Calculation of performance of fire retardant ceiling systems

With equations, Part I describes the thermal behavior of a composite system consisting of a noncombustible ceiling board suspended below a concrete floor slab. Part II shows how the equations have been successfully adapted to digital computer operation. The computed results agree with experimental measurements for two specific systems exposed to a standard test furnace heated at a prescribed rate. A final report on fire tests involving stored plastics

The Factory Mutual Research Corporation has completed a series of fire tests of stored plastics. This paper highlights the major points of the final report. Note: The author presented this paper at the National Fire Protection Association annual meeting held in Chicago, May 1975.     

Glowing connections

This paper gives the results of a series of experiments and how they shed light on problems of electrical fires. Experimental glowing connections were made by allowing wires to make poor contact with another object in series in a circuit. Note: The information in this paper was presented in the course “Electrical fires” at the University of Wisconsin—Extension, Madison, Wisconsin, April 1982.     

Characteristics of invisible particles generated by precombustion and combustion

The author discusses a series of tests designed to study the generation and behavior of submicron-sized particles and gases released by heated materials. Note: This paper was presented at the NFPA annual meeting in St. Louis, Missouri on May 17, 1973.

This paper compares the characteristics of protein and fluoroprotein foams for base injected application to fires in oil storage tanks. Part II discusses the fire tests and their results. Fire and high buildings

The time necessary to evacuate today’s high-rise buildings in a fire emergency is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of the development of untenable smoke conditions. The Division of Building Research has been working on the problem for several years and suggests several approaches to controlling smoke movement in buildings. Two smoke test methods — A comparison of data

Different approaches have been taken in the United States and Great Britain to measure the smoke-producing characteristics of materials in terms of specific optical density. An investigation has been conducted to determine if a correlation exists between the methods. Extinction of fires by halogenated compounds — A suggested mechanism

The author suggests the halogenated compounds extinguish diffusion flames by promoting recombination of reactive oxygen atoms to form less reactive molecular oxygen; and he discusses data that tend to support his suggestion. Calculation of response time of ceiling-mounted fire detectors

An understanding of the behavior of the fire plume and fire-induced flow near the ceiling of a room is necessary if one is to optimize detector response time and placement. Carbon dioxide system design analysis by computer

Encouraged by the successful application of the computer to calculating sprinkler systems, 3M undertook a similar project for carbon dioxide systems.
