The Visiting Psychologist Program, sponsored by the American Psychological Association and supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, has two major goals: (1) to provide information on recent developments in the field to psychologists in service settings, and (2) to provide opportunities to visit and learn about field centers for psychologists with significant training, service, and research responsibilities. The specific goals of the program are to disseminate up-to-date knowledge of recent research findings and to demonstrate innovations in psychological procedures and techniques. The Visiting Psychologist Program, under which psychologists from universities and other training and service centers visit selected field settings, involves the careful selection of visiting psychologists who have something new and substantial to transmit to the field, and the determination of representative settings to be visited that do not have ready access to significant recent developments. Main topics discussed in this article include the following: (1) how the program functions; (2) selection of visiting psychologists; (3) selection of agencies; and (4) how to apply. The NIMH-sponsored Visiting Psychologist Program has completed its seventh year of operation. This program is designed to facilitate the dissemination of current knowledge generated in recent research findings and to provide for the demonstration of innovations in psychological research to mental health professionals. The program attempts to reach practitioners in service settings by offering consultation, lectures, and demonstrations by psychologists who are themselves significantly involved in research, training, and delivery of services. During the 1973-1974 program year, 49 agencies were visited, of which 38 were newly selected agencies and 11 were return visits to agencies visited the previous year. Forty-eight psychologists participated as visitors in the program. Agencies that received initial visits are listed, with their Visiting Psychologists, in Table 1. Agencies and Visiting Psychologists involved in return visits are listed in Table 2. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The Visiting Psychologist to Field Settings Program, under the sponsorship of the National Institute of Mental Health, has completed its 15th year of operation. The program continues to function as a mechanism for the dissemination of up-to-date knowledge generated in recent research findings and to provide for the demonstration of innovations in psychological procedures to mental health professionals in service settings by psychologists who are significantly involved in research, training, and the delivery of services. The number of agencies visited by the program since its inception totals over 500. During the past year, 22 agencies were visited. Since several of the agencies reviewed by the Advisory Committee requested similar areas of consultation and were in close geographical proximity to one another, the committee felt it desirable to arrange some combined agency visits in order to include as many agencies as possible in the program. Agencies that received visits are listed with their Visiting Psychologists. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In recent decades, psychologists have been actively involved in the development and evaluation of parenting programs and are now turning their attention to the implementation of these evidence-based programs in real-world contexts. In the current study, we examined administrators' reasons for adopting an evidence-based parenting program and service providers' use of and adherence to this program in community agencies. Surveys were completed online by 63 administrators and 215 service providers from 69 different agencies. Although the majority of trained service providers used the program, a significant minority (25.6%) had not delivered it since completing training. The average adherence rate reported by the service providers who used the program was 85.9%; the most common explanations provided for omitting session objectives were that they did not have enough time in session and because they did not consider the activities relevant for the parents they were seeing. Implications and suggestions for psychologists involved in the implementation of parenting programs are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Suggests that the lack of consensus within the field of school psychology concerning appropriate functions and roles for school psychologists presents a dilemma to trainers attempting to match curricula to a model of professional practice or service delivery. It is also suggested that a behavioral school psychology model can be integrated across various conceptual levels, provides a coherent philosophy of service delivery, and derives a set of practices from a strong research base. A training model based on behavioral school psychology is described, and examples from a training program are offered. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The American Psychological Foundation was established in 1953 to receive gifts from psychologists who wish to contribute to the advancement of psychology as a science and a profession in the service of knowledge and the welfare of man. Through its awards program the Foundation honors annually a senior psychologist who in his whole career has made distinguished contributions to research and scholarship (the Gold Medal Award), and it also recognizes outstanding achievements in teaching and in interpreting psychology in public media (books, newspapers, television.) Through its small grants program it supports activities of importance to psychology that would otherwise go unfunded. For example, it provides APA journals to libraries in developing nations. In addition, in appropriate cases the Foundation contributes funds to support programs of other organizations which are consistent with the purposes of the Foundation. In accordance with the Bylaws, the Foundation is placed in the hands of a Board of Trustees, consisting of the seven most recent past presidents of the APA and other members of the Association elected by the Trustees then in office. The Foundation's program depends on the concern and generosity of psychologists. Some contribute in the form of specific cash contributions. Others assign all or part of their royalties from books, particularly books that draw heavily on the work of other psychologists. Others routinely assign income from reprinting of their papers in books of readings or other collections. Some have designated the Foundation a beneficiary in their wills. Contributions are tax deductible. This article includes a list of the names of all whose contributions to the APF were received in 1973. Program evaluation is becoming increasingly important to all professional psychologists, including school psychologists. Despite a burgeoning of information about program evaluation principles, little attention has been given to program evaluation training, especially the utility of that training for program decision making. Five issues pertinent to the training of school psychologists in program evaluation are discussed: need for training, extent of training, goals of training, methods of training, and evaluation of training experiences. The material presented is based on the authors' experiences in program evaluation training at the Rutgers School Psychology Training Program. Emory L. Cowen.
Presents an overview of the career contributions of Emory L. Cowen. For his remarkable contributions to conceptual, empirical and human service advances in the fields of community and clinical psychology, community mental health and education. He has been instrumental in the creation of a field for an entire generation of psychologists. His work has changed public schools throughout the United States. His ideas, research, model programs, program evaluations, and workshops have inspired others to generate new programs that provide affordable human services to thousands of children who are otherwise unlikely to receive help. He pioneered early detection and secondary prevention research. His clear thinking and conceptual challenges have fostered the study of primary prevention and wellness in mental health, both as a field for research and as a social policy. His tireless efforts as President of APA's Division of Community Psychology, a member of the Prevention Task Panel of the President's Commission on Mental Health, and the APA Task Force on Promotion, Prevention and Intervention Alternatives in Psychology are examples of his energetic contributions to psychology in the public interest. In the early days of the "scientist-practitioner" (Boulder Model) orientation to the education of professional psychologists, clinical graduate students studied in a climate that was both exhilarating and troubled. Students were challenged to blend two strikingly different and conflictual world views, albeit without guidance from previous generations of scientist-practitioners. Accordingly, the development of a methodologically sound, and clinically relevant, research program was a heavy burden. This paper reviews the author's effort to find a research question that would recognize clinical service, achieve scholarly goals, and also satisfy yearnings for a personally exciting topic. The search led to the study of aberrations in affective (excitement) modulation that are found in schizophrenic-spectrum disorder, and thoughts about therapeutic interaction with this population. Describes the complex organizational and social conditions for conducting psychotherapy research in a state Medicaid program. Comparative data are offered on service delivery and utilization in Medicaid, the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services, and the dominant employee health plan in Hawaii. It is suggested that the reporting of these data has led to extended coverage of psychologists under Hawaii Medicaid laws. The major overlap in types of procedures used by psychologists and psychiatrists and some indications of the impact of the extended coverage of psychologists on Medicaid health care costs are described. Notes that professional psychologists should be aware of the immediate and long-range goals of the American Psychiatric Association. Their program includes (a) aggressively developing a uniform peer review program directed toward inclusion in national health insurance, (b) lobbying for federal funds in order to conduct research on the efficacy of psychiatry, and (c) consolidating services by concentrating on more traditional psychiatry based on the medical model--pharmacology, neurology, forensic psychiatry. Their representatives indicated that they were not interested in being "just another psychologist or social worker." To combat this attack, psychologists must be well trained in distinguishing the unique aspects of their profession and in conducting themselves with appropriate decorum.
