ABSTRACT

Achieving sustainable development in the built environment requires the human resource with the right sustainability knowledge and skills to respond to the challenge facing the construction industry. It is argued that educational institutions have a key role to play in educating future generations with the right sustainability knowledge and skills. This research explores the relevance of sustainability literacy to postgraduate students enrolled in a quantity surveying (QS) course at the London South Bank University. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach that examines students’ perspective on the importance of sustainability literacy and how it has been integrated in the program through interview with 15 students followed by a survey with 98 part-time and full-time students enrolled on the course. The results revealed that students value sustainability knowledge and skills. Most students believe that they need to be sustainability literate to be competitive in the job market. More than half of the students (53%) argued that sustainability literacy was delivered sometimes with a satisfaction rate of 45%, which shows that students are not really happy with how sustainability literacy has been embedded in the course and argues that more needs to be done to fully integrate sustainability literacy in the program.  相似文献

The use of building information modeling (BIM) is well established in architecture, engineering and construction. However, previous studies note a lack of BIM expertise in academia, leading to slow adoption and limited knowledge on which to base BIM-related content. To improve course development, it is important to understand students’ perceptions of BIM-related subject matter. This study exposed estimating students (= 214) to a model-based quantity takeoff (QTO) tutorial using Revit. Students’ perceptions of a Revit-based BIM’s usefulness for easily providing reliable and accurate material quantities were measured using a pre-test, tutorial and post-test design. Results revealed significant differences in students’ mean levels of agreement that an accurate QTO is completed for an estimator with the click of a button when a design team generated BIM model is available. Results also revealed significant differences in students’ level of agreement that a Revit-based BIM makes performing QTO by hand obsolete. This study provides educators’ insight into students’ perceptions of BIM use in QTO. Understanding student perceptions is paramount for construction management educators when designing a course and attempting to convey the value of foundational estimating skills while acknowledging the existence of more technologically advance estimating methods. Well-established tests that measure reasoning abilities have long been found to be predictive of success in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. Instructors can use these tests for predicting a student’s academic achievement and informing instruction. This study investigated the relationship of scores on the Test of Logical Thinking (TOLT) with multiple achievement measures in a junior level, collegiate construction surveying course. The TOLT was administered to 242 construction science students. The scores were found to be significantly correlated with the points earned on the exams and with the total points earned for the course. Based on these findings, instructors, administrators, and researchers would benefit by using the TOLT for assessing student reasoning abilities. This assessment tool could also assist them in understanding their students’ logical thinking skills, which would encourage the instructor to modify their instructional design strategies to match or enhance their students’ problem-solving ability.  相似文献

Despite the rapid growth of corporate volunteering in construction, there has been very little research in this area, particularly from a recipient’s perspective. To address this gap in knowledge, data were collected using surveys, reflective diaries, workbooks and a progress web, from 103 school pupils participating in one of the UK’s largest schools-based construction industry corporate volunteering programmes. The results show that corporate volunteering programmes which partner construction industry professionals with school students in a work-related activity-based learning environment can have a significant impact on student construction industry knowledge, perceptions, career choices, aspirations and employability skills. This is particularly the case for female students and for students whose learning styles do not align with traditional classroom-based pedagogies. It is recommended that more research is needed to classify and understand the different types of volunteering programmes that operate in the construction sector across multiple cohort groups, the factors that determine success and failure and the overall impact on the students and the wider community in the long term as well as the short term. There is also a need for more research into what it means for the companies involved and for the staff who volunteer.  相似文献
