Poly(butyl acrylate‐co‐methyl methacrylate)‐montmorillonite (MMT) waterborne nanocomposites were successfully synthesized by semibatch emulsion polymerization. The syntheses of the nanocomposites were performed in presence of sodium montmorillonite (Na‐MMT) and organically modified montmorillonite (O‐MMT). O‐MMT was used directly after the modification of Na‐MMT with dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium chloride. Both Na‐MMT and O‐MMT were sonified to obtain nanocomposites with 47 wt % solids and 3 wt % Na‐MMT or O‐MMT content. Average particle sizes of Na‐MMT nanocomposites were measured as 110–150 nm while O‐MMT nanocomposites were measured as 200–350 nm. Both Na‐MMT and O‐MMT increased thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties (water vapor and oxygen permeability) of the pristine copolymer explicitly. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope studies show that exfoliated morphology was obtained. The gloss values of O‐MMT nanocomposites were found to be higher than that of the pristine copolymer. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42373.  相似文献

Summary: Hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) was melt compounded with montmorillonite (MMT) and organophilic modified MMTs prior to sulfur curing. In contrast to the micro‐composite formation resulting from the compounding of the HNBR and pristine MMT, the modified MMTs (i.e., octadecylamine: MMT‐ODA, octadecyltrimethylamine: MMT‐ODTMA, methyltallow‐bis(2‐hydroxyethyl) quaternary ammonium: MMT‐MTH intercalants) produced nanocomposites. It was found that the organoclay with primary amine intercalant (cf. MMT‐ODA) gave confined structures along with the exfoliated/intercalated structures. This was traced to its reactivity with the curatives. By contrast, the organoclays containing less reactive quaternary ammonium compounds (cf. MMT‐ODTMA, MMT‐MTH) were exfoliated and intercalated based on X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. The hydroxyl functional groups of the MMT‐MTH supported the clay dispersion. The better adhesion between MMT‐MTH and HNBR was explained by hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl groups of the intercalant and the acrylonitrile group of the HNBR matrix. This HNBR/MMT‐MTH nanocomposite showed the best mechanical properties as verified by tensile mechanical tests and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The high tensile strength along with the high elongation at break for the rubber nanocomposites were attributed to the ability of the ‘clay network’ to dissipate the input energy upon uniaxial loading.

The main objective of this study was to synthesize and characterize the properties of ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM)/clay nanocomposites. Pristine clay, sodium montmorillonite (Na+–MMT), was intercalated with hexadecyl ammonium ion to form modified organoclay (16Me–MMT) and the effect of intercalation toward the change in interlayer spacing of the silicate layers was studied by X‐ray diffraction, which showed that the increase in interlayer spacing in Na+–MMT by 0.61 nm is attributed to the intercalation of hexadecyl ammonium ion within the clay layers. In the case of EPDM/16Me–MMT nanocomposites, the basal reflection peak was shifted toward a higher angle. However, gallery height remained more or less the same for different EPDM nanocomposites with organoclay content up to 8 wt %. The nanostructure of EPDM/clay composites was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, which established the coexistence of intercalated and exfoliated clay layers with an average layer thickness in the nanometer range within the EPDM matrix. The significant improvement in thermal stability and mechanical properties reflects the high‐performance nanocomposite formation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid latices of poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) were synthesized via in situ miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of 3 and 6 wt % organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT). Three different ammonium salts: cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (Dodigen), and distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (Praepagen), were investigated as organic modifiers. Increased affinity for organic liquids was observed after organic modification of the MMT. Stable hybrid latices were obtained even though miniemulsion stability was disturbed to some extent by the presence of the OMMTs during the synthesis. Highly intercalated and exfoliated polymer‐MMT nanocomposites films were produced with good MMT dispersion throughout the polymeric matrix. Materials containing MMT modified with the 16 carbons alkyl chain salt (CTAC) resulted in the largest increments of storage modulus, indicating that single chain quaternary salts provide higher increments on mechanical properties. Films presenting exfoliated structure resulted in the largest increments in the onset temperature of decomposition. For the range of OMMT loading studied, the nanocomposite structure influenced more significantly the thermal stability properties of the hybrid material than did the OMMT loading. The film containing 3 wt % MMT modified with the two 18 carbons alkyl chains salt (Praepagen) provided the highest increment of onset temperature of decomposition. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanocomposites based on biodegradable poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) and layered silicates (montmorillonite, MMT) were prepared either by melt interaction with PCL or by in situ ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone as promoted by the so‐called coordination‐insertion mechanism. Both non‐modified clays (Na+ ‐MMT) and silicates modified by various alkylammonium cations were studied. Mechanical and thermal properties were examined by tensile testing and thermogravimetric analysis. Even at a filler content as low as 3 wt% of inorganic layered silicate, the PCL‐layered silicate nanocomposites exhibited improved mechanical properties (higher Young's modulus) and increased thermal stability as well as enhanced flame retardant characteristics as a result of a charring effect. It was shown that the formation of PCL‐based nanocomposites depended not only on the nature of the ammonium cation and related functionality but also on the selected synthetic route, melt intercalation vs. in situ intercalative polymerization. Interestingly enough, when the intercalative polymerization of ?‐caprolactone was carried out in the presence of MMT organo‐modified with ammonium cations bearing hydroxyl functions, nanocomposites with much improved mechanical properties were recovered. Those hybrid polyester layered silicate nanocomposites were characterized by a covalent bonding between the polyester chains and the clay organo‐surface as a result of the polymerization mechanism, which was actually initiated from the surface hydroxyl functions adequately activated by selected tin (II) or tin (IV) catalysts.  相似文献

Nanocomposites based on biodegradable poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) and layered silicates were prepared by the melt intercalation method. Nonmodified montmorillonite (MMT) and organo‐modified MMTs (DA‐M, ODA‐M, and LEA‐M) by the protonated ammonium cations of dodecylamine, octadecylamine, and N‐lauryldiethanolamine, respectively, were used as the layered silicates. The comparison of interlayer spacing between clay and PBAT composites with inorganic content 3 wt % measured by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the formation of intercalated nanocomposites in DA‐M and LEA‐M. In case of PBAT/ODA‐M (3 wt %), no clear peak related to interlayer spacing was observed. From morphological studies using transmission electron microscopy, the ODA‐M was found to be finely and homogeneously dispersed in the matrix polymer, indicating the formation of exfoliated nanocomposite. When ODA‐M content was increased, the XRD peak related to intercalated clay increased. Although the exfoliated ODA‐M (3 wt %) nanocomposite showed a lower tensile modulus than the intercalated DA‐M and LEA‐M (3 wt %) composites, the PBAT/ODA‐M composite with inorganic content 5 wt % showed the highest tensile modulus, strength, and elongation at break among the PBAT composites with inorganic content 5 wt %. Their tensile properties are discussed in relation to the degree of crystallinity of the injection molded samples. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 95: 386–392, 2005  相似文献

Glycerol polyglycidyl ether (GPE) and polyglycerol polyglycidyl ether (PGPE) were cured with ε‐poly(L ‐lysine) (PL) using epoxy/amine ratios of 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 to create bio‐based epoxy cross‐linked resins. When PGPE was used as an epoxy resin and the epoxy/amine ratio was 1 : 1, the cured neat resin showed the greatest glass transition temperature (Tg), as measured by differential scanning calorimetry. Next, the mixture of PGPE, PL, and montomorillonite (MMT) at an epoxy/amine ratio of 1 : 1 in water was dried and cured finally at 110°C to create PGPE‐PL/MMT composites. The X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed that the composites with MMT content 7–15 wt % were exfoliated nanocomposites and the composite with MMT content 20 wt % was an intercalated nanocomposite. The Tg and storage modulus at 50–100°C for the PGPE‐PL/MMT composites measured by DMA increased with increasing MMT content until 15 wt % and decreased at 20 wt %. The tensile strength and modulus of the PGPE‐PL/MMT composites (MMT content 15 wt %: 42 and 5300 MPa) were much greater than those of the cured PGPE‐PL resin (4 and 6 MPa). Aerobic biodegradability of the PGPE‐PL in an aqueous medium was ~ 4% after 90 days, and the PGPE‐PL/MMT nanocomposites with MMT content 7–15 wt % showed lower biodegradability. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of multimetallic layered double hydroxides‐g ‐poly(?‐caprolactone) (LDHs‐g ‐PCL) was explored by in situ ring‐opening polymerization, considering layered clay's improvement on barrier properties in polymer films. LDHs/PCL nanocomposites were prepared by blending LDHs‐g ‐PCL and pure PCL via solution casting method. With incorporation of as low as 0.2 wt % of LDHs, LDHs/PCL nanocomposites exhibited excellent mechanical performance with tensile strength and elongation at break over 45 MPa and 837%, respectively. Compared with pure PCL, the O2 permeability of LDHs/PCL nanocomposites decreased by nearly 78% as LDHs content increased up to 1 wt %. It was revealed that the key parameter to improve the barrier properties is not only the high aspect ratio of layered clays but also the specific interactions that they develop in the polymers matrix. Due to the merits of its biodegradation and physical properties, LDHs/PCL nanocomposites could be potential materials applied in packaging industry widely. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. A novel process for the preparation of poly(propylene)/montmorillonite (PP/MMT) nanocomposites was developed via simultaneous solution grafting‐intercalation in the presence of a reactive ammonium cation that can be grafted onto poly(propylene). Partially introducing this reactive cation into long alkyl ammonium modified MMT interlayers can transfer a conventional microcomposite into intercalated/exfoliated nanocomposites, which was evidenced by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The PP chains were tethered onto the clay surface through the bridge of the reactive ammonium cations, which can be characterized by FTIR. The bridged chemical bonding also results in a good interface adhesion between PP and MMT, as confirmed by SEM investigation. The enhanced thermal properties of PP/MMT nanocomposites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94: 1018–1023, 2004  相似文献

Poly(L ‐lactic acid)/o‐MMT nanocomposites, incorporating various amounts of organically modified montmorillonite (o‐MMT; 0–10 wt %), were prepared by solution intercalation. The montmorillonite (MMT) was organically modified with dilauryl dimethyl ammonium bromide (DDAB) by ion exchange. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) reveal that the o‐MMT was exfoliated in a poly(L ‐lactic acid), (PLLA) matrix. A series of the test specimens were prepared and subjected to isothermal crystallization at various temperatures (T1T5). The DSC plots revealed that the PLLA/o‐MMT nanocomposites that were prepared under nonisothermal conditions exhibited an obvious crystallization peak and recrystallization, but neat PLLA exhibited neither. The PLLA/o‐MMT nanocomposites (2–10 wt %) yielded two endothermic peaks only under isothermal conditions at low temperature (T1), and the intensity of Tm2 (the higher melting point) was proportional to the o‐MMT content (at around 171°C). The melting point of the test samples increased with the isothermal crystallization temperature. In the Avrami equation, the constant of the crystallization rate (k) was inversely proportional to the isothermal crystallization temperature and increased with the o‐MMT content, especially at low temperature (T1). The Avrami exponent (n) of the PLLA/o‐MMT nanocomposites (4–10 wt %) was 2.61–3.56 higher than that of neat PLLA, 2.10–2.56, revealing that crystallization occurred in three dimensions. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanocomposites with unique material properties have been prepared from synthetic plastics and nanosilicates (nanoclay) until now, but not from biopolymers such as starch. The primary challenge in making biopolymeric nanocomposites is to achieve strong adhesion between nanoclay and polymer matrix. For the first time nanocomposites with superior properties have been successfully made from starch‐polycaprolactone (PCL) blends in the presence of montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay. Reactive extrusion results showed that addition of a modified nanoclay at 3 % wt level increased elongation almost fourfold over that of pristine starch–PCL blends. X‐ray diffractions results showed dispersion of clay in the polymer matrix. The nanocomposites have better solvent‐resistance properties because of resistance to diffusion offered by clay platelets in the polymer matrix. A novel aromatic amine organo‐modifier synthesized in our previous work was used to treat montmorillonite (MMT) and the organo‐modified MMT was used to prepare poly(etherimide) (PEI)/MMT nanocomposites by a melt intercalation method. MMT treated by this amine exhibited large layer‐to‐layer spacing and a high ion‐exchange ratio (>95%). The nanocomposites were characterized with X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic mechanical analysis, a universal tester, thermogravimetric analysis, and by differential scanning calorimetry. The results of XRD and TEM showed that the nanocomposites formed exfoliated structures even when the MMT content was 10 wt %. When the MMT content was below 3 wt %, the PEI/MMT nanocomposites were strengthened and toughened at the same time. The nanocomposites also showed marked decreases in coefficient of thermal expansion and solvent uptake. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 1857–1863, 2003  相似文献

The properties of regioregular(R) (98.5 mol % H‐T) and regioirregular(I) (80.5 mol % H‐T) poly(3‐dodecyl thiophene)(P3DDT)—organically modified montmorillonite (om‐MMT) clay nanocomposites obtained from solvent‐cast and melt‐cooled procedures are compared. The solvent‐cast P3DDTI nanocomposites showed partially exfoliated clay structure but P3DDTR nanocomposites showed multistack exfoliation. Type 1 crystalline polymorph was produced in solvent‐cast systems whereas melt‐cooled P3DDTI samples showed mesomorphic structure. Storage modulus of P3DDTI nanocomposites increased with clay concentration showing a maximum increase of 255%. The UV‐vis spectra showed blue shift of π–π* transition band and photoluminescence spectra indicated seven times increase of normalized intensity in solvent cast P3DDTI composites. DC conductivity and IV characteristic curves showed increased insulating properties with om‐clay concentration. The physical, mechanical, and optical properties of P3DDTI nanocomposites are more improved than that of P3DDTR nanocomposites and from their pristine polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The dielectric dispersion and relaxation process in melt‐compounded hot‐pressed poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–montmorillonite (MMT) clay nanocomposite films of 0–20 wt % MMT concentration were investigated over the frequency range 20 Hz to 1 MHz at ambient temperature. X‐ray diffraction study of the nanocomposites evidences that the PEO has been intercalated into the MMT interlayer galleries with a helical‐type multilayer structures, which results the formation of unique parallel plane PEO–MMT layered structures. The relaxation times corresponding to PEO chain segmental motion were determined from the loss peak frequencies of different dielectric formalisms and the same is used to explore the interactions compatibility between PEO molecules and the MMT nano platelets. It is revealed that the loading of only 1 wt % MMT in PEO matrix significantly increases the PEO chain segmental motion due to intercalation, which further varies anomalously with increase of MMT concentration. The real part of dielectric function at 1 MHz, relaxation time, and dc conductivity of these melt‐compounded nanocomposites were compared with the aqueous solution‐cast PEO–MMT films. Considering the comparative changes in the values of various dielectric parameters, the effect of synthesization route on the intercalated/exfoliated‐MMT structures and the PEO chain dynamics were discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyamide 6 (PA6) nanocomposites based on epoxy resin‐modified montmorillonite (EP‐MMT) were prepared by melt processing using a typical twin‐screw extruder. X‐ray diffraction combined with transmission electron microscopy was applied to elucidate the structure and morphology of PA6/EP‐MMT nanocomposites, suggesting a nearly exfoliated structure in the nanocomposite with 2 wt % EP‐MMT (PA6/2EP‐MMT) and a partial exfoliated‐partial intercalated structure in PA6/4 wt %EP‐MMT nanocomposite (PA6/4EP‐MMT). The thermogravimetric analysis under air atmosphere was conducted to characterize the thermal–oxidative degradation behavior of the material, and the result indicated that the presence of EP‐MMT could inhibit the thermal‐oxidative degradation of PA6 effectively. Accelerated heat aging in an air circulating oven at 150°C was applied to assess the thermal–oxidative stability of PA6 nanocomposites through investigation of reduced viscosity, tensile properties, and chemical structure at various time intervals. The results indicated that the incorporation of EP‐MMT effectively enhanced the thermal–oxidative stability of PA6, resulting in the high retention of reduced viscosity and tensile strength, and the low ratio of terminal carboxyl group to amino group. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Na‐montmorillonite/polyethyleneimine‐g‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA) nanocomposite latexes were prepared by soap‐free emulsion polymerization in the aqueous suspension of Na‐MMT. The exfoliated morphology of the nanocomposites was confirmed by XRD and TEM. With the aim of improving morphology and mechanical properties of natural rubber latex (NRL) films, the synthesized Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA nanocomposites were mixed with NRL by latex compounding technology. The results of SEM and AFM analysis showed that the surface of NRL/Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA film was smoother and denser than that of pristine NRL film while Na‐MMT was dispersed uniformly on the fracture surface of the modified films, which suggested the good compatibility between NRL and Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA. The tensile strength of NRL/Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA films was increased greatly by 85% with 10 phr Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA when Na‐MMT content was 3 wt % and the elongation at break also increased from 930% to 1073% at the same time. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylic copolymer/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites for warp sizing were prepared in the presence of Na+‐MMT by the in situ intercalative polymerization of acrylic acid, acrylamide, and methyl acrylate in water solution. The properties of the solution and cast film were tested according to an application in sizing process of the nanocomposite size with various MMT contents. The results indicate that, for an exfoliated structure corresponding to the MMT content increasing to 7 wt %, the performance parameters of solution viscosity, glass‐transition temperature, and tensile strength of the film increased and the moisture sorption, abrasion loss, and elongation at break of the film decreased. When the intercalated structure of MMT was 9 wt %, the gathered MMT layers acted as a common inorganic filler in the copolymer matrix, with limited contribution to the properties of the composite. The adhesion work of the nanocomposite solution was calculated by use of the Young–Dupre relation, which showed maximum values at an MMT content of 3 wt % on the surfaces of both the polyester and cellulose films. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyethylene‐based ternary nanocomposites were prepared with different clay structures, obtained by the modification of purified Resadiye bentonite as the reinforcement, a random terpolymer of ethylene, butyl acrylate, and maleic anhydride with the trade name Lotader3210 as the compatibilizer, and linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) as the polymer matrix in an intensive batch mixer. The quaternary ammonium/phosphonium salts used for the modification of bentonite were dimethyldioctadecyl ammonium (DMDA) chloride (Cl), tetrakisdecyl ammonium (TKA) bromide (Br), and tributylhexadecyl phosphonium (TBHP) Br. The effects of the physical properties and structure of the organoclay on the clay dispersion were studied at different clay contents (2 and 5 wt %) and at a compatibilizer/organoclay ratio of 2.5. The extent of organoclay dispersion was determined by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and was verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), mechanical testing, and rheological analysis. XRD analysis showed that the nanocomposite with the organoclay DMDA contained intercalated silicate layers, as also verified by TEM. The TEM analysis of the nanocomposites with TBHP exhibited intercalated/partially exfoliated clay dispersion. TKA, with a crowded alkyl environment, sheltered and hindered the intercalation of polymer chains through the silicate layers. In comparison to pure LLDPE, nanocomposites with a 33–41% higher Young's modulus, 16–9% higher tensile strength, and 75–144% higher elongation at break were produced with DMDA and TBHP, respectively (at 5 wt % organoclay). The storage modulus increased by 807–1393%, and the dynamic viscosity increased by 196–339% with respect to pure LLDPE at low frequencies for the samples with DMDA and TBHP (at 5 wt % organoclay). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Soybean oil‐based polymer nanocomposites were synthesized from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) combined with styrene monomer and montmorillonite (MMT) clay by using in situ free radical polymerization reaction. Special attention was paid to the modification of MMT clay, which was carried out by methacryl‐functionalized and quaternized derivative of methyl oleate intercalant. It was synthesized from olive oil triglyceride, as a renewable intercalant. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of increased nanofiller loading in thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The nanocomposites exhibited improved thermal and dynamic mechanical properties compared with neat acrylated epoxidized soybean oil based polymer matrix. The desired exfoliated nanocomposite structure was achieved when the OrgMMT loading was 1 and 2 wt % whereas partially exfoliated nanocomposite was obtained in 3 wt % loading. It was found that about 400 and 500% increments in storage modulus at glass transition and rubbery regions, respectively were achieved at 2 wt % clay loading compared to neat polymer matrix while the lowest thermal degradation rate was gained by introducing 3 wt % clay loading. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two polymerizable cationic surfactants, vinylbenzyl n‐alkyldimethyl (n = 12 or 18) ammonium chlorides, were used for functionalization of montmorillonite (MMT) and preparation of unsaturated polyester (UP)‐clay nanocomposites. Polymerizable organophilic clays were prepared by exchanging the sodium ions of MMT with vinylbenzyldodecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (VDAC) or vinylbenzyloctadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (VOAC) in an aqueous medium. The dispersion of organoclays in UP led to gel formation. UP/VDAC‐MMT resulted in intercalated nanocomposites while UP/VOAC‐MMT formed partially exfoliated nanocomposites. The nanocomposites exhibited higher dynamic modulus than pristine UP.  相似文献
