What Makes You Think That? The Semantic Web's Proof Layer

In this column, the author raised the conceptual question of the Semantic Web layer cake's proof layer. He believe that provenance knowledge will be increasingly important at this abstraction level - and possibly the key to establishing trust mechanisms and advanced retrieval methods in decentralized applications. Work on Semantic Web provenance issues has started in parallel in different communities in the last decade. However, it's still far from being complete. Understanding provenance knowledge as a first-class citizen of distributed semantic workflows, knowledge bases, and inferencing and retrieval mechanisms will require further convergence of different viewpoints, standardization for seamless interoperability, and possibly new linking and querying methods for user-oriented navigation in the "Web of provenance".

The Smarter Grid

In the US, tens of millions of smart meters, which are vulnerable to remote exploitation, viruses, worms, malicious upgrades, and all manner of other attacks, have been deployed. Attackers can and already have used these meters, on a small scale, to disable the power infrastructure and cause both long-term physical damage to it and harm to the public. These deployments and other related control mechanisms will be expanded in the coming years, as a necessary step toward better energy efficiency and to enable the next generation of electrical systems to integrate into the grid. The question is, how can we make this deployment safe and secure?

MobSens: Making Smart Phones Smarter

In this article, we discuss experiences and lessons learned from deploying four mobile sensing applications on off-the-shelf mobile phones within a recreational framework called MobSens that contains elements of health, social, and environmental sensing at both individual and community levels. We describe the main components of our applications, which facilitate logging and external communications. We also outline the challenges faced when building and testing these applications and describe our strategies for overcoming them.
