The mechanical properties and morphology of polypropylene/wood flour (PP/WF) composites with different impact modifiers and maleated polypropylene (MAPP) as a compatibilizer have been studied. Two different ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymers (EPDM) and one maleated styrene–ethylene/butylene–styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS–MA) have been used as impact modifiers in the PP/WF systems. All three elastomers increased the impact strength of the PP/WF composites but the addition of maleated EPDM and SEBS gave the greatest improvements in impact strength. Addition of MAPP did not affect the impact properties of the composites but had a positive effect on the composite unnotched impact strength when used together with elastomers. Tensile tests showed that MAPP had a negative effect on the elongation at break and a positive effect on tensile strength. The impact modifiers were found to decrease the stiffness of the composites. Scanning electron microscopy showed that maleated EPDM and SEBS had a stronger affinity for the wood surfaces than did the unmodified EPDM. The maleated elastomers are, therefore, expected to form a flexible interphase around the wood particles giving the composites better impact strength. MAPP further enhanced adhesion between WF and impact-modified PP systems. EPDM and EPDM–MA rubber domains were homogeneously dispersed in the PP matrix, the diameter of domains being between 0.1–1 μm.

Hemp fibers and particles, with different sizes and contents, were used to make hybrid composites based on recycled polypropylene (PP). In particular, the effect of maleated polypropylene (MAPP) addition on the morphology and mechanical properties is reported. The results show that better adhesion is obtained with MAPP addition. In general, fiber content and size had a substantial effect on the tensile, flexural, torsion, and impact properties of the resulting composites. Although, adding MAPP to the samples improved the impact strength of the composites, the values were always lower than neat PP. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

The preparation and characterization of modified and unmodified polypropylene (PP)–wood powder (WP) composites were done under fixed processing conditions. Different techniques were used to study the effect of both WP size and content, as well as compatibilizer content, on the properties of the composites. The results point to the fact that, WP settles in the amorphous part of the matrix and creates new crystalline phases or zones. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs show a relatively even distribution of WP in the PP matrix, which contributes to improvements observed in the properties of the material. Hg‐porosimetry results indicate that the PP matrix, which has a low pore volume, filled the pores in the WP particles. This reduced the total volume of pores in the PP–WP composites. This observation was also supported by a general decrease in gas permeability of the material. Thermal analysis results indicate that the presence of both WP and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) leads to an increase in enthalpy (crystallinity) values, but to a decrease in lamellar thickness in the composites. The thermal stability of the composites improves somewhat compared to that of PP. There were distinctive differences between the results for composites containing different WP particle sizes, as well as for composites prepared in the presence and absence of MAPP. It is clear from the results that the presence of MAPP generally improves the tensile properties of the composites. Larger WP particles gave rise to better tensile properties, in the presence and absence of MAPP. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 4173–4180, 2006  相似文献

Glass fiber (GF) composites are one of the significant challenges in recycling thermoset materials. After pyrolysis, the glass fibers lack sufficient strength and show poor matrix compatibility. Here we have investigated a series of multifunctional silane and silazane agents for surface modification of recycled glass fibers that provide a combination of hydrophobic properties and residual reactive groups on the surface. This allowed testing of interfacial effects from the surface modification as well as a potential synergistic compatibilization using maleated PP (MAPP). The treated GFs were used to prepare new polypropylene (PP) composites by multiple extrusion steps, resulting in a series of composites where the dispersion efficiency was attributed mainly to the surface chemistry and compatibilization effects. The amino-silane modifications of the recycled fibers resulted in further improvements in the mechanical properties of the PP composites in comparison with the hydrophobized GFs. Moreover, synergistic effects from the addition of MAPP were observed with scanning electron microscopy. The results clearly demonstrate that the surface modifications were effective and good alternatives to currently used methods.

Paper sludge was used as a filler in PP/EPDM composites and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (3-APE) was used in this study as a coupling agent. The effects of filler loading and 3-APE on the mechanical properties, water absorption, morphology, and thermal properties of the composites were investigated. It was found that incorporation of a silane coupling agent (3-APE) increased the stabilization (equilibrium) torque, tensile strength, and Young's modulus but decreased the elongation at break and water absorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of the tensile fracture surface of the composites indicated that the presence of 3-APE increased the interfacial interaction between paper sludge and PP/EPDM matrix. The addition of a silane coupling agent also increased the crystallinity of PP and thermal stability of PP/EPDM/PS composites.

The effects of dynamic vulcanization (DV) and dynamic vulcanization plus compatibilizer (DVC) of paper sludge (PS) filled polypropylene/ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (PP/EPDM) composites on torque development, mechanical properties, water absorption, morphology, and thermal properties were studied. Results show that DV and DVC composites exhibit higher stabilization torque than unvulcanized composites (UV). The dynamic vulcanized (DV) and dynamic vulcanized plus compatibilizer (DVC) composites exhibit higher tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus but lower water absorption than unvulcanized composites. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of tensile fracture surface of DV and DVC composites shows the improved interfacial interaction between PS and PP/EPDM matrix. The DV and DVC composites also exhibit better thermal stability and higher crystallinity than unvulcanized PP/EPDM/PS composites. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Composites with different jute fabric contents and polypropylene (PP) were prepared by compression molding. The composite tensile modulus increased as the fiber content increased, although the strain at break decreased due to the restriction imposed on the deformation of the matrix by the rigid fibers. Moreover, and despite the chemical incompatibility between the polar fiber and the PP matrix, the tensile strength increased with jute content because of the use of long woven fibers. The interfacial adhesion between jute and PP was improved by the addition of different commercial maleated polypropylenes to the neat PP matrix. The effect of these coupling agents on the interface properties was inferred from the resulting composite mechanical properties. Out‐of‐plane instrumented falling weight impact tests showed that compatibilized composites had lower propagation energy than uncompatibilized ones, which was a clear indication that the adhesion between matrix and fibers was better in the former case since fewer mechanisms of energy propagation were activated. These results are in agreement with those found in tensile tests, inasmuch as the compatibilized composites exhibit the highest tensile strength. Scanning electron microscopy also revealed that the compatibilized composites exhibited less fiber pullout and smoother fiber surface than uncompatibilized ones. The thermal behavior of PP–compatibilizer blends was also analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry, to confirm that the improvements in the mechanical properties were the result of the improved adhesion between both faces and not due to changes in the crystallinity of the matrix.

Betel nut leaf fiber (BNLF) is a new finding as cellulosic filler for polymer composites. Its main constituents are 75% α‐cellulose, 12% hemicelluloses, 10% lignin, and 3% others matter, viscosity average molecular weight 132,000 and degree of crystallinity 70%. In the present work, BNLF reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared using heat press molding method. 5–20 wt% short length fiber is taken for getting benefits of easy manufacturing and the fiber was chemically treated with NaOH, dicumyl peroxide (DCP), and maleic anhydride‐modified PP (MAPP) to promote the interfacial bond with PP. The extent of modification of fiber was assessed on the basis of morphology, bulk density, moisture absorption, thermal, and mechanical properties of untreated fiber, treated fiber, and their reinforcing PP composites. The tensile and flexural strength of composites increase with the increase of fiber loading up to 10 and 20 wt%, respectively. It was also observed that Young's modulus and flexural modulus increase with fiber loading. The thermal degradation behavior of resulting composites was investigated. Among the various treated fibers, MAPP‐treated fiber composite showed best interfacial interactions as well as mechanical and thermal properties. POLYM. Binary composites of high‐crystalline fibrous cellulose with polypropylene (PP) or maleic anhydride‐grafted polypropylene (MAPP) were prepared by melt‐mixing with different contents of cellulose from 0 to 60 wt %. Ternary composites of cellulose with PP and MAPP were also prepared to investigate the effects of MAPP as a compatibilizer between cellulose and PP. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the addition of MAPP generates strong interactions between a PP matrix and cellulose fibers: All cellulose fibers are encapsulated by layers of the matrix and connected tightly within the matrix. Thus, the tensile strength and Young's modulus of MAPP‐containing composites increase with an increase in MAPP and cellulose content, in contrast to the decrease in tensile strength of a PP‐based binary composite with an increase in cellulose. Cellulose fibers act as a nucleating agent for the crystallization of PP, which is promoted by the addition of MAPP through an increase of the crystallization temperature of PP in the composite. Accordingly, both cellulose and MAPP facilitate the thermooxidative stability of PP composites in the following order: MAPP/cellulose > PP/MAPP/cellulose > PP/cellulose > PP. Relative water absorption increases with an increase in cellulose content, decreasing with the addition of MAPP. MAPP‐containing cellulose composites have high potential for applications as environmentally friendly materials. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 87: 337–345, 2003  相似文献

Blends of maleated polypropylene (MAPP) with high contents of waste rubber powder, namely ground tire rubber and waste ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) powder, were used as impact modifiers for polypropylene (PP) based composites with different reinforcements (hemp, talc, and milled glass fiber). Adding reinforcements led to increase in modulus (tensile, flexural, and torsion moduli) of PP, while its impact strength decreased noticeably. Impact modification of PP‐based composites was successfully performed via inclusion of MAPP/waste rubber compounds, especially compounds containing waste EPDM powder. Inclusion of such impact modifiers increased impact strength of composites over 80%. The effects of impact modification were more significant for hemp‐ and glass‐filled composites compared to composites containing talc. However, slight decrease in tensile, flexural, and torsion moduli (up to 30%) of the composites was also observed after inclusion of impact modifiers. POLYM. The effect of two compatibilizers, i.e. ethylene diamine dilaurate (EDD) and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) on the mechanical properties, water absorption, morphology, and thermal properties of silica‐filled polypropylene (PP/Sil) composites were studied. The results show that the tensile, impact and flexural strengths (up to 2 php), Young's modulus, and elongation at break (Eb) increased with increasing EDD content. However, increasing MAPP content increases the tensile strength, Young's modulus, impact and flexural strengths, and water absorption resistance. At a similar compatibilizer content, EDD exhibits higher Eb, impact and flexural strengths but lowers tensile strength, Young's modulus, and water absorption resistance compared with MAPP. Scanning electron microscopy study of tensile fractured surfaces exhibits the evidence of better silica‐PP adhesion with MAPP and EDD compared with the similar composites but without compatibilizer. Fourier transform infra red spectra provide an evidence of interaction between EDD or MAPP with PP/Sil composites. Termogravimetry analysis results indicate that the addition of EDD or MAPP slightly increases the thermal stability of PP/Sil composites. Differential scanning calorimetry also indicates that PP/Sil composites with EDD or MAPP have higher heat fusion (ΔHf(com)) and crystallinity (Xcom) than similar composites but without compatibilizer. The PP Composites containing Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge husks fibers with different surface treatments were prepared. The mechanical properties such as tensile properties and impact properties of the composites were investigated. It is revealed that the composites with fibers treated by alkali and the following treatments of silane coupling agents KH570, titanate coupling agent JN‐9A, acetic anhydride, MAPP, or bleach, all performed higher in tensile properties than that with untreated fibers, while lower in impact properties. Meanwhile, all treated fibers performed better thermal stability than untreated fibers. The fibers treated by alkali followed by KH570 treatment were added into PP with different contents. It is found that as the fiber content increases, the elastic modulus and impact strength of the composites increase sharply at first followed by a decrease, while the tensile strength decrease initially and increase with a peak at 10%, then decrease continuously. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The instrumented Izod and Charpy tests were performed on the sawdust–polypropylene (PP) composites to study the nature of impact resistance in the thermoplastic wood composites. The notched Izod strength was found to increase with filler content in composites containing the Maleic–anhydride–grafted PP (MAPP) additive. The Izod strength even exceeds that of the neat matrix resin at higher filler contents, indicating a methodology for applying the recycled PP and also for reinforcing the thermoplastics with wood powders. While the static tensile results show evidences for the reinforcing role of the wood filler, a fracture mechanics characterization through the Charpy impact tests effects of MAPP under the impact loading rates. The choice of MAPP as the additive was discussed accordingly for application of the sort of materials. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 81: 1420–1428, 2001  相似文献

Thermoplastics reinforced with natural fibers have attracted much attention from researchers because of their advantages, especially regarding environmental aspects. However, poor impact strength, particularly at low temperatures, limits the application of some thermoplastics, such as polypropylene (PP). To minimize this drawback, impact modifiers have been used, including the terpolymer of ethylene‐propylene‐diene (EPDM). In this work, PP/EPDM/sisal composites of distinct compositions were investigated focusing on the effect of the alkali (NaOH) treatment of the vegetable fiber on the composites properties regarding physical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological behavior. The results indicated that flow rate decreases at higher fiber content due to flow hindering by the presence of the fibers. The addition of the fiber, in general, increased Young's modulus and strength (tensile and flexural), whereas impact strength increased for higher EPDM content. The alkali treatment was considered generally efficient in terms of mechanical properties, even though this was not found in the dynamic mechanical analysis. POLYM. Hybrid composites of polypropylene (PP), reinforced with short banana and glass fibers were fabricated using Haake torque rheocord followed by compression molding with and without the presence maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) as a coupling agent. Incorporation of both fibers into PP matrix resulted in increase of tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength upto 30 wt% with an optimum strength observed at 2 wt% MAPP treated 15 wt% banana and 15 wt% glass fiber. The rate of water absorption for the hybrid composites was decreased due to the presence of glass fiber and coupling agent. The effect of fiber loading in presence of coupling agent on the dynamic mechanical properties has been analyzed to investigate the interfacial properties. An increase in storage modulus (E′) of the treated‐composite indicates higher stiffness. The loss tangent (tan δ) spectra confirms a strong influence of fiber loading and coupling agent concentration on the α and β relaxation process of PP. The nature of fiber matrix adhesion was examined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the tensile fractured specimen. Thermal measurements were carried out through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), indicated an increase in the crystallization temperature and thermal stability of PP with the incorporation of MAPP‐treated banana and glass fiber.
