Solar photovoltaic-thermal (PV/T) collectors, are hybrid collectors used to convert solar radiation into usable thermal and electrical energy. Recently, the field of research on PV/T is has focused on improving the efficiency of the PV/T collector by replacing the conventional heat transfer fluids (HTFs) with nanofluids. This article investigates the effect of hybrid nanofluids mixture ratio on the useful energy and overall efficiency of a PV/T collector operating with Al2O3-ZnO water nanofluid as the HTF. Experiments to measure the thermophysical properties of the hybrid nanofluids were conducted for various temperatures, volume concentrations, and mixture ratios, furthermore, accurate correlation models were proposed. Metrological data and energy output readings collected from the PV solar farm at Cyprus International University were used to validate our model. The study observed that at the optimum mixture ratio (0.47 of Al2O3 in the hybrid), the electrical, thermal, and exergy efficiencies of the PV/T collector are 13.8%, 55.9%, and 15.13% respectively. Also, the cell temperature drops by 21% when the mass flow rate is 0.1 kg/s as compared to when it is 0.01 kg/s. Finally, the study concludes that by using the Al2O3-ZnO hybrid nanofluid an overall peak thermal efficiency of 91% can be attained, and this represents a 34% enhancement in the collector's performance when compared to water.  相似文献

In this study an experimental investigation has been carried out to analyze the laminar forced convection of Al2O3/water and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)/water nanofluids through uniformly heated horizontal circular pipe with helical twisted tape inserts. Tests were conducted for varied range of nanoparticle volume concentration (0.15%, 0.45%, 0.60%, and 1%) and helical tape inserts of twist ratios of 1.5, 2.5, and 3. The heat transfer enhancement and the increase of friction factor of nanofluids with helical inserts are compared with that of pure water results with plain tube without inserts. The Nusselt number is found to increase with the increase in Peclet number and nanofluid concentration. The MWCNT/water nanofluids with helical screw tape inserts exhibits higher thermal performance compared to Al2O3/water nanofluid. The maximum thermal performance factor was found to be 1.79 and 1.99 for Al2O3/water and MWCNT/water nanofluids with helical twisted tape inserts, respectively. The pressure drop for Al2O3 nanofluid is found to be higher compared to the MWCNT nanofluid for all the twist ratio of helical screw tape inserts.  相似文献

This study aims to evaluate the thermal performance and friction factor characteristics of the U-shaped serpentine microchannel heat sink using three different nanofluids. Two distinct nanoparticles, namely Al2O3 (alumina) and CuO (copper oxide), were used for the preparation of nanofluids using water and ethylene glycol (EG) as base fluids. Three nanofluids, namely nanofluid I (Al2O3 + water), nanofluid II (CuO + water), and nanofluid III (CuO + EG), have been prepared. The results showed that the thermal conductivity of nanofluids was increased for all concentrations (from 0.01 to 0.3%), compared with base fluids. The theoretical values derived from the relationship between the Darcy friction factor showed a clear understanding of the fully developed laminar flow. Thermal resistance for nanofluid III was lower than other nanofluids, resulting in a higher cooling efficiency. The nanofluid mechanism and the geometry of the U-shaped serpentine heat sink have led to the improvement in the thermal performance of electronic cooling systems.  相似文献

The effective thermal conductivity of Al2O3/water and CuO/water nanofluids were modeled by numerically solving steady heat flow in one-dimensional microchannels. This was accomplished by using energy conserving dissipative particle dynamics (DPDe).The effects of the interfacial thermal resistance and the Brownian motion of nanoparticles were incorporated in the model by modifying the conductive interaction parameter in the energy equation. The results were presented in the form of the thermal conductivity of nanofluids as functions of particle volume fraction and temperature, and were compared with the available experimental and analytical results. The present model agreed well with the experimental results for Al2O3/water nanofluid, whilethere were discrepancies between the model and the results for CuO/water nanofluid.  相似文献

In this study the photovoltaic hybrid thermal system has been fabricated for an effective increase in production of electric output. Further the PV/T system also designed to produce the hydrogen from the water through electrolysis process. Several studies reported drastic reduction in the electric output due to high cell temperatures. Nevertheless, these effects are reduced by introduction of the nanoparticles. This study also examines the nanofluids MWCNT and Fe2O3 as the passive cooling agent for higher electric output production without any major energy loss. The nanoparticles are dispersed in the water at the optimum fashions to increase the thermal and electrical efficiency of the system. Both MWCNT and Fe2O3 nanofluids were passed to the hybrid system at the flow rate of 0.0075 kg/s and 0.01 kg/s. The highest electrical output and thermal efficiency has been obtained at 12.30 P.M. With regard to the production of hydrogen, the maximum productions were observed from 12.15 P.M. to 13.00 P.M.. Implementation of this method compensates the energy loss with superior electrical output compared to previous conventional method. By compelling the results, 0.01 kg/s subjected to be efficient on the electricity production and the hydrogen generation. Further, employing the electrolyzer as the attached to the hybrid system produces the hydrogen, which can be stored for future use as the promising source of energy.  相似文献

Thermal conductivity of ethylene glycol and water mixture based Al2O3 and CuO nanofluids has been estimated experimentally at different volume concentrations and temperatures. The base fluid is a mixture of 50:50% (by weight) of ethylene glycol and water (EG/W). The particle concentration up to 0.8% and temperature range from 15 °C–50 °C were considered. Both the nanofluids are exhibiting higher thermal conductivity compared to base fluid. Under same volume concentration and temperature, CuO nanofluid thermal conductivity is more compared to Al2O3 nanofluid. A new correlation was developed based on the experimental data for the estimation of thermal conductivity of both the nanofluids.  相似文献

One of the main problems that limit the extensive use of photovoltaic (PV) systems is the increase in the temperature of PV panels. Overheating of a PV module decreases the performance of the output power by 0.4% to 0.5% per 1°C over its rated temperature that in most cases is 25°C. An effective way of improving electrical performance (power output and efficiency) and reducing the rate of thermal degradation of a PV module is to reduce the operating temperature of the PV surface by a cooling medium. To achieve this, nanofluids can be considered as a potentially effective solution for cooling. In this study, two types of nanofluids, namely Al2O3 and TiO2 water‐based mixture of different volume flow rates and concentrations (0.01%, 0.05%, and 0.1%) by weight, were used. Also, three PV panels were cooled simultaneously using nanofluids, water, and natural air, respectively. Results showed that nanofluids for cooling enhanced heat transfer rate much better than water and natural air. Best results were achieved for TiO2 nanofluids at the considered concentration (0.1 wt%). Nanofluid cooling of turbulent flows for such an application has not been investigated before. These results represent the first application of nanofluid cooling in the turbulent flow regimes and in outdoor conditions including real solar irradiation.  相似文献

This study deals with the theoretical enhancement of thermal performance using water‐based (50/50) volume fraction of Fe2O3, CuO, TiO2, Ag, Cu in Al2O3 hybrid nanofluids as coolants for a louvered fin automobile radiator. The effects on thermophysical properties and various performance parameters, i.e., heat transfer, effectiveness, and pumping power of hybrid nanofluids have been compared with water. Among all studied hybrid nanofluids, Al2O3‐Ag/water hybrid nanofluid has higher effectiveness, heat transfer rate, pumping power, and pressure drop of 0.8%, 3%, 6%, and 5.6%, respectively, as compared to water and is followed by (50/50) volume fraction of Cu, CuO, Fe2O3, TiO2 hybrid nanofluids as radiator coolant. For the same radiator size and heat transfer rate, coolant flow rate and pumping work decreases by 3%, 4%, respectively, for Al2O3‐Ag/water hybrid nanofluid and for the same coolant flow rate and heat transfer rate the radiator size decreases by 3% and pumping power increases by 3.4% for Al2O3‐Ag/water hybrid nanofluid as compared to water. Reduction in radiator size may lead to a reduction in radiator cost, engine fuel consumption, and environmental benefit.  相似文献

The performance of hydronic finned-tube heating units with nanofluids is compared to their performance with a conventional heat transfer fluid comprised of 60% ethylene glycol and 40% water, by mass (60% EG) using a mathematical model. The nanofluids modeled are comprised of either CuO or Al2O3 nanoparticles dispersed in the 60% EG solution. The finned tube configuration modeled is similar to that commonly found in building heating systems. The model employs correlations for nanoparticle thermophysical properties and heat transfer that have been previously documented in the literature. The analyses indicate that finned tube heating performance is enhanced by employing nanofluids as a heat transfer medium. The model predicts an 11.6% increase in finned-tube heating output under certain conditions with the 4% Al2O3/60% EG nanofluid and an 8.7% increase with the 4% CuO/60% EG nanofluid compared to heating output with the base fluid. The model predicts that pumping power required for a given heating output with a given finned tube geometry is reduced with both the Al2O3/60% EG and the CuO/60% EG nanofluids compared to the base fluid. The finned tube with 4% Al2O3/60% EG has the lowest liquid pumping power at a given heating output of all the fluids modeled.  相似文献

The present paper is a comparison between heat transfer characteristics of Al2O3/water and CuO/water nanofluids through a square cross-section cupric duct in laminar flow under uniform heat flux. Sometimes because of pressure drop limitations the need for noncircular ducts arises in many heat transfer applications, and a testing facility has been constructed for this purpose and experimental studies were performed on both nanofluids under different nanoparticles concentrations in distilled water as a base fluid. The results indicate that a considerable heat transfer enhancement has been achieved by both nanofluids compared with base fluid. However, CuO/water nanofluid shows better heat transfer augmentation compared with Al2O3/water nanofluid through square cross-section duct.  相似文献

The present study was aimed to utilize low‐cost alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles for improving the heat transfer behavior in an intercooler of two‐stage air compressor. Experimental investigation was carried out with three different volume concentrations of 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0% Al2O3/water nanofluids to assess the performance of the intercooler, that is, counterflow heat exchanger at different loads. Thermal properties such as thermal conductivity and overall heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid increased substantially with increasing concentration of Al2O3 nanoparticles. Specific heat capacity of nanofluids were lower than base water. The intercooler performance parameters such as effectiveness and efficiency improved appreciably with the employment of nanofluid. The efficiency increased by about 6.1% with maximum concentration of nanofluid, that is, 1% at 3‐bar compressor load. It is concluded from the study that high concentration of Al2O3 nanoparticles dispersion in water would offer better heat transfer performance of the intercooler.  相似文献

Nanofluids with high thermal conductivity coefficient are introduced to the thermal management system of power battery packs for electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. Two typical cooling structures of cylindrical and square battery packs are described, and their flow models are established. By similarity transformations, the nonlinear system of partial differential equations is reduced and then solved numerically by the shooting method. The heat transfer properties of three types of nanofluids, that is, CuO‐EG, Al2O3‐EG, TiO2‐EG, are analyzed in detail. It is found that CuO‐EG nanofluid is the best coolant for the cylindrical battery pack, whereas Al2O3‐EG nanofluid is the best choice for square battery pack cooling.  相似文献

Thermal conductivity and viscosity analysis of Al2O 3/CuO (50/50) hybrid nanofluid in various mass fractions of ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG) binary base fluid have been investigated in the present work. Hybrid nanofluid with vol. fraction range limited to 1.5% and within the higher temperature range of 50°C to 70°C is considered for thermal conductivity and viscosity analysis. Impact on viscosity and conductivity models with various shape nanoparticles, i.e, spherical, cylindrical, brick, platelets, and blades have been discussed and were compared in EG and PG binary base fluids. Also, the analysis extends to the prediction for the stability with zeta potential and synthesis of spherical shape Al2O3/CuO hybrid nanofluid with X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The theoretical analysis revealed that thermal conductivity of Al2O3/CuO hybrid nanofluid in EG binary base fluid is lower compared to in PG binary base fluid. The thermal conductivity is observed to be higher in spherical and cylindrical shape nanoparticle compared to bricks, blades, and platelets shape nanoparticles. Optimum viscosity of Al2O3/CuO hybrid nanofluid is observed at 50%EG and 30%PG of the binary base fluid. Hybrid nanofluid in 30% of PG as binary base fluid results 16.2% higher dynamic viscosity compared to pure PG base fluid for a volume concentration of 2%. Zeta potential measurement results in the stability of spherical Al2O3‐CuO/ (50/50) EG/W hybrid nanofluid, and it may be considered as a heat transfer fluid.  相似文献

In this study, Shell and tube heat exchanger (STHX) with 22% cut segmental baffles and helical baffles with 20°, 30°, 40° inclination angles are considered for three-dimensional CFD analysis using the ANSYS FLUENT tool to investigate the performance of STHX. OHTC and comprehensive performance index are higher for 40° helical baffles when compared to segmental baffle and 20°, 30° helical baffle heat exchangers with water as working fluid. Hence, further investigations are carried out for 40° helical baffle heat exchangers. Numerical investigations are extended with nanofluids (Al2O3, CuO, and SiO2) at 1%, 3%, and 5% volume concentrations for each nanofluid. Under the same mass flow rates, 40° helical baffles with Al2O3 nanofluid as working fluid provided better heat transfer rates when compared to the other two nanofluids and base fluid. Also, the authors noticed that the 5% volume (vol) concentration nanofluids provided better heat transfer enhancements when compared to 1%, 3% volume concentrations, and base fluid. Enhancements (10.33%–8.24%) from lower to the higher mass flow rate in 40° HB with Al2O3 nanofluid at 5% volume concentration are observed when compared to water as base fluid.  相似文献

In this study, the simultaneous use of nanofluid and phase changing material as a coolant for photovoltaic fluid collector system and its effects are investigated experimentally. Two types of nanofluid are taken for the consideration, that is, ZnO and CuO, which are water‐based fluid. The experiments are performed in five different types of photovoltaic thermal system conventional: PT, PVT (ZnO), PVT (CuO), PCM medium (PVT/PCM/ZnO), and PCM medium (PVT/PCM/CuO). The results are obtained for surface temperature, energy, and thermal efficiency, and it is compared with each other. Further, the effect of the nanofluid as the effective alternative for pure deionized water is measured. From the results, it is evident that the PVT/PCM/CuO system minted 15% high electric output compared with convention module. Furthermore, the addition of the CuO nanofluid increases the thermal output significantly up to 8% for PVT and 12% for PCM without energy consumption. It also found that the nanofluid increases the overall energy efficiency of the system compared with convention PV.  相似文献

The execution of metal hydride reactor (MHR) for storage of hydrogen is greatly affected by thermal effects occurred throughout the sorption of hydrogen. In this paper, based on different governing equations, a numerical model of MHR filled by MmNi4.6Al0.4 is formed using ANSYS Fluent for hydrogen absorption process. The validation of model is done by relating its simulation outcomes with published experimental results and found a good agreement with a deviation of less than 5%; hence present model accuracy is considered to be more than 95%. For extraction or supply of heat, water or oil is extensively used in MHR during the absorption or the desorption process so as to improve the competency of the system. Since nanofluid (mixture of base fluid and nanoparticles) has a higher heat transfer characteristics, in this paper the nanofluid is used in place of the conventional heat transfer fluid in MHR. Further the numerical model of MHR is modified with nanofluid as heat extraction fluid and results are presented. The Al2O3/H2O, CuO/H2O and MgO/H2O nanofluids are selected and simulations are carried out. The results are obtained for different parameters like nanoparticle material, hydrogen concentration, supply pressure and cooling fluid temperature. It is seen that 5 vol% CuO/H2O nanofluid is thermally superior to Al2O3/H2O and MgO/H2O nanofluid. The heat transfer rate improves by the increment in the supply pressure of hydrogen as well as decrement in temperature of nanofluid. The CuO/H2O nanofluid increases the heat transfer rate of MHR up to 10% and the hydrogen absorption time is improved by 9.5%. Thus it is advantageous to use the nanofluid as a heat transfer cooling fluid for the MHR to store hydrogen.  相似文献

This paper discusses the impact of using various types of nanofluids on heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics in triangular shaped microchannel heat sink (MCHS). In this study, an aluminum MCHS performance is examined using water as a base fluid with different types of nanofluids such as Al2O3, Ag, CuO, diamond, SiO2, and TiO2 as the coolants with nanoparticle volume fraction of 2%. The three-dimensional steady, laminar flow and heat transfer governing equations are solved using the finite volume method. It is inferred that diamond-H2O nanofluid has the lowest temperature and the highest heat transfer coefficient, while Al2O3-H2O nanofluid has the highest temperature and the lowest heat transfer coefficient. SiO2-H2O nanofluid has the highest pressure drop and wall shear stress while Ag-H2O nanofluid has the lowest pressure drop and wall shear stress among other nanofluid types. Based on the presented results, diamond-H2O and Ag-H2O nanofluids are recommended to achieve overall heat transfer enhancement and low pressure drop, respectively, compared with pure water.  相似文献

Conjugate heat transfer in laminar slot jets impinging on multiple protruding hot sources using various nanofluids has been investigated numerically by employing (i) a mass-based modeling and an (ii) Eulerian-based multi-phase modeling (MPM). Various parameters such as streamline contours, isotherm profiles, local Nusselt number (Nu), average Nusselt number (Nuavg) are evaluated for different nanofluids (Ag–water, Al2O3–water, CuO–water and TiO2–water), various range of Reynolds number (Re), particle volume fraction (?), diameter of the nanoparticle (d) and thermal conductivity ratio (kr). The steady, laminar, incompressible and two-dimensional flows are considered for the analysis. Finite-volume method with SIMPLE algorithm is used to solve continuity, momentum and energy equations along with boundary conditions. The highest heat transfer rate is achieved at ??=?0.05 for any protruding blocks and Reynolds number. Conjugate heat transfer rate of nanofluids increases with decreasing the diameter of nanoparticles. Here, Al2O3–water nanofluid is found to exhibit highest average Nusselt number compared to other nanofluids. The mixture based MPM approach with considering slip velocity yields higher heat transfer rate compared to the results obtained by single phase modeling approach.  相似文献

An experimental and numerical investigation of the thermal performance of three different nanofluids ethylene glycol‐based CuO, water‐based CuO, and Al2O3 is done in a serpentine‐shaped micorchannel heat sink. The microchannels considered ranged from 810 μm to 890 μm in hydraulic diameter and were made of copper material. The experiments were conducted with the Reynolds number ranging from approximately 100 to 1300. The forced convective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids shows that there is an improved heat transfer rate compared to base fluids water and ethylene glycol. The experimental results also confirm that there is an earlier transition from laminar to turbulent flow in microchannels. The results prove that as the hydraulic diameter decreases there is increased pressure drop and the heat transfer coefficient increases for both the base fluids and nanofluids. The flow characteristics are discussed based on the pressure drop. While investigating the heat transfer coefficient of the three different nanofluids the nanofluid CuO/EG has the highest heat transfer coefficient as a result of the material's property. This research also will encourage young researchers to work on nanofluids of varying nanoparticle size and concentration to discover new results.  相似文献

Lattice Boltzmann Method is applied to investigate the mixed convection flows utilizing nanofluids in a lid-driven cavity. The fluid in the cavity is a water-based nanofluid containing Cu, Cuo or Al2O3 nanoparticles. The effects of Reynolds number and solid volume fraction for different nanofluids on hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics are investigated. The effective thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluid are calculated by Chon and Brinkman models, respectively. The results indicate that the effects of solid volume fraction grow stronger sequentially for Al2O3, Cuo and Cu. In addition the increases of Reynolds number leads to decrease the solid concentration effect.  相似文献
