to the local dielectric environment.  相似文献

This work deals with some aspects of the resonant scattering of electromagnetic waves by a metallic sphere covered by a dielectric layer, in the weak-absorption approximation. We carry out a geometrical optics treatment of the scattering and develop semiclassical formulas to determine the positions and widths of the system resonances. In addition, we show that the mean lifetime of broad resonances is strongly dependent on the polarization of the incident light.  相似文献

We apply colloidal lithography to construct stacked nanocrescent dimer structures with an exact vertical alignment and a separation distance of approximately 10 nm. Highly ordered, large arrays of these nanostructures are accessible using nonclose-packed colloidal monolayers as masks. Spatially separated nanocrescent dimers are obtained by application of spatially distributed colloids. The polarization dependent optical properties of the nanostructures are investigated in detail and compared to single crescents. The close proximity of the nanocrescents leads to a coupling process that gives rise to new optical resonances which can be described as linear superpositions of the individual crescents' plasmonic modes. We apply a plasmon hybridization model to explain the spectral differences of all polarization dependent resonances and use geometric arguments to explain the respective shifts of the resonances. Theoretical calculations are performed to support the hybridization model and extend it to higher order resonances not resolved experimentally.  相似文献

We study the light scattering and surface plasmon resonances of Au nanorods that are commonly used as optical nanoantennas in analogy to dipole radio antennas for chemical and biodetection field-enhanced spectroscopies and scanned-probe microscopies. With the use of the boundary element method, we calculate the nanorod near-field and far-field response to show how the nanorod shape and dimensions determine its optical response. A full mapping of the size (length and radius) dependence for Au nanorods is obtained. The dipolar plasmon resonance wavelength lambda shows a nearly linear dependence on total rod length L out to the largest lengths that we study. However, L is always substantially less than lambda/2, indicating the difference between optical nanoantennas and long-wavelength traditional lambda/2 antennas. Although it is often assumed that the plasmon wavelength scales with the nanorod aspect ratio, we find that this scaling does not apply except in the extreme limit of very small, spherical nanoparticles. The plasmon response depends critically on both the rod length and radius. Large (500 nm) differences in resonance wavelength are found for structures with different sizes but with the same aspect ratio. In addition, the plasmon resonance deduced from the near-field enhancement can be significantly red-shifted due to retardation from the resonance in far-field scattering. Large differences in near-field and far-field response, together with the breakdown of the simple scaling law must be accounted for in the choice and design of metallic lambda/2 nanoantennas. We provide a general, practical map of the resonances for use in locating the desired response for gold nanoantennas.  相似文献

While the far field properties of Fano resonances are well-known, clusters of plasmonic nanoparticles also possess Fano resonances with unique and spatially complex near field properties. Here we examine the near field properties of individual Fano resonant plasmonic clusters using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) both from molecules distributed randomly on the structure and from dielectric nanoparticles deposited at specific locations within the cluster. Cluster size, geometry, and interparticle spacing all modify the near field properties of the Fano resonance. For molecules, the spatially dependent SERS response obtained from near field calculations correlates well with the relative SERS intensities observed for individual clusters and for specific Stokes modes of a para-mercaptoaniline adsorbate. In all cases, the largest SERS enhancement is found when both the excitation and the Stokes shifted wavelengths overlap the Fano resonances. In contrast, for SERS from carbon nanoparticles we find that the dielectric screening introduced by the nanoparticle can drastically redistribute the field enhancement associated with the Fano resonance and lead to a significantly modified SERS response compared to what would be anticipated from the bare nanocluster.  相似文献

Here we demonstrate how a surface plasmon (SP) generated near field pattern in the vicinity of a nano-scale pin hole can be used to generate reversible topography changes in a photosensitive polymer film above the opening. This can be achieved by simply changing the polarization state of the plasmon generating incoming light. In the case of linear polarization, the near field intensity pattern causes the film to laterally expand/contract according to the direction of the polarization. For circular polarization, two pronounced rims corresponding to maxima in the topography are observed. In all cases, the topographical variation is in close agreement with the SP intensity distribution computed from finite difference time domain simulation. Our results demonstrate the versatility of using SP near fields to imprint a variety of structures into photosensitive polymer films using only a single metallic mask.  相似文献

It is shown that strong plasmon resonances can be excited in the totally gated two-dimensional electron gas with lateral contacts by incoming electromagnetic wave. In such a structure, the plasmon resonance linewidth shrinks down to the minimal theoretical value determined by the electron scattering in two-dimensional electron system.  相似文献

We map in real space and by purely optical means near-field optical information of localized surface plasmon polariton (LSPP) resonances excited in nanoscopic particles. We demonstrate that careful polarization control enables apertureless scanning near-field optical microscopy (aSNOM) to image dipolar and quadrupolar LSPPs of the bare sample with high fidelity in both amplitude and phase. This establishes a routine method for in situ optical microscopy of plasmonic and other resonant structures under ambient conditions.  相似文献

We study the resonant scattering of light at oblique incidence by dielectric uncoated and coated cylinders. We develop a stable algorithm that permits us to calculate the resonances of a single dielectric cylinder as the tilting angle varies. This algorithm is based on semiclassical formulas for the distance between resonances. Results show that the resonances and the resonant electromagnetic energy flux near and internal to the cylindrical surface are highly sensitive to variations in the tilting angle. In addition, the coating effects are studied for scattering of light at oblique incidence by an infinite, perfect cylindrical conductor coated by a dielectric layer. In this case the resonance calculations show a peculiar similarity between this light scattering and atomic-molecular scattering. A physical interpretation for these effects is given, based on an analogy of optics and quantum mechanics.  相似文献

Plasmonic nanowires with sub-100-nm rectangular cross sections were found to exhibit a strong transverse plasmon peak at visible wavelengths. By correlating atomic force microscopy measurements of individual nanobelts with their dark-field scattering spectra, it is seen that the transverse peak tunes with cross-sectional aspect ratio. Simulations revealed that the scattering plasmonic modes are transverse antisymmetric excitations across the nanobelt width. Unlike larger diameter silver nanowires, these nanobelts exhibit sharp, tunable plasmon resonances similar to those of nanoparticles.  相似文献

We perform spectrally resolved cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging nanoscopy using a 30 keV electron beam to identify the resonant modes of an ultrathin (20 nm), laterally tapered plasmonic Ag nanostrip antenna. We resolve with deep-subwavelength resolution four antenna resonances (resonance orders m = 2-5) that are ascribed to surface plasmon polariton standing waves that are confined on the strip. We map the local density of states on the strip surface and show that it has contributions from symmetric and antisymmetric surface plasmon polariton modes, each with a very different mode index. This work illustrates the power of CL experiments that can visualize hidden modes that for symmetry reasons have been elusive in optical light scattering experiments.  相似文献

Planar clusters of coupled plasmonic nanoparticles support nanoscale electromagnetic "hot spots" and coherent effects, such as Fano resonances, with unique near and far field signatures, currently of prime interest for sensing applications. Here we show that plasmonic cluster properties can be substantially modified by the addition of individual, discrete dielectric nanoparticles at specific locations on the cluster, introducing new plasmon modes, or transmuting existing plasmon modes to new ones, in the resulting metallodielectric nanocomplex. Depositing a single carbon nanoparticle in the junction between a pair of adjacent nanodisks induces a metal-dielectric-metal quadrupolar plasmon mode. In a ten-membered cluster, placement of several carbon nanoparticles in junctions between multiple adjacent nanoparticles introduces a collective magnetic plasmon mode into the Fano dip, giving rise to an additional subradiant mode in the metallodielectric nanocluster response. These examples illustrate that adding dielectric nanoparticles to metallic nanoclusters expands the number and types of plasmon modes supported by these new mixed-media nanoscale assemblies.  相似文献

We fabricate arrays of metallic nanoparticle dimers with nanometer separation using electron beam lithography and angle evaporation. These "nanogap" dimers are fabricated on thin silicon nitride membranes to enable high resolution transmission electron microscope imaging of the specific nanoparticle geometries. Plasmonic resonances of the pairs are characterized by dark-field scattering micro-spectroscopy, which enables the optical scattering from individual nano- structures to be measured by using a spatially-filtered light source to illuminate a small area. Scattering spectra from individual dimers are correlated with transmis- sion electron microscope images and finite-difference time-domain simulations of their electromagnetic response, with excellent agreement between simulation and experiment. We observe a strong polarization dependence with two dominant scattering peaks in spectra taken with the polarization aligned along the dimer axis. This response arises from a unique Fano interference, in which the bright hybridized modes of an asymmetric dimer are able to couple to the dark higher- order hybridized modes through substrate-mediated coupling. The presence of this interference is strongly dependent on the nanoparticle geometry that defines the plasmon energy profile but also on the intense localization of charge at the dielectric surface in the nanogap region for separations smaller than 6 nm.  相似文献

Using Green's matrix method and resonance capacity concept, surface plasmon resonances of metallic nanostrips are investigated. We first show how the resonance wavelength is determined by the geometric parameters. Then, resonances from visible to near-infrared, depending on the strip size, are obtained. For a specific nanostrip-type, a linear tunability of resonance wavelength is demonstrated from λR = 900 nm to λR = 1800 nm by merely changing the dimensions and keeping the aspect ratio fixed. It is also found that the near field is more enhanced around the thin and long nanostrip. These results can act as a guide in practical design work.  相似文献
