Employing a functionally graded adhesive the efficiency of adhesively bonded lap joints can be improved significantly. However, up to now, analysis approaches for planar functionally graded adhesive joints are still not addressed well. With this work, an efficient model for the stress analysis of functionally graded adhesive single lap joints which considers peel as well as shear stresses in the adhesive is proposed. Two differential equations of the displacements are derived for the case of an axially loaded adhesive single lap joint. The differential equations are solved using a power series approach. The model incorporates the nonlinear geometric characteristics of a single lap joint under tensile loading and allows for the analysis of various adhesive Young׳s modulus variations. The obtained stress distributions are compared to results of detailed Finite Element analyses and show a good agreement for several single lap joint configurations. In addition, different adhesive Young׳s modulus distributions and their impact on the peel and shear stresses as well as the influence of the adhesive thickness are studied and discussed in detail.  相似文献

This research investigates the use of a meshless smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method for the prediction of failure in an adhesively bonded single lap joint. A number of issues concerning the SPH based finite element modelling of single lap joints are discussed. The predicted stresses of the SPH finite element model are compared with the results of a cohesive zone based finite element model. Crack initiation and crack propagation in the adhesive layer are also studied. The results show that the peel stresses predicted by the SPH finite element model are higher and the shear stresses are lower than those predicted by the cohesive zone finite element model. The crack initiation and propagation response of the two models is similar, however, the SPH finite element model predicted a lower failure load than the cohesive zone finite element model. It is concluded that the current implementation of SPH method is a promising method for modelling cohesive failure in bonded joins but requires further development to allow for interfacial crack growth and better stress prediction under tensile loading to compete with existing methods.  相似文献

The single lap joint is the most used test in order to analyse the behaviour of an adhesive in an assembly as on one hand, the manufacturing of such specimens is quite easy, and on the other hand they require only a classic tensile testing machine. However, such specimens are associated with complex loading of the adhesive, i.e. non-uniform shear stress along the overlap length, quite large peel stress at the two ends of the overlap and significant edge effects associated with geometrical and material parameters. In addition, the stress concentrations can contribute to fracture initiation in the adhesive joints and thus can lead to an incorrect analysis of the adhesive behaviour. Therefore, understanding the stress distribution in an adhesive joint can lead to improvements in adhesively bonded assemblies. The first part of this paper presents the influence of edge effects on the stress concentrations in single lap joints under elastic assumption of the material and using a pressure-dependent elastic limit of the adhesive. In the second part, some usual geometries, proposed in the literature about stress limitation, are compared with respect to the maximum load transmitted by single lap joint. The last part presents some geometries, which significantly limit the influence of edge effects and are more appropriate for analysing the behaviour of the adhesive.  相似文献

In this paper it is proposed a phenomenological framework to perform the failure analysis of a family of adhesive single lap joints. The theory is conceived for adhesives with quasi-brittle behaviour and highly resistant adherends. The main goal is to predict the rupture force using model equations that combine enough mathematical simplicity to allow their usage in engineering problems with the capability of describing a complex nonlinear mechanical behaviour. The material constants that appear in the model equations are identified for an adhesive/adherend system consisting of ASTM A36 steel plates bonded with an epoxy/ceramic composite. Results from experimental tensile testing of joints with different bonded areas were compared with model prediction showing a good correlation.  相似文献

In order to improve the tensile lap shear strength of adhesively bonded joints, nano-particles were dispersed in the adhesive using a 3-roll mill. The dispersion states of nano-particles in the epoxy adhesive were observed with TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) with respect to the mixing conditions, and the effect of nano-particles on the mechanical properties of the adhesive was measured with respect to dispersion state and weight content of nano-particles. Also the static tensile load capability of the adhesively bonded double lap joints composed of uni-directional glass/epoxy composite and nano-particle-reinforced epoxy adhesive was investigated to assess the effect of nano-particles on the lap shear strength of the joint. From the experimental and FE analysis results, it was found that the nano-particles in the adhesive improved the mechanical properties of the adhesive. Also the increased failure strain and the reduced CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) of the nano-particle-reinforced adhesive improved the lap shear strength of adhesively bonded joints.  相似文献

The aim of this research is to study the influence of moisture absorption at low moisture contents on the creep behaviour of an epoxy adhesive in steel bonded joints. Single lap joints were manufactured using high strength steel adherends and a two-component epoxy adhesive. The single lap joints were tested at load levels corresponding to average lap shear stresses of ± 5%, 15%, 30% and 45% of the dry lap shear strength in both 40 °C air and 40 °C distilled water. Specimens were not pre-aged to be able to analyse the coupled effect of moisture and loading. The test results show that an increase in the load level resulted in an increase in the instantaneous strain and in the creep strain rate. The creep strain of single lap joints loaded in water was generally larger than for the ones loaded in air. For joints loaded in water the creep behaviour was found to be dependent on the moisture concentration in the adhesive. At low moisture percentages creep was suppressed, resulting in a lower instantaneous strain. At higher moisture percentages creep was promoted, resulting in a larger strain rate. The suppression of creep at low moisture percentages is attributed to water molecules bonding to the epoxy macromolecules, resulting in a reduction in molecular mobility and a smaller creep strain. At higher moisture percentages the plasticizing effect of the water dominates, resulting in a larger creep strain. The Maxwell three-element solid model and Kelvin-Voigt three-element solid model were used to simulate the creep behaviour of the single lap joints loaded in air and water. The models gave good representations of the creep response across the different load levels in both water and air, they were however unable to give a correct representation of the instantaneous strain of the single lap joints loaded in water. This is attributed to the models being unable to account for the present short-term relaxation process that is dependent on the moisture concentration.  相似文献

Pre-preg and non-crimp-fabric composite single lap bonded joints were manufactured and investigated to characterise the bond quality and static failure behaviour. A two-part epoxy adhesive was employed to bond composite laminates. The composite panels, which were treated with low pressure oxygen plasma, were bonded in a hot drape former and then cut to manufacture single lap bonded joints. The joints were examined using X-ray microtomography to evaluate the bond quality achieved in the hot drape former. Quasi-static tensile tests were conducted on the pre-preg and non-crimp-fabric composite single lap bonded joints. The fracture surfaces were examined using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The static failure behaviour and failure patterns observed in the two joint types were compared and discussed.  相似文献

The use of adhesive bonding for high temperature applications is becoming more challenging because of low thermal and mechanical properties of commercially available adhesives. However, the development of high performance polymers can overcome the problem of using adhesive bonding at high temperature. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) is one such recently emerged high performance polymer with excellent thermal and mechanical properties. It has a tensile strength of 160 MPa and a glass transition of 425 °C. Currently, PBI is available in solution form with only 26% concentration in Dimethyl-acetamide solvent. Due to high solvent contents, the process optimization required lot of efforts to form PBI adhesive bonded joints with considerable lap shear strength. Therefore, in present work, efforts are devoted to optimize the adhesive bonding process of PBI in order to make its application possible as an adhesive for high temperature applications. Bonding process was optimized using different curing time and temperatures. Epoxy based carbon fiber composite bonded joints were successfully formed with single lap shear strength of 21 Mpa. PBI adhesive bonded joints were also formed after performing the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment of composite substrate. Plasma treatment has further improved the lap shear strength of bonded joints from 21 MPa to 30 MPa. Atmospheric pressure plasma treatment has also changed the mode of failure of composite bonded joints.  相似文献

Adhesively bonded metal laminates are used in aerospace applications to achieve low cost, light weight structures in the aerospace industry. Advanced structural adhesives are used to bond metal laminae to manufacture laminates, and to bond stringers to metal laminate skins. Understanding the failure behaviour of such bonded structures is important in order to provide optimal aircraft designs. In this paper, the static failure behaviour of adhesively bonded metal laminate joints is presented. A cohesive zone model was developed to predict their static failure behaviour. A traction–separation response was used for the adhesive material. Three joint configurations were considered: a doubler in bending, a doubler in tension and a laminated single lap. The backface strains and static failure loads obtained from experimental tests were used to validate the results from finite element modelling. The models were found to be in good agreement with experiments.  相似文献

Calculated torque transmission capability of adhesively bonded tubular lap joints using linear elastic material properties is usually much less than the experimentally-determined one because the majority of the load transfer of the adhesively bonded joints is accomplished by the nonlinear behavior of rubber-toughened epoxy adhesives.

Although the adhesively bonded tubular double lap joint has better torque transmission capability and reliability than the single lap joint, the nonlinear analytic or numerical analysis for the adhesively bonded tubular double lap joint has not been performed because of numerical complications.

An iterative solution that includes the nonlinear shear behavior of the adhesive was derived using the analytic solution. Since the iterative solution can be obtained very quickly due to the simplicity of the algorithm, it is an attractive method of designing adhesively bonded tubular single and double lap joints.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted on the strength of adhesively bonded steel joints, prepared epoxy and acrylic adhesives. At first, to obtain strength characteristics of these adhesives under uniform stress distributions in the adhesive layer, tensile tests for butt, scarf and torsional test for butt joints with thin-wall tube were conducted. Based on the above strength data, the fracture envelope in the normal stress-shear stress plane for the acrylic adhesive was compared with that for the epoxy adhesive. Furthermore, for the epoxy and acrylic adhesives, the effect of stress triaxiality parameter on the failure stress was also investigated. From those comparison, it was found that the effect of stress tri-axiality in the adhesive layer on the joint strength with the epoxy adhesive differed from that with the acrylic adhesive. Fracture toughness tests were then conducted under mode l loading using double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens with the epoxy and acrylic adhesives. The results of the fracture toughness tests revealed continuous crack propagation for the acrylic adhesive, whereas stick-slip type propagation for the epoxy one. Finally, lap shear tests were conducted using lap joints bonded by the epoxy and acrylic adhesives with several lap lengths. The results of the lap shear tests indicated that the shear strength with the epoxy adhesive rapidly decreases with increasing lap length, whereas the shear strength with the acrylic adhesive decreases gently with increasing the lap length.  相似文献

One parameter that influences adhesively bonded joints performance is the adherend material and its effect should be taken into consideration in the design of adhesive joints. In this work, the effect of material on the mechanical behaviour of adhesive joints was investigated experimentally and numerically by single lap joints (SLJs) with different adherend materials (high strength steel, low strength steel and composite). The adhesives selected were two new modern tough structural adhesives used in the automotive industry. It was found that, for relatively short overlaps in SLJs bonded with structural modern tough adhesives, failure is dominated by adhesive global yielding and the influence of material on joint strength is not significant. For larger overlaps, the failure is not anymore due to global yielding and the effect of material becomes more important. Moreover, it was possible to evaluate which adhesive is more suited for each material.  相似文献

In this research, Araldite 2011 has been reinforced using different weight fractions of Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analyses were conducted and it has been shown that introduction of the RGO greatly changes the film morphology of the neat adhesive. Uni-axial tests were carried out to obtain the mechanical characteristics of the adhesive-RGO composites. It has been observed that introducing 0.5 wt% RGO enhances the ultimate tensile strength of the composites by 30%. In addition, single lap joints using neat adhesive and adhesive-RGO composites were fabricated to investigate the effect of the added RGO on the lap shear strength of the joints. Results show that the joints with added 0.5 wt RGO exhibited 27% higher lap shear strength compared to the joints bonded with neat adhesive. Finally, Finite Element (FE) numerical solutions using Cohesive Zone Modeling (CZM) have been carried out to simulate the failure behavior of the joints, and it has been shown that the FE models can predict the joint’s failure load.  相似文献

Adhesively bonded composite single lap joints were experimentally investigated to analyze the bondline stress concentrations and characterize the influence of adhesive ductility on the joint strength. Two epoxy paste adhesives—one with high tensile strength and low ductility, and the other with relatively low tensile strength and high ductility—were used to manufacture composite single lap joints. Quasi-static tensile tests were conducted on the single lap joints to failure at room temperature. High magnification two-dimensional digital image correlation was used to analyze strain distributions near the adhesive fillet regions. The failure mechanisms were examined using scanning electron microscopy to understand the effect of adhesive ductility on the joint strength. For a given surface treatment and laminate type, the results show that adhesive ductility significantly increases the joint strength by positively influencing stress distribution and failure mechanism near the overlap edges. Moreover, it is shown that high magnification two-dimensional digital image correlation can successfully be used to study the damage initiation phase in composite bonded joints.  相似文献

Nowadays, the use of adhesive and adhesively bonded joints have been considerably appreciated in the industry due to the dramatic reduction in bonding strength, reduced stress concentration, rust prevention, uniform bonding of the bonding surface and a significant reduction in costs compared to other types of permanent joints such as welding. In this study, the effect of adhesive thickness on creep behaviour of a single lap adhesive joint with the aid of Abaqus FEM software is investigated. It should be noted that the two-layer and two-dimensional models are considered, in which their adhesive layer is made of a reinforced epoxy resin with 0.5% carbon fiber and the adherend layers are made of carbon steel plates, which is affected by tensile forces. Since the main purpose of this paper is to study the effect of adhesive thickness on the adhesive joints behaviour, the effects of the distribution of shear stress, effective stress and creep strain were studied in different thicknesses of the adhesive layer. The results show that by increasing the thickness, the stress and the creep strain decrease, and over time, the stress decreases and the creep behaviour of adhesives increases.  相似文献

An experimental–computational fracture-mechanics approach for the analysis and design of structural adhesive joints under static loading is demonstrated by predicting the ultimate fracture load of cracked lap shear and single lap shear aluminum and steel joints bonded using a highly toughened epoxy adhesive. The predictions are then compared with measured values. The effects of spew fillet, adhesive thickness, and surface roughness on the quasi-static strength of the joints are also discussed. This fracture-mechanics approach is extended to characterize the fatigue threshold and crack growth behavior of a toughened epoxy adhesive system for design purposes. The effects of the mode ratio of loading, adhesive thickness, substrate modulus, spew fillet, and surface roughness on the fatigue threshold and crack growth rates are considered. A finite element model is developed to both explain the experimental results and to predict how a change in an adhesive system affects the fatigue performance of the bonded joint.  相似文献

Better fatigue performance of adhesively bonded joints makes them suitable for most structural applications. However, predicting the service life of bonded joints accurately remains a challenge. In this present study, nonlinear computational simulations have been performed on adhesively bonded single lap ASTM-D1002 shear joint considering both geometrical and material nonlinearities to predict the fatigue life by judiciously applying the modified Coffin-Manson equation for adhesive joints. Elasto-plastic material models have been employed for both the adhesive and the adherends. The predicted life has close agreement in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) regime with empirical observations reported in the literature.  相似文献

The tensile performance of adhesively bonded CFRP scarf-lap joints was investigated experimentally and numerically. In this study, scarf angle and adherend thickness were chosen as design parameters. The lap shear strength is not directly proportional to scarf angle and adherend thickness for the brittle adhesive studied in the paper. The major failure mode includes cohesive shear failure and adherend delamination failure. The results present a stepped failure morphology along the bondline in the adhesive layer. A finite element model based on cohesive zone model was established to further investigate the stress distribution of scarf-lap joints with different lap parameters. The numerical results were compared with the experiment results, showing a good agreement, thus verifying the validity of the established numerical model.  相似文献

Adhesively bonded joints are widely used in a variety of industrial and engineering activities. Their overall strength is dependent on the properties of the adhesives. In the present research, assessments of adhesive properties were performed systematically through defining both strength mixity and energy rate mixity and using them to characterize the overall strength of metallic single lap joints. By means of the cohesive zone model, the adhesive strength mixity was defined as the ratio of the shear and tensile separation strength, and the energy rate mixity was defined as the ratio of the area below the shear cohesive curve and the area below the tensile cohesive curve. For each specified group of mixity parameters, corresponding to the properties of a specified adhesive, the overall strengths and the critical displacements of bonded joints were characterized. A series of strength and energy rate mixities were taken into account in the present calculations. A comparison of the present calculations with some existing experiments was carried out for both brittle and ductile adhesives. Finally, in the calculations presented here, damage initiation and evolution of the adhesive layer were also undertaken. The results showed that the overall strength of the joints was significantly depended on the adhesive properties, which were characterized by the strength and energy rate mixities of the adhesive. Furthermore, the shear adhesive stress components played a dominate role in both the damage initiation and evolution in the adhesives, which were also affected by the overlap length of the joints.  相似文献
