Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) play a significant role in improving the efficiency of gas turbines by increasing their operating temperatures. The TBCs in advanced turbine engines are prone to silicate particles attack while operating at high temperatures. The silicate particles impinge on the hot TBC surfaces and melt to form calcia-magnesia-aluminosilicate (CMAS) glass deposits leading to coating premature failure. Fine powder of CMAS with the composition matching the desert sand has been synthesized by solution combustion technique. The present study also demonstrates the preparation of flowable yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and cluster paired YSZ (YSZ-Ln2O3, Ln = Dy and Gd) powders by single-step solution combustion technique. The as-synthesized powders have been plasma sprayed and the interaction of the free standing TBCs with CMAS at high-temperatures (1200 °C, 1270 °C and 1340 °C for 24 h) has been investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis of CMAS attacked TBCs revealed a reduction in phase transformation of tetragonal to monoclinic zirconia for YSZ-Ln2O3 (m-ZrO2: 44%) coatings than YSZ (m-ZrO2: 67%). The field emission scanning electron microscopic images show improved CMAS resistance for YSZ-Ln2O3 coatings than YSZ coatings.  相似文献

To protect the high-temperature components of gas turbines, 6–8 wt.% yttria stabilised zirconia (YSZ) has been extensively used as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material. However, its application is severely limited at high temperatures because of zirconia phase transition and sintering densification above 1200 °C. This study developed modified YSZ with enhanced high-temperature thermal properties owing to the addition of various rare-earth doping elements. Among the various rare earth-doped compositions, all the thermal properties were significantly improved in compositions containing scandium, gadolinium, and dysprosium. Furthermore, in the selected compositions, the high-temperature thermal properties were analysed under heat treatment conditions of 1300 °C, with a target turbine inlet temperature (TIT) of 1500 °C. The high-temperature phase stability of the tetragonal phase was significantly improved in the newly developed compositions, and they exhibited glass-like low thermal conductivity (~0.984 W/mK) due to the influence of lattice distortion caused by the differences in the substituent-ion mass and size, and the oxygen vacancies. Moreover, there was notable improvement in the thermal expansion coefficient (~11 × 10?6/K) and resistance to high-temperature densification.  相似文献

Three different kinds of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) — 8YSZ, 38YSZ and a dual-layered (DL) TBCs with pure Y2O3 on the top of 8YSZ were produced on nickel-based superalloy substrate by air plasma spraying (APS). The Calcium–Magnesium–Aluminum-Silicate (CMAS) corrosion resistance of these three kinds of coatings were researched via burner rig test at 1350 °C for different durations. The microstructures and phase compositions of the coatings were characterized by SEM, EDS and XRD. With the increase of Y content, TBCs exhibit better performance against CMAS corrosion. The corrosion resistance against CMAS of different TBCs in descending was 8YSZ + Y2O3, 38YSZ and 8YSZ, respectively. YSZ diffused from TBCs into the CMAS, and formed Y-lean ZrO2 in TBCs because of the higher diffusion rate and solubility of Y3+ in CMAS than Zr4+. At the same time, 38YSZ/8YSZ + Y2O3 reacts with CAMS to form Ca4Y6(SiO4)6O/Y4·67(SiO4)3O with dense structure, which can prevent further infiltration of CMAS. The failure of 8YSZ coatings occurred at the interface between the ceramic coating and the thermally grown oxide scale (TGO)/bond coating. During the burner rig test, the Y2O3 layer of the DL TBCs peeled off progressively and the 8YSZ layer exposed gradually. DL coatings keep roughly intact and did not meet the failure criteria after 3 h test. 38YSZ coating was partially ablated, the overall thickness of the coating is thinned simultaneously after 2 h. Therefore, 8YSZ + Y2O3 dual-layered coating is expected to be a CMAS corrosion-resistant TBC with practical properties.  相似文献

Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are used to protect hot-components in aero-engines from hot gases. In this paper, the microstructure and thermo-physical and mechanical properties of plasma sprayed YSZ coatings under the condition of calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) deposits were investigated. Si and Ca in the CMAS rapidly penetrated the coating at 1250 °C and accelerated sintering of the coating. At the interface between the CMAS and YSZ coating, the YSZ coating was partially dissolved in the CMAS, inducing the phase transformation from tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase. Also, the porosity of the coating was reduced from ∼25% to 5%. As a result, the thermal diffusivity at 1200 °C increased from 0.3 mm2/s to 0.7 mm2/s, suggesting a significant degradation in the thermal barrier effect. Also, the coating showed a ∼40% increase in the microhardness. The degradation mechanism of TBC induced by CMAS was discussed.  相似文献

Calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) attack has been considered as a significant failure mechanism for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). As a promising series of TBC candidates, rare-earth phosphates have attracted increasing attention. This work evaluated the resistance characteristics of LnPO4 (Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd) compounds to CMAS attack at 1250 °C. Due to the chemical reaction between molten CMAS and LnPO4, a dense, crack-free reaction layer, mainly composed of Ca3Ln7(PO4)(SiO4)5O2 apatite, CaAl2Si2O8 and MgAl2O4, was formed on the surface of compounds, which had positive effect on suppressing CMAS infiltration. The depth of CMAS penetration in LnPO4 (Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd) decreased in the sequence of NdPO4, SmPO4 and GdPO4. GdPO4 had the best resistance characteristics to CMAS attack among the three compounds. The related mechanism was discussed based on the formation ability of apatite phase caused by the reaction between molten CMAS and LnPO4.  相似文献

Plasma spray physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD) was used to deposit yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coatings with different columnar morphologies by varying the spray distance. Although similar quasi-columnar structures were formed at the spray distances of 600 mm and 1400 mm, the formation mechanisms of particles in the coatings were different. Besides, an electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) like columnar coating out of pure vapor was deposited at a spray distance of 1000 mm and the columnar consisted of elongated nano-sized secondary columns. The hardness and Young׳s modulus of the coatings were investigated. Compared to the other two quasi-columnar structures, the EB-PVD like columnar coating exhibited higher hardness (~9.0 GPa ) and Young׳s modulus (~110.9 GPa), mainly due to its low porosity and defect.  相似文献

In this article, the nanostructured 2 mol% Gd2O3-4.5 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2(2GdYSZ) coating was developed by the atmospheric plasma spraying technique. And the microstructure and thermal properties of plasma-sprayed 2GdYSZ coating were investigated. The result from the investigation indicates that the as-sprayed coating is characterized by typical microstructure consisting of melted zones, nano-zones, splats, nano-pores, high-volume spheroidal pores and micro-cracks. The 2GdYSZ coating shows a lower resistance to destabilization of the metastable tetragonal (t′) phase compared to the yttria stabilized zirconia(YSZ). The thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of the nano-2GdYSZ coating at room temperature are 0.431 mm2 s−1 and 1.042 W/m K, respectively. Addition of gadolinia to the nano-YSZ can significantly reduce the thermal conductivity compared to the nano-YSZ and the conventional YSZ. The reduction is mainly attributed to the synergetic effect of gadolinia doping along with nanostructure.  相似文献

Zirconia doped with yttrium, widely known as yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), has found recent applications in advanced electronic and energy devices, particularly when deposited in thin film form by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Although ample studies reported the thermal conductivity of YSZ films and coatings, these data were typically limited to Y2O3 concentrations around 8 mol% and thicknesses greater than 1 μm, which were primarily targeted for thermal barrier coating applications. Here, we present the first experimental report of the thermal conductivity of YSZ thin films (∼50 nm), deposited by plasma-enhanced ALD (PEALD), with variable Y2O3 content (0–36.9 mol%). Time-domain thermoreflectance measures the effective thermal conductivity of the film and its interfaces, independently confirmed with frequency-domain thermoreflectance. The effective thermal conductivity decreases from 1.85 to 1.22 W m−1 K−1 with increasing Y2O3 doping concentration from 0 to 7.7 mol%, predominantly due to increased phonon scattering by oxygen vacancies, and exhibits relatively weak concentration dependence above 7.7 mol%. The effective thermal conductivities of our PEALD YSZ films are higher by ∼15%–128% than those reported previously for thermal ALD YSZ films with similar composition. We attribute this to the relatively larger grain sizes (∼23–27 nm) of our films.  相似文献

La2Ce2O7 with low thermal conductivity as a potential candidate of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) was co-doped with (Ca, Fe) or (Sr, Mn) in order to further improve its thermal radiation at high temperatures. The microstructure, chemical composition, infrared emission properties (reflection and absorption properties) and thermal cycling lifetime of the coatings were respectively investigated. The results revealed that La2-xCaxCe2-xFexO7+δ and La2-xSrxCe2-xMnxO7+δ coatings had defected fluorite structure and their infrared emittances were much higher than that of the parent La2Ce2O7. The superior infrared emission could be ascribed to the enhancement of the intrinsic absorption (electron transition absorption), free-carrier absorption and impurity absorption as well as lattice vibration absorption. However, the thermal cycling lifetime of La2Ce2O7 coatings presented a reduction after the (Ca, Fe) or (Sr, Mn) substitution, primarily due to the decrease in the fracture toughness and the increase in the thermal conductivity.  相似文献

The microstructure dependence of thermal radiative properties is critically needed to the design and operation of the thermal barrier coating systems. In this study, different yttria-stabilized zirconia coating layers are fabricated by air plasma spray with three average porosities 5.9%, 14.5%, and 23.3% at coating thickness from 283 to 955 µm. The room-temperature, spectral directional–hemispherical transmittance, and reflectance are measured over the wavelength range from 1.35 to 2.5 µm. The radiative properties of absorption and scattering coefficients are reduced by using a hybrid method of the discrete ordinate method and the Kubelka–Munk four-flux method. Using the image processing tools developed in-house, the porosity and pore size distribution (PSD) are obtained from SEM images for each coating. A numerical algorithm is used to convert the two-dimensional PSD into a three-dimensional PSD assuming that all pores are spheroid. The scattering coefficient is directly computed by the Mie theory based on the PSD. The new approach provides a predictive model of radiative properties based on the PSD, which is extracted from the coating cross-section images. Comparison of radiative properties obtained by the direct Mie theory computation and those obtained by the reduction from spectral measurement is made and discrepancy is discussed.  相似文献

The phase stability and thermophysical properties of InFeO3(ZnO)m (m = 2, 3, 4, 5) compounds were investigated, which are a general family of homologous layered compounds with general formula InFeO3(ZnO)m (m = 1–19). InFeO3(ZnO)m (m = 2, 3, 4, 5) ceramics were synthesized using cold pressing followed by solid-state sintering. They revealed an excellent thermal stability after annealing at 1450 °C for 48 h. No phase transformation occurred during heating to 1400 °C. InFeO3(ZnO)3 exhibited a thermal conductivity of 1.38 W m−1 K−1 at 1000 °C, which is about 30% lower than that of 8 wt.% yttria stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) thermal barrier coatings. The thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) of InFeO3(ZnO)m bulk ceramics were in a range of (10.97 ± 0.33) × 10−6 K−1 to (11.46 ± 0.35) × 10−6 K−1 at 900 °C, which are comparable to those of 8YSZ ceramics.  相似文献

Gadolinium zirconate (Gd2Zr2O7, GZO) as an advanced thermal barrier coating (TBC) material, has lower thermal conductivity, better phase stability, sintering resistance, and calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicates (CMAS) attack resistance than yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, 6-8 wt%) at temperatures above 1200°C. However, the drawbacks of GZO, such as the low fracture toughness and the formation of deleterious interphases with thermally grown alumina have to be considered for the application as TBC. Using atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) and suspension plasma spraying (SPS), double-layered YSZ/GZO TBCs, and triple-layered YSZ/GZO TBCs were manufactured. In thermal cycling tests, both multilayered TBCs showed a significant longer lifetime than conventional single-layered APS YSZ TBCs. The failure mechanism of TBCs in thermal cycling test was investigated. In addition, the CMAS attack resistance of both TBCs was also investigated in a modified burner rig facility. The triple-layered TBCs had an extremely long lifetime under CMAS attack. The failure mechanism of TBCs under CMAS attack and the CMAS infiltration mechanism were investigated and discussed.  相似文献

Because gas turbine engines must operate under increasingly harsh conditions, the degradation of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) by calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) is becoming an urgent issue. Mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) is considered a potential material for CMAS resistance; however, the performance of mullite in the presence of CMAS is still unclear. In this study, mullite and Al2O3–SiO2 were premixed with yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in different proportions, respectively. Porous ceramic pellets were used to conduct CMAS hot corrosion tests, and the penetration of molten CMAS and its mechanism were investigated. The thermal and mechanical properties of the samples were also characterized. It was found that the introduction of mullite and Al2O3–SiO2 mitigated the penetration of molten CMAS into the pellets owing to the formation of anorthite, especially at 45 wt% mullite/55 wt% YSZ. Compared with Al2O3–SiO2, mullite possesses a higher chemical activity and undergoes a faster reaction with CMAS, thus forming a sealing layer in a short time. Additionally, the thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, and fracture toughness of different samples were considered to guide the architectural design. Considering the CMAS corrosion resistance, thermal and mechanical performance of TBCs systematically, a TBC system with a multilayer architecture is proposed to provide a theoretical and practical basis for the design and optimization of the TBC microstructure.  相似文献

Calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) attack has been regarded as one of the significant failure mechanisms for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). In this study, CMAS corrosion behavior of BaLa2Ti3O10, a novel TBC material, is investigated at 1300?°C and 1350?°C for 0.5?h, 4?h, 12?h and 24?h. Results reveal that BaLa2Ti3O10 has high resistance to molten CMAS infiltration, attributable to the formation of a dense reaction layer. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscope, transmission electron microscope confirm that the layer consists of apatite, celsian and perovskite phases. With increased corrosion duration, the layer retains good phase stability and the thickness increases. The formation of corrosion products and the reaction layer are discussed according to a dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism and the optical basicity theory.  相似文献

Published thermodynamic approaches to calculate the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramic pH sensor potential are reviewed. A thermodynamic approach related to the Gibbs free energies of reactants and products is proposed to calculate the YSZ pH sensor potential, identify the YSZ pH sensors as primary pH sensors and to determine solution pH at high temperatures. YSZ thimbles have been used with a silver powder internal element prepared in the presence of dry air to generate a redox system, Ag|O2, sensitive to pH. YSZ (Ag|O2) pH sensors have been tested over a temperature range of 100 to 300 °C in lithiated boric acid solutions which are related to pressurized water reactor coolant chemistry. The test results have good agreement with the thermodynamic calculation from 100 to 300 °C. The thermodynamic calculation can be applied to a variety of YSZ pH sensor internal elements including Cu|Cu2O, Hg|HgO, Ag|Ag2O, Ag|O2, whereas earlier published calculations are not generally applicable.  相似文献

In the furnace cycle test, the growth of oxide film leads to the propagation and coalescence of multiple cracks near the interface, which should be responsible for the spallation of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). A TBC model with real interface morphology is created, and the near-interface large pore is retained. The purpose of this work is to clarify the mechanism of TBC spallation caused by successive initiation, propagation, and linkage of cracks near the interface during thermal cycle. The dynamic growth of thermally grown oxide (TGO) is carried out by applying a stress-free strain. The crack nucleation and arbitrary path propagation in YSZ and TGO are simulated by the extended finite element method (XFEM). The debonding along the YSZ/TGO/BC interface is evaluated using a surface-based cohesive behavior. The large-scale pore in YSZ near the interface can initiate a new crack. The ceramic crack can propagate to the YSZ/TGO interface, which will accelerate the interfacial damage and debonding. For the TGO/BC interface, the normal compressive stress and small shear stress at the valley hinder the further crack propagation. The growth of YSZ crack and the formation of through-TGO crack are the main causes of TBC delamination. The accelerated BC oxidation increases the lateral growth strain of TGO, which will promote crack propagation and coalescence. The optimization design proposed in this work can provide another option for developing TBC with high durability.  相似文献

Thermal insulation applications have long required materials with low thermal conductivity, and one example is yttria (Y2O3)-stabilized zirconia (ZrO2) (YSZ) as thermal barrier coatings used in gas turbine engines. Although porosity has been a route to the low thermal conductivity of YSZ coatings, nonporous and conformal coating of YSZ thin films with low thermal conductivity may find a great impact on various thermal insulation applications in nanostructured materials and nanoscale devices. Here, we report on measurements of the thermal conductivity of atomic layer deposition-grown, nonporous YSZ thin films of thickness down to 35 nm using time-domain thermoreflectance. We find that the measured thermal conductivities are 1.35–1.5 W m−1 K−1 and do not strongly vary with film thickness. Without any reduction in thermal conductivity associated with porosity, the conductivities we report approach the minimum, amorphous limit, 1.25 W m−1 K−1, predicted by the minimum thermal conductivity model.  相似文献

In this work we reported a new class of rare earth oxy-apatite, RE9.33(SiO4)6O2, with superior molten silicate resistant capability which shows promising application for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Three RE elements with different ion radius, i.e., Gd, Nd and La, were selected to prepare RE9.33(SiO4)6O2 bulk using co-precipitation and pressless-sintering. After 8-h CMAS attack at 1300 °C, the specimens exhibited a dense, continuous reprecipitated layer at RE-apatite/CMAS interface, which is predominantly controlled by a dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism distinguishing from the sacrificial material which is usually with reaction layer being formed. With an increase of ion radius, apatite is easier to crystallize in the melt.  相似文献

As one of promising thermal barrier coating (TBC) candidates, La2Ce2O7 (LC) has attracted increasing attention because of its low thermal conductivity and potential capability to be operated above 1250 °C. In this paper, the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the plasma-sprayed LC TBC with calcium–magnesium–alumina–silicate (CMAS) glassy deposits at 1250 °C were investigated. Due to chemical reaction between the CMAS deposits and LC coating, a dense sealing layer, mainly composed of Ca2(LaxCe1−x)8(SiO4)6O6−4x and CeO2, was formed on the coating after heat-treatment at 1250 °C and effectively prevented CMAS from further penetration. The interaction layer had the micro-hardness of ∼10–12 GPa, relatively harder than the LC coating.  相似文献
