In the Docklands area of London lies the ‘Limehouse Link’, a dual-bore road tunnel used by around 80,000 cars each day. A monumental and highly expensive piece of construction, the Limehouse Link has nonetheless received almost no attention from architectural historians or others concerned with the history of construction, engineering or urban development.This article provides an introduction to the Limehouse Link, explaining some of the fundamental characteristics of its construction and position in London's urban landscape. More importantly, the article then considers how one might understand an everyday yet monumental construction such as this: a tunnel without obvious aesthetic form, design intent or symbolic meaning, but which nonetheless has an undeniable presence in the city. The Limehouse Link is therefore interpreted in terms of the car driver's immersive experience of the tunnel, more active constructions of this experience through sensory qualities of sound, representations of the tunnel in different media and art, ways of knowing the history of Limehouse, and, in particular, as a kind of aesthetic experience. The article concludes that driving through the Limehouse Link is to engage in a different way of knowing the postmodern city. 相似文献

After serious accidents, which happened in tunnels in the last few years, most countries have established ‘Task Forces’ in order to evaluate the safety of existing tunnels and to establish new safety measures. Based on two actual examples, the new safety measures are presented in this paper on a practical view for the first and on a theoretical view for the second. The western coast of Norway consists of many long fjords. This article describes how two of these fjords are crossed by two subsea road tunnels, 5,860 m and 4,405 m long, respectively. The longer tunnel, the Byfjord Tunnel, is the world's longest and deepest subsea road tunnel, at 223 m below sea level. The rheological behavior of the rock proximate to excavations is of importance and practical interest for engineers in the design of soft rock tunnels. In situ rheology tests may be conducted to determine the appropriate parameters of the rock masses and the ground stress component; however, this can cost a great deal in both expense and time. Hence, it is useful to study back-analysis of viscoelastic displacements induced by the excavation of tunnels. Taking four rheological models, namely, Kelvin body, Maxwell body, Poynting–Thomson body and Kelvin–Voigt body as examples, this paper presents the basic finite element equations for such back-analysis, and the associated calculation methods for practical applications. A trial calculation method for the different models is adopted so as to obtain the most suitable rheological model and corresponding parameters. Furthermore, the authors have successfully applied the back-analysis method in a test section of a road tunnel excavated in soft rock. Compared with the direct in situ rheology tests, the back-analysis method presented by this paper is more concise and involves less money and time. 相似文献
