A simple triangular solid shell element formulation is developed for efficient analysis of plates and shells undergoing finite rotations. The kinematics of the present solid shell element formulation is purely vectorial with only three translational degrees of freedom per node. Accordingly, the kinematics of deformation is free of the limitation of small angle increments, and thus the formulation allows large load increments in the analysis of finite rotation. An assumed strain field is carefully selected to alleviate the locking effect without triggering undesirable spurious kinematic modes. In addition, the curved surface of shell structures is modeled with flat facet elements to obviate the membrane locking effect. Various numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the present element formulation for the analysis of plates and shells undergoing finite rotation. The present formulation is attractive in that only three points are needed for numerical integration over an element.  相似文献

An efficient assumed strain triangular solid element is developed for the analysis of plate and shell structures. The finite element formulation is based on the two‐field assumed strain formulation with two independent fields of assumed displacement and assumed strain. The assumed strain field is carefully selected to alleviate the shear locking effect without triggering undesirable spurious kinematic modes. The curvilinear surface of shell structures is modelled with flat facet elements to obviate the membrane locking effect. The patch tests are successfully passed, and numerical test involving various example problems demonstrates the validity and efficiency of the present element. Bubble function displacements are used in conjunction with the assumed strain formulation to construct efficient triangular solid shell elements tailored for shell analysis. Two versions of 36‐DOF triangular elements are presented with different bubble function displacements and the corresponding assumed strain fields. In the first version the bubble function displacement is independent of the thickness while in the second version the bubble function varies linearly in the thickness direction. The assumed strain fields are carefully selected to alleviate locking effect. The first version models curved shells with flat triangular elements. The second version is effective in alleviating the membrane locking and thus allows more accurate modelling of curved shells. Various numerical examples demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the present assumed strain formulation elements with the bubble function displacements. A 6‐node curved triangular shell element formulation based on a co‐rotational framework is proposed to solve large‐displacement and large‐rotation problems, in which part of the rigid‐body translations and all rigid‐body rotations in the global co‐ordinate system are excluded in calculating the element strain energy. Thus, an element‐independent formulation is achieved. Besides three translational displacement variables, two components of the mid‐surface normal vector at each node are defined as vectorial rotational variables; these two additional variables render all nodal variables additive in an incremental solution procedure. To alleviate the membrane and shear locking phenomena, the membrane strains and the out‐of‐plane shear strains are replaced with assumed strains in calculating the element strain energy. The strategy used in the mixed interpolation of tensorial components approach is employed in defining the assumed strains. The internal force vector and the element tangent stiffness matrix are obtained from calculating directly the first derivative and second derivative of the element strain energy with respect to the nodal variables, respectively. Different from most other existing co‐rotational element formulations, all nodal variables in the present curved triangular shell formulation are commutative in calculating the second derivative of the strain energy; as a result, the element tangent stiffness matrix is symmetric and is updated by using the total values of the nodal variables in an incremental solution procedure. Such update procedure is advantageous in solving dynamic problems. Finally, several elastic plate and shell problems are solved to demonstrate the reliability, efficiency, and convergence of the present formulation. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an optimal low‐order accurate piezoelectric solid‐shell element formulation to model active composite shell structures that can undergo large deformation and large overall motion. This element has only displacement and electric degrees of freedom (dofs), with no rotational dofs, and an optimal number of enhancing assumed strain (EAS) parameters to pass the patch tests (both membrane and out‐of‐plane bending). The combination of the present optimal piezoelectric solid‐shell element and the optimal solid‐shell element previously developed allows for efficient and accurate analyses of large deformable composite multilayer shell structures with piezoelectric layers. To make the 3‐D analysis of active composite shells containing discrete piezoelectric sensors and actuators even more efficient, the composite solid‐shell element is further developed here. Based on the mixed Fraeijs de Veubeke–Hu–Washizu (FHW) variational principle, the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane bending behaviours are improved via a new and efficient enhancement of the strain tensor. Shear‐locking and curvature thickness locking are resolved effectively by using the assumed natural strain (ANS) method. We also present an optimal‐control design for vibration suppression of a large deformable structure based on the general finite element approach. The linear‐quadratic regulator control scheme with output feedback is used as a control law on the basis of the state space model of the system. Numerical examples involving static analyses and dynamic analyses of active shell structures having a large range of element aspect ratios are presented. Active vibration control of a composite multilayer shell with distributed piezoelectric sensors and actuators is performed to test the present element and the control design procedure. This paper presents a versatile low order locking‐free mixed solid‐shell element that can be readily employed for a wide range of linear elastic structural analyses, that is, from thick isotropic structures to multilayer anisotropic composites. This solid‐shell element has eight nodes with only displacement degrees of freedom and few assumed stress parameters that provide very accurate interlaminar stress calculations through the element thickness. These elements can be stacked on top of each other to model multilayer structures, fulfilling the interlaminar stress continuity at the interlayer surfaces and zero traction conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the laminate. The element formulation is based on the well‐known Fraeijs de Veubeke–Hu–Washizu mixed variational principle with enhanced assumed strains formulation and assumed natural strains formulation to alleviate the different types of locking phenomena in solid‐shell elements. The distinct feature of the present formulation is its ability to accurately calculate the interlaminar stress field in multilayer structures, which is achieved by the introduction of a constraint equation on the interlaminar stresses in the Fraeijs de Veubeke–Hu–Washizu principle‐based enhanced assumed strains formulation. The intelligent computer coding of the present formulation makes the present element appropriate for a wide range of structural analyses. To assess the present formulation's accuracy, a variety of popular numerical benchmark examples related to element convergence, mesh distortion, and shell and laminated composite analyses are investigated and the results are compared with those available in the literature. These benchmark examples reveal that the proposed formulation provides very good results for the structural analysis of shells and multilayer composites. In this paper a new reduced integration eight‐node solid‐shell finite element is presented. The enhanced assumed strain (EAS) concept based on the Hu–Washizu variational principle requires only one EAS degree‐of‐freedom to cure volumetric and Poisson thickness locking. One key point of the derivation is the Taylor expansion of the inverse Jacobian with respect to the element center, which closely approximates the element shape and allows us to implement the assumed natural strain (ANS) concept to eliminate the curvature thickness and the transverse shear locking. The second crucial point is a combined Taylor expansion of the compatible strain with respect to the center of the element and the normal through the element center leading to an efficient and locking‐free hourglass stabilization without rank deficiency. Hence, the element requires only a single integration point in the shell plane and at least two integration points in thickness direction. The formulation fulfills both the membrane and the bending patch test exactly, which has, to the authors' knowledge, not yet been achieved for reduced integration eight‐node solid‐shell elements in the literature. Owing to the three‐dimensional modeling of the structure, fully three‐dimensional material models can be implemented without additional assumptions. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the present contribution we propose an optimal low‐order versatile partial hybrid stress solid‐shell element that can be readily employed for a wide range of geometrically linear elastic structural analyses, that is, from shell‐like isotropic structures to multilayer anisotropic composites. This solid‐shell element has eight nodes with only displacement degrees of freedom and only a few internal parameters that provide the locking‐free behavior and accurate interlaminar shear stress resolution through the element thickness. These elements can be stacked on top of each other to model multilayer composite structures, fulfilling the interlaminar shear stress continuity at the interlayer surfaces and zero traction conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of composite laminates. The element formulation is based on the modified form of the well‐known Fraeijs de Veubeke–Hu–Washizu multifield variational principle with enhanced assumed strains formulation and assumed natural strains formulation to alleviate the different types of locking phenomena in solid‐shell elements. The distinct feature of the present formulation is its ability to accurately calculate the interlaminar shear stress field in multilayer structures, which is achieved by the introduction of the assumed interlaminar shear stress field in a standard enhanced assumed strains formulation based on the Fraeijs de Veubeke–Hu–Washizu principle. The numerical testing of the present formulation, employing a variety of popular numerical benchmark examples related to element patch test, convergence, mesh distortion, shell and laminated composite analyses, proves its accuracy for a wide range of structural analyses.Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We present in this paper an efficient and accurate low‐order solid‐shell element formulation for analyses of large deformable multilayer shell structures with non‐linear materials. The element has only displacement degrees of freedom (dofs), and an optimal number of enhancing assumed strain (EAS) parameters to pass the patch tests (both membrane and out‐of‐plane bending) and to remedy volumetric locking. Based on the mixed Fraeijs de Veubeke‐Hu‐Washizu (FHW) variational principle, the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane bending behaviours are improved and the locking associated with (nearly) incompressible materials is avoided via a new efficient enhancement of strain tensor. Shear locking and curvature thickness locking are resolved effectively by using the assumed natural strain (ANS) method. Two non‐linear 3‐D constitutive models (Mooney–Rivlin material and hyperelastoplastic material at finite strain) are applied directly without requiring the enforcement of the plane‐stress assumption. In particular, we give a simple derivation for the hyperelastoplastic model using spectral representations. In addition, the present element has a well‐defined lumped mass matrix, and provides double‐side contact surfaces for shell contact problems. With the dynamics referred to a fixed inertial frame, the present element can be used to analyse multilayer shell structures undergoing large overall motion. Numerical examples involving static analyses and implicit/explicit dynamic analyses of multilayer shell structures with both material and geometric non‐linearities are presented, and compared with existing results obtained from other shell elements and from a meshless method. It is shown that elements that did not pass the out‐of‐plane bending patch test could not provide accurate results, as compared to the present element formulation, which passed the out‐of‐plane bending patch test. The present element proves to be versatile and efficient in the modelling and analyses of general non‐linear composite multilayer shell structures. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new curved quadrilateral composite shell element using vectorial rotational variables is presented. An advanced co‐rotational framework defined by the two vectors generated by the four corner nodes is employed to extract pure element deformation from large displacement/rotation problems, and thus an element‐independent formulation is obtained. The present line of formulation differs from other co‐rotational formulations in that (i) all nodal variables are additive in an incremental solution procedure, (ii) the resulting element tangent stiffness is symmetric, and (iii) is updated using the total values of the nodal variables, making solving dynamic problems highly efficient. To overcome locking problems, uniformly reduced integration is used to compute the internal force vector and the element tangent stiffness matrix. A stabilized assumed strain procedure is employed to avoid spurious zero‐energy modes. Several examples involving composite plates and shells with large displacements and large rotations are presented to testify to the reliability, computational efficiency, and accuracy of the present formulation. In this paper, a novel reduced integration eight‐node solid‐shell finite element formulation with hourglass stabilization is proposed. The enhanced assumed strain method is adopted to eliminate the well‐known volumetric and Poisson thickness locking phenomena with only one internal variable required. In order to alleviate the transverse shear and trapezoidal locking and correct rank deficiency simultaneously, the assumed natural strain method is implemented in conjunction with the Taylor expansion of the inverse Jacobian matrix. The projection of the hourglass strain‐displacement matrix and reconstruction of its transverse shear components are further employed to avoid excessive hourglass stiffness. The proposed solid‐shell element formulation successfully passes both the membrane and bending patch tests. Several typical examples are presented to demonstrate the excellent performance and extensive applicability of the proposed element. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Compared to the large number of curved quadrilateral degenerated‐ and solid‐shell elements, there are only a very few curved triangular degenerated‐ and solid‐shell elements. Based on the assumed natural strain sampling scheme previously developed for a quadratic degenerated‐shell element for linear analysis, this paper devises geometric non‐linear six‐node degenerated‐shell and twelve‐node solid‐shell elements. Both elements can be curved and are only equipped with the standard nodal d.o.f.s. Careful consideration has been exercised to circumvent various locking phenomena that plague degenerated‐ and solid‐shell elements. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate their efficacy. A set of four-node shell element models based on the assumed strain formulation is considered here. The formulation allows for changes in the shell thickness. As a result, the kinematics of deformation are described by purely vectorial variables, without using rotational angles. The present study investigates the use of bubble function displacements and the assumed strain field. Careful selection of the assumed strain terms generates an element whose order of numerical integration does not increase even when the bubble function displacements are added. Results for the four-node element without any bubble function terms show sensitivity to element distortion. Use of the bubble functions with a carefully chosen assumed strain field greatly improves element performance. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The degenerated approach for shell elements of Ahmad and co‐workers is revisited in this paper. To avoid transverse shear locking effects in four‐node bilinear elements, an alternative formulation based on the enhanced assumed strain (EAS) method of Simo and Rifai is proposed directed towards the transverse shear terms of the strain field. In the first part of the work the analysis of the null transverse shear strain subspace for the degenerated element and also for the selective reduced integration (SRI) and assumed natural strain (ANS) formulations is carried out. Locking effects are then justified by the inability of the null transverse shear strain subspace, implicitly defined by a given finite element, to properly reproduce the required displacement patterns. Illustrating the proposed approach, a remarkably simple single‐element test is described where ANS formulation fails to converge to the correct results, being characterized by the same performance as the degenerated shell element. The adequate enhancement of the null transverse shear strain subspace is provided by the EAS method, enforcing Kirchhoff hypothesis for low thickness values and leading to a framework for the development of shear‐locking‐free shell elements. Numerical linear elastic tests show improved results obtained with the proposed formulation. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The natural frequencies of isotropic and composite laminates are presented. The forced vibration analysis of laminated composite plates and shells subjected to arbitrary loading is investigated. In order to overcome membrane and shear locking phenomena, the assumed natural strain method is used. To develop a laminated shell element for free and forced vibration analysis, the equivalent constitutive equation that makes the computation of composite structures efficient was applied. The Mindlin-Reissner theory which allows the shear deformation and rotary inertia effect to be considered is adopted for development of nine-node assumed strain shell element. The present shell element offers significant advantages since it consistently uses the natural co-ordinate system. Results of the present theory show good agreement with the 3-D elasticity and analytical solutions. In addition the effect of damping is investigated on the forced vibration analysis of laminated composite plates and shells.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the vibration analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) and laminated composite structures, using a refined 8-node shell element that allows for the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The properties of FGM vary continuously through the thickness direction according to the volume fraction of constituents defined by sigmoid function, but in this method, their Poisson’s ratios of the FGM plates and shells are assumed to be constant. The finite element, based on a first-order shear deformation theory, is further improved by the combined use of assumed natural strains and different sets of collocation points for interpolation the different strain components. We analyze the influence of the shell element with the various location and number of enhanced membrane and shear interpolation. Using the assumed natural strain method with proper interpolation functions the present shell element generates neither membrane nor shear locking behavior even when full integration is used in the formulation. The natural frequencies of plates and shells are presented, and the forced vibration analysis of FGM and laminated composite plates and shells subjected to arbitrary loading is carried out. In order to overcome membrane and shear locking phenomena, the assumed natural strain method is used. To validate and compare the finite element numerical solutions, the reference solutions of plates based on the Navier’s method, the series solutions of sigmoid FGM (S-FGM) plates are obtained. Results of the present theory show good agreement with the reference solutions. In addition the effect of damping is investigated on the forced vibration analysis of FGM plates and shells.  相似文献

The present paper describes an assumed strain finite element model with six degrees of freedom per node designed for geometrically non-linear shell analysis. An important feature of the present paper is the discussion on the spurious kinematic modes and the assumed strain field in the geometrically non-linear setting. The kinematics of deformation is described by using vector components in contrast to the conventional formulation which requires the use of trigonometric functions of rotational angles. Accordingly, converged solutions can be obtained for load or displacement increments that are much larger than possible with the conventional formulation with rotational angles. In addition, a detailed study of the spurious kinematic modes and the choice of assumed strain field reveals that the same assumed strain field can be used for both geometrically linear and non-linear cases to alleviate element locking while maintaining kinematic stability. It is strongly recommended that the element models, described in the present paper, be used instead of the conventional shell element models that employ rotational angles.  相似文献

Finite element models with simple triangular geometry facilitate pre-processing for the finite element analysis. In the present study, a robust shear deformable triangular shell element formulation is presented for general plate and shell analysis, using three-node mesh discretization. The present formulation is developed on the basis of the assumed natural strain (ANS) formulation to attenuate the shear locking effect. Furthermore, this study proposes macro triangular element scheme by dividing a three-node triangular mesh into three parts to produce three individual ANS triangular elements and then merges these by condensing out the virtual center node. The performance of the macro ANS element is highly enhanced by reducing the number of sampling locations of three sub triangular element, but still utilizes three-node mesh discretization same as does the mesh used for three-node triangular elements. The macro ANS element has invariant stiffness, possesses no commutable zero energy mechanism. Numerical tests are presented to illustrate the high performance nature of the macro ANS element in general shell analysis. In particular, the numerical study demonstrates that the macro ANS element completely removes the shear locking effect that has been detrimental in shear deformable linear triangular elements so far. This paper is concerned with a geometrically non‐linear solid shell element to analyse piezoelectric structures. The finite element formulation is based on a variational principle of the Hu–Washizu type and includes six independent fields: displacements, electric potential, strains, electric field, mechanical stresses and dielectric displacements. The element has eight nodes with four nodal degrees of freedoms, three displacements and the electric potential. A bilinear distribution through the thickness of the independent electric field is assumed to fulfill the electric charge conservation law in bending dominated situations exactly. The presented finite shell element is able to model arbitrary curved shell structures and incorporates a 3D‐material law. A geometrically non‐linear theory allows large deformations and includes stability problems. Linear and non‐linear numerical examples demonstrate the ability of the proposed model to analyse piezoelectric devices. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
