In this study, we fabricated a dual‐layer PES–poly(ether‐block‐amide) (PEBA) composite membrane that included zeolitic–midazolate framework 8 (ZIF‐8) particles and evaluated it for propylene and propane separation under pure and mixed feed conditions. To improve the performance, compatibility, and distribution of particles in the polymer matrix, the ZIF‐8 particles were modified by 3‐(triethoxysilyl) propyl amine (APTES) and 3‐(trimethoxysilyl) propyl amine (APTMS) amino silane coupling agents. Particle modification did not have much effect on the structure and particle size and slightly reduced the membrane specific surface area. The modified particles tended to be in the soft section. At the high loading rate of modified particles, their appropriate compatibility increased the membrane gas permeability () and selectivity. APTES with the proper chain length compared with APTMS had a higher and the same selectivity. The best performance (by 32.1 gpu) was found in PES–PEBA–ZIF‐8–APTES 20%. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The pervaporation performance of cellulose acetate (CA) membranes prepared from acetone (AC), acetone/tetrahydrofuran (AC/THF), acetone/chloroform (AC/CF), and acetone/cyclohexane (AC/CYH) was studied for separating MeOH/MTBE (methyl tert‐butyl ether) mixture with 5 (wt) % MeOH. The dilute‐solution properties and Huggins constant (KH) of CA dissolved in AC and AC/solvent mixtures with 15 vol % of the second solvent (tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, or cyclohexane) were examined. J and α of the CA membranes were affected by the types of solvent mixtures used to prepare the casting solutions. Under the same conditions, the membrane with AC/CYH had the highest J value and the lowest α value, and it was followed by the membranes with AC/CF, AC/THF, and AC. The increasing value of J and decreasing value of α for the CA membranes from different solvent mixtures were in good agreement with the increasing value of KH of CA in corresponding solvent mixtures. Furthermore, differences in the morphology from scanning electron microscopy images of the cross sections or from atomic force microscopy photographs of the surfaces of the membranes existed, and they provided proof of the different pervaporation performances of the CA membranes prepared from AC and AC/solvent mixtures. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ZSM‐5 zeolite‐incorporated poly(dimethyl siloxane) membranes were prepared, and the molecular dispersion of the zeolite in the membrane matrix was confirmed with scanning electron microscopy. After the swelling of the membranes was studied at 30°C, the membranes were subjected to the pervaporation separation of isopropyl alcohol/water mixtures at 30, 40, and 50°C. The effects of the zeolite loading and feed composition on the pervaporation performances of the membranes were analyzed. Both the permeation flux and selectivity increased simultaneously with increasing zeolite content in the membrane matrix. This was examined on the basis of the enhancement of hydrophobicity, selective adsorption, and the establishment of molecular sieving action. The membrane containing the highest zeolite loading (30 mass %) had the highest separation selectivity (80.84) and flux (6.78 × 10?2 kg m?2 h?1) at 30°C with 5 mass % isopropyl alcohol in the feed. From the temperature dependence of the diffusion and permeation values, the Arrhenius activation parameters were estimated. A pure membrane exhibited higher activation energy values for permeability (Ep) and diffusivity (ED) than zeolite‐incorporated membranes, and signified that permeation and diffusion required more energy for transport through the pure membrane because of its dense nature. Obviously, the zeolite‐incorporated membranes required less energy because of their molecular sieving action, which was attributed to the presence of straight and sinusoidal channels in the framework of the zeolite. For the zeolite‐incorporated membranes, the activation energy values obtained for isopropyl alcohol permeation were significantly lower than the water permeation values, and this suggested that the zeolite‐incorporated membranes had higher selectivity toward isopropyl alcohol. The Ep and ED values ranged between 21.81 and 31.12 kJ/mol and between 15.27 and 41.49 kJ/mol, respectively. All the zeolite‐incorporated membranes exhibited positive values of the heat of sorption, and this suggested that the heat of sorption was dominated by Henry's mode of sorption. sorption. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The quiescent and flow‐induced crystallization of a poly(ether‐block‐amide) is studied by means of rheo‐optical methods. Both optical microscopy and small angle light scattering have been used. The multiblock copolymer has a microphase‐separated structure with an order–disorder transition at 180–185°C, as measured with rheometry and SAXS. The number of nuclei, spherulitic growth rates, and the characteristic time scale for crystallization are compared with that of a polyamide of similar molar mass. For the poly(ether‐block‐amide)—containing a majority of amide segments—the growth rates of the spherulites during quiescent crystallization are similar for the block copolymer and the homopolymer, even if the spherulitic structures are not the same. When flow is applied, the two materials behave differently. The flow increased the nucleation density in the homopolymer but not in the block copolymer. POLYM. ENG. Binary and ternary composites of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(ether‐block‐amide) (PEBAX) and copper nanoparticles were prepared by melt blending in an internal mixer. Compatibility and molecular interactions between the three components of the nanocomposites were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was found that the carbonyl groups of the PLA and copper nanoparticles interact. Also, PLA and PEBAX are compatible and develop molecular interactions between the C=O of PLA and the C=O and NH of PEBAX, forming dipole–dipole bonds and hydrogen bonds. The compatibility and molecular interaction between PLA and PEBAX are reduced by copper nanoparticles. The reduction of compatibility between PLA and PEBAX produced a lower storage modulus and lower strain at break in the ternary systems than in the blend PLA‐PEBAX. Copper nanoparticles enhanced the crystallinity of PLA. PLA responded more strongly to the nucleating effect of copper when PEBAX was added indicating a synergistic effect. The strain at break of PLA was enhanced by the addition of PEBAX but was severely reduced by the presence of nanoparticles. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) as well as its grafted copolymer membranes with polyacrylonitrile (PAN‐g‐PVA) were prepared and used to separate water and dimethyl formamide mixtures by the pervaporation technique. The three following membranes were prepared: (1) pure PVA; (2) 46% grafted PAN‐g‐PVA; and (3) 93% grafted PAN‐g‐PVA. Pervaporation separation experiments were carried out at 25°C for the feed mixture containing 10 to 90% water. By use of the transport data, permeation flux, separation selectivity, swelling index, and diffusion coefficients have been calculated. By increasing the grafting of the membrane, flux decreased, whereas separation selectivity increased slightly over that of pure PVA membrane. Arrhenius activation parameters for transport processes were calculated for 10 mass % water containing feed mixture by using flux and diffusion data obtained at 25, 35, and 45°C. Transport parameters were discussed in terms of sorption‐diffusion principles. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 4091–4097, 2004  相似文献

Hybrid membranes were prepared using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) via hydrolysis and cocondensation reaction for the pervaporation separation of water‐isopropanol mixtures. The resulting membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. The glass transition temperature of these membranes varied from 100 to 120°C with increasing TEOS content. Effects of crosslinking density and feed compositions on the pervaporation performances of the membranes were studied. The membrane containing 1.5:1 mass ratio of TEOS to PVA gave the highest separation selectivity of 900 at 30°C for 10 mass % of water in the feed mixture. It was found that the separation selectivity and permeation flux data are strongly dependent on the water composition of the feed and operating temperature. However, the membrane with the highest crosslinking density showed unusual pervaporation properties. The overall activation energy values were calculated using the Arrhenius‐type equation. The activation energy values for the permeation and diffusion varied from 49.18 to 64.96 and 55.13 to 67.31 kJ/mol, respectively. Pervaporation data have also been explained on the basis of thermodynamic quantities. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94: 1304–1315, 2004  相似文献

Dendritic poly(ester‐amine) with a peripheral hydroxyl [PEA(OH)] was synthesized from dendritic PEA terminated with acrylic double bonds [PEA(?)] and diethanolamine (DEA) by a Michael addition reaction. The effects of the reaction temperature, time, and solvent on the purities of PEA(OH) were studied. It was found that when the mole ratio of PEA(?) to DEA was 1:8 and the reaction was carried out in methanol at 25°C for 22 h, the purity of PEA(OH) was 94.6%. The structure of PEA(OH) was identified by IR, 1H‐NMR, and elemental analysis. PEA(OH) is a surfactant and its aqueous form exhibits cloud points between the mass concentrations of 0.1 and 50 mass %. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 97: 60–64, 2005  相似文献

A series of poly(amide‐co‐poly(propylene glycol)) (PA‐PPG) random copolymers with different content of PPG were designed by polycondensation reaction. These random copolymers were blended up to 60% with commercially available Pebax 2533. The blend membranes were characterized by Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM). Gas permeation properties of these blend membranes were investigated using five single‐gases (CO2, H2, O2, CH4, and N2) at different temperature of 25–55°C and 1.0 atm. The impacts of content of PA‐PPG with different PPG content and operating temperature on CO2 separation properties of Pebax/PA‐PPG blend membranes were studied. The results showed that CO2 permeability gradually increased with the increasing operating temperature, whereas CO2 permeability gradually decreased with the increase in content of PA‐PPG. CO2/N2 selectivity gradually increased with the increase in content of PA‐PPG. In particular, Pebax/PA‐PPG (50)–60% displayed excellent CO2 and O2 separation properties (PCO2 = 79.7 Barrer and PO2 = 13.6 Barrer, CO2/N= 34.7 and O2/N= 5.9) at 25°C and 1.0 atm. POLYM. ENG. Graft copolymers of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with polyacrylamide were prepared and membranes were fabricated at 48 and 93% grafting of acrylamide onto PVA. These membranes were used in the pervaporation separation of water/acetic acid mixtures at 25, 35, and 45°C. The permeation flux, separation selectivity, diffusion coefficient, and permeate concentration were determined. The highest separation selectivity of 23 for neat PVA at 25°C and the lowest value of 2.2 for 93% acrylamide‐grafted PVA membranes were observed. A permeation flux of 1.94 kg m?2 h?1 was found for the 93% grafted membrane at 90 mass % of water in the feed mixture. The diffusion coefficients in a water/acetic acid mixture had an effect on the membrane permselectivity. The Arrhenius equation was used to calculate the activation parameters for permeation as well as for the diffusion of water and of acetic acid. The activation energy values for the permeation flux varied from 97 to 28 kJ/mol. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 83: 244–258, 2002  相似文献

Various radiopaque compounds of a poly (ether‐block‐amide) copolymer resin filled with fine barium sulfate particles were prepared by melt mixing. Material properties of the filled compounds were investigated using various material characterization techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic rheometry, uniaxial tensile test, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The effects of the filler and its concentration on the measured material properties are evaluated. It has been found that in addition to its well‐known X‐ray radiopacity, the filler is quite effective in reinforcing some mechanical properties of the copolymer, including modulus of elasticity and yield strength. More interestingly, it has been observed that at low loading concentrations near 10 wt %, the filler may also act as a rigid, inorganic toughener for the copolymer by improving the postyield material extensibility of strain hardening against ultimate material fracture. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ether‐block‐amide) (PEBA) films were grafted with acrylic acid (AAc) by gamma radiation, using the oxidative pre‐irradiation technique. The effect of dose, monomer concentration, temperature, and reaction time on the graft percentage of AAc onto PEBA was studied. The modified material PEBA‐g‐AAc was characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy, and water contact angle. It was found that PEBA films did not suffer degradation at low doses (<30 kGy) during the grafting process. Additionally, PEBA‐g‐AAc was proved as drug delivery system using vancomycin as drug model. The PEBA‐g‐AAc with 39 and 98% of AAc loaded 63 and 98 mg g?1, respectively. The release profiles showed a sustained delivery by 48 h with a partial retention of drug, which depends of grafting percentage. The microbiological tests showed that PEBA‐g‐AAc was able to inhibit the growing of Staphylococcus aureus in three consecutive challenges. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. We carried out the free‐radical copolymerization of N‐phenylmaleimide with acrylic acid and acrylamide with an equimolar feed monomer ratio. We carried out the synthesis of the copolymers in dioxane at 70°C with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator and a total monomer concentration of 2.5M. The copolymer compositions were obtained by elemental analysis and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The hydrophilic polymers were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Additionally, viscosimetric measurements of the copolymers were performed. Hydrophilic poly(N‐phenylmaleimide‐co‐acrylic acid) and poly(N‐phenylmaleimide‐co‐acrylamide) were used for the separation of a series of metal ions in the aqueous phase with the liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention method in the heterogeneous phase. The method is based on the retention of inorganic ions by the polymer in conjunction with membrane filtration and subsequent separation of low‐molecular‐mass species from the formed polymer/metal‐ion complex. The polymer could bind several metal ions, such as Cr(III), Co (II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Fe(III) inorganic ions, in aqueous solution at pH values of 3, 5, and 7. The interaction of the inorganic ions with the hydrophilic polymer was determined as a function of pH and a filtration factor. Hydrophilic polymeric reagents with strong metal‐complexing properties were synthesized and used to separate those complexed from noncomplexed ions in the heterogeneous phase. The polymers exhibited a high retention capability at pH values of 5 and 7. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2006  相似文献

Hollow‐fiber ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared from blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) with a dry/wet phase inversion method. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and N,N‐dimethylacetamide were used as the additive and solvent, respectively. The effects of the PEG concentration in the dope solution as an additive on the cross sections and inner and outer surface morphologies, permeability, and separation performance of the hollow fibers were examined. The mean pore size, pore size distribution, and mean roughness of both the inner and outer surfaces of the produced hollow fibers were determined by atomic force microscopy. Also, the mechanical properties of the hollow‐fiber membranes were investigated. UF experiments were conducted with aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP; K‐90, Mw = 360 kDa). From the results, we found that the PVC/PS hollow‐fiber membranes had two layers with a fingerlike structure. These two layers were changed from a wide and long to a thin and short morphology with increasing PEG concentration. A novel and until now undescribed shape of the nodules in the outer surfaces, which was denoted as a sea‐waves shape, was observed. The outer and inner pore sizes both increased with increasing PEG concentration. The water permeation flux of the hollow fibers increased from 104 to 367 L m?2 h?1 bar?1) at higher PEG concentrations. The PVP rejection reached the highest value at a PEG concentration of 4 wt %, whereas at higher values (from 4 to 9 wt %), the rejection decreased. The same trend was found also for the tensile stress at break, Young's modulus, and elongation at break of the hollow fibers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. For the modification of an electrospun poly (vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF–HFP) membrane for its potential use as an electrolyte or separator in lithium batteries, poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) was introduced into a polymer solution for electrospinning. A post heat treatment of the as‐electrospun membrane at an elevated temperature was performed for PEGDMA polymerization, and this was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that no significant variations in the membrane morphology were detected when a small amount of PEGDMA (PVDF–HFP/PEGDMA mass ratio = 4/1) was incorporated. This electrospun membrane after heat treatment at 130°C for 2 h exhibited a significantly higher tensile strength (6.26 ± 0.22 MPa) than that of an electrospun PVDF–HFP membrane (3.28 ± 0.35 MPa) without PEGDMA. The porosity and liquid absorption of the electrospun PVDF–HFP/PEGDMA (4/1) membrane were 70.0 ± 1.6% and 267 ± 11%, respectively, lower than those of the electrospun PVDF–HFP membrane (76.5 ± 0.3% and 352 ± 15%) because of the introduction of PEGDMA. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: To obtain a biodegradable thermoplastic elastomer, a series of poly(ester‐ether)s based on poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), with various mass fractions and molecular weights of PPG, were synthesized through melt polycondensation. RESULTS: The copolyesters were characterized using 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, mechanical testing and enzymatic degradation. The results indicated that poly(ester‐ether)s with high molecular weights were successfully synthesized. The composition of the copolyesters agreed very well with the feed ratio. With increasing content of the soft PPG segment, the glass transition temperature decreased gradually while the melting temperature, the crystallization temperature and the relative degree of crystallinity decreased. Mechanical testing demonstrated that the toughness of PBS was improved significantly. The elongation at break of the copolyesters was 2–5 times that of the original PBS. Most of the poly(ester‐ether) specimens were so flexible that they were not broken in Izod impact experiments. At the same time, the enzymatic degradation rate of PBS was enhanced. Also, the difference in molecular weight of PPG led to properties being changed to some extent among the copolyesters. CONCLUSION: The synthesized poly(ester‐ether)s having excellent flexibility and biodegradability extend the application of PBS into the areas where biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers are needed. A new blended membrane was prepared and tested by pervaporation of light oil, a mixture of five alcohols plus water. The blended membrane was synthesized by blending poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid‐co‐maleic acid) sodium salt in the presence of sulfuric acid to dope the reaction. We tested several membranes in order to choose the adequate composition to have the best permselectivity. The PVA(60)–PAA‐co‐maleic acid(40) membrane was selected as it was found to be highly selective. Sorption experiments were performed using binary and ternary water–alcohol solutions. The influence of temperature and feed composition on the selectivity and flux in pervaporation was investigated for two different binary mixtures (water/ethanol, water/isobutanol) and one ternary system (water/ethanol/isobutanol). This membrane presents good permselective properties, high water flux, and good selectivity and can even be used for high‐water activities The performances of this new membrane were compared to those obtained with the PVA(90)–PAA(10) membrane synthesized recently: The fluxes observed for the water–ethanol separation were of the same order of magnitude but the selectivity was found to be much higher. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(urethane‐urea)s (PUUs) from 2,4‐tolylene diisocyanate (2,4‐TDI), poly(oxytetramethylene)diols (PTMO) or poly(butylene adipate)diol (PBA), and various diamines were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and density measurements. Transport properties of the dense PUU‐based membranes were investigated in the pervaporation of benzene–cyclohexane mixtures. It was shown that the pervaporation characteristics of the prepared membranes depend on the structure and length of the PUU segments. The PBA‐based PUUs exhibit good pervaporation performance along with a very good durability in separation of the azeotropic benzene–cyclohexane mixture. They are characterized by the flux value of 25.5 (kg μm m−2 h−1) and the separation factor of 5.8 at 25°C, which is a reasonable compromise between the both transport parameters. The PTMO‐based PUUs display high permeation flux and low selectivity in separation of the benzene‐rich mixtures. At the feed composition of 5% benzene in cyclohexane, their selectivity and flux are in the range of 3.2 to 11.7 and 0.4 to 40.3, respectively, depending on the length of the hard and soft segments. The chemical constitution of the hard segments resulting from the chain extender used does not affect the selectivity of the PUU membranes. It enables, however, the permeability of the membranes to be tailored. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 71: 1615–1625, 1999  相似文献

A series of novel degradable triarm poly(propylene oxide)‐block‐polylactide (PPO‐b‐PLA) copolymers was synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide (LLA) or D ,L ‐lactide (DLLA) using low unsaturated PPO triols as macromolecular initiator. The chemical structures of the resulting copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR) spectroscopy. Combination of FTIR, GPC, and NMR results confirmed the formation of PPO‐b‐PLA copolymers. One glass transition was observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), suggesting good miscibility between PPO and PLA segments in the copolymers. DSC and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction demonstrated that PPO‐b‐PLLA copolymers were semicrystalline materials, and the crystallinity increased with increasing the PLLA content. In contrast, PPO‐b‐PDLLA copolymers were totally amorphous. The PPO‐b‐PLA copolymers exhibited improved thermal stability when compared with PPO polyols according to thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal degradation behavior of the copolymers depended on the composition. Polyurethane foams were prepared by crosslinking PPO and PPO‐b‐PLA copolymers using isocyanate. Alkaline degradation of the foams was investigated in 10 wt/vol % NaOH at 80°C. The results show that the novel PPO‐b‐PLA copolymers could be promising as degradable polymeric materials. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

A modified new aromatic diacid, bis[(4‐carboxyphenyl) 4‐benzamide] dimethylsilane (IV) with preformed amide linkages and a silicon moiety was synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR, mass spectroscopy, and a physical constant. Novel poly(amide‐amide)s were synthesized from IV and aromatic diamines by Yamazaki's direct polyamidation method in N‐methyl pyrrolidinone. The polymers were obtained in excellent yields and showed reduced viscosities in the range of 0.42–6.15 dL/g. They were readily soluble in aprotic polar solvents. These poly(amide‐amide)s showed glass‐transition temperatures of 303–378°C as measured by DSC and showed no weight loss below 377°C in a nitrogen atmosphere. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
