This study compared prepartum diets based on grass, alfalfa, or alfalfa and anionic salts to investigate their effect on Ca metabolism, acid-base status, endocrine response, disease incidence, and lactational performance of periparturient dairy cows. Forty-five nonlactating Holstein cows in their last 3 wk of gestation were fed a control diet based on grass hay with a dietary cation-anion difference [expressed as milli-equivalents of ((Na + K) - (Cl + S))/100 g of dietary dry matter] of +30 or diets based on alfalfa with a dietary cation-anion difference of either +35 or -7. Cows fed the diet with the dietary cation-anion difference of -7 had the lowest urine pH prepartum and had the highest concentrations of ionized Ca in blood and total Ca in serum at parturition. Increases in 1,25-(OH)2 vitamin D per unit decrease in total Ca in serum were greatest for cows fed the diet with a dietary cation-anion difference of -7. Also, cows fed this same diet consumed the most dry matter postpartum. Incidences of health disorders were 13% (10 of 75), 12% (9 of 75), and 5% (4 of 75) for cows fed the diets with dietary cation-anion differences of +30, +35, and -7, respectively. Results indicate that alfalfa, when supplemented with anionic salts, is a viable forage for prepartum dairy cows.  相似文献

Responses in dry matter intake (DMI) and acidbase balance to three sources of anionic salts (dietary cation-anion difference = -63 to -40 meq/kg of dry matter), an acidified fermentation by-product, MgSO4.7H2O + NH4Cl, and MgSO4.7H2O + CaCl2.2H2O + CaSO4, were evaluated relative to the responses of cows fed a control diet (dietary cationanion difference = 203 meq/kg of dry matter) that did not contain anionic salts. Diets were fed for 1-wk periods to eight nonlactating Holsteins assigned to two replicated 4 x 4 Latin squares. Daily DMI increased as time of access to the diet increased up to d 5; mean DMI over d 5 to 7 was reduced by dietary anionic salts. Diets containing anionic salts induced a mild metabolic acidosis that was completely compensated by nonrespiratory mechanisms (decreased blood bicarbonate and base excess; pCO2 and pH values were unaffected). Urinary pH values and bicarbonate excretion were reduced, and urinary NH4+ and titratable acidity excretion were increased, for cows fed diets containing anionic salts. Strong ion difference in urine was decreased by dietary anionic salts because of the relatively greater excretions of Cl- and S2- versus Na+ and K+ by cows fed these diets. Dietary anionic salts decreased mean ruminal pH by 0.12 units, possibly because of the reduced strong ion difference of ruminal fluid. Dietary anionic salts increased mean ruminal NH3 concentration by 2.2 mM, probably because of the higher nonprotein N content of these diets. The strong negative relationship (r2 = 0.95) between urinary pH and net acid excretion by cows fed the diets containing anionic salts suggested that urinary pH measurement might be a useful tool to assess the degree of metabolic acidosis that was imposed by dietary anionic salts.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the influences of Ca and P contents in an anionic diet on the mineral metabolism in plasma, urine and bone in periparturient diary cows. Fifteen multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows were divided into 3 dietary groups (5 cows/group) by dietary Ca and P contents and dietary cation-anion balance [(Na + K) - (Cl + S) mEq/kg DM]; diet 1 [low Ca (0.46%), low P (0.24%), cationic (+195.8 mEq/kg DM)]; diet 2 [low Ca (0.46%), low P (0.24%), anionic (-32.4 mEq/kg DM)]; and diet 3 [high Ca (0.93%), high P (0.60%), anionic (-41.0 mEq/kg DM)]. Cows were fed one of these 3 diets from approximately 4 weeks before the expected calving date to 5 days after calving. There was no outbreak of milk fever in any cows fed these 3 diets; however, plasma Ca levels at 1 and 2 days after calving tended to be higher in the cows fed diet 3 than those in the cows fed diets 1 or 2. Fractional urinary excretion of Ca in the cows fed diet 2 or 3 was higher than that in the cows fed diet 1. Fractional urinary excretion and plasma level of Pi were higher during the periparturient period in the cows fed diet 3 than those in the cows fed diets 1 or 2. There were no significant differences in plasma parathyroid hormone levels among the 3 groups. In the spongy substance of ilium at 5 days after calving, the Ca and Mg contents bone volume and trabecular thickness were the lowest, but not significant, in the cows fed diet 2. These data suggest that sufficient Ca and P contents in an anionic diet may be effective in maintaining plasma Ca and Pi levels of periparturient cows and further in preventing of potential bone damage brought about by increased urinary mineral excretion following the feeding of an anionic diet.  相似文献

Holstein cows (n = 24) averaging 42 d in milk were used in a randomized complete block design during a 4-wk trial. A control total mixed ration (TMR) was compared with TMR supplemented with Ca salts of fatty acids from canola oil, soybean oil, or linseed oil. The three vegetable oils were progressively more unsaturated; the dominant fatty acids were, respectively, cis-delta-9-C18:1, C18:2, and C18:3. Apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, and neutral detergent fiber was higher for rations containing Ca salts than for the control ration. Milk yield increased linearly as the unsaturation of the dominant fatty acid in the Ca salts increased. Milk fat percentage was reduced when Ca salts were added to the rations. The addition of Ca salts to the ration decreased the proportions of saturated fatty acids that contained C6 to C16 and increased the proportions of C18:0, cis-delta-C18:1, and trans-delta-11-C18:1 in milk fat. Proportions of C18:2 and C18:3 increased linearly, and cis-delta-9-C18:1 decreased linearly, as the unsaturation of the dominant fatty acid in the Ca salts increased. The proportion of fat that was liquid at 5 degrees C was higher for butter from cows fed diets containing Ca salts, but the proportion of liquid fat at 20 degrees C was not affected. Calcium salts of unsaturated fatty acids added to the diets of dairy cows improved the thermal properties of milk fat.  相似文献

Sixty-seven Holstein replacement heifers (19 mo) were fed a standard (59.7% TDN) or a high energy (69.3% TDN) diet until parturition. After parturition, primiparous cows were fed either 0 or 2.8% supplemental tallow for 150 d in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with prepartum treatments. High energy prepartum increased BW (693.5 vs. 663.7 kg) and body condition scores (3.72 vs. 3.55) at calving. Increased energy density of the diet prepartum did not affect milk yield or composition. Supplemental dietary fat postpartum increased milk yield approximately 1.5 kg/d, but the response was not observed until 7 wk postpartum. Heifers fed the standard diet prepartum and no supplemental fat postpartum had higher DMI than other treatments. Heifers fed high energy prepartum and supplemental fat postpartum lost the greatest BW and body condition from 1 to 5 wk postpartum. Heifers fed high energy diets prepartum had higher concentrations of blood NEFA, BHBA, and liver triglycerides. Increases in BW and body condition scores at calving above approximately 660 kg and 3.5, respectively, do not enhance lactation performance. When 2.8% supplemental fat was fed to primiparous cows, milk yield improved approximately 1.5 kg/d after wk 7 of lactation.  相似文献

Primiparous (n = 22) and multiparous (n = 41) cows were randomly assigned by calving date and parity to one of four dietary sequences of supplemental fat from 14 d prepartum to 151 d postpartum. Partially hydrogenated tallow was added to diets at 0% prepartum and postpartum (control); 1% prepartum and 2% postpartum; 0% prepartum and 2% postpartum; and 0% prepartum, 0% from 1 to 34 d postpartum, and 2% from 35 to 151 d postpartum. Inclusion of partially hydrogenated tallow did not influence yields of milk or 3.5% FCM, milk composition, or DMI during the first 151 d postpartum. During the first 35 d postpartum, cows receiving partially hydrogenated tallow starting at parturition yielded milk with a higher fat content than those receiving fat prepartum and postpartum. Addition of partially hydrogenated tallow to diets starting 35 d postpartum resulted in cows being more persistent in yields of milk and 3.5% FCM from 60 to 151 d postpartum. Reproduction parameters measured were unaffected by time of fat addition to diets. Our data suggest that delaying the addition of partially hydrogenated tallow to diets until 35 d postpartum may improve the persistency of lactation.  相似文献

Three Na compounds were tested to determine which was best able to treat metabolic acidosis in dairy cows. Metabolic acidosis was induced in test cows by feeding a diet that was high in anions for 7 d before the administration of treatment on d 8. The orally administered treatments were equivalent amounts of Na in the form of NaCl (208.6 g), NaHCO3 (300 g), or Na propionate (343 g). The initiation of oral treatment was designated as time 0, and blood samples were taken 15 min before treatment, immediately before treatment, and 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 360 min after treatment. Before treatment, all cows were in a state of metabolic acidosis as was evidenced by low blood pH, low HCO3 concentrations, and high plasma Cl concentrations. After treatment, blood pH and HCO3 were markedly higher for cows receiving NaHCO3 and Na propionate but not for cows receiving NaCl. We concluded that orally administered NaHCO3 and Na propionate were equally effective in correcting the acid-base balance of blood, as was predicted by the strong ion difference theory of acid-base physiology. Sodium propionate may be considered a more effective treatment of metabolic acidosis in diseases such as ketosis because the added propionate can serve as a source of glucose for the cow.  相似文献

Multiparous Holstein cows in late gestation were used in a completely randomized design to test the effects of prepartum protein supply on prepartum N balance, blood metabolite and hormone concentrations, and postpartum intake and milk production. Cows were assigned to one of three isocaloric diets that differed in amount of total dietary crude protein (CP) (10.6, 12.7, or 14.5% of dry matter) but not in CP degradability or solubility. All diets contained the following ingredients: corn silage, chopped grass hay, ground corn, soybean meal, expeller soybean meal, minerals, and vitamins. Following parturition, all cows were offered a similar diet. Nitrogen balance was measured on d 12 to 7 prior to the expected calving date. Cows were bled on d 5 prior to the expected calving date from just prior to feeding to 8 h postfeeding. As dietary CP increased, plasma glucose concentrations increased linearly, but no change was detected in plasma nonesterified fatty acids or serum insulin concentrations. Nitrogen intake, apparent and true digestibilities, fecal and urinary concentration of and N balance increased as the concentration of dietary protein increased. The efficiency of absorbed protein utilization decreased as protein intake increased. No change in postpartum intake or milk production was observed. An increase in N retention in late gestation cows that were in positive N balance did not increase postpartum milk production.  相似文献

Twelve Holstein cows in early to midlactation (8 fitted with ruminal cannulas) were used to test the hypothesis that the synchronization of the rate of ruminal degradation of supplemental carbohydrate and N from fresh pasture would increase the amount of N retained for growth and milk production. A concentrate based on ground shelled corn was fed either at the time that pasture was fed at 0900 and 1700 h (synchronous) or 4 h after pasture was fed at 1300 and 2100 h (asynchronous). The crossover design included a 6-d adjustment period and a 10-d milk sampling period. Nitrogen balance was determined during the last 5 d of each period. Cows fed the synchronous diet had a lower mean ruminal pH. Peak ammonia concentration at 3 and 5 h after pasture feeding in the morning was reduced by approximately 33% of values obtained from cows fed the asynchronous diet. The diurnal pattern of blood urea N concentration was similar to that of ruminal ammonia, but mean daily concentrations of blood urea N did not differ between diets. Nitrogen retained for milk production and growth was not influenced by diet, and no differences in milk production, composition, or efficiency were observed. Based on changes in ruminal concentrations of ammonia, synchronous ruminal release of supplemental carbohydrate with pasture N appeared to improve the capture of ruminal N; however, these changes were transient and did not change the N status or performance of dairy cows.  相似文献

Based on previous in vitro results that showed reduced biohydrogenation of oleamide by ruminal microbes, this study was conducted to determine whether the addition of oleamide to the diets of dairy cows would enhance the C18:1 concentration in milk. Nine first lactation Holstein cows were fed three diets in a 3 x 3 Latin square replicated three times. Each period lasted 3 wk. The total mixed diets consisted of 42% corn silage and 58% concentrate (dry matter basis) with either no added fat (control), 3.5% high oleic canola oil, or 3.5% oleamide. Dry matter intake was reduced when oleamide was added to the diet but not when canola oil was added. Milk yields were the same for cows fed all three diets. Canola oil reduced fat-corrected milk yield and milk fat concentration, but these were not affected by oleamide. Milk protein concentration was lower for cows fed oleamide than for cows fed canola oil. Milk C18:1 averaged 23.16% of total fatty acids for cows fed the control diet and increased to 35.13% when canola oil was fed. Oleamide further increased C18:1 to 48.16% of total fatty acids in milk. All fatty acids with > or = 16 carbon chain length were reduced by oleamide. Oleamide was more effective than was canola oil in this study at increasing the oleic acid content of bovine milk. Oleamide reduced dietary intake when added at 3.5% of the dietary dry matter but still had no effect on milk yield or milk composition.  相似文献

Twelve Holstein cows and 12 Jersey cows were used in six 4 x 4 Latin squares to investigate the effects of the degradability of dietary protein and supplemental dietary fat on milk components. Dietary dry matter contained 16% crude protein with two concentrations of ruminally undegradable protein (RUP) obtained by substituting blood meal for a portion of the soybean meal. Treatments were 1) 29% RUP, 0% added fat; 2) 29% RUP, 2.7% added fat (Ca soaps of fatty acids); 3) 41% RUP, 0% added fat; and 4) 41% RUP, 2.7% added fat. The dry matter of the total mixed ration fed at 1000 and 1400 h consisted of 30% corn silage, 29% alfalfa haylage, and 41% concentrate. Supplemental dietary fat depressed dry matter intake by 6.2%. Plasma urea N was greater at 0700 and 1600 h for Jerseys fed diets containing added fat and greater at 0700 h for Holsteins fed diets containing 41% RUP than for Holsteins fed 0% added fat and 29% RUP. When averaged across both breeds, milk production increased 7.1%, and production of 4% fat-corrected milk by Jerseys increased 8.4%, in response to added dietary fat. Milk protein was reduced when Holstein diets contained 41% RUP. Milk protein content was reduced 7.1 and 3.9%, and milk urea N was increased 4.9 and 8.5%, by added fat and 41% RUP in both breeds, respectively. Added fat reduced the concentration, but not the yield, of milk components. Substitution of blood meal decreased the concentration and yield of milk protein and casein N.  相似文献

This experiment examined the effect of complete diets composed of 60% grass silage and 40% concentrate based mainly on beet pulp, ground wheat, wheat treated with NaOH, or ground corn on milk production and ruminal fermentation of dairy cows. Milk production and fat yield were 19.8, 20.7, 20.1, and 21.2 kg/d and 0.71, 0.76, 0.72, and 0.78 kg/d, respectively (18 cows per treatment). Cows fed the diet based on ground corn had higher milk production and fat yield, but lower milk protein concentration, than did cows fed the diet based on beet pulp. Cows fed the diet based on ground corn also had higher fat yields than did cows fed the diet based on wheat treated with NaOH. Cows fed the diet based on ground wheat had lower ruminal pH than did cows fed the diet based on beet pulp (6.34 vs. 6.59) and higher ruminal NH3 concentrations (6.2 vs. 5.2 mmol/L) than did cows fed the diet based on ground corn. These results showed little difference in milk production based on wheat processing method and little advantage to replacing beet pulp with either wheat type in a high forage diet. However, milk production and fat yield were increased by replacing beet pulp with ground corn.  相似文献

Twenty Holstein cows were fed diets that were formulated with 16 or 19% crude protein (CP) that contained, respectively, 6 and 9% ruminally undegradable protein (RUP) (dry matter basis) to study the effect of increased RUP on tissue mobilization and production parameters. Cows were enrolled in the study from -14 to 114 d postpartum. Body composition measurements using the D2O dilution technique were made at -2, 5, and 12 wk postpartum. Maximum loss of body tissue occurred between wk 2 prepartum and wk 5 postpartum during which time cows fed both treatments mobilized a mean of 54 kg of body fat and 21 kg of body protein. Cows continued to mobilize 18 kg of body fat through wk 12 postpartum, but the amount of body protein was unchanged. One unit of change in body condition score corresponded to about 40 kg of empty body fat. Partitioning of empty body energy between empty body fat and protein indicated that, for each unit of change in body energy, 93% was lost or gained as body fat, and body protein accounted for only 7%. Increasing RUP in the diet had no effect on the postpartum amounts of empty body protein, empty body fat, or empty body energy. Milk production was 39.8 kg for cows fed the 16% CP diet and 42.4 kg for cows fed the 19% CP diet. There was an interaction of treatment by week postpartum. Both dry matter intake and milk production were lower during the first 6 wk postpartum but were greater thereafter for cows fed the 19% CP diet than for cows fed the 16% CP diet. Milk CP percentage was higher (3.08% vs. 2.89%), and milk CP yield tended to be greater (1.29 vs. 1.15 kg/d), for cows fed the 19% CP diet.  相似文献

Four lactating dairy cows that were ruminally and duodenally cannulated were used in an experiment with a 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine the effects of the substitution of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from forage with NDF from wheat middlings, corn gluten feed, or a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy. Dietary crude protein and NDF averaged 18 and 31%, respectively, for the diet with 71.2% of the NDF from forage (control diet) and for diets with 55% of the NDF from forage (by-product diets). The substitution of NDF from these by-products for forage NDF did not affect dry matter intake (20.1 kg/d) or digestibility of organic matter. Total tract digestibility of acid detergent fiber was lower for cows fed the diet containing a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy than for cows fed the diet containing corn gluten feed. Microbial crude protein synthesis, milk production (23.9 kg/d), and milk fat percentage were similar for all cows, regardless of diet. Cows fed the diets containing wheat middlings or a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy had reduced ruminal pH compared with that of cows fed the diet containing corn gluten feed or the control diet. Diets containing 55% of total NDF from forage with 31% of total NDF from corn gluten feed, wheat middlings, or a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy can supply sufficient effective fiber to maintain normal ruminal function.  相似文献

Feeding a high-carbohydrate (CHO) diet and administration of alkalinizing agents have both been shown to improve performance in high-intensity exercise. The effect of these treatments in combination was investigated in the present study. Six healthy male subjects exercised to exhaustion on an electrically braked cycle ergometer at a power output equivalent to 100% of their maximum oxygen uptake (VO2,max) on four separate occasions. Each subject consumed either a diet with the same composition as his normal diet (termed the experimental normal (N) diet; 54 +/- 7% CHO, 13 +/- 2% protein, 33 +/- 7% fat) or a high-CHO diet (81 +/- 2% CHO, 13 +/- 2% protein, 6 +/- 1% fat) that had the same energy and protein content for the 3 days prior to the exercise tests. Subjects then ingested either a placebo (CaCO3) or trisodium citrate (0.3 g (kg body mass)-1) 3 h before exercise. Time to fatigue was not different between experimental conditions. Consumption of the high-CHO diet had no effect on blood acid-base status, but the ingestion of sodium citrate induced a mild metabolic alkalosis after both the N diet and the high-CHO diet. This alkalinizing effect was also evident after exercise, since blood pH, plasma bicarbonate and blood base excess were higher (P < 0.05) after the ingestion of sodium citrate than under the placebo conditions. The changes in blood lactate, pyruvate and glucose and plasma glycerol after exercise were similar for all experimental conditions. Blood lactate, glucose and pyruvate and plasma glycerol concentrations increased from resting values (P < 0.01) following exercise but this increase was similar under all experimental conditions. These data demonstrate that when the energy and protein content of the diets is the same, exercise capacity and the metabolic response to intense exercise are similar following consumption either of a high-CHO diet or a more normal diet. Acute ingestion of sodium citrate prior to exercise resulted in a reduction in post-exercise acidosis despite a blood lactate concentration that was similar to that observed after the ingestion of a placebo, but did not affect exercise performance under the conditions of this study.  相似文献

An 18-wk lactation study was conducted to determine whether the effects of tallow on the lactation performance of dairy cows were influenced by particle size of hay in the ration. A total mixed ration containing 50% concentrate, 25% corn silage, and 25% alfalfa hay (dry matter basis) was fed to Holstein cows. Four total mixed rations were developed based on differences in the percentage of tallow in the concentrate and particle size of alfalfa hay: 1) 0% tallow, long-cut hay; 2) 0% tallow, short-cut hay; 3) 5% tallow, long-cut hay; and 4) 5% tallow, short-cut hay. Ration had no effect on dry matter intake, body weight gain or change in body condition score. Tallow increased milk and milk protein yields but reduced milk protein concentration. However, the effects of tallow on milk and milk protein yields were the same, regardless of hay length in the ration. A tendency for an interaction of tallow and hay particle size was detected for fat-corrected milk (FCM) because tallow increased FCM more when hay was short. Ration had no effect on volatile fatty acids in ruminal samples collected via a stomach tube. In this study, the effects of tallow on milk yield and composition from Holstein cows were the same, regardless of hay particle size in the ration. The tendency for tallow to increase FCM more when hay was short suggests at least a limited role of forage particle size in the determination of how fat supplements in dairy rations affect lactation performance.  相似文献

Our objective was to determine the effect of level and chemical form of dietary selenium on productivity of beef cows, concentrations of triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4) in plasma, and immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM) in plasma and colostrum of cows. Pregnant cows (n = 60) were randomly allocated among four dietary treatments of 20, 60, or 120 ppm Se as selenite and 60 ppm as selenomethionine from selenized yeast (SeY) in salts offered free-choice. Treatments began 90 d prepartum and continued through the second parturition. Treatments did not affect the final body weights of cows or birth weights or weaning weights of calves. At parturition, cows given salt with 20 ppm Se as selenite had lower (P < . 05) concentrations of Se in blood than cows with access to higher-Se salts. Treatments affected (P < .01) the concentration of T3 and the ratio of T3:T4 in plasma of cows. The concentration of T3 in plasma of cows with access to salt with 20 ppm Se was 14% lower than that in cows supplemented with 60 ppm Se as selenite or SeY. Plasma IgG in cows and calves, colostrum, and Se concentrations in colostrum, casein, and whey were lowest (P < .01) for cows given salt with only 20 ppm Se. Thus, salts with concentrations of 60 and 120 ppm Se improved measures of Se status in cows and calves. Consideration should be given to the concentrations of T3 and IgG when determining the nutritional requirements for Se in cattle.  相似文献

Effects of supplemental Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diets of dairy cows on milk yield and composition and blood metabolite concentrations were investigated. Twenty multiparous and 5 primiparous midlactation Holstein cows were assigned to treatments following a 3-wk covariate period; cows were then on the treatments for 70 d. Ten of the cows had previously been fitted with rumen cannulas. Five concentrate mixtures containing 0, 7.5, 15, 22, or 29% Jet-Sploded canola seed (Simons Feed Co., Quimby, IA) (equivalent to 0, 2.66, 5.33, 7.81, and 10.30% added fat, respectively) were formulated by substituting Jet-Sploded canola seed for barley and canola meal. Diets consisted of 25% alfalfa silage, 25% whole-crop oat silage, and 50% of one of the concentrate mixtures (dry matter basis). An increase in the amount of dietary fat from Jet-Sploded canola seed did not influence feed intake, milk yield or composition, or milk component yields. The inclusion of Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diet increased long-chain fatty acids and inhibited de novo synthesis of medium-chain fatty acids in milk. Mean total volatile fatty acids in the rumen and propionate concentration were reduced in a linear fashion by treatment. The inclusion of Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diets of mid-lactation cows altered rumen and blood metabolite concentrations; however, these changes had minimal effects on yield responses with the exception of milk fatty acid composition and milk protein content.  相似文献

The objectives of this experiment were to determine whether ruminally protected amino acids (AA) increased milk protein when this content was depressed by the addition of whole cottonseeds in the diets of early lactation Jersey cows. Treatments were 1) a control diet, 2) a diet containing whole cottonseed, and 3) a diet containing whole cottonseed and ruminally protected lysine and methionine. Cows were assigned to treatments at a mean of 7 d postpartum and remained on the experiment for 18 wk. Dry matter intake and yields of milk, milk fat, fat-corrected milk, and energy-corrected milk were not affected by treatment. Milk fat content tended to decrease for cows fed diets containing whole cottonseed. However, the percentages of milk protein, total N, and casein N were depressed by the addition of whole cottonseed and were increased by the addition of ruminally protected AA. The effect of the proportion of clover in the diet (200, 500 or 800 g/kg total dry matter (DM) on milk production of cows housed indoors and fed on a mixture of perennial rye-grass and white clover was measured in mid (Expt I) and late (Expt II) lactation. Higher clover contents increased the nutritive value of the diets, resulting in increased energy and protein intakes. DM intakes of cows offered 500 or 800 g clover/kg DM diets ad lib. (Expt I and Expt II, Period 1) were not significantly different but were 11-17% greater (P < 0.05) than intakes of cows fed on 200 g clover/kg total DM diets. Cows offered restricted allowances (Expt II, Period 2) had similar intakes irrespective of diet. In Expt I cows fed on 500 or 800 g clover/kg DM diets ad lib. produced 30 or 33% respectively more milk (P < 0.05) than cows fed on 200 g clover/kg total DM diets. During Expt II, Period 1, cows fed on 500 or 800 g clover/kg DM diets ad lib. produced 18 or 16% more milk (P < 0.05) respectively than cows given 200 g clover/kg total DM diets. In both these experiments the increased milk yields were due to increased intake and the higher nutritive value of the high clover diets. There was no difference in the feed conversion efficiencies of cows if maintenance energy requirements were taken into account. However, cows on restricted allowances (Expt II, Period 2) showed no significant difference in milk yield, indicating that the effect of increased nutritive value was very slight. There were no consistent effects on milk fat, protein or lactose concentrations. Concentrations of blood and milk urea increased as the clover content of the diet increased (Expt 1 only), and this was associated with increased milk non-protein N and a decreased ratio of casein N: total N. Both trials indicated an optimum clover content in the diet for milk production of 600-700 g/kg total DM.  相似文献
