Industrial engineering as an academic discipline appears to have reached a crisis. While the typical industrial engineering curriculum based on the Roy report results in graduate engineers who are valued by many employers, it has proved to have some adverse implications. Industrial engineering departments have not been able to maintain cohesiveness and a common view of their discipline and the engineering content has been at too low a level to put industrial engineers at the forefront of technological development. The problems and some possible solutions are described; however, this paper is primarily intended to identify some of the key issues that need to be discussed. 相似文献

In this paper we identify the engineering schools that either graduate large classes of African Americans or that retain relatively high percentages of African American students in engineering; point out that modest improvements in student retention would significantly affect the total number of bachelors degrees earned annually by African Americans in engineering; examine the measures implemented by some schools that are particularly effective at retaining African Americans in engineering; and present our views on the future of diversity efforts in engineering. The message we wish to emphasize is that at the very least colleges and universities should endeavor to retain those under represented minority undergraduates who have decided to pursue an engineering education. 基于海洋工程中存在的设计变量为离散型和连续型的混合离散变量的情况,探讨了一种优化设计问题的方法———混合离散模拟退火法.该方法相对常规模拟退火方法有一定改进并且针对混合离散变量进行了特定处理.实际算例计算表明,该方法可用于海洋工程优化设计中,其结果不需圆整,而且其解题可靠性和效率相当高. 相似文献

This paper outlines the exploration of an analogy between the developmental stages of engineering education and the stages of moral development of an individual as synthesized by Kohlberg. This exploration is used to discuss the components of education necessary to educate the “post-conventional engineer.” The exploration is relevant to understanding the historical or evolutionary stage of engineering as a profession in order to set a framework for engineering education. This analysis raises some of the issues for incorporating decisionmaking into engineering education. The paper also proposes some simple classroom techniques that can aid in developing the dimensions of social responsibility as part of the engineering classroom and decisionmaking. 相似文献

The governance of engineering, unlike science, is rarely discussed in the academy. We analyse this issue in relation to the prevalence of the term ‘engineering policy’ in contrast to ‘science policy’ as a means of demonstrating the nature of the different treatment of these concepts inside the academy and outside. We show that ‘engineering policy’ as a term has almost no academic inquiry relative to science policy, and that even ‘engineering’ is marginalised in critical social science domains like Science and Technology Studies, as others have noted. Further, we extend this exploration with regard to the visibility of engineering policy in practice communities where it ought to be visible but isn't. Specifically, we use the UK government and governance communities as a space to show how engineering and policy for engineering remain side-lined in policy practice. Given how central engineering is to society, the obscurity of its governance mechanisms and the absence of critical scrutiny of engineering policy, we propose a research and action agenda as a means of stimulating action and coalescing a community of stakeholders to redress this situation with some urgency. 相似文献
