Eigenpaxels and a neural-network approach to image classification

A expansion encoding approach to image classification is presented. Localized principal components or "eigenpaxels" are used as a set of basis functions to represent images. That is, principal-component analysis is applied locally rather than on the entire image. The "eigenpaxels" are statistically determined using a database of the images of interest. Classification based on visual similarity is achieved through the use of a single-layer error-correcting neural network. Expansion encoding and the technique of subsampling are key elements in the processing stages of the eigenpaxel algorithm. Tested using a database of frontal face images consisting of 40 individuals, the algorithm exhibits equivalent performance to other comparable but more cumbersome methods. In addition, the technique is shown to be robust to various types of image noise.     

Security and privacy for multimedia database management systems

This paper describes security and privacy issues for multimedia database management systems. Multimedia data includes text, images, audio and video. It describes access control for multimedia database management systems and describes security policies and security architectures for such systems. Privacy problems that result from multimedia data mining are also discussed.

A human-oriented image retrieval system using interactive genetic algorithm

Content-based image retrieval has been actively studied in several fields. This provides more effective management and retrieval of images than the keyword-based approach. However, most of the conventional methods lack the capability to effectively incorporate human intuition and emotion into retrieving images. It is difficult to obtain satisfactory results when the user wants the image that cannot be explicitly described or can be requested only based on impression. In order to solve this problem and supplement the lack of the user's expression capability, we have developed an image retrieval system based on human preference and emotion by using an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA). This system extracts the feature from images by wavelet transform, and provides a user-friendly means to retrieve an image from a large database when the user cannot clearly define what the image must be. Therefore, this facilitates the search for the image not only with explicit queries, but also with implicit queries such as "cheerful impression," "gloomy impression," and so on. A thorough experiment with a 2000 image database shows the usefulness of the proposed system.     

On-line Scheduling for Jobs with Arbitrary Release Times

This paper considers the problem of on-line scheduling a list of independent jobs in which each job has an arbitrary release time on m parallel identical machines. A tight bound is given for List Scheduling(LS) algorithm and a better algorithm is given for m2.AMS Subject Classifications: 90B35 (90C27).This research is supported by Singapore-MIT Alliance.     

Learning gender with support faces

Nonlinear support vector machines (SVMs) are investigated for appearance-based gender classification with low-resolution "thumbnail" faces processed from 1,755 images from the FERET (FacE REcognition Technology) face database. The performance of SVMs (3.4% error) is shown to be superior to traditional pattern classifiers (linear, quadratic, Fisher linear discriminant, nearest-neighbor) as well as more modern techniques, such as radial basis function (RBF) classifiers and large ensemble-RBF networks. Furthermore, the difference in classification performance with low-resolution "thumbnails" (21×12 pixels) and the corresponding higher-resolution images (84×48 pixels) was found to be only 1%, thus demonstrating robustness and stability with respect to scale and the degree of facial detail
