Recent trends have led to the expanded use of digital computers in large complex system applications. The major burden of meeting the requirements for these systems has fallen on the flexibility of software. This has placed many demands on all areas associated with digital systems development. A significant impact has been on the development of software personnel required to develop and manage these complex systems. The purpose of this paper is to present a three level program for software education of executives, managers, and engineers which is being offered at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). The needs and approaches in satisfying software engineering education requirements are presented. A twelve-hour, four-week course in electrical engineering for freshman students is described. The goals of the course are chosen so as to best help freshman engineering students to decide whether or not they should elect to enter the electrical engineering department in their sophomore year. In view of the shortness of time available in which to get this message across, a great deal of thought was put into the design of the course including the use of a live TV system that displays experimental observations, as they happen, to a large class.  相似文献

Modern electronic system design makes extensive use of programmable architectures, and requires designers to consider hardware and software jointly in their design. A senior-level course named Hardware/Software Codesign provides a practical introduction to these complex system design issues. The challenge is to bring a subject, which is traditionally covered as a graduate-level course, to senior undergraduate students without overly narrowing down the scope, and without turning the course into an ad-hoc design project. The course combines an incremental, structured overview of hardware/software codesign with practical assignments that emphasize key concepts. This paper reviews the motivations for this course, the curriculum, the lab materials and tools used, and the results of the first offering of the course in fall 2006.   相似文献

An engineering course for freshmen is described. The course begins with a discussion of the philosophy of preliminary design and then moves to certain "macroconcepts" used in the design process: These are: economics, energy, thermodynamics, information, human factors, and optimization. An important feature of the course is a weekly three-hour design laboratory in which the principles covered in lecture are applied to realistic engineering problems.  相似文献

Several tools are marketed to the educational community for plagiarism detection and prevention. This article briefly contrasts the performance of two leading tools, TurnItIn and MyDropBox, in detecting submissions that were obviously plagiarized from articles published in IEEE journals. Both tools performed poorly because they do not compare submitted writings to publications in the IEEE database. Moreover, these tools do not cover the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) database or several others important for scholarly work in software engineering. Reports from these tools suggesting that a submission has ldquopassedrdquo can encourage false confidence in the integrity of a submitted writing. Additionally, students can submit drafts to determine the extent to which these tools detect plagiarism in their work. Because the tool samples the engineering professional literature narrowly, the student who chooses to plagiarize can use this tool to determine what plagiarism will be invisible to the faculty member. An appearance of successful plagiarism prevention may in fact reflect better training of students to avoid plagiarism detection.  相似文献

The Software Hut (a small software house) is a software engineering project in the form of a game, designed and used by J. J. Horning and D. B. Wortman at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ont., Canada. An Assessment of the ECTS in Software Engineering: A Teaching Experience   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Spain is currently implementing the regulatory modifications promulgated by the Declaration of Bologna, which should result in the updating of the structure of university degrees, and the inclusion of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) methodology. In some Spanish universities, the experimental adoption of this methodology has been encouraged, with the aim of gaining experience which could be extrapolated to other qualifications and subjects when this system becomes compulsory, which is expected to be in 2008. This paper examines the teaching methodologies that follow the experimental introduction of the ECTS in the Technical Software Engineering degree course taught at the Higher Technical College of the University of Cordoba, Spain. Based on data gathered in three specific subjects during the first and third years, this paper defines the teaching strategies implemented in order to increase the active role of students during their learning. The utility of e-learning tools in this type of teaching is discussed and the academic results are compared with results obtained in previous years using more traditional teaching methodologies.   相似文献

An experimental teaching strategy was employed in a three-quarter introductory Electrical Engineering course. The system was designed to combine the best features of PSI (Proctoral System of Instruction, also known as the Keller Method) and the conventional system, in the context of engineering education. The most important feature is that it allows students to master every assigned problem and rewards them for that mastery. It was found that a very high percentage of students will take advantage of this opportunity. The percentage of students successfully completing the course was high-73%. The experiment was an exploratory one; no control group was employed. Therefore, the net pedagogical impact is not known. But it is known that the system is highly liked by students and is very good for morale.  相似文献

The value of a studio course in undergraduate software engineering programs is well documented. What is not as well understood is how to provide a relevant studio experience to working, seasoned professional software engineers as part of a Master's of Software Engineering (MSE) degree program. The challenge is that students' experiential diversity complicates the selection of projects that address different students' needs. Further, when the studio experience is compressed into 14 weeks, significant challenges are presented in controlling the process environment while providing a realistic and meaningful learning experience for part-time students. The student consumerism movement along with rapidly changing professional demands and opportunities are forces which will require engineering departments or colleges to inform new students more fully of their educational programs and career opportunities. The introductory engineering course is a natural place to provide such a service and yet if the current literature on engineering education and college catalogs is any gauge, this course is under-utilized and ineffectively organized. This paper discusses ECE 0100, an Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering, which is currently being offered at Wayne State University. This course incorporates the educational philosophy and assumptions advocated by humanistic psychology and shows that such an approach naturally satisfies the information requirements created by student consumerism and changing professionsal needs.  相似文献

In the fall 1982 semester, engineering report writing was integrated into the structure of a junior-level electrical engineering course at Howard University. The required homework consisted of engineering reports instead of the traditional textbook problem sets. A follow-up analysis of grades on examinations, on reports, and in later courses showed that 1) student understanding of engineering subject matter was not compromised by the course structure; 2) writing skills improved over the course of the semester; and 3) the correlation of student writing skills to problem solving skills was approximately 0.5.  相似文献
