Blending of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters (LCPs) with conventional polymers could result in materials that can be used as an alternative for short fiber‐reinforced thermoplastic composites, because of their low melt viscosity as well as their inherent high stiffness and strength, high use temperature, and excellent chemical resistance and low coefficient of expansion. In most of the blends was used LCP of 40 mol % of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and 60 mol % of p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (PABA). In this work, blends of several copolyesters having various PABA compositions from 10 to 70 mol % and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) were prepared and their rheological and thermal properties were investigated. For convenience, the copolyesters were designated as PETA‐x, where x is the mol % of PABA. It was found that PET‐60 and PET‐70 copolyesters decreased the melt viscosity of PBT in the blends and those PBT/PETA‐60 and PBT/PETA‐70 blends showed different melt viscosity behaviors with the change in shear rate, while blends of PBT and PET‐x having less than 50 mol % of PABA exhibited totally different rheological behaviors. The blends of PBT with PETA‐50, PETA‐60, and PETA‐70 showed the morphology of multiple layers of fibers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 74: 1797–1806, 1999  相似文献

Poly(butylene terephthalate), poly(butylene azelate), and poly(butylene terephthalate/butylene azelate) random copolymers of various compositions were synthesized in bulk using the well‐known two‐stage polycondensation procedure, and characterized in terms of chemical structure and molecular weight. The thermal behavior was examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. As far as the thermal stability is concerned, it was found to be rather similar for all copolymers and homopolymers investigated. All the copolymers were found to be partially crystalline, and the main effect of copolymerization was a lowering in the amount of crystallinity and a decrease of melting temperature with respect to pure homopolymers. Flory's equation was found to describe the Tm–composition data and permitted to calculate the melting temperatures (T°m ) and the heats of fusion (ΔHu) of both the completely crystalline homopolymers. Owing to the high crystallization rate, the glass transition was observable only for the copolymers containing from 30 to 70 mol % of the terephthalate units; even though the samples cannot be frozen in a completely amorphous state, the data obtained confirmed that the introduction of the aromatic units gave rise to an increase of Tg, due to a chain stiffening. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Commercial grade poly(ethylene terephthalate), (PET, intrinsic viscosity = 0.80 dL/g) and poly(butylene terephthalate), (PBT, intrinsic viscosity = 1.00 dL/g) were melt blended over the entire composition range using a counterrotating twin‐screw extruder. The mechanical, thermal, electrical, and rheological properties of the blends were studied. All of the blends showed higher impact properties than that of PET or PBT. The 50:50 blend composition exhibited the highest impact value. Other mechanical properties also showed similar trends for blends of this composition. The addition of PBT increased the processability of PET. Differential scanning calorimetry data showed the presence of both phases. For all blends, only a single glass‐transition temperature was observed. The melting characteristics of one phase were influenced by the presence of the other. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) properties of poly(lactic acid)/ poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) specimens suggest that only small amounts of poor PLA and/or PBAT crystals are present in their corresponding melt crystallized specimens. In fact, the percentage crystallinity, peak melting temperature and onset re‐crystallization temperature values of PLA/PBAT specimens reduce gradually as their PBAT contents increase. However, the glass transition temperatures of PLA molecules found by DSC and DMA analysis reduce to the minimum value as the PBAT contents of PLAxPBATy specimens reach 2.5 wt %. Further morphological and DMA analysis of PLA/PBAT specimens reveal that PBAT molecules are miscible with PLA molecules at PBAT contents equal to or less than 2.5 wt %, since no distinguished phase‐separated PBAT droplets and tan δ transitions were found on fracture surfaces and tan δ curves of PLA/PBAT specimens, respectively. In contrast to PLA, the PBAT specimen exhibits highly deformable properties. After blending proper amounts of PBAT in PLA, the inherent brittle deformation behavior of PLA was successfully improved. Possible reasons accounting for these interesting crystallization, compatible and tensile properties of PLA/PBAT specimens are proposed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butylene terephthalate‐co‐2‐methyl‐ethylene terephthalate) (PBT/MET) was synthesized by incorporating 1,2‐propandiol(1,2‐PDO) into PBT chains. The molar composition and chemical structure of PBT/MET copolyesters were confirmed by means of FT‐IR and 1H‐NMR. To investigate the effect of 1,2‐PDO on the thermal properties of PBT/MET copolyesters, the copolymerizations were carried out by varying various contents of MET units, and the prepared materials were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Results suggested that with the increase of the content of 1,2‐PDO, the amount of crystallinity and the melting temperature decline, while the glass transition temperature increases and the copolyesters become more transparent and brittle with respect to PBT homopolymer. In addition, the Tg‐composition and Tm‐composition data are well subjected to the Wood equation and Flory's equation, respectively. All these copolyesters are found to consist of the general trend displayed by copolymers reported elsewhere. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Poly(butylene terephthalate‐co‐triethylene terephthalate) random copolymers of various compositions and molecular weights were synthesized in bulk and characterized in terms of their chemical structure and thermal and rheological properties. At room temperature all the copolymers were partially crystalline and showed good thermal stability. The main effect of copolymerization was a decrease in the melting and glass‐transition temperatures with respect to the poly(butylene tere‐ phthalate) homopolymer. The fusion temperatures were well correlated with the composition by the Baur equation and the equilibrium melting temperature and the heat of fusion extrapolated values for poly(butylene terephthalate) were in good agreement with those reported elsewhere. Triethylene terephthalate units were found to influence the rheological behavior in the melt, the viscosity being significantly higher than that of the poly(butylene terephthalate‐co‐diethylene terephthalate) copolymers investigated previously. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Blown films from poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) and poly(lactide) (PLA) blends were investigated. The blends were prepared in a twin‐screw extruder, in the presence of small amounts of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). The influence of DCP concentration on film blowing, rheological, mechanical, and thermal properties of the blends is reported in this article. Rheological results showed a marked increase in polymer melt strength and elasticity with the addition of DCP. As a consequence, the film homogeneity and the stability of the bubble were improved. The modified blend films, compared with the unmodified blend, showed an improvement in tensile strength and modulus with a slight loss in elongation. Fourier transform infrared and gel results revealed that chain scission and branching were more significant than crosslinking when the DCP loadings in the blends were not higher than 0.7%. A reduction in melt temperatures of PLA was observed due to difficulty in chain crystallization. The concentrations of DCP strongly affected the melting temperatures but had an insignificant effect on the decomposition behavior of the blends. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Though the structure and properties of a copolyester of 40 mole % of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and 60 mole % p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB) (PET/60PHB) and their blends have been well documented, no work has been reported in an open literature on the systematic investigation of the PET copolymers modified with broad range of p-acetoxybenzoic acid (PABA) composition as yet. In this study, several PETA-x copolyesters having various PABA compositions from 10 to 70 mole % were prepared by the melt reaction of PABA and PET without a catalyst, where x denotes the mole % of PABA. And the modified polyesters obtained were characterized by 1H-NMR spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction pattern, polarizing microscopy, thermal analysis, and rheometry. The anisotropic phase appeared when x is above 50 mole % of PABA, and especially for the x's of 60 and 70 mole %, the nematic liquid crystalline texture appeared clearly on the whole matrix. As the mole % of PABA increased, melting temperature, heat of fusion, crystalline temperature, degree of crystallinity, and the glass transition temperature of the modified PET were decreased, but the thermal stabilities of those copolyesters were increased. The dependence of melt viscosity on the shear rate for PETA-50 ∼ 70 followed the typical rheological behavior of liquid crystalline polymers. Finally, it was concluded that the PETA-x copolyesters having compositions of higher than 50 mole % of PABA exhibit the behavior of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(butylene terephthalate-co-thiodiethylene terephthalate) copolymers of various compositions were synthesized and characterized in terms of chemical structure and molecular weight. The thermal behavior was examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. All the polymers under investigation show a good thermal stability. At room temperature they appear as semicrystalline materials: the main effect of copolymerization was a lowering in the amount of crystallinity and a decrease of melting temperature with respect to homopolymers. A pure crystalline phase has been evidenced at high content of butylene terephthalate or thiodiethylene terephthalate units and Baur's equation was found to describe well the Tm-composition data. Amorphous samples (containing 50-100 mol% of thiodiethylene terephthalate units) showed a monotonic decrease of Tg as the content of sulfur-containing units is increased, due to the presence of flexible C-S-C bonds in the polymeric chain. Finally, the Fox equation described well the Tg-composition data.  相似文献

The melting behavior of poly(butylene terephthalate‐co‐diethylene terephthalate) and poly(butylene terephthalate‐co‐triethylene terephthalate) copolymers was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry after isothermal crystallization from the melt. Multiple endotherms were found for all the samples, and attributed to the melting and recrystallization processes. By applying the Hoffman‐Weeks' method, the equilibrium melting temperatures of the copolymers under investigation were obtained. Two distinct peaks in the crystallization exothermic curve were observed for all the samples. Both of them appeared at higher times than that of PBT, indicating that the introduction of a comonomer decreased the crystallization rate. The observed dependence of this latter on composition was explained on the basis of the content of ether–oxygen atoms in diethylene and triethylene terephthalate units, and of the different sizes of these units. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(trimethylene terephthalate‐co‐2‐methyl‐ ethylene terephthalate) random copolymers of various compositions were synthesized via traditional two‐step polycondensation by incorporating of 1,2‐propanediol. The molar composition of trimethylene terephthalate and 2‐methyl‐ethylene terephthalate units and chemical structure were confirmed by means of 1H‐NMR and Fourier transform infrared. The thermal properties of the copolyesters were evaluated by DSC and TGA. As far as the thermal properties is concerned, the main effect of incorporation of 1,2‐propanediol was a lowering in the melting temperature, and an increment of glass transition temperature compared to homopolymer PTT. Due to the effect of the lateral methyl groups in the polymeric chain, the thermal stability is slightly decreased as the amount of the MET units is increased. Furthermore, the crystals of PTT/MET copolyesters were observed by hot‐stage optical polarizing microscopy at the indicated crystallization temperatures. As expected, the incorporation of MET units in the polymer chain of PTT was found to decrease the dimension of the crystals. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

The crystallization kinetics of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and their copolymers poly(1,4‐butylene‐co‐ethylene terephthalate) (PBET) containing 70/30, 65/35 and 60/40 molar ratios of 1,4‐butanediol/ethylene glycol were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at crystallization temperatures (Tc) which were 35–90 °C below equilibrium melting temperature . Although these copolymers contain both monomers in high proportion, DSC data revealed for copolymer crystallization behaviour. The reason for such copolymers being able to crystallize could be due to the similar chemical structures of 1,4‐butanediol and ethylene glycol. DSC results for isothermal crystallization revealed that random copolymers had a lower degree of crystallinity and lower crystallite growth rate than those of homopolymers. DSC heating scans, after completion of isothermal crystallization, showed triple melting endotherms for all these polyesters, similar to those of other polymers as reported in the literature. The crystallization isotherms followed the Avrami equation with an exponent n of 2–2.5 for PET and 2.5–3.0 for PBT and PBETs. Analyses of the Lauritzen–Hoffman equation for DSC isothermal crystallization data revealed that PBT and PET had higher growth rate constant Go, and nucleation constant Kg than those of PBET copolymers. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Blends of poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) were prepared with various compositions by a melt‐mixing method and the phase behavior, miscibility, and morphology were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, small‐angle X‐ray scattering techniques, and polarized optical microscopy. The blend system exhibited a single glass transition over the entire composition range and its temperature decreased with an increasing weight fraction of the PBS component, but this depression was not significantly large. The DSC thermograms showed two distinct melting peaks over the entire composition range, indicating that these materials was classified as semicrystalline/semicrystalline blends. A depression of the equilibrium melting point of the PLA component was observed and the interaction parameter between PLA and PBS showed a negative value of ?0.15, which was derived using the Flory–Huggins equation. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering revealed that, in the blend system, the PBS component was expelled out of the interlamellar regions of PLA, which led to a significant decrease of a long‐period, amorphous layer thickness of PLA. For more than a 40% PBS content, significant crystallization‐induced phase separation was observed by polarized optical microscopy. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly[(butylene adipate)‐co‐terephthalate] (PBAT) are both commonly used biodegradable polymers. In this study, co‐extrusion of PLA and PBAT was used to create alternately multilayered films in order to obtain high‐flexibility PLA film. The incorporation of PBAT provides enhanced flexibility to PLA and the effect is more distinct in the PLA/PBAT multilayer film as the number of layers increases. Through differential scanning calorimetric and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering analyses, the crystallinity of PLA is shown to decrease more in the multilayer film than in the blended film. Transparency is also enhanced in the multilayer film. The fabrication of alternate multilayered film by co‐extrusion of PLA and PBAT shows a new method of preparing a flexible, transparent and fully biodegradable film, which is impossible through a blending process. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polyester‐polyether segmented block copolymers of poly[(butylene succinate)‐co‐poly(butylene terephthalate)] (PBS–PBT) and poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) (Mn = 2000) with various compositions were synthesized. PBT content in the PBS was adjusted to ca. 5 mol %. Their thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. In the case of copolymer, the melting point of the PBS–PBT control was 107.8°C, and the melting point of the copolymer containing 70 wt % of PTMG was 70.1°C. Crystallinity of soft segment was 5 ∼ 17%, and that of hard segment was 42 ∼ 59%. The breaking stress of the PBS–PTMG control was 47 MPa but it decreased with increasing PTMG content. In the case of copolymer containing 70 wt % of PTMG, breaking stress was 36 MPa. Contrary to the decreasing breaking stress, breaking strain increased from 300% for PBS–PBT control to 900% for a copolymer containing 70 wt % of PTMG. The shape recovery ratios of the copolymer containing 70 wt % PTMG were almost twice of those of copolymers containing 40 wt % PTMG. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Blends of poly(sulfone of bisphenol A) (PSU) with poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) were obtained by direct injection moulding across the composition range. The two components of the blends reacted slightly in the melt state, producing linear copolymers. The slight changes observed in the two glass transition temperatures indicate that the copolymers were present in the two amorphous phases of the blends. The observed reactions and the high viscosity of the matrix of the PSU‐rich compositions led to a very fine morphology which could not be attained in the PBT‐rich compositions due to the low viscosity of the matrix and the direct injection moulding procedure used. This procedure is fast and economically advantageous, but leads to poor mixing. The different morphologies influenced neither the modulus nor the yield stress, which tended to follow the rule of mixtures. However, the low fracture properties of the PBT‐rich compositions contrasted with the ductility behaviour, and even the impact strength of the PSU‐rich blends, which also tended to be proportional to the blend composition. The mechanical properties (tensile strength, low temperature falling weight impact strength) of XENOY CL-100 (a blend of polycarbonate and polybutylene terephthalate) have been studied. This blend is comprised of tough components and the property combinations that result may be useful for certain applications. The hydrolysis resistance of the blend in deionised water at 40°C has been studied. After 30 weeks it did not lose its tensile strength, but subsequently it did lose 50% of the low temperature (?70°C) falling weight impact strength. If the ?70°C low temperature toughness is an important quality, this should be taken into account. However, the low temperature (?70°C) falling weight impact strength of pure polycarbonate and of pure poly(butylene terephthalate) is very low, whilst XENOY CL-100 is still tough material, even after 30 weeks immersion at 40°C. Further study of the composition of XENOY CL-100 showed that this blend is composed of polycarbonate. poly(butylene terephthalate) and crosslinked acrylic rubber; traces of titanium-catalyst residue for the poly(butylene terephthalate) polymeristaion and black dye have also been found.  相似文献

Summary: To obtain a balance between toughness (as measured by notched impact strength) and elastic stiffness of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), a small amount of tetra‐functional epoxy monomer was incorporated into PBT/[ethylene/methyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer (E‐MA‐GMA)] blends during the reactive extrusion process. The effectiveness of toughening by E‐MA‐GMA and the effect of the epoxy monomer were investigated. It was found that E‐MA‐GMA was finely dispersed in PBT matrix, whose toughness was significantly enhanced, but the stiffness decreased linearly, with increasing E‐MA‐GMA content. Addition of 0.2 phr epoxy monomer was noted to further improve the dispersion of E‐MA‐GMA particles by increasing the viscosity of the PBT matrix. While use of epoxy monomer had little influence on the notched impact strength of the blends, there was a distinct increase in the elastic stiffness. SEM micrographs of impact‐fracture surfaces indicated that extensive matrix shear yielding was the main impact energy dissipation mechanism in both types of blends, with or without epoxy monomer, and containing 20 wt.‐% or more elastomer.

BACKGROUND: To obtain a biodegradable thermoplastic elastomer, a series of poly(ester‐ether)s based on poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), with various mass fractions and molecular weights of PPG, were synthesized through melt polycondensation. RESULTS: The copolyesters were characterized using 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, mechanical testing and enzymatic degradation. The results indicated that poly(ester‐ether)s with high molecular weights were successfully synthesized. The composition of the copolyesters agreed very well with the feed ratio. With increasing content of the soft PPG segment, the glass transition temperature decreased gradually while the melting temperature, the crystallization temperature and the relative degree of crystallinity decreased. Mechanical testing demonstrated that the toughness of PBS was improved significantly. The elongation at break of the copolyesters was 2–5 times that of the original PBS. Most of the poly(ester‐ether) specimens were so flexible that they were not broken in Izod impact experiments. At the same time, the enzymatic degradation rate of PBS was enhanced. Also, the difference in molecular weight of PPG led to properties being changed to some extent among the copolyesters. CONCLUSION: The synthesized poly(ester‐ether)s having excellent flexibility and biodegradability extend the application of PBS into the areas where biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers are needed.
