Concern about heavy metal accumulation in agricultural soils under long-term application of phosphate fertilizers and organic wastes makes investigation of heavy metals in agricultural soils imperative. This study examines the total, available and chemical forms of lead (Pb) in a savanna soil after 50 years of continuous cultivation and application of NPK fertilizers and farmyard manure (FYM). Total Pb concentration ranged from 28 to 42 mg kg(-1) over 2-3 times more than the average Pb concentration of non-polluted soils worldwide. Available Pb was, however, less than 2 mg kg(-1) indicating that Pb in the soils was largely insoluble. There were no detectable concentrations of water soluble and organically-bound Pb fractions. On average, residual Pb accounted for over 80% of total Pb. Compared to the natural site, cultivation and fertilization with NPK and FYM increased total Pb concentration by 19 and 17%, respectively, or, on mass basis, by 10 and 35 kg ha(-1), respectively, after 50 years. Soil Pb showed strong linear relations with sand fraction and inorganic phosphorus in the soils. Thermodynamic equilibrium relations provided some indirect evidence that the control on soluble Pb appeared to be chloropyromorphite [Pb5(PO4)3Cl], an insoluble lead phosphate mineral.  相似文献

Metals are transferred into the food web by ground-dwelling organisms, among others. This study aimed to identify the most important factors that determine the bioavailability of heavy metals to the spider Pirata piraticus living in the intertidal sediments of the Scheldt estuary (Flanders, Belgium). At five locations, which represent a varying degree of metal contamination and salinity, the superficial layer of sediments was characterised for physico-chemical properties and heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Zn) content and extractability. Spiders were sampled at the same locations and analysed for Cd, Cu and Zn. Higher Cd, Cu and Zn contents were found in spiders on sites with lower total metal contents in the sediment. These sites were closest to the river mouth and were characterised by a higher salinity. Significant, positive correlations were found between the chloride content of the sediments and the Cd, Cu and Zn content of P. piraticus. Similarly, a strong relationship was observed between the ratio of exchangeable Cd and Zn to the total cation exchange capacity and the contents of these elements in P. piraticus. These field data indicated that salinity, cation exchange capacity and exchangeable metal contents were of most importance in determining bioavailability of heavy metals in these intertidal sediments.  相似文献

A systematic investigation evaluated the concentrations of a selected number of trace elements (Cd, Co, Cu, Li, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) in carbonates of the benthic foraminifera Ammonia tepida collected from surface sediments of the highly polluted harbour of Naples. Application of cleaning procedures, combined with Scanning Electron Microscopy investigation (SEM) of the analysed shells allowed reliable quantification of the elements in the carbonate lattice. Adoption of biogenic carbonate/seawater distribution coefficients reported in the literature provided the ranges of variability of total dissolved trace elements in the studied marine environment. Very high concentrations of Zn, Cd, and Cu calculated in seawater (from 100 to 10,000 times higher than those reported for uncontaminated Mediterranean seawaters) testify to intense effects of anthropogenic impact on the harbour mainly related to the industrial and commercial activities carried out in the neighbouring area. The ensemble of the obtained results emphasizes the high potential of measurements of trace elements in the biogenic carbonates of benthic foraminifera as tracers of anthopogenic pollution of seawater and reliable proxies of potentially bioavailable forms (as free ions and/or more labile organic complexes) of seawater dissolved metals.  相似文献

In Flanders, sampling guidelines for investigations on contamination of soils are in development. One detailed sampling guideline is currently available with respect to the prospective investigation in the frame of the decree related to soil sanitation. Four strategies for sampling may be followed as a function of available information about pollution sources. Guidelines indicate what has to be sampled (top soil, deeper soil, soil water), how sampling points must be determined, how the number of samples and analyses is determined and what parameters need to be analysed. The example given shows that sampling guidelines will strongly depend on the ultimate goal of a particular sampling. A sampling procedure should be developed with close consideration of practical aspects and limitations, in order to be practical, realistic and cost-effective.  相似文献

Phytoplankton biomass and production in the river meuse (Belgium)   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
The biomass and production of the phytoplankton in a relatively unpolluted reach of the River Meuse (Belgium) were followed through two years (1983 and 1984). Chlorophyll a varied from 0.2 to about 120 mg m−3, and production ranged between 0.05 and 5.78 gC m−2 d−1. The mean photosynthetic quotient (PQ) was 1.25.

The parameters of the light-photosynthesis relationship (Popt and lk) were calculated and related to the variations of temperature and light in the water column. A simple model allowed calculations of the annual production, which was estimated to be 494 gC m−2 yr−1 in 1983 and 547 gC m−2 yr−1 in 1984.

Finally, a simple model is developed, which explains the relationship between phytoplankton development and discharge; this model shows how the effect of discharge can be described by a “dilution rate” of the plankton growing in the river water.  相似文献

This study aimed at surveying lower secondary schools in southern Italy, in a highly polluted area. A community close to an industrial area and three villages in rural areas was investigated. Indoor temperature, relative humidity (RH), gaseous pollutants (CO2 and NO2), selected biological pollutants in indoor dust, and the indoor/outdoor mass concentration and elemental composition of PM2.5 were ascertained. Temperature and RH were within, or close to, the comfort range, while CO2 frequently exceeded the threshold of 1000 ppm, indicating inadequate air exchange rate. In all the classrooms, median NO2 levels were above the WHO threshold value. Dermatophagoides p. allergen concentration was below the sensitizing threshold, while high endotoxin levels were detected in the classrooms, suggesting schools may produce significant risks of endotoxin exposure. Concentration and solubility of PM2.5 elements were used to identify the sources of indoor particles. Indoor concentration of most elements was higher than outdoors. Resuspension was responsible for the indoor increase in soil components. For elements from industrial emission (Cd, Co, Ni, Pb, Sb, Tl, V), the indoor concentration depended on penetration from the outside. For these elements, differences in rural vs industrial concentrations were found, suggesting industrial sources may influence indoor air quality nearby schools.  相似文献

The condition of the periwinkle Littorina littorea, expressed in terms of its shell morphology, reproductive impairment (i.e. female sterility/intersex, male penis shedding), trematode infestation load, lipid reserves and dry/wet weight ratio, was determined in function of environmental stress along the polluted Western and relatively clean Eastern Scheldt estuary (The Netherlands). The upstream increasing pollution and decreasing salinity levels along the Western Scheldt estuary (Fig. 1) are reflected in the dry/wet weight ratio and lipid content of the periwinkles. Compared to the Eastern Scheldt, female intersex (i.e. indicator of TBT pollution) and sterility occurred more frequently in the Western Scheldt estuary, while male penis shedding was even restricted to the latter estuary. The highest population intersex and sterility incidence was found near the harbour of Vlissingen and reflects potential nautical activities. The number of trematode infested periwinkles did not differ between both estuaries, although local sampling site differences were detected within each estuary, reflecting the complex interactions that exist among parasites, hosts and the local environment. Finally, both estuaries were maximally discriminated from each other based on the shell weight of the periwinkles using a canonical discriminant analysis. Periwinkles with the heaviest shells were found in the Western Scheldt estuary and may reflect growth rate or structural population differences caused by the less favourable living conditions in the Western Scheldt estuary.  相似文献

Arsenic pollution at the industrial site of Reppel-Bocholt (north Belgium)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
An industrial site, polluted with As and heavy metals, was investigated by combining chemical (sequential extractions and pHstat leaching tests), physical and mineralogical characterization of soil samples and slag fragments, and by the analysis of soil porewater aimed at assessing the distribution, speciation and mobility of heavy metals and As. On the site itself, arsenic concentrations up to 3.6% in surficial soil samples and up to 22% in slag fragments were found, together with elevated concentrations (percentage level) of Cu, Co, Ni, Zn and Pb. High concentrations of arsenic (up to 38,000 microg/l) and heavy metals (up to 1700 microg/l Cu and 4700 microg/l Zn) were also found in the in situ sampled soil porewater, highlighting the considerable availability of As, Zn and Cu for uptake by plants and leaching to the ground water. Sequential extractions also indicated a high availability of arsenic and copper in most samples and slag fragments of the industrial site, although poorly reactive phases were encountered as well. pHstat leaching tests confirmed that the present leaching of contaminants is alarming. Moreover, soil acidification will enhance the leaching of contaminants, emphasizing that remediation of the industrial site is urgent. Small scale variability of total metal concentrations and metal speciation, both in the horizontal and vertical direction, and the occurrence of a camouflage layer underline the importance of elaborate sampling for pollution assessment on an industrial site.  相似文献

This article deals with the relation betweenhousing and poverty in Flanders (Belgium). Wedescribe how home tenure and housing costsdeveloped differently for different incomegroups. Furthermore, we assess the impact ofthese evolutions on poverty and welfaredistribution. Our analyses show that in theobserved period homeownership increasedstrongly among higher-income categories andremained stable or even decreased amonglow-income households. Average housing costsincreased more for low-income households thanfor high-income households, leading to a sharpincrease in problematic rent-to-income ratiosfor the former. It appears that especially theprivate rented sector is problematic. Thesocial rented sector is evaluated ratherpositively. Taking account of housing costsleads to higher poverty levels and higherwelfare inequality compared to the situationwhere only current income is used to calculatepoverty and welfare distribution.  相似文献

In order to preserve the overall landscape values in the Pajottenland, the province of Vlaams-Brabant initiated a campaign to raise awareness of local authorities and stakeholders and to stimulate co-coordinated actions. As very few scientific studies exist for the region, an interdisciplinary study was commissioned from the University of Ghent, involving archaeologists, historians, geographers and planners. This article evaluates the process of integration between the scientific disciplines and between the researchers (interdisciplinary) and program team and stakeholders (transdisciplinary) involved in this project. Potentials and difficulties encountered in the successive phases are evaluated and discussed. The interdisciplinary trajectory worked relatively smoothly as it was focused upon the realization of the first integrated landscape biography for the region. This biography includes scientific results as well as an integration of the complex legal and administrative instruments, which are necessary for the implementation of the study. Also, a methodology was developed for assessing landscape values at the municipal level, to be carried out by local stakeholders. This methodology was demonstrated with the case study of Gooik. The transdisciplinary integration encountered a series of difficulties, which mainly related to the unclear and shifting objectives of the program team and to aspects of communication between the partners and the lack of a common language.  相似文献

Recent observations in the tidal Scheldt River and Estuary revealed a poor microbiological water quality and substantial variability of this quality which can hardly be assigned to a single factor. To assess the importance of tides, river discharge, point sources, upstream concentrations, mortality and settling a new model (SLIM-EC) was built. This model was first validated by comparison with the available field measurements of Escherichia coli (E. coli, a common fecal bacterial indicator) concentrations. The model simulations agreed well with the observations, and in particular were able to reproduce the observed long-term median concentrations and variability. Next, the model was used to perform sensitivity runs in which one process/forcing was removed at a time. These simulations revealed that the tide, upstream concentrations and the mortality process are the primary factors controlling the long-term median E. coli concentrations and the observed variability. The tide is crucial to explain the increased concentrations upstream of important inputs, as well as a generally increased variability. Remarkably, the wastewater treatment plants discharging in the study domain do not seem to have a significant impact. This is due to a dilution effect, and to the fact that the concentrations coming from upstream (where large cities are located) are high. Overall, the settling process as it is presently described in the model does not significantly affect the simulated E. coli concentrations.  相似文献

We have determined four types of upper mire ecosystems, and have described their morphometric, botanical and hydro-chemical properties. Carbon mineralisation and plant germination and growth (Lactuca sativa seeds) tests have been performed in two soils of different properties, experimentally spiked with pentachlorophenol (PCP) or Cr (VI), in concentrations between 0.001 and 1000 mg kg(-1). The evaluation has been done considering the following parameters of carbon transformation test: soil cumulative basal respiration after 14 days incubation, substrate induced respiration after 12 h of glucose addition, and, in the plant germination and growth test: number of germinated seeds, root elongation and total biomass produced. The most sensitive assay found in our work has been carbon mineralisation test, from which the lowest toxic concentrations were obtained (especially substrate induced respiration test). In the plant germination and growth test, the measurement of root elongation has shown the best sensitiveness, followed by plant biomass and seed germination numbers. Regarding the contaminants, the highest toxicity, considering the minimum concentration with toxic effect, has been found in PCP (0.01 mg kg(-1)) in C mineralisation test in the granitic soil. For Cr, the minimum concentration with toxic effect has been 0.1 mg kg(-1), also in the C mineralisation test and the granitic soil. The granitic soil has shown more vulnerability to the pollutants assayed in the respiration test, whereas the calcareous soil has shown more vulnerability in the plant germination and growth test.  相似文献

During recent years, water management in The Netherlands has been broadening its scope by: (a) including aspects of economics, sociology and physical planning, and (b) introducing interactive policy making; this paper illustrates these developments using the Westerschelde estuary as an example. The Westerschelde strategy aims at optimizing the multi-national use of this estuary. The main functions are navigation and ecology, and the paper shows how these functions can be combined. An interactive management model, the 'COSMO-Westerschelde'is described, which assists decision makers in comparing strategies for estuarine management under different scenarios.  相似文献

The current paper aims to check whether the factors affecting metal mobility in intertidal sediments and floodplain soils of the river Scheldt, as identified under controlled greenhouse conditions in previous studies, also play a similar role under variable field conditions. Moreover, we aimed to assess the importance of these factors as a function of sampling time and depth, with respect to the natural variations in water table levels. This field monitoring revealed that the mobility of metals in intertidal sediments of the Scheldt estuary indeed are affected by factors which were identified to affect the metal fate in the upper sediment layer in previous greenhouse experiments. However, the effects were often less pronounced under field conditions. This can be attributed to the lower sampling resolution, the occurrence of interactions between factors, the disturbance of microbial communities during setup of greenhouse experiments and the more moderate environmental conditions in the field, affecting microbial and enzymatic activities. At most of the sampled wetlands, the level of the water table fluctuated only slightly during fall, winter and spring, whereas it decreased substantially during summer, especially at the sites with more sandy sediments. The highest sulphide concentrations were found at the sites where the water table level never decreased considerably. These sulphides primarily suppress the availability of Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn. Organic complexation resulted in the mobilisation of Cu, Ni and Cr. The concentrations of Cd, Ni and Zn in the pore water were affected by Fe/Mn oxide reduction, whereas Cd and Zn concentrations appeared to be also affected by the salinity.  相似文献

The Southern Bight of the North Sea is particularly exposed to anthropogenic contamination, due to heavy urbanisation and industrialisation of its catchment area. The present work focuses on polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and metal contamination of the marine environment along and off the Belgian coast. Its objectives were to compare the concentrations of seven PCB congeners and four heavy metals in the sediments (a repository for anthropogenic contaminants) and in the asteroid Asterias rubens (a recognized bioindicator species). Nineteen sampling stations were considered between the mouth of the Scheldt Estuary and the southern limit of the Belgian coast (asteroids were found in 10 out of the 19 stations). PCB and metal concentrations measured in sediments and asteroids were in the range of values reported in previous studies. Stations under direct influence of the Scheldt were the most impacted by the considered contaminants. Metal concentrations varied according to the grain-size fraction considered. In asteroids, PCBs and metals were found to be selectively distributed among body compartments, and pyloric caeca were found to most efficiently discriminate between sampling stations contamination levels. PCB and metal analysis of sediments provided a physicochemical evaluation of the contamination, whereas analysis of asteroids introduced a biological dimension to the approach by taking into account bioavailability of the contaminants.  相似文献

The aquatic hyphomycete Heliscus lugdunensis and the terrestrial fungus Verticillium cf. alboatrum, both isolated from a highly polluted surface water, were investigated for their tolerance against Cd and Zn. Hl-H4 showed a 50% growth inhibition at 0.1 mM Cd, whereas at 0.7 mM Cd the growth of Va-H4 was only reduced by 30%. The fungi also showed a remarkable difference in their Zn-tolerance. The growth of Va-H4 was not inhibited at 1 mM Zn, whereas for Hl-H4 no growth occurred above 0.3 mM Zn. The biosorption and accumulation capacities for Cd or Zn of both fungi differed between the fungal species. In a 0.1 mM Cd-medium Hl-H4 biosorbed 15-fold and accumulated 39-fold more Cd than Va-H4. Exposure to 0.3 mM Zn resulted in a 13-fold higher biosorption and 11-fold higher accumulation for Hl-H4 than Va-H4. As glutathione (GSH) is known to be involved in the phytochelatin synthesis and other stress related processes we investigated its synthesis. Both fungi increased their synthesis of GSH in response to Cd. For Hl-H4 a concentration of 0.0125 mM Cd, corresponding to an intracellular Cd content of 2.1 nmol Cd mg(-1) dw, increased the GSH content, whereas Va-H4 only responded with a higher production of GSH at 1 mM Cd and a concomitant intracellular Cd content of 22.5 nmol Cd mg(-1) dw. An increased GSH synthesis under Zn-stress was only detectable for Va-H4 (20 mM).  相似文献

Zinc enters surface waters from a variety of different emission sources. The geo-referenced model GREAT-ER (Geo-referenced Regional Exposure Assessment Tool for European Rivers) was applied to simulate spatially resolved zinc concentrations in the Ruhr river basin. The model links geo-referenced emissions (loads) to concentrations at local and regional scales and allows for evaluating the relative importance of emission sources. For each emission from point sources (household, industry, urban runoff) and non-point sources (agriculture, natural background), zinc loads were independently estimated using appropriate reference parameters (number of inhabitants, surface area drained, agricultural area, zinc ore regions). For point emissions from industry and mine drainage loads were taken directly from available data compilations. Simulated total zinc concentrations agree well with monitoring data. The strength of the modeling tool became evident from the unequivocal link that could be established between observed surface water concentrations and the large zinc input from geogenic sources and abandoned mines. These emission sources are regional characteristics of the Ruhr river basin and due to the fact that some regions are relatively rich in zinc ore, which was extracted over a long period of time. Although most of these emissions occur in the upper part of the catchment, they contribute to approximately one-third to the zinc load at the confluence with the Rhine River. Urban emissions from household, traffic (road) and buildings (roof) were shown to be responsible for approximately half of the concentration in the Ruhr at the confluence with the Rhine River.  相似文献

The occurrence and spatial-temporal variability of 25 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was studied from May 1998 to November 2000 in the Scheldt estuary. Target VOCs were selected from lists of priority pollutants to the North Sea, and included chlorinated short-chain hydrocarbons (CHCs), monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) and chlorinated monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CMAHs). Samples were taken between Vlissingen and Temse over a 95 km trajectory, and analysed by purge-and-trap and high resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Data were attended by analyses deemed 'in control' by a rigorous quality assurance/quality control program, as proposed by Quality Assurance of Information for Marine Environmental Monitoring in Europe (QUASIMEME). CHCs were among the most commonly found VOCs in the estuary, ranging from a few ng l(-1) to several microg l(-1). Most analytes were traceable to a single input source in the upper part of the estuary, which is densely populated and highly industrialized. By contrast, the occurrence of MAHs resulted from contributions of a wide spectrum of sources. The CMAHs were less abundant in the water column, and were mainly detected as chlorobenzene and 1,4-dichlorobenzene. Concentrations of several priority VOCs have markedly decreased since 1995 owing to emission reduction efforts within international frameworks for the protection of the North Sea.  相似文献
