This article describes the synthesis of poly(ω‐lauryl lactam) by a reactive extrusion process. Anionic ring‐opening polymerization was performed in an intermeshing corotating twin‐screw extruder. We investigated the evolution of conversion of ω‐lauryl lactam as a function of reaction time, screw speeds, different feed rates, and different screw configurations along the screw axis in a twin‐screw extruder. For comparison with continuous polymerization in a twin‐screw extruder, we studied polymerization in an internal mixer, which was considered a batch reactor. We found the final conversion of ω‐lauryl lactam made in a twin‐screw extruder was higher than in an internal mixer. Higher molecular weights are found at lower screw speeds and feed rates. Melt viscosities and mechanical properties of the polymers were measured. Residence time, molecular weights, and shear mixing have the main effect on the mechanical properties of products. The twin‐screw extruder performance was interpreted in terms of commercial software. It was found that twin‐screw extruder reaction rate was higher than those in the batch reactor and increased locally with screw speed and feed rate. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Intermeshing twin‐screw extruders have been recently identified as useful in special application niches such as the extrusion of PVC dry blends (counter‐rotating machines) and compounding operations (co‐rotating machines). Thus, it is of interest to study the mechanical and/or chemical effects that occur along the screw axis of the extruders, since they will dictate the characteristics and performance of the final material. This work aims at illustrating the usefulness of a simple experimental tool recently developed for the study of the physical, chemical and morphological evolution along the extruder of polymer based systems, data being presented and discussed for a number of composites and blends. 相似文献

The classic polymerization technology of polystyrene is a high‐cost and nonfriendly environmental technology. Furthermore, the weight‐average molecular weight of polystyrene is hard to enhance up to 400,000 in the classic polymerization technology. The disadvantages limit the growth rate of polystyrene. The solution for increasing the growth rate of polystyrene lies in new technology. The reactive extrusion process of polystyrene was studied in detail and the whole reactive extrusion process of polystyrene was obtained. By means of controlling the flow rate of styrene and the initiator and the screw rotational speed, samples of polystyrene with different molecular weights were synthesized by the twin‐screw extruder. The properties of synthesized polystyrene with different molecular weights were studied; the mechanic properties of polystyrene will increase with an increase of the weight average molecular weight of polystyrene. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
