The Architecture of an Integrated Local Network

The DOMAIN system is an architecture for networks of personal workstations and servers which creates an integrated distributed computing environment. Its distinctive features include: a network-wide file system of objects addressed by unique identifiers (UID's); the abstraction of a single level store for transparently accessing all objects, regardless of their location in the network; and a network-wide hierarchical name space. The implementations of these facilities exhibit several interesting approaches to layering the system software. In addition to network transparent data access, interprocess communication is provided as a basis for constructing distributed applications; as a result, we have some experience to guide the choice between these two alternative implementation techniques. Networks utilizing this architecture have been Operational for almost three years; some experience with it and lessons derived from that experience are presented, as are some performance data.

An MADM-based algorithm called IFM is presented on integrated heterogeneous wireless network selection. It aims to maximize the difference among candidate networks in order to obtain weights of each attribute. Compared with the AHP-based algorithm in several aspects, performance evaluation shows that it ensures the accuray of decision making and improves the distance among candidate networks. The changes of the number of attributes and candidate networks have less influence on the attribute objectiveness of weighted values and attribute importance. Ranking abnormality is reduced due to large difference among candidate networks.

Self-Diagnosis and Self-Repair in Memory: An Integrated System Approach

This paper presents an integrated approach to the design of an ultrareliable memory system using a variety of coding and modularization techniques on each of the memory subsystem elements. The overall objective is to provide a properly operating memory system in spite of any single indigenous fault (regardless of the number of failures which might ensue). In other words, the system has the capability automatically to: (1) detect single faults and multiple failures, (2) mask failures to prevent malfunctions, without interrupting service, (3) isolate the fault to a replaceable module, and (4) reconfigure the faulty unit out of the system. The storage medium and retrieval circuits are checked and corrected by coding techniques. Some redundancy is used on the subunits, but the total redundancy is less than 20% of the system cost, and diagnostic software is eliminated.
