The mechanical strengths of neat low‐density polyethylene (LDPE), a blend of LDPE with linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE), and a composite of LDPE with wood flour (wood/LDPE) were investigated in molten and solidified states under tensile deformation. The results are discussed in terms of the effects of LLDPE and wood contents, roller speed, and volumetric flow rate. In LLDPE/LDPE blends, incorporating LLDPE from 0 to 30 wt% into LDPE caused a slight increase in drawdown force, a larger fluctuation in drawdown force, and a reduction of maximum roller speed to failure. The mechanical properties of the solidified LLDPE/LDPE corresponded to those of the molten LLDPE/LDPE with regard to the effect of LLDPE content. For wood/LDPE composites, increasing the wood flour content in molten LDPE caused considerable reductions in drawdown time and maximum roller speed to failure. The drawdown force increased with increasing wood flour up to 10 wt% before it decreased at the wood loading of 20 wt%. A number of voids and pores on the extrudate surfaces became obvious for the composites with 20 wt% of wood content. Increasing wood content enhanced the tensile modulus for the solidified LDPE but decreased its tensile strength. Unlike those of LLDPE/LDPE blends, the changes in tensile modulus and strength of solidified wood/LDPE composites with wood content did not correspond to those of the molten composites. In all cases, the drawdown force increased with increasing roller speed. The effect of volumetric flow rate from the extruder on the mechanical strengths of the solidified blends was more pronounced than on those of the molten ones. J. VINYL ADDIT. In the present work, we report the effect of low-temperature plasma treatment on thermal, mechanical, and biodegradable properties of polymer composite blown films prepared from carp fish scale powder (CFSP) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). The CFSP was melt compounded with LLDPE using a filament extruder to prepare 1, 2, and 3 wt.% of CFSP in LLDPE polymer composite filaments. These filaments were further pelletized and extruded into blown films. The blown films extruded with 1, 2, and 3 wt.% of CFSP in LLDPE were tested for thermal and mechanical properties. It was observed that the tensile strength decreased with the increased loading content of CFSP, and 1% CFSP/LLDPE exhibited the highest tensile strength. To study the effect of low-temperature plasma treatment, 1% CFSP/LLDP polymer composite with high tensile strength was plasma treated with O2 and SF6 gas before blow film extrusion. The 1% CFSP/LLDPE/SF6-extruded blown films showed increased thermal decomposition, crystallinity, tensile strength, and modulus. This may be due to the effect of crosslinking by the plasma treatment. The maximum thermal decomposition rate, crystallinity %, tensile strength, and modulus obtained for 1% CFSP/LLDPE/SF6 film were 500.02°C, 35.79, 6.32 MPa, and 0.023 GPa, respectively. Furthermore, the biodegradability study on CFSP/LLDPE films buried in natural soil for 90 days was analyzed using x-ray fluorescence. The study showed an increase in phosphorus and calcium mass percent in the soil. This is due to the decomposition of the hydroxyapatite present in the CFSP/LLDPE biocomposite.

A simple method for the preparation of magnetic nanocomposites consisting of cobalt ferrite (CF; CoFe2O4) nanoparticles, polybenzoxazine (PB), linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE), and linear low‐density polyethylene‐g‐maleic anhydride (LgM) is described. The composites were prepared by the formation of benzoxazine (BA)–CF nanopowders followed by melt blending with LLDPE and the thermal curing of BA. The composites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, universal testing machine measurement, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The composites consisting of LLDPE, PB, and LgM (47.5L–47.5PB–5LgM) exhibited a higher tensile strength (23.82 MPa) than pure LLDPE and a greater elongation at break (6.11%) than pure PB. The tensile strength of the composites decreased from 19.92 to 18.55 MPa with increasing CF loading (from 14.25 to 33.25 wt %). The saturation magnetization of the composites containing 33.25 wt % CF was 18.28 emu/g, and it decreased with decreasing amount of CF in the composite. The composite films exhibited mechanical flexibility and magnetic properties. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.

In this study, 65 wt% aligned untreated long hemp fibre/epoxy (AUL) and aligned alkali treated long hemp fibre/epoxy (AAL) composites cured at 70°C using compression moulding were subjected to accelerated weathering using an accelerated weathering chamber with UV-irradiation and water spray at 50°C for four different time periods (250, 500, 750 and 1000 h). After accelerated weathering, tensile strength (TS), flexural strength, Young's modulus (YM), flexural modulus and fracture toughness (K Ic) were found to decrease and impact energy (IE) was found to increase for both AUL and AAL composites. AUL composite had greater overall reduction in mechanical properties than that for AAL composite upon exposure to accelerated weathering environment. FTIR, TGA and WAXRD analyses of the accelerated weathered composites support the results of the deterioration of mechanical properties upon exposure to accelerated weathering environment.

By means of in situ graft method, polypropylene (PP)‐wrapped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite were prepared. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) results showed that there was covalent linkage between PP and CNTs via maleic anhydride (MAH) grafting. Owing to the uniform dispersion of CNTs and covalent adhesion between PP and CNTs, the tensile strength of PP‐wrapped CNTs composite was higher than that for neat PP by 110%, and a 74% increase as compared to the CNTs/PP (with the same CNTs content) composite. The further test showed a strong mechanical behavior with up to 113% increase in Young's modulus of the neat PP. Based on the uniform dispersion of CNTs, the electrical conductivity of PP‐wrapped CNTs composite increased sharply by up to seven orders of magnitude with 4 wt % CNT fillers. As a result, the volume resistivity was decreased with increase in the CNT content that could be governed in a percolation‐like power law with a relatively low percolation threshold. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. LDPE thermoplastic composites prepared using 1–4 wt% of conventional filler‐grade ZnO and nanoscale ZnO were investigated to determine whether the presence of either grade of filler affected the weatherability of the composite material. Outdoor exposure (natural weathering) studies and accelerated weathering was performed and tensile properties were used to assess the weather‐induced damage. Weatherability under outdoor exposure and under laboratory‐ accelerated conditions, primarily quantified using tensile properties, were found to be the same for composites with conventional and nanoscale ZnO filler. Wood–plastic lumber is promoted as a low‐maintenance high‐durability product. When exposed to accelerated weathering, however, wood–plastic composites may experience a color change and/or loss in mechanical properties. Different methods of manufacturing wood–plastic composites lead to different surface characteristics, which can influence weathering. In this study, 50% wood–flour‐filled high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composite samples were injection molded, extruded, or extruded and then planed, to remove the manufacturing surface characteristics. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to chemically show the difference in surface components. The samples were weathered in a xenon‐arc weathering apparatus for 1000, 2000, and 3000 h and analyzed for color fade and loss of flexural modulus of elasticity and strength. Final color (lightness) after weathering was not dependent on the manufacturing method. However, the manufacturing method was related to mechanical property loss caused by weathering. Composites with more wood component at the surface (i.e., planed samples) experienced a larger percentage of total loss in flexural modulus of elasticity and strength after weathering. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used to improve the tensile properties of an epoxy resin and its continuous carbon fiber (CF) reinforced composites. Micrography picture showed that CNTs has been well incorporated into the composites, and made the fracture cross section more rougher through sharing the stress. For the CNT/epoxy composite, the tensile strength and modulus both increased upon the CNT addition, and at a CNT volume concentration of 2.0%, the maximum enhancements in the tensile strength and modulus were achieved as 26.7% and 21.5%, respectively. For the CNT‐CF/epoxy composite, the maximum enhancement in tensile strength was achieved as 11.6% at a CNT volume concentration of 1.0% and then decreased with the further increase of the CNT addition, but the tensile modulus increased monotonically upon the CNT addition. A kind of LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene)/LDPE (low density polyethylene) thin film for farm applications was subjected to accelerated and natural weathering. Carbonyl group, melting point, tensile elastic modulus, and high‐temperature shearing modulus of weathered films were investigated as function of weathering time. Two kinds of carbonyl index, I1 and I2, which result from infrared spectroscopy (IR) spectra of the weathered films, were defined to characterize the weathering extent of the LLDPE/LDPE thin film. Based on I1 and I2, a correlation is made between the artificial and natural weathering of the film: 1 h of the artificial weathering is equivalent to about 10.73 h of the natural weathering. The difference between the accelerated weathering and the natural weathering was also discussed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 88: 12–16, 2003  相似文献

Five blends of polycarbonate (PC) with linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) were studied. Characterization of the blends was made by means of rheological measurements and domain morphology determined by SEM microscopy. A fine dispersion was obtained for the 25/75 PC/LLDPE. The blends were then oriented, LLDPE and 25/75 PC/LLDPE at room temperature, and the others at 165°C. For the hot drawn blends (50/50 and 75/25 PC/LLDPE), a significant increase in tensile strength and elongation at break is observed. For the room temperature drawn samples, modulus and tensile strength values increase whereas elongation at break decreases. This is explained in terms of morphological and molecular orientation effects. Comparison of the experiments to the predictions of different models for the modulus shows a good agreement for unoriented blends. However, for oriented samples, important discrepancies are observed, suggesting that the morphology and orientation are important factors in predicting the modulus of these blends. A model which takes into account these factors is proposed and a good fit of the modulus is obtained.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/gelatin composite fibers containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) had been prepared by wet‐spinning method. A remarkable increase of tensile strength of the PVA/gelatin fibers was achieved by adding small amount of CNT. The mechanism of reinforcement has been studied using a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), 2D wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (2D‐WAXD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM showed a decreased gelatin domain size by adding CNTs, suggesting a possible compatibilization effect between PVA and gelatin. On the other hand, an increased crystallinity and degree of orientation of PVA/gelatin fibers has been observed by adding CNTs. Thus, the increased compatibilization, crystallinity and degree of orientation in PVA/gelatin/CNTs composite fibers should be the reasons for the observed increase of mechanical properties. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends were made from linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) and various amounts of soya powder. The soya powder content was varied from 5 to 20 wt%. Polyethylene‐g‐(maleic anhydride) (PE‐g‐MA) was used as a compatibilizer. Tensile strength and elongation at break (EB) decreased with increasing soya powder content. However, Young's modulus increased with the incorporation of soya powder. The addition of PE‐g‐MA as a compatibilizer increased the tensile strength, EB, and modulus of the blends. The interfacial adhesion between soya powder and LLDPE was improved by the incorporation of PE‐g‐MA, as demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy. Increasing the content of soya powder reduced the crystallinity of the LLDPE phase. The addition of PE‐g‐MA had no significant effect on melting temperature, but the degree of crystallinity of the LLDPE was increased. The thermal stability of the blends was determined by using thermogravimetric analysis. Thermal stability decreased with increasing soya powder loading. However, the addition of PE‐g‐MA slightly increased the thermal stability of LLDPE/(soya powder) blends. J. VINYL ADDIT. TECHNOL., 2009. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers

Wood–plastic lumber is promoted as a low‐maintenance high‐durability product. When exposed to accelerated weathering, however, wood–plastic composites may experience a color change and loss in mechanical properties. Differences in weathering cycle and composite surface characteristics can affect the rate and amount of change caused by weathering. In this study, 50% wood flour filled high‐density polyethylene composite samples were injection molded, extruded, or extruded and then planed to remove the manufacturing surface characteristics. Composites were exposed to two accelerated weathering cycles in a xenon arc weathering apparatus. This apparatus exposed the samples to xenon arc radiation, which is a combination of UV, visible, and IR radiation that is similar to solar radiation. Composites were exposed to radiation with or without water spray. After exposure to radiation and water spray, composites with more wood component at the surface (i.e., planed samples) experienced a larger percentage of total loss in flexural modulus of elasticity and strength after weathering compared with the other composites. Composites exposed to radiation only did not experience as much change in properties as those exposed to radiation with water spray. The results of this study demonstrate that exposing wood–plastic composites to water spray in combination with radiation is more severe than exposing wood–plastic composites to radiation only. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), as reinforcing agent, were blended with linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE), then molded by hot compression molding to prepare LLDPE/MWCNTs composites. Tensile tests indicate that the strength, Young's modulus, and toughness are all improved for LLDPE/MWCNTs composites containing 1 and 3 wt % MWCNTs. Compared with LLDPE, the Young's modulus of LLDPE/MWCNTs composites rises from 144.8 to 270.8 MPa at 1 wt % MWCNTs content. At the same time, increases of 18.5% in tensile strength and 16.6% in yield strength are achieved. Additionally, its toughness is enhanced by 26.7% than that of LLDPE. Microstructure characterizations, including differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy were performed to investigate the variations of microstructure and further to establish the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. Homogeneous dispersion of MWCNTs, network formation, and development of an oriented nanohybrid shish‐kebab structure contribute to the enhanced strength and toughness. The increased crystallinity is beneficial to the reinforcement and increased modulus. Additionally, the thermal stability of the LLDPE/MWCNTs composites is enhanced as well. This work suggests a promising routine to optimize polymer/MWCNTs composites by tailoring the structural development. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 45525.

The tensile tests of three‐dimensional (3Dim) and four‐directional (4Dir) carbon fiber braided/epoxy resin composites and carbon fiber woven plain fabric laminated/epoxy composites after heat accelerated aging at 150 and 180°C for 60, 120, and 180 h were carried out respectively. The reason of the changes of tensile property of these composites after different aging period of time at different high temperature was explained. The results of two‐way ANOVA analyzing indicate that the aging time has a significant effect on tensile strength of these composites. With the increase of accelerated aging period of time at high temperature, the tensile strengths of these composite samples decreased compared with that of composite samples without aging. However the decrease of tensile strength of 3Dim and 4Dir braided composites is less than that of laminated composites. One of the reasons is after aging for a long time at high temperature, the resin is damaged and becomes brittle which make the bonding force between fiber and resin decrease. Another reason is the structure of reinforcement of composites. After aging, the structure of 3Dim and 4Dir braided/epoxy resin composites still keeps the integrity which makes the 3Dim and 4Dir composites have less tensile performance degradation (3Dim and 4 Dir: three‐dimensional and four‐directional). Linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blends were prepared by melt mixing. LLDPE/PVA weight ratios between 90/10 and 40/60 were studied. The effects of the silane coupling agent 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate on processability, gel fraction, component interaction, compatibility, thermal stability, tensile properties, and morphology of the LLDPE/PVA blends were investigated. The results indicated that the presence of silane increased the equilibrium torque of the LLDPE/PVA blends because of crosslinking and better compatibility between LLDPE and PVA. The degree of crosslinking was quantified by gel fraction measurements, and crosslinking was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis. The melting temperature depression of PVA and LLDPE further suggested the formation of crosslinks. The thermal stability and tensile properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus of the blends also increased with the incorporation of silane. Improved compatibility between LLDPE and PVA in the blends with silane was demonstrated by the interconnected rough material observed in scanning electron microscopy images that differed from the morphology of the LLDPE/PVA blends without silane. Ultraviolet weathering performance of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filled with different concentrations of wood flour was studied. Extruded PVC/wood‐flour composite samples were subjected to cyclic ultraviolet lamps/condensation exposures and assessed over a total of 400 and 2600 hours. Each assessment consisted of DRIFTFTIR and XPS collections, contact angle measurement, color measurement, and tensile property testing. The experimental results indicated that wood flours are effective chromophore materials since their incorporation into a rigid PVC matrix accelerated the degradation of the polymeric matrix. Photodegradation converted unfilled PVC samples to a colored material of lower extensibility. Although composite samples exhibited greater discoloration than unfilled PVC samples, they retained all their original strength and stiffness properties even after 2600 hours of cyclic UV irradiation/condensation exposures.

Improvements in carbon nanotube (CNT) dispersion and subsequent mechanical properties of CNT/poly(phenylsulfone) (PPSF) composites were obtained by applying the supercritical CO2 (scCO2)‐aided melt‐blending technique that has been used in our laboratory for nanoclay/polymer composite preparation. The preparation process relied on rapid expansion of the CNTs followed by melt blending using a single‐screw extruder. Scanning electronic microscopy results revealed that the CNTs exposed to scCO2 at certain pressures, temperatures, exposure time, and depressurization rates have a more dispersed structure. Microscopy results showed improved CNT dispersion in the polymer matrix and more uniform networks formed with the use of scCO2, which indicated that CO2‐expanded CNTs are easier to disperse into the polymer matrix during the blending procedure. The CNT/PPSF composites prepared with scCO2‐aided melt blending and conventional melt blending showed similar tensile strength and elongation at break. The Young's modulus of the composite prepared by means of conventional direct melt blending failed to increase beyond the addition of 1 wt% CNT, but the scCO2‐aided melt‐blending method provided continuous improvements in Young's modulus up to the addition of 7 wt% CNT.
