Biopsy is one of the most commonly used modality to identify breast cancer in women, where tissue is removed and studied by the pathologist under the microscope to look for abnormalities in tissue. This technique can be time-consuming, error-prone, and provides variable results depending on the expertise level of the pathologist. An automated and efficient approach not only aids in the diagnosis of breast cancer but also reduces human effort. In this paper, we develop an automated approach for the diagnosis of breast cancer tumors using histopathological images. In the proposed approach, we design a residual learning-based 152-layered convolutional neural network, named as ResHist for breast cancer histopathological image classification. ResHist model learns rich and discriminative features from the histopathological images and classifies histopathological images into benign and malignant classes. In addition, to enhance the performance of the developed model, we design a data augmentation technique, which is based on stain normalization, image patches generation, and affine transformation. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated on publicly available BreaKHis dataset. The proposed ResHist model achieves an accuracy of 84.34% and an F1-score of 90.49% for the classification of histopathological images. Also, this approach achieves an accuracy of 92.52% and F1-score of 93.45% when data augmentation is employed. The proposed approach outperforms the existing methodologies in the classification of benign and malignant histopathological images. Furthermore, our experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our approach over the pre-trained networks, namely AlexNet, VGG16, VGG19, GoogleNet, Inception-v3, ResNet50, and ResNet152 for the classification of histopathological images.  相似文献

One of the most common kinds of cancer is breast cancer. The early detection of it may help lower its overall rates of mortality. In this paper, we robustly propose a novel approach for detecting and classifying breast cancer regions in thermal images. The proposed approach starts with data preprocessing the input images and segmenting the significant regions of interest. In addition, to properly train the machine learning models, data augmentation is applied to increase the number of segmented regions using various scaling ratios. On the other hand, to extract the relevant features from the breast cancer cases, a set of deep neural networks (VGGNet, ResNet-50, AlexNet, and GoogLeNet) are employed. The resulting set of features is processed using the binary dipper throated algorithm to select the most effective features that can realize high classification accuracy. The selected features are used to train a neural network to finally classify the thermal images of breast cancer. To achieve accurate classification, the parameters of the employed neural network are optimized using the continuous dipper throated optimization algorithm. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach in classifying the breast cancer cases when compared to other recent approaches in the literature. Moreover, several experiments were conducted to compare the performance of the proposed approach with the other approaches. The results of these experiments emphasized the superiority of the proposed approach.  相似文献

In this study, abnormalities in medical images are analysed using three classifiers, and the results are compared. Breast cancer remains a major public health problem among women worldwide. Recently, many algorithms have evolved for the investigation of breast cancer diagnosis through medical imaging. A computer-aided microcalcification detection method is proposed to categorise the nature of breast cancer as either benign or malignant from input mammogram images. The standard mammogram image corpus, the Mammogram Image Analysis Society database is utilised, and feature extraction is performed using five different wavelet families at level 4 and level 6 decomposition. The work is accomplished through firefly algorithm (FA), extreme learning machine (ELM) and least-square-based non-linear regression (LSNLR) classifiers. The performance of the classifiers is compared by benchmark metrics, such as total error rate, specificity, sensitivity, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, precision, F1 score and the Matthews correlation coefficient. As validation of the classifier results, a kappa analysis is included to determine the agreement among classifiers. The LSNLR classifier attains a 3% to 7% improvement in average accuracy compared with the average classification accuracy of the FA (86.75%) and ELM (90.836%) classifiers.  相似文献

Ultrasound imaging is an imaging technique for early detection of breast cancer. Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) lexicon, developed by The American College of Radiology, provides a standard for expert doctors to interpret the ultrasound images of breast cancer. This standard describes the features to classify the tumour as benign or malignant and it also categorizes the biopsy requirement as a percentage. Biopsy is an invasive method that doctors use for diagnosis of breast cancer. Computer-aided detection (CAD)/diagnosis systems that are designed to include the feature standards used in benign/malignant classification help the doctors in diagnosis but they do not provide enough information about the BI-RADS category of the mass. These systems classify the benign tumours with 90% biopsy possibility (BI-RADS-4) and with 2% biopsy possibility (BI-RADS-2) in the same category. There are some studies in the literature that make category classification via commonly used classifier methods but their success rates are low. In this study, a two-layer, high-success-rate classifier model based on Type-2 fuzzy inference is developed, which classifies the tumour as benign or malignant with its BI-RADS category by incorporating the opinions of the expert doctors. A 99.34% success rate in benign/malignant classification and a 92% success rate in category classification (BI-RADS 2, 3, 4, 5) were obtained in the accuracy tests. These results indicate that the CAD system is valuable as a means of providing a second diagnostic opinion when radiologists carry out mass diagnosis.  相似文献

The present article proposes a novel computer‐aided diagnosis (CAD) technique for the classification of the magnetic resonance brain images. The current method adopt color converted hybrid clustering segmentation algorithm with hybrid feature selection approach based on IGSFFS (Information gain and Sequential Forward Floating Search) and Multi‐Class Support Vector Machine (MC‐SVM) classifier technique to segregate the magnetic resonance brain images into three categories namely normal, benign and malignant. The proposed hybrid evolutionary segmentation algorithm which is the combination of WFF(weighted firefly) and K‐means algorithm called WFF‐K‐means and modified cuckoo search (MCS) and K‐means algorithm called MCS‐K‐means, which can find better cluster partition in brain tumor datasets and also overcome local optima problems in K‐means clustering algorithm. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than other algorithms such as PSO‐K‐means, color converted K‐means, FCM and other traditional approaches. The multiple feature set comprises color, texture and shape features derived from the segmented image. These features are then fed into a MC‐SVM classifier with hybrid feature selection algorithm, trained with data labeled by experts, enabling the detection of brain images at high accuracy levels. The performance of the method is evaluated using classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The proposed method provides highest classification accuracy of greater than 98% with high sensitivity and specificity rates of greater than 95% for the proposed diagnostic model and this shows the promise of the approach. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Due to the heterogeneous and complex nature of clinical data, the need to use sophisticated diagnosis techniques has increased significantly in recent years. The proposed approach for diagnosis of breast cancer exploits the potential of an extreme learning machine (ELM) and analyzes its performance after classification into benign and malignant cases. To optimize the ELM network in terms of computation time and memory resources, weight pruning is used without performance compromise. Using real data sets, numerical experiments have been conducted. With an accuracy of 93%, the optimum numbers of node layers for breast cancer diagnosis has been found to be 20. Comparative results demonstrate over-performance of the proposed ELM approach.  相似文献

Histopathology is considered as the gold standard for diagnosing breast cancer. Traditional machine learning (ML) algorithm provides a promising performance for cancer diagnosis if the training dataset is balanced. Nevertheless, if the training dataset is imbalanced the performance of the ML model is skewed toward the majority class. It may pose a problem for the pathologist because if the benign sample is misclassified as malignant, then a pathologist could make a misjudgment about the diagnosis. A limited investigation has been done in literature for solving the class imbalance problem in computer‐aided diagnosis (CAD) of breast cancer using histopathology. This work proposes a hybrid ML model to solve the class imbalance problem. The proposed model employs pretrained ResNet50 and the kernelized weighted extreme learning machine for CAD of breast cancer using histopathology. The breast cancer histopathological images are obtained from publicly available BreakHis and BisQue datasets. The proposed method achieved a reasonable performance for the classification of the minority as well as the majority class instances. In comparison, the proposed approach outperforms the state‐of‐the‐art ML models implemented in previous studies using the same training‐testing folds of the publicly accessible BreakHis dataset.  相似文献

Breast cancer positions as the most well-known threat and the main source of malignant growth-related morbidity and mortality throughout the world. It is apical of all new cancer incidences analyzed among females. Two features substantially influence the classification accuracy of malignancy and benignity in automated cancer diagnostics. These are the precision of tumor segmentation and appropriateness of extracted attributes required for the diagnosis. In this research, the authors have proposed a ResU-Net (Residual U-Network) model for breast tumor segmentation. The proposed methodology renders augmented, and precise identification of tumor regions and produces accurate breast tumor segmentation in contrast-enhanced MR images. Furthermore, the proposed framework also encompasses the residual network technique, which subsequently enhances the performance and displays the improved training process. Over and above, the performance of ResU-Net has experimentally been analyzed with conventional U-Net, FCN8, FCN32. Algorithm performance is evaluated in the form of dice coefficient and MIoU (Mean Intersection of Union), accuracy, loss, sensitivity, specificity, F1score. Experimental results show that ResU-Net achieved validation accuracy & dice coefficient value of 73.22% & 85.32% respectively on the Rider Breast MRI dataset and outperformed as compared to the other algorithms used in experimentation.  相似文献

A computer software system is designed for the segmentation and classification of benign and malignant tumor slices in brain computed tomography images. In this paper, we present a texture analysis methods to find and select the texture features of the tumor region of each slice to be segmented by support vector machine (SVM). The images considered for this study belongs to 208 benign and malignant tumor slices. The features are extracted and selected using Student's t‐test. The reduced optimal features are used to model and train the probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier and the classification accuracy is evaluated using k fold cross validation method. The segmentation results are also compared with the experienced radiologist ground truth. Quantitative analysis between ground truth and segmented tumor is presented in terms of quantitative measure of segmentation accuracy and the overlap similarity measure of Jaccard index. The proposed system provides some newly found texture features have important contribution in segmenting and classifying benign and malignant tumor slices efficiently and accurately. The experimental results show that the proposed hybrid texture feature analysis method using Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) based classifier is able to achieve high segmentation and classification accuracy effectiveness as measured by Jaccard index, sensitivity, and specificity.  相似文献

Ultrasonography AKA diagnostic sonography is a noninvasive imaging technique that allows the analysis of an organic structure, thanks to the ultrasonic waves. It is a valuable diagnosis method and is also seen as the evidence-based diagnostic method for thyroid nodules. The diagnosis, however, is visually made by the practitioner. The automatic discrimination of benign and malignant nodules would be very useful to report Thyroid Imaging Reporting. In this paper, we propose a fine-tuning approach based on deep learning using a Convolutional Neural Network model named resNet-50. This approach allows improving the effectiveness of the classification of thyroid nodules in ultrasound images. Experiments have been conducted on 814 ultrasound images and the results show that our proposed approach dramatically improves the accuracy of the classification of thyroid nodules and outperforms The VGG-19 model.  相似文献

Breast cancer is one of the deadly diseases in women that have raised the mortality rate of women. An accurate and early detection of breast cancer using mammogram images is still a complex task. Hence, this article proposes a novel breast cancer detection model, which included five major phases: (a) preprocessing, (b) segmentation, (c) feature extraction, (d) feature selection, and (e) classification. The input mammogram image is initially preprocessed using contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) and median filtering. The preprocessed image is then subjected to segmentation via the region growing algorithm. Subsequently, geometric features, texture features and gradient features are extracted from the segmented image. Since the length of the feature vector is large, it is essential to select the optimal features. Here, the selection of optimal features is done by a hybrid optimization algorithm. Once the optimal features are selected, they are subjected to the classification process involving the neural network (NN) classifier. As a novelty, the weight of NN is selected optimally to enhance the accuracy of diagnosis (benign and malignant). The optimal feature selection as well as the weight optimization of NN is accomplished by merging the Lion algorithm (LA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), named as velocity updated lion algorithm (VU‐LA). Finally, a performance‐based evaluation is carried out between VU‐LA and the existing models like, whale optimization algorithm (WOA), gray wolf optimization (GWO), firefly (FF), PSO, and LA.  相似文献

Adrenal tumors occur on adrenal glands and are generally detected on abdominal area scans. Adrenal tumors, which are incidentally detected, release vital hormones. These types of tumors that can be malignant affect body metabolism. Both of benign and malign adrenal tumors can have a similar size, intensity, and shape, this situation may lead to wrong decision during diagnosis and characterization of tumors. Thus, biopsy is done to confirm diagnosis of tumor types. In this study, adrenal tumor characterization is handled by using magnetic resonance images. In this way, it is wanted that patient can be disentangled from one or more imaging modalities (some of them can includes X-ray) and biopsy. An adrenal tumor image set, which includes five types of adrenal tumors and has 112 benign tumors and 10 malign tumors, was used in this study. Two data sets were created from the adrenal tumor image set by manually/semiautomatically segmented adrenal tumors and feature sets of these data sets are constituted by different methods. Two-dimensional gray-level co-occurrence matrix (2D-GLCM), gray-level run-length matrix (GLRLM), and two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2D-DWT) methods were analyzed to reveal the most effective features on adrenal tumor characterization. Feature sets were classified in two ways: benign/malign (binary classification) and type characterization (multiclass classification). Support vector machine and artificial neural network classified feature sets. The best performance on benign/malign classification was obtained by the 2D-GLCM feature set. The best results were assessed with sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, precision, and F-score metrics and they were 99.17%, 90%, 98.4%, 99.17%, and 99.13%, respectively. The highest classification performance on type characterization was obtained by the 2D-DWT feature set as 59.62%, 96.17%, 93.19%, 54.69%, and 54.94% for sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, precision, and F-score metrics, respectively.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to design an expert system for medical image diagnosis. We propose a method based on association rule mining combined with classification technique to enhance the diagnosis of medical images. This system classifies the images into two categories namely benign and malignant. In the proposed work, association rules are extracted for the selected features using an algorithm called AprioriTidImage, which is an improved version of Apriori algorithm. Then, a new associative classifier CLASS_Hiconst ( CL assifier based on ASS ociation rules with Hi gh Con fidence and S uppor t ) is modeled and used to diagnose the medical images. The performance of our approach is compared with two different classifiers Fuzzy‐SVM and multilayer back propagation neural network (MLPNN) in terms of classifier efficiency with sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value. The experimental result shows 96% accuracy, 97% sensitivity, and 96% specificity and proves that association rule based classifier is a powerful tool in assisting the diagnosing process. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several researchers are trying to develop different computer-aided diagnosis system for breast cancer employing machine learning (ML) methods. The inputs to these ML algorithms are labeled histopathological images which have complex visual patterns. So, it is difficult to identify quality features for cancer diagnosis. The pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have recently emerged as an unsupervised feature extractor. However, a limited investigation has been done for breast cancer recognition using histopathology images with CNN as a feature extractor. This work investigates ten different pre-trained CNNs for extracting the features from breast cancer histopathology images. The breast cancer histopathological images are obtained from publicly available BreakHis dataset. The classification models for the different feature sets, which are obtained using different pre-trained CNNs in consideration, are developed using a linear support vector machine. The proposed method outperforms the other state of art methods for cancer detection, which can be observed from the results obtained.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of this work is to assist pathologists in the evaluation of tumour cells in microscopic breast images where we distinguish three kinds of cells: positive tumour cells for oestrogen receptor, negative tumour cells for oestrogen receptor, and non-tumour cells. This work has proven to be very difficult because of the variability of cells’ size, shape (morphology) and distribution. Conventional methods for segmentation like thresholding and edge detection are unable to resolve this problem. The herein proposed method is a hybrid approach combining segmentation and classification to ensure better results. While the morphological processes are used for artefact elimination and cell segmentation, the classification algorithm is used to automatically classify all existing cells in the image. The paper contains also a comparative study between fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm and neural network-based classification. The proposed approach was applied on several microscopic breast cancer cells images corresponding to eight patients. The experimental results are efficient and the found values are near to those announced by experts. To better interpret these results, we performed a statistical analysis in terms of sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of detected tumour cells. The statistics proved the efficacy of the proposed approach since a percentage exceeding 90% was recorded for sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for the totality of the studied images. When using neural networks, the statistics are slightly above those gathered with fuzzy c-means. We recorded over 97% for sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of detected cells, reaching an error rate below 3%. Furthermore, it should be kept in mind that analysing breast cells images using the proposed approach gives us important information such as number of tumour cells, and number and percentage of positive tumour cells. Moreover, it is so much less time-consuming than experts’ evaluation.  相似文献

Abnormal growth of brain tissues is the real cause of brain tumor. Strategy for the diagnosis of brain tumor at initial stages is one of the key step for saving the life of a patient. The manual segmentation of brain tumor magnetic resonance images (MRIs) takes time and results vary significantly in low-level features. To address this issue, we have proposed a ResNet-50 feature extractor depended on multilevel deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for reliable images segmentation by considering the low-level features of MRI. In this model, we have extracted features through ResNet-50 architecture and fed these feature maps to multi-level CNN model. To handle the classification process, we have collected a total number of 2043 MRI patients of normal, benign, and malignant tumor. Three model CNN, multi-level CNN, and ResNet-50 based multi-level CNN have been used for detection and classification of brain tumors. All the model results are calculated in terms of various numerical values identified as precision (P), recall (R), accuracy (Acc) and f1-score (F1-S). The obtained average results are much better as compared to already existing methods. This modified transfer learning architecture might help the radiologists and doctors as a better significant system for tumor diagnosis.  相似文献

Classification of breast masses in ultrasonic B-scan images is undertaken using a multiparameter approach. The parameters are generated on the basis of a non-Rayleigh statistic model of the backscattered envelope from the breast tissue. They can be computed automatically with minimal clinical intervention once the location of the mass is known. A new discriminant is developed that combines these parameters linearly. It is seen that this new discriminant performs classification of masses into benign or malignant better than the classification by any one of the individual parameters. The data set studied consisted of 99 cases (70 patients with benign masses and 29 patients with malignant masses). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (A/sub z/) and statistical attributes of the areas were studied to establish the enhancement in performance. The A/sub z/ value after combining all the parameters was found to be 0.8701. Upon combining this parameter with the level of suspicion (LOS) scores of a radiologist, the performance is further enhanced with an area under the (empirical) ROC of 0.94 having an operating point at a sensitivity of 0.965 and specificity of 0.87. It is suggested that this automated approach may hold promise as a means of classifying breast masses.  相似文献

The parameters of the Nakagami distribution have been utilized in the past to classify lesions in breast tissue as benign or malignant. To avoid the effect of operator-gain settings on the parameters of the Nakagami distribution, normalized parameters were utilized for the classification. The normalized parameter was defined as the ratio of the parameter at the site of the lesion to its average value over several regions away from the site. This technique, however, was very time consuming. In this paper, the application of frequency diversity and compounding is explored to achieve this normalization. Lesions are classified using these normalized parameters at the site. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of the parameters of the Nakagami distribution has been conducted before and after compounding on a data set of 60 benign and 65 malignant lesions. The ROC results indicate that this technique can reasonably classify lesions in breast tissue as benign or malignant  相似文献

Breast cancer is the second deadliest type of cancer. Early detection of breast cancer can considerably improve the effectiveness of treatment. A significant early sign of breast cancer is the mass. However, separating the cancerous masses from the normal portions of the breast tissue is usually a challenge for radiologists. Recently, because of the availability of high‐accuracy computing, computer‐aided detection systems based on image processing have become capable of accurately diagnosing the various types of cancers. The main purpose of this study is to utilize a powerful image segmentation method for the diagnosis of cancerous regions through mammography, based on a new configuration of the multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network. The most popular method for minimizing the errors in an MLP neural network is backpropagation. However, this method has certain drawbacks, such as a low convergence speed and becoming trapped at the local minimum. In this study, a new training algorithm based on the whale optimization algorithm is proposed for the MLP network. This algorithm is capable of solving various problems toward the current algorithms for the analyzed systems. The proposed method is validated on the Mammographic Image Analysis Society database, which contains 322 digitized mammography images, and the Digital Database for Screening Mammography, which contains approximately 2500 digitized mammography images. To assess the detection performance of the proposed system, the correct detection rate, percentage of identification with false acceptance, and percentage of identification with false rejection were evaluated and compared using various methods. The results indicate that the proposed method is highly efficient and yields significantly better accuracy compared with other methods.  相似文献
