ZrC-based composites were consolidated from ZrC and TiB2 powders by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique at 1685 °C and 1700 °C for 300 s under 40-50-60 MPa. Densification, crystalline phases, microstructure, mechanical properties and oxidation behavior of the composites were investigated. The sintered bodies were composed of a (Zr,Ti)C solid solution and a ZrB phase. The densification behaviors of the composites were improved by increasing the TiB2 content and applied pressure. The highest value of hardness, 21.64 GPa, was attained with the addition of 30 vol% TiB2. Oxidation tests were performed at 900 °C for 2 h and the formation of ZrO2, TiO2 and B2O3 phases were identified by using XRD.  相似文献

Square-shaped monolithic B4C and B4C-ZrB2 composites were produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method to investigate the effect of 5, 10, 15 vol% ZrB2 addition on the densification, mechanical and microstructural properties of boron carbide. The relative density of B4C increased with the increasing volume fraction of ZrB2 and density differences in different regions of the sample narrowed down. Homogeneous density distribution and microstructure were accomplished with the increasing holding time from 7 to 20 min for the B4C-15 vol% ZrB2 composites, and the highest overall relative density was achieved as 99.23%. The hardness and fracture toughness of composites were enhanced with the addition of ZrB2 compared to monolithic B4C. The enhancement in fracture toughness was observed due to the crack deflection, crack bridging and crack branching mechanisms. The B4C-15 vol% ZrB2 composite exhibited the combination of superior properties (hardness of 33.08 GPa, Vickers indentation fracture toughness of 3.82 MPa.m1/2).  相似文献

The effects of sintering temperature, heating rate, and holding time on the density and hardness of the spark plasma sintered B4C were investigated. Experimental results are compared with the predictions from computational thermodynamics. It is explained how the choice of sintering parameters can affect the mechanical properties of the sintered samples. The fundamental mechanisms of how the sintering parameters affect the properties of the sintered B4C are discussed with the sintering experiments and the predictions from the CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) approach. The effect of the number of graphite foil layers to pack the powder was also investigated. It is proposed that increasing the number of graphite foil layers may increase the driving force for the C-B2O3 reaction to proceed. Higher density and hardness is thus achieved with the removal of free carbon and B2O3 from the sample.  相似文献

Boron carbide composites with 10 vol.% TiB2 were prepared by reactive sintering of B4C, TiO2, and carbon black powder mixture at the temperature of 1800 °C, under a pressure of 70 MPa in a vacuum. The combined effects of electric current and in-situ reactions led to a significant overheating of the central part of the sample, while no overheating was observed for hot press and non-reactive SPS processes. A lower electrical resistivity of TiB2 produced a significant Joule heating of boron carbide, leading to its partial decomposition to form gaseous boron and graphene platelets. Homogenous, fully dense and graphene-free samples were obtained when employing an insulating Al2O3 paper during reactive SPS. A short dwell time (30 s after a degassing step of 6 min) and the uniform distribution of fine TiB2 grains were the main advantages of isolated SPS over the reactive hot press and SPS processes, respectively.  相似文献

The influence of spark plasma sintering (SPS) parameters (temperature, time, pressure) and the role of particle size on densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of commercial additive-free TiB2, SiC and composites thereof were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, the ultrasonic method and indentation. Three particle sizes of SiC and 2 of TiB2 were processed. An optimal cycle was found for TiB2 and SiC: 2000?°C, 3?min dwell time, and 100?MPa applied at 600?°C. The relative density of pure SiC increases linearly from 70% to 90% when the initial particle size decreases from 1.75?µm to 0.5?µm. Pure TiB2 was densified up to 87%. Using 2.5?wt% SiC in TiB2, the relative density increases to 97%. Young's modulus and the hardness of all samples were measured, with results discussed. The higher properties were obtained for additive-free TiB2–5%SiC with a relative density of 97% and with the Young's modulus and Vickers hardness values being close to 378?GPa and 23?GPa, respectively.  相似文献

Micromechanics modeling was performed to study the effects of thermal residual stress, weak interphases, TiB2 volume fraction and particle size on the mechanical responses and fracture behaviors of B4C-TiB2 composites. Experimentally observed fracture behaviors including micro-cracking and crack deflection were successfully captured. The weak interphases at B4C-TiB2 boundaries and the thermal residual stress induced during cooling by the large CTE mismatch between B4C and TiB2 were identified as two major factors to promote micro-cracking that caused the enhanced progressive failure behavior. Micro-cracking was enhanced with higher TiB2 volume fraction due to higher fraction of weak interphase and material affected by thermal residual stress. Meanwhile, micro-cracking behaviors exhibited limited change with varying TiB2 particle sizes. This modeling study successfully captured the main fracture behaviors and their trends by varying micro-structures of B4C-TiB2 composites and can potentially aid microstructure design of tougher B4C-TiB2 composites in the future.  相似文献

In this study, monolithic B4C and B4C-based ceramics incorporating FeNiCoCrMo dual-phase (FCC and BCC) high entropy alloys (HEAs) were produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effect of additives on the densification behavior, mechanical properties, microstructures, and phase evaluation of the samples were investigated. X-ray analysis confirmed the existence of FCC structured HEA and depletion of BCC structured HEA, after high-temperature reaction between B4C-HEAs. The addition of HEAs enhanced the densification behavior by liquid phase sintering. Furthermore, hardness and fracture toughness values of the samples increased with increasing HEAs content. Fracture toughness and hardness values for all composites were higher than the monolithic B4C. A combination of the highest density (∼99.22 %) and the best mechanical properties (32.3 GPa hardness and 4.53 MPa m1/2 fracture toughness) was achieved with 2.00 vol.% HEA addition.  相似文献

Micron-sized boron carbide (B4C) powders were subjected to spark plasma sintering (SPS) under temperature ranging from 1700 °C to 2100 °C for a soaking time of 5, 10 and 20 min and their densification kinetics was determined using a creep deformation model. The densification mechanism was interpreted on the basis of the stress exponent n and the apparent activation energy Qd from Harrenius plots. Results showed that within the temperature range 1700–2000 °C, creep deformation which was controlled by grain-boundary sliding or by interface reaction contributed to the densification mechanism at low effective stress regime (n = 2,Qd = 459.36 kJ/mol). While at temperature higher than 2000 °C or at high stress regime, the dominant mechanism appears to be the dislocation climb (n = 6.11).  相似文献

Three WC-Ti powder mixtures with 5, 10 and 15 wt% titanium were sintered by the spark plasma sintering technique. The microstructures and phase compositions of the samples were investigated by SEM, STEM, EBSD and XRD. The samples consisted of WC, W2C and a (W1-xTx)C phases when the starting amounts of titanium were 5 and 10 wt%. At the titanium content of 15 wt% the microstructure of the samples included W2C, (W1-xTx)C phases and elemental tungsten. The solubility of WC in TiC with the appearance of the (W1-xTx)C phase depended on the stoichiometry of the starting powder composition and sintering temperature. The results of EBSD phase mapping and the XRD investigation are in good agreement with the molar analysis. The best combination of hardness and fracture toughness was achieved with 5 wt% titanium. The appearance of elemental tungsten after sintering the WC-15Ti composition led to a significant reduction in hardness.  相似文献

In an attempt to develop the composition and properties of W2C-(W,Ti)C-TiC and WC-WC1-x-VC-V super hardmetals, spark plasma sintering (SPS) method was implemented. WC powders were mixed separately with 10?wt% Ti and 10?wt% V in a high energy mixer mill and sintering processes were performed at temperatures of 2150 and 2000?°C, respectively. XRD investigations revealed the formations of TiC and (Ti,W)C as the reaction products in WC-10?wt% Ti composite. Moreover, the interfacial reaction between WC and V led to the formation of WC1-x and VC compounds. A higher bending strength (613?±?25?MPa) and fracture toughness (4.1?±?0.58?MPa?m1/2) were obtained for WC-10?wt% V samples compared to WC-10?wt% Ti, While the WC-10?wt% Ti composite showed a higher value of hardness (3128?±?42 Vickers) in comparison to WC-10?wt% V (2632?±?39 Vickers), which can act as a super hard cermet.  相似文献

Bulk titanium diboride–niobium diboride ceramic composites were consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1950°C. SPS resulted in dense specimens with a density exceeding 98% of the theoretical density and a multimodal grain size ranging from 1 to 10 μm. During the SPS consolidation, the pressure was applied and released at 1950 and 1250°C, respectively. This allowed obtaining a two-phase composite consisting of TiB2 and NbB2. For these ceramics composites, we evaluated the flexural strength and fracture toughness and room and elevated temperatures. Room-temperature strength of thus produced bulks was between 300 and 330 MPa, at 1200°C or 1600°C an increase in strength up to 400 MPa was observed. Microstructure after flexure at elevated temperatures revealed the appearance of the needle-shape subgrains of NbB2, an evidence for ongoing plastic deformation. TiB2–NbB2 composites had elastic loading stress curves at 1600°C, and at 1800°C fractured in the plastic manner, and strength was ranged from 300 to 450 MPa. These data were compared with a specimen where a (Ti,Nb)B2 solid solution was formed during SPS to explain the behavior of TiB2–NbB2 ceramic composites at elevated temperatures.  相似文献

Abstract

Abstract

Highly densified Al2O3-TiC-Ti3SiC2 composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering technique and subsequently characterised. From fracture surface observation, it is found that Al2O3 is 0·2-0·4?μm, TiC is 1-1·5?μm and Ti3SiC2 is 1·5-5?μm in grain size. With the increase in Ti3SiC2 volume contents, Vickers hardness of the composites decreases because of the low hardness of monolithic Ti3SiC2. The fracture toughness rises remarkably when the contents of Ti3SiC2 increase, which is attributed to the pullout and microplastic deformation of Ti3SiC2 grains. At the same time, the flexural strength of the composites shows a considerable improvement as well. The electrical conductivity rises significantly as the Ti3SiC2 contents increase because of the formation of Ti3SiC2 network and the increase in conductive phase contents.  相似文献

Monolithic B4C ceramics and B4C–CNT composites were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The influence of particle size, heating rate, and CNT addition on sintering behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties were studied. Two different B4C powders were used to examine the effect of particle size. The effect of heating rate on monolithic B4C was investigated by applying three different heating rates (75, 150 and 225 °C/min). Moreover, in order to evaluate the effect of CNT addition, B4C–CNT (0.5–3 mass%) composites were also produced. Fully dense monolithic B4C ceramics were obtained by using heating rate of 75 °C/min. Vickers hardness value increased with increasing CNT content, and B4C–CNT composite with 3 mass% CNTs had the highest hardness value of 32.8 GPa. Addition of CNTs and increase in heating rate had a positive effect on the fracture toughness and the highest fracture toughness value, 5.9 MPa m1/2, was achieved in composite with 3 mass% CNTs.  相似文献

B4C based ceramics were fabricated with different Fe3Al contents as sintering aids by spark plasma sintering at relatively low temperature (1700 °C) in vacuum by applying 50 MPa pressure and held at 1700 °C for 5 min. The effect of Fe3Al additions (from 0 to 9 wt%) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of B4C has been studied. The composition and microstructure of as-prepared samples were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) equipped with WDS (wavelength dispersive spectrometry) and EDS. The mixtures of B4C and Fe3Al underwent a major reaction in which the metal borides and B4C were encountered as major crystallographic phases. The sample with 7 wt% of Fe3Al as a sintering aid was found to have 32.46 GPa Vickers hardness, 483.40 MPa flexural strength, and 4.1 MPa m1/2 fracture toughness which is higher than that of pure B4C.  相似文献

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) has become a popular technique for the densification of covalent ceramics. The present investigation is focused on the static mechanical properties and dynamic compressive behavior of SPS consolidated boron carbide powder without any sintering additives. Fully dense boron carbide bodies were obtained by a short high temperature SPS treatment. The mechanical properties of the SPS-processed material, namely hardness (32 GPa), Young modulus (470 GPa), fracture toughness KC (3.9–4.9 MPa m0.5), flexural strength (430 MPa) and Hugoniot elastic limit (17–19 GPa) are close or even better than those of hot-pressed boron carbide.  相似文献

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a powerful technique to produce fine grain dense ferrite at low temperature. This work was undertaken to study the effect of sintering temperature on the densification, microstructures and magnetic properties of magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4). MgFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized via sol–gel self-combustion method. The powders were pressed into pellets which were sintered by spark plasma sintering at 700–900 °C for 5 min under 40 MPa. A densification of 95% of the theoretical density of Mg ferrite was achieved in the spark plasma sintered (SPSed) ceramics. The density, grain size and saturation magnetization of SPSed ceramics were found to increase with an increase in sintering temperature. Infrared (IR) spectra exhibit two important vibration bands of tetrahedral and octahedral metal-oxygen sites. The investigations of microstructures and magnetic properties reveal that the unique sintering mechanism in the SPS process is responsible for the enhancement of magnetic properties of SPSed compacts.  相似文献

The addition effect of different ceramic particles such as TiB2, TiN and nano-Si3N4 on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiCN-WC-Co-Cr3C2 based cermets, which are prepared by spark plasma sintering, was studied. Microstructural characterization of the cermets was done by scanning electron microscope. X-ray diffraction was performed to study the crystal structures. Mechanical properties such as hardness and fracture toughness were measured for the different developed cermets. The hardness and fracture toughness of the TiCN-WC-Co-Cr3C2 cermets without TiN, TiB2, and nano-Si3N4 were 8.4 GPa and 3.4 MPa m1/2, respectively. It was found that 5 wt% TiB2 addition alone improved the corresponding hardness and fracture toughness to 19.2 GPa and 6.9 MPa m1/2, respectively. The addition of 5 wt% TiN, improved the hardness and fracture toughness to 16.7 GPa and 6.9 MPa m1/2, respectively. With the combination of 5 wt% TiN and 5 wt% TiB2, the hardness and fracture toughness were improved to 15.5 GPa and 6.6 MPa m1/2, respectively. But, the addition of 5 wt% Si3N4 showed a balanced improvement in both hardness (17.6 GPa) and toughness (6.9 MPa m1/2). Fracture toughness did not change much for all the above cermets with different ceramic inclusions.  相似文献

The microscopic densification mechanisms of metallic systems (TiAl, Ag-Zn) by spark plasma sintering (SPS) have been studied by simulations and experiments. Finite element simulations showed that, despite very high current densities at the necks between metallic powder particles (≈5 × 104 A/cm2), only very limited Joule overheating can be expected at these locations (<1°C), because of very fast heat diffusion. The microscopic plasticity mechanisms under these high electric currents have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. For this purpose, thin foils have been extracted by focused ion beam at the necks between TiAl powder particles. This is the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that microscopic plasticity mechanisms at the necks between powder particles are investigated by TEM during densification of a metallic powder. Dislocation glide and climb mechanisms were identified, followed by recovery and recrystallization. The elementary mechanism kinetically controlling these phenomena is proposed to be bulk diffusion of Al, which activation energy (360 kJ/mol) is close to the activation energy measured for densification (308 ± 20 kJ/mol). Comparisons of densification kinetics by SPS (≈60-110 A/cm2) and by hot pressing (0 A/cm2) showed no influence of current on these mechanisms. Finally, reaction experiments in the Ag-Zn system did not show any influence of very high currents (>1000 A/cm2) on diffusion kinetics. Consequently, densification by SPS occurs by classical mechanisms not affected by the current.  相似文献

A comparative study has been carried out on densification, microstructure, and creep with oxide-scale formation in ZrB2-20 vol.% SiC-(7, 10 or 14 vol.%) LaB6 composite containing B4C and C as additives, and prepared by spark plasma sintering at 1800 °C under 70 MPa ram pressure. Addition of LaB6 has promoted densification of composites by scavenging oxygen impurity, thereby increasing their hardness. Constant load compressive creep tests at 1300 °C under 47 and 78 MPa stresses have shown the lowest creep rate in the 10 vol.% LaB6 composite. The stress exponents obtained for composites having 10 vol.% LaB6 (~1.3 ± 0.1) and 14 vol.% LaB6 (~2.6 ± 0.2) suggest respectively, grain boundary diffusion with intergranular glassy phase formation and dislocation glide as operating mechanisms. Intergranular cracking caused by grain boundary sliding appears as the damage mechanism. Oxide scales formed during creep exhibit greater thickness and defect concentration than those by isothermal exposure at 1300 °C within similar duration.  相似文献

Different stoichiometries of zirconium oxycarbide (ZrCxOy) powders were synthesised by carboreduction to approach the role of the chemical composition on the densification behaviour during spark plasma sintering and on the mechanical properties. Chemical analyses were performed using complementary methods to determine the actual stoichiometry and homogeneity of powders. Evolution of relative density during SPS treatment and microstructure observations by SEM showed that oxygen and vacancy contents would enhance the densification kinetics by promoting the lattice diffusion of limiting species. A study of mechanical properties of SPS sintered specimens has highlighted their significant dependence on the oxycarbide stoichiometry, especially at high temperature.  相似文献
