Provides information about the professional liability program, available to american psychological association members, which was established in 1955 and administered by the hoggatt-dawson insurance agency of champaign, illinois. The number of enrollees has grown from 254 in 1955 to 4,978 in 1971. A table providing geographical distribution of enrollees by state is presented, and it is suggested that this provides a crude measure of the distribution of psychological practice in the various states. It is noted that the overall experience with the plan has been very favorable, with no malpractice suit of an insured apa member having yet gone to trial. Program evaluation studies have concentrated on macro systems, sophisticated research designs, powerful statistics, and limited settings approaches. Such research seems to have little impact on role function or service delivery at the individual psychologist's level. Peer reviews, practice audits, and continuing education are concepts with methods that improve the effectiveness of individual psychologists, but similar concepts with methods for improving programs are few. A procedure, systematic internal review, is discussed that provides concepts and a methodology to evaluate and improve the functioning and effectiveness of programs. This approach has a direct impact on the professional life of the psychologist and the program in which he or she works. Examples of this model are provided from the perspective of an inpatient drug abuse program, but the model is applicable to multiple settings. Conducted a survey to determine how directors of school psychology programs receive their preparation and what kinds of programs they direct. 157 returned questionnaires revealed that directors came from a wide variety of preparatory departments; were predominantly men; were mostly in departments of education, where they prepared specialists for the schools; and had served as director for less than 4 yrs. A majority had had field practice. Their duties were comparable to those of directors of clinical programs. Variation in high school students' achievement in Pascal programming courses was examined as a function of individual differences in self-reported engagement in autonomous problem-solving activities and of differences in course characteristics. Also examined were relationships between course characteristics and extent of engagement in different problem-solving activities. A total of 107 students in eight introductory courses and 79 students in seven Advanced Placement (AP) courses completed questionnaires about their problem-solving activities and about characteristics of their courses as well as a criterion test requiring the reformulation of code in an existing program. Results of regression analyses indicated that student differences in problem-solving activities account for variance in criterion performance, especially in AP courses. In addition, overall, certain course characteristics were related to differences in engagement in selected problem-solving activities. Nearly 130 psychologist packed their bags, and set out to visit colleges and talk about psychology… . In the programme section 'Psychogeriatrics' of the SGO Health Research Promotion Programme a longitudinal study was carried out in Amsterdam from 1989 until 1994, concerning the course of mild cognitive decline in elderly people (the AMSTEL project). The scientific aims were the development of diagnostical instruments for the early diagnosis of dementia, the development of criteria which predict the course of mild cognitive impairment and the expansion of knowledge on the relationship between somatic and psychiatric pathology and dementia. The programme also had aims regarding medical education and patient care. The results include the following: in order to diagnose dementia in general practice questions regarding orientation and short-term memory are helpful. Risk factors for cognitive deterioration in elderly people include hippocampal atrophy on the MRI scan, a low level of education and subjective complaints regarding memory. Subjective complaints regarding memory are not primarily caused by a depressive mood, as is often thought, but are important as correct self-observations of cognitive deterioration, and go with an increased risk of developing dementia. Besides the AMSTEL project a feasibility study was carried out concerning a psychogeriatric case register in Amsterdam.  相似文献

Research productivity in the Journal of Applied Psychology (JAP) was assessed for 39 universities offering a doctoral program in industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology. Productivity ratings were subsequently compared with perceptions of I/O program quality obtained by Greenberg et al. in 1978. The results indicate that there is a very strong relation between such subjective opinions of program quality and the number of articles that a university had published in JAP before 1978. The results also reveal some changes in productivity ratings during the past 8 yrs (i.e., 1978–1985), suggesting that concurrent changes in perceptions of I/O program quality might likewise have occurred in recent times. The attempt has been made to formulate learning outcomes or educational goals for the USAFA courses in psychology in terms of knowledge and understandings, habits and skills, and attitudes and values. 2 courses are outlined: (a) basic psychology which includes consideration of Scientific Method and Measurement, Individual Differences, Growth and Development, Motivation, Emotion, and Perception, Learning and Thinking, and Adjustment and Personality; (b) psychology in the Air Force which includes Engineering Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Leadership, and Problems of Military Adjustment. Conduct of the courses includes the use of "provocative and stimulating examples and illustrative materials" and psychological films are used liberally. "Effort is made to allow all students to have some contact throughout the academic year with each of the seven instructors in the department." Classes are restricted to 12 students. Russell's summary article "Contemporary Issues of Concern to Psychologists" (1958) included a brief discussion of several possible federal solutions to the need for increased educational research with a reference to the current federal program designed to facilitate educational research: the Cooperative Research Program of the United States Office of Education. Russell indicated that the APA had expressed official interest in this program. The thought occurred that it might be of interest to know the extent to which APA members were involved in this program. For the 252 projects for which there was information available, 136 had or have one or more APA members as Project Directors. It would seem that psychologists do have an interest in the Cooperative Research Program, and are participating in this educational research enterprise. Evaluated college counseling center usage for 217 women and 593 men who had been encouraged to return to the counseling center for feedback on their freshmen tests. Students who initially approached the counseling center to request feedback on their tests were more likely to obtain counseling for non-test-related problems than were students who never requested their test results, although the mean number of counseling sessions did not differ for the 2 groups. There was a slight tendency for more men than women to request feedback prior to requesting counseling even though there were no sex differences in mean number of sessions. However, a larger proportion of men than women returned for counseling during the same semester in which they received their freshmen test results, and these men, on the average, remained longer in counseling.
