This paper reports a novel launch scheme for coupling light into the skew rays of a graded index fiber. This is accomplished by utilizing a diffractive optical element in conjunction with a single mode fiber to mode match a graded index fiber. Results are used to confirm the fact that the element does improve the coupling into the skew rays of graded index fiber. This approach offers an alternative to existing methods based on tilting and angular offsets for the conditioned launch problem  相似文献

Initially, an attempt is made to show that previous formulations of the problem of nonorthogonal-mode coupling in tapered structures are incomplete. The novel waveguide structures described in this paper have nonlinearly tapered shapes that result in low radiation losses despite their relatively short lengths. The core at the waveguide endface connected with the fiber has a very small cross section and an expanded mode field with a non-Gaussian shape. The taper structures are analyzed by using an improved step-transition method. This method is a based on the theory of enclosing a waveguide within electrical walls and that can therefore treat the radiation modes in a tapered waveguide as discrete mode spectra. Analyzing the relationships between the lengths and shapes of the tapers and the radiation loss due to the tapers show that appropriately tapered semiconductor waveguides operating at an optical wavelength of 1.55 μm and having a taper length of less than 0.7 mm can have a radiation loss of only 0.1 dB and a coupling loss with a conventional single-mode fiber of less than 0.5 dB  相似文献

The optical modes interfering constructively and destructively in the tapered output section of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer are measured and calculated. Rib-waveguides consisting of silicon oxide cladding layers and an oxynitride waveguide are employed. The measurements and the calculations show that, for destructive interference, the optical intensity runs under a small angle away from the rib-waveguide in the oxynitride layer  相似文献

Optical coupling characteristics between one uniform waveguide and one tapered waveguide are discussed. This coupling structure is analyzed by utilizing coupled-mode theory and system step approximation. Based on numerical investigation, various coupling characteristics are presented. It is shown that the proposed structure can be used as a waveguide-type optical power divider by selecting an appropriate taper slope for the tapered waveguide or by separating the coupled waveguides properly for a desired power-dividing ratio  相似文献

Optical wavelength filters based on tapered directional couplers are analyzed by nonorthogonal coupled-mode theory. The nonorthogonal coupled-mode formulation in general yields more accurate results than the conventional orthogonal coupled-mode theory. The focus is on the novel features of the tapered couplers used as wavelength filters. It is demonstrated that, in addition to reducing the crosstalk and suppressing the sidelobes, the tapered structure can also make the filtering response independent of the device length beyond a critical coupling length,.<>  相似文献

We study adiabatic mode propagation in tapered air-silica microstructured optical fibers and demonstrate efficient coupling into a robust high-delta microstructured fiber. In the waist region of the taper, the core mode is tightly confined by the air holes and exhibits properties similar to a high-delta waveguide such as enhanced peak intensity and widely flattened anomalous dispersion. We exploit these properties to generate tunable self-frequency shifting Raman solitons over the communications window from 1.3 μm to 1.65 μm, with over 60% conversion efficiency These fiber devices are practical for several reasons: they can be fusion spliced to standard single-mode fibers with relatively low loss, they are mechanically strong, due to the supporting cladding, and because the mode is isolated from the surrounding air interface, they can potentially be recoated allowing for packaging  相似文献

A passive InP/InGaAsP spot-size transformer for low-loss coupling of semiconductor optoelectronic devices to single-mode fibres has been fabricated entirely on InP. Using a buried two-layer laterally tapered section, spot-size transformation is demonstrated from below 2 mu m up to 8 mu m, the spot size of a dispersion-shifted fibre at 1550 nm. For a chip without antireflection coating a total insertion loss of 2.7 dB was achieved at a taper length of approximately 600 mu m.<>  相似文献

For most applications, a quasi-digital switching response is desired. The authors report on the design and fabrication of a 2×2 `digital' optical switch in GaInAsP/InP based on a directional coupler with both tapered velocity and tapered coupling and designed to be in the cross state at the zero bias condition. Complete power transfer to the cross output port for both TE and TM polarizations has been realized in the passive couplers for a wide range of device lengths proving the theoretically predicted fabrication tolerances. Low-loss coupling between semiconductor photonic devices and single-mode fibers is achieved using a simple InP/InGaAsP tapered waveguide. The proposed simple structure has a small and nearly square guiding core at its output facet. In this structure, the output field has a non-Gaussian profile, but low-pass filter coupling can be achieved by optimizing the design of the guiding core sizes. The waveguide is composed of a laterally tapered InGaAsP guiding layer and an InP cladding region on an InP substrate, facilitating integration of the waveguide with active devices using conventional processes. The waveguide is shown to have a total insertion loss of 2.6 dB, including a coupling loss of 0.9 dB and large ±2.5-μm misalignment tolerance in lateral and vertical directions with single-mode filters  相似文献

Next-generation optical-communications systems require on-wafer integration of active and passive opto-electronic components to increase operating speed and reduce packaging costs. Increased coupling efficiencies between semiconductor waveguides and optical fibers are of particular interest. A simple and cost-effective method of fabricating a mode-size converter monolithically integrated with a semiconductor waveguide is presented. An on-wafer mode-size converter reduces the number of interfaces in an opto-electronic circuit and improves the coupling efficiency between semiconductor waveguide and optical fiber. Vertically tapered epilayers are deposited in a single epitaxial growth run using shadow-masked growth by chemical-beam epitaxy, avoiding complex and expensive processing and regrowth stages. Waveguides that taper vertically and horizontally over /spl sim/1 mm for gradual expansion of the mode size are demonstrated. Waveguide loss measurements showed that there was negligible loss across the tapered regions. A loss of <2 dB/interface was achieved compared with /spl sim/8 dB/interface for a butt-coupled discrete device.  相似文献

The light from a semiconductor laser is coupled efficiently into a tapered hemispherical-end optical fiber obtained by drawing in an arc discharge. The maximum coupling efficiency of 83 percent is achieved for the graded index fiber having a 60-µm core diameter. Permissible transverse displacement for a 1-dB decrease of coupling is about 19 µm.  相似文献

A lenslike glass fiber guide with a parabolic variation of refractive index has been developed. This optical guide named SELFOC® has the following characteristics: simultaneous transmission of laser beams modulated by wide-band signals through narrow space; optical image transmission; realization of a lens with tiny aperture or with extremely short focal length; and the possibility of being bent with a small radius of curvature without spoiling transmission characteristics. In the case of a typical fiber guide with length 1 meter and diameter 0.3 mm, transmission loss is about 0.2 dB and depolarization is about 20 dB at wavelength 0.63μ. The mode pattern of a laser beam after passing through the fiber guide is scarcely deformed. The fiber guide can be used as a transmission line or lens, in optical communication, optical data processing, and optical instruments.  相似文献
