Optimization of Fenton process for the treatment of landfill leachate   总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
The treatment of landfill leachate by Fenton process was carried out in a batch reactor. The effect of operating conditions such as reaction time, pH, H2O2 to Fe(II) molar ratio, Fenton's reagent dosage, initial COD strength, feeding mode, the type of polymer, and temperature on the efficacy of Fenton process was investigated. It is demonstrated that Fenton's reagent can effectively degrade leachate organics. Fenton process was so fast that it was complete in 30 min. The oxidation of organic materials in the leachate was pH dependent and the optimal pH was 2.5. The favorable H2O2 to Fe(II) molar ratio was 1.5, and organic removal increased as dosage increased at the favorable H2O2 to Fe(II) molar ratio. The efficacy of Fenton process was improved by adding Fenton's reagent in multiple steps than that in a single step. Furthermore, the stepwise addition of both hydrogen peroxide and ferrous iron was more effective than that of hydrogen peroxide only. Sludge settling characteristics were much improved with the addition of the proper polymer. Temperature gave a positive effect on organic removal.  相似文献

The treatment of landfill leachate by Fenton process was carried out in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The effect of operating conditions such as reaction time, hydraulic retention time, pH, H(2)O(2) to Fe(II) molar ratio, Fenton's reagent dosage, initial COD strength, and temperature on the efficacy of Fenton process was investigated. It is demonstrated that Fenton's reagent can effectively degrade leachate organics. Fenton process reached the steady state after three times of hydraulic retention. The oxidation of organic materials in the leachate was pH dependent and the optimal pH was 2.5. The favorable H(2)O(2) to Fe(II) molar ratio was 3, and organic removal increased as dosage increased at the favorable H(2)O(2) to Fe(II) molar ratio. Temperature gave a positive effect on organic removal.  相似文献

The effectiveness of the Fenton's reagent (H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+)) in the treatment of carpet dyeing wastewater was investigated under different operational conditions, namely, H(2)O(2) and FeSO(4) concentrations, initial pH and temperature. Up to 95% COD removal efficiency was attained using 5.5 g/l FeSO(4) and 385 g/l H(2)O(2) at a pH of 3, temperature of 50 degrees C. The H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+) ratio (g/g) was found to be between 95 and 290 for maximum COD removal. It was noteworthy that, keeping H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+) ratio constant within the range of 95-290, it became possible to decrease FeSO(4) concentration to 1.1 g/l and H(2)O(2) concentration to 96.3 g/l, still achieving nearly the same COD removal efficiency. The relative efficiencies of Fenton's oxidation and coagulation stages revealed that Fenton's coagulation removed organic compounds which were not removed by Fenton's oxidation, indicating that the Fenton's coagulation acted as a polishing step.  相似文献

Degradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous medium by electro-Fenton method   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The degradation of 4-nitrophenol by electro-Fenton (E-Fenton) method was carried out in batch recirculation mode. The effect of operating conditions such as electrical current, Fenton's reagent dosage, Fe(II) to H(2)O(2) molar ratio, and H(2)O(2) feeding time on the efficiency of E-Fenton process was investigated. It was found that E-Fenton method showed the synergetic effect on COD removal. The increase of Fenton's reagent dosage, Fe(II) to H(2)O(2) molar ratio, and the electrical current would lead to the increase of COD removal efficiency. Continuous addition of hydrogen peroxide was more effective than the addition of hydrogen peroxide in a single step and there existed an optimal H(2)O(2) feeding time for COD removal. The reaction system was modeled as a plug flow reactor (PFR) in series with a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), and the pseudo-first order rate constant of COD removal was determined from the model based on the experimental data.  相似文献

Removal of COD from landfill leachate by electro-Fenton method   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
The treatment of landfill leachate by electro-Fenton (E-Fenton) method was carried out in a batch electrolytic reactor. The effect of operating conditions such as reaction time, the distance between the electrodes, electrical current, H(2)O(2) to Fe(II) molar ratio, Fenton's reagent dosage and H(2)O(2) feeding mode on the efficacy of E-Fenton process was investigated. It is demonstrated that E-Fenton method can effectively degrade leachate organics. The process was very fast in the first 30 min and then slowed down till it was complete in 75 min. There exists an optimal distance range between the electrodes so that an over 7% higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was achieved than the electrodes positioned beyond this range. COD removal efficiency increased with the increasing current, but further increase of current would reduce the removal efficiency. Organic removal increased as Fenton's reagent dosage increased at the fixed H(2)O(2) to Fe(II) molar ratio. COD removal was only 65% when hydrogen peroxide alone was applied to the electrolytic reactor, and the presence of ferrous ion greatly improved COD removal. COD removal efficiency increased with the increase of ferrous ion dosage at the fixed hydrogen peroxide dose and reached highest at the 0.038 mol/L of ferrous ion concentration. COD removal would decrease when ferrous ion concentration was higher than 0.038 mol/L. The stepwise or continuous addition of hydrogen peroxide was more effective than the addition of hydrogen peroxide in a single step. E-Fenton method showed the synergetic effect for COD removal as it achieved higher COD removal than the total COD removal by electrochemical method and Fenton's reagent.  相似文献

The applicability of Fenton's oxidation to improve the biodegradability of a pharmaceutical wastewater to be treated biologically was investigated. The wastewater was originated from a factory producing a variety of pharmaceutical chemicals. Treatability studies were conducted under laboratory conditions with all chemicals (having COD varying from 900 to 7000 mg/L) produced in the factory in order to determine the operational conditions to utilize in the full-scale treatment plant. Optimum pH was determined as 3.5 and 7.0 for the first (oxidation) and second stage (coagulation) of the Fenton process, respectively. For all chemicals, COD removal efficiency was highest when the molar ratio of H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+) was 150-250. At H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+) ratio of 155, 0.3M H(2)O(2) and 0.002 M Fe(2+), provided 45-65% COD removal. The wastewater treatment plant that employs Fenton oxidation followed by aerobic degradation in sequencing batch reactors (SBR), built after these treatability studies provided an overall COD removal efficiency of 98%, and compliance with the discharge limits. The efficiency of the Fenton's oxidation was around 45-50% and the efficiency in the SBR system which has two reactors each having a volume of 8m(3) and operated with a total cycle time of 1 day, was around 98%, regarding the COD removal.  相似文献

The applicability of Fenton's oxidation as an advanced treatment for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal from anaerobically treated poultry manure wastewater was investigated. The raw poultry manure wastewater, having a pH of 7.30 (+/-0.2) and a total COD of 12,100 (+/-910) mg/L was first treated in a 15.7 L of pilot-scale up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The UASB reactor was operated for 72 days at mesophilic conditions (32+/-2 degrees C) in a temperature-controlled environment with three different hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 15.7, 12 and 8.0 days, and with organic loading rates (OLR) between 0.650 and 1.783 kg COD/(m3day). Under 8.0 days of HRT, the UASB process showed a remarkable performance on total COD removal with a treatment efficiency of 90.7% at the day of 63. The anaerobically treated poultry manure wastewater was further treated by Fenton's oxidation process using Fe2+ and H2O2 solutions. Batch tests were conducted on the UASB effluent samples to determine the optimum operating conditions including initial pH, effects of H2O2 and Fe2+ dosages, and the ratio of H2O2/Fe2+. Preliminary tests conducted with the dosages of 100 mg Fe2+/L and 200 mg H2O2/L showed that optimal initial pH was 3.0 for both COD and color removal from the UASB effluent. On the basis of preliminary test results, effects of increasing dosages of Fe2+ and H2O2 were investigated. Under the condition of 400 mg Fe2+/L and 200 mg H2O2/L, removal efficiencies of residual COD and color were 88.7% and 80.9%, respectively. Under the subsequent condition of 100 mg Fe2+/L and 1200 mg H2O2/L, 95% of residual COD and 95.7% of residual color were removed from the UASB effluent. Results of this experimental study obviously indicated that nearly 99.3% of COD of raw poultry manure wastewater could be effectively removed by a UASB process followed by Fenton's oxidation technology used as a post-treatment unit.  相似文献

The use of an integrated treatment scheme consisting of wet hydrogen peroxide catalytic oxidation (WHPCO) followed by two-stage upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor (10l each) for the treatment of olive mill wastewater was the subject of this study. The diluted wastewater (1:1) was pre-treated using Fenton's reaction. Optimum operating conditions namely, pH, H(2)O(2) dose, Fe(+2), COD:H(2)O(2) ratio and Fe(+2):H(2)O(2) ratio were determined. The UASB reactor was fed continuously with the pre-treated wastewater. The hydraulic retention time was kept constant at 48h (24h for each stage). The conventional parameters such as COD, BOD, TOC, TKN, TP, TSS, oil and grease, and total phenols were determined. The concentrations of polyphenolic compounds in raw wastewater and effluents of each treatment step were measured using HPLC. The results indicated a good quality final effluent. Residual concentrations of individual organic compounds ranged from 0.432 mg l(-1) for rho-hydroxy-benzaldhyde to 3.273 mg l(-1) for cinnamic acid.  相似文献

The oxidation of leachate coming from the composting of two organic wastes (wastewater sludge and organic fraction of municipal solid wastes) using the Fenton's reagent was studied using different ratios [Fe(2+)]/[COD](0) and maintaining a ratio [H(2)O(2)]/[COD](0) equal to 1. The optimal conditions for Fenton reaction were found at a ratio [Fe(2+)]/[COD](0) equal to 0.1. Both leachates were significantly oxidized under these conditions in terms of COD removal (77 and 75% for leachate from wastewater sludge composting and leachate from organic fraction of municipal solid wastes, respectively) and BOD(5) removal (90 and 98% for leachate from wastewater sludge composting and leachate from organic fraction of municipal solid wastes, respectively). Fenton's reagent was found to oxidize preferably biodegradable organic matter of leachate. In consequence, a decrease in the biodegradability of leachates was observed after Fenton treatment for both leachates. Nevertheless, Fenton reaction proved to be a feasible technique for the oxidation of the leachate under study, and it can be considered a suitable treatment for this type of wastewaters.  相似文献

The degradation of olive mill wastewater (OMW) with hydroxyl radicals generated from zero-valent iron and hydrogen peroxide has been investigated by means of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and phenolic compounds analyses. The effects of the H2O2 dose, the pH and the organic matter concentration have been studied. The optimal experimental conditions were found to have continuous presence of iron metal, acid pH (2.0-4.0), and relatively concentrated hydrogen peroxide (9.5M). Coloration of OMW disappeared and phenolic compound decreased to 50% of initial concentration after 3h reaction time. The application of zero-valent Fe/H2O2 procedure permitted high removal efficiencies of pollutants from olive mill wastewater. The results show that zero-valent Fe/H2O2 could be considered as an effective alternative solution for the treatment of OMW or may be combined with a classical biological process to achieve high quality of effluent water.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of three chemical oxidation processes for increasing the biodegradability of aqueous diethanolamine solutions (aqueous DEA solutions), to be used as pre-treatments before a biological process. The raw aqueous DEA solution, sourced from a sour gas sweetening plant at a Mexican oil refinery, was first characterized by standardized physico-chemical methods. Then experiments were conducted on diluted aqueous DEA solutions to test the effects of Fenton's reagent, ozone and ozone-hydrogen peroxide on the removal of some physicochemical parameters of these solutions. Lastly, biodegradability tests based on Dissolved Organic Carbon Die Away OECD301-A, were carried out on a dilution of the raw aqueous DEA solution and on the treated aqueous DEA solutions, produced by applying the best experimental conditions determined during the aforementioned oxidation tests. Experimental results showed that for aqueous DEA solutions treated with Fenton's reagent, the best degradation rate (70%) was obtained at pH 2.8, with Fe(2+) and H(2)O(2) at doses of 1000 and 10,000 mg/L respectively. In the ozone process, the best degradation (60%) was observed in aqueous DEA solution (100 mg COD/L), using 100 mg O(3)/L at pH 5. In the ozone-hydrogen peroxide process, no COD or DOC removals were observed. The diluted spent diethanolamine solution showed its greatest increase in biodegradability after a reaction period of 28 days when treated with Fenton's reagent, but after only 15 days in the case of ozonation.  相似文献

The aim of our research was to determine appropriate treatment technique for effective treatment of heavily polluted tannery landfill leachate. We have accomplished several treatment experiments: (i) aerobic biological treatment, (ii) air stripping at various pH, (iii) adsorption to activated carbon, (iv) coagulation-flocculation and (v) advanced oxidation process with Fe(2+)/H(2)O(2). Efficiency of each procedure was monitored by chemical analysis and changes in biodegradability and acute toxicity were also evaluated (Vibrio fischeri and Daphnia magna). Biological treatment of raw leachate was effective only for very diluted leachate (up to 6Vol.%). It has been confirmed that air stripping at pH 11.0 effectively removed volatile organics and ammonia for 33% and 84%, respectively and contributed to lower toxicity of the leachate. Fenton's oxidation was the most effective among all used treatment procedures. COD removal reached 86%, biodegradability has been increased and toxicity reduced. Adsorption to activated carbon increased BOD(5)/COD ratio from 0.18 to 0.56 and it removed 40% of organics. Coagulation and flocculation procedures with FeCl(3) were also very effective. At lowered pH and added flocculant treatment efficiency reached 50%. But no method alone was effective enough to meet effluent limits for release into local surface waters. Future work was focused on the study of different promising treatment schemes, especially combination of Fenton's oxidation and biological treatment.  相似文献

Landfill leachate treatment by a coagulation-photooxidation process   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
This experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of treatment of landfill leachate by a coagulation-photooxidation process. The effects of different dosages of coagulant and different pH values on the coagulation processes were compared. The effect of different concentrations of sodium oxalate (Na(2)C(2)O(4)) on the treatment process was also studied after the coagulation was performed using FeCl(3).6H(2)O. The experimental results show that in the pH range of 3-8, the lower the pH value, the higher the efficiency of the treatment. A 24% removal of COD (chemical oxygen demand, mg(O(2)) x l(-1)) can be attained by the addition of 1000 mg x l(-1) FeCl(3). A 31% removal of COD can be attained after 4h of irradiation alone, and a 64% removal of COD can be attained after 4h irradiation at pH 3 with the addition of 500 mg x l(-1) FeCl(3).6H(2)O.  相似文献

Gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid) is a major pollutant present in the wastewater generated in the boiling cork process, as well as in other wastewaters from food manufacturing industries. Its decay in aqueous solutions has been studied by the action of several oxidation systems: monochromatic UV radiation alone and combined with hydrogen peroxide, Fenton's reagent and the combination Fenton's reagent with UV radiation (photo-Fenton system). The influence of the pH is discussed and the quantum yields are determined in the UV radiation system. Also, the influence of operating variables (initial concentrations of H2O2 and Fe(II), and pH) is established in the Fenton's reaction. The apparent pseudo-first-order rate constants are evaluated in all the experiments conducted in order to compare the efficiency of each one of the processes. Increases in the degradation levels of gallic acid are obtained in the combined processes in relation to the single UV radiation system, due to reactions of the very reactive OH*. These improvements are determined in every process by calculating the partial contribution to the overall decomposition rate of the radical pathways. For the oxidant concentrations applied, the most effective process in removing gallic acid was found to be the photo-Fenton system. The rate constant for the reaction of gallic acid with OH was also determined by means of a competition kinetics model, being its value 11.0+/-0.1 x 10(9)l mol(-1)s(-1).  相似文献

Photodegradation of direct yellow-12 using UV/H2O2/Fe2+   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
A detailed investigation of photodegradation of direct yellow-12 (DY12) using UV/H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+) has been carried out in a photochemical reactor. Experiments studied degradation as a function of concentration, decolorization and reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD). The effect of operating parameters, such as UV, pH, amount of Fenton's reagent (H(2)O(2) and FeSO(4)), and amount of DY12 dye has also been determined. It has been observed that simultaneous utilization of UV irradiation with Fenton's reagent increases the degradation rate of DY12 dye. The dye quickly losses its color and there is an appreciable decrease in COD value, indicating that the dissolved organic have been oxidized. The kinetics of degradation of the dye in dilute aqueous solutions follows pseudo-first order kinetics. Final products detected at the end of the reaction include NO(3)(-), NO(2)(-), N(2)O, NO(2), SO(2), CO(2) and CO. Results indicate that dye degradation is dependent upon pH, UV-intensity, concentration of Fenton's reagent and dye. Acidic pH has been found to be more suitable in comparison to neutral and alkaline. The optimum concentration of Fenton's reagent (H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+)) was found as 1500/500 mg l(-1) for 50 mg l(-1) DY12 dye in water at pH 4. The results indicate that the treatment of DY12 dye wastewater with UV/Fe(2+)/H(2)O(2) system is efficient.  相似文献

Removal of COD and color from livestock wastewater by the Fenton method   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The Fenton method was applied to the removal of chemical oxygen demand using chromate (CODcr) and color from high-strength livestock wastewater in which the initial CODcr was 5000-5700 mg/L. The optimum ratio of H2O2 (mg/L) to the initial CODcr was 1.05 and the optimum molar ratio of H2O2/Fe2+ was 2. The optimum initial pH and the optimum reaction time were 3.5-4 and 30 min, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the removal ratios of CODcr and color of the supernatant after static precipitation of the produced sludge were 88 and 95.4%, respectively. Addition of Fenton's reagents in several aliquots did not affect the efficiencies of CODcr and color removal.  相似文献

The chemical oxidation of the wastewaters generated during storage of table olives in NaCl brines, prior to their manufacturing process, was studied. Ozone alone produced COD removals in the range 14-23%, and a higher average removal of 73% of the aromatic compounds. The additional presence of hydrogen peroxide and UV radiation increased these values to 39% for COD and 86% for aromatics. However, UV radiation alone only gave a removal of 9% for COD and 27% for aromatics, and the additional presence of 0.5M H(2)O(2) led to 13% for COD and 38% for aromatics, respectively. The Fenton's reagent oxidation achieved a COD removal of 24% for the higher concentrations of Fe(2+) and H(2)O(2). The most effective process was the combination O(3)/UV/H(2)O(2) with total removals of 65 and 92% for the COD and aromatics, respectively. The aerobic treatment of these effluents gave a 66% removal regardless of the initial biomass concentration used, and a rate constant of 0.19 per day was obtained for the process by using the Contois model. Finally, the aerobic treatment of the wastewaters previously ozonated alone, and ozonated with UV radiation, gave increases in the COD removal and a final rate constant of 0.44 per day. The enhancements were due to the chemical oxidations, these procedures being suitable technologies as pre-treatments to subsequent biological processes for the purification of these residues.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of coagulation/flocculation treatment process on wastewater of Fumman Beverage Industry, Ibadan, Nigeria. The study also compared different dosages of coagulant, polyelectrolyte (non-ionic polyacrylamide) and different pH values of the coagulation processes. The effect of different dosages of polyelectrolyte in combination with coagulant was also studied. The results reveal that low pH values (3-8), enhance removal efficiency of the contaminants. Percentage removal of 78, 74 and 75 of COD, TSS and TP, respectively, were achieved by the addition of 500 mg/L Fe2(SO4)3.3H2O and 93, 94 and 96% removal of COD, TSS and TP, respectively, were achieved with the addition of 25 mg/L polyelectrolyte to the coagulation process. The volume of sludge produced, when coagulant was used solely, was higher compared to the use of polyelectrolyte combined with Fe2(SO4)3.3H2O. This may be as a result of non-ionic nature of the polyelectrolyte; hence, it does not chemically react with solids of the wastewater. Coagulation/flocculation may be useful as a pre-treatment process for beverage industrial wastewater prior to biological treatment.  相似文献

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is characterised by its high suspended solids content (SS), high turbidity (NTU), chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration up to 100 gl(-1) and toxic phenolic compounds concentration up to 10 gl(-1). This study examined the effect of a physico-electrochemical method to detoxify olive mill wastewater prior an anaerobic biotreatment process. The proposed pre-treatment process consisted in a preliminary electrocoagulation step in which most phenolic compounds were polymerised, followed by a sedimentation step. The BOD(5)/COD ratio of the electrocoagulated OMW increased from 0.33, initial value, to 0.58. Furthermore, the sedimentation step yielded the removal of 76.2%, 75% and 71% of phenolic compounds, turbidity and suspended solid, respectively, after 3 days of plain settling. The combination of electrocoagulation and sedimentation allowed a COD reduction and decoloration of about 43% and 90%, respectively. This pre-treatment decreases the inhibition of Vibrio fisheri luminescence by 66.4%. Continuous anaerobic biomethanization experiments conducted in parallel with raw OMW and electrocoagulated OMW before and after sedimentation at a loading rate of 6g COD l(-1)day(-1), proved that the final pre-treated OMW was bioconverted into methane at high yield while raw OMW was very toxic to anaerobic microorganisms.  相似文献
