The principal achievements since 1980 in rotary head recording on magnetic tape are outlined. These developments are related to fundamental improvements in recording media, heads, the design of tape transports, and signal processing. A multichannel, analog data storage system is presented which utilizes a compact video cassette recorder. Typical video cassette recorders operate at 3?ips and consequently allow up to one hour of continuous recording. The rotary two-head, helical-scan system employed yields a relative head-to-tape speed of 404.3 ips and a bandwidth of 3 to 4 MHz. The analog recording system described herein consists of an encoder which multiplexes and digitizes eight analog signals, a video recorder for storage of the digital data, and a decoder which demultiplexes and recovers the analog information. One unique feature of this system is that digital words which are generated consist of the channel number as well as the analog information present on that channel at the time of sampling. All information is combined serially and recorded with each word uniquely separated by a special "sync pulse." Another system feature is the ability to individually select the data bandwidth of each analog channel from values between approximately 25 kHz to 3 Hz. Design, fabrication, and evaluation is given. Interfacing to computing systems and microprocessors is discussed. An eight channel system with eight bit data words is described yielding approximately one-half percent resolution. However, the system is readily expandable to any number of channels and up to 16 bit data words yielding more resolution or higher signal-to-noise ratio.  相似文献

Through mutual technology transfer between consumer and professional video recorders, the last 20 years has witnessed a rapid evolution from analog to digital recording. Each new digital videotape recorder (VTR) uses different channel coding. This implies that improving the recording density involves the development of new channel-coding schemes together with evolutionary magnetic tapes and heads. As a result, professional digital VTR's offer the best features for video recording. This paper reviews state-of-the-art magnetic recording devices, signal processing techniques for digital recording. It also describes the specifications for home-use digital recorders for current television systems, and discusses disk recording technology in the future  相似文献

The prospect of consumer digital versatile disk (DVD) recorders highlights the challenge of protecting copyrighted video content from piracy. We describe the copy-protection system currently under consideration for DVD. The copy-protection system broadly tries to prevent illicit copies from being made from either the analog or digital I/O channels of DVD recorders. An analog copy-protection system is utilized to protect the NTSC/PAL output channel by preventing copies to VHS. The digital transmission of content is protected by a robust encryption protocol between two communicating devices. Watermarking is used to encode copy-control information retrievable from both digital and analog signals. Hence, such embedded signals avoid the need for metadata to be carried in either the digital or analog domains. Finally, the copy-protection system provides the capability for one-generation copying. We discuss some proposed solutions and some of the implementation issues that are being addressed  相似文献

A 10-bit 20-MHz A/D converter for high-quality video systems such as high-definition television, video tape recorders for business use, and digital video cameras is described. This LSI circuit uses a standard two-step parallel architecture, includes automatic gain adjustment and digital two-bit error correction, and has a sample-and-hold circuit on the chip. It is fabricated by a 4.5-GHz fT. 3-μm-rule standard bipolar technology. Its die size is 25 mm2 , and its power consumption is 900 mW, which is about half of the lowest values reported to date. The converter can digitize video signals of up to 8.5 MHz at a conversion frequency of 20 MHz. The error in differential gain is 0.5 percent, and the error in differential phase is 0.5°  相似文献
