Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes have been widely used in microfiltration and ultrafiltration because of their excellent chemical resistance and thermal properties. However, PVDF membranes have exhibited severe membrane fouling because of their hydrophobic properties. In this study, we investigated the antifouling properties of PVDF blended membranes. Antifouling PVDF blended membranes were prepared with a PVDF‐g‐poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (POEM) graft copolymer. The PVDF‐g‐POEM graft copolymer was synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. The chemical structure and properties of the synthesized PVDF‐g‐POEM graft copolymer were determined by NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. To investigate the antifouling properties of the membranes, we prepared microfiltration membranes by using the phase‐inversion method, which uses various PVDF/PVDF‐g‐POEM concentrations in dope solutions. The pure water permeabilities were obtained at various pressures. The PVDF/PVDF‐g‐POEM blended membranes exhibited no irreversible fouling in the dead‐end filtration of foulants, including bovine serum albumin, sodium alginate, and Escherichia coli broth. However, the hydrophobic PVDF membrane exhibited severe fouling in comparison with the PVDF/PVDF‐g‐POEM blended membranes. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

A study is presented of the grafting of poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) from polymeric macroinitiator films to form well-defined polymer brushes, using activators generated/regenerated by electron transfer (AGET/ARGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Polymer brush coatings can potentially be obtained on surfaces of virtually any shape and composition, because of the ease of conformal casting of the anchoring macroinitiator film. Polymer brush coatings are synthesized in a robust way, as ARGET and AGET ATRP require little to no deoxygenation and make use of stable catalysts. The monomer, catalyst, ligand and reducing agent concentrations, the amount and type of initiating moiety in the anchoring films, and the choice of solvents are optimized, resulting in control over the rate of reaction, and the molecular weight of poly(PEGMA). The best conditions are determined for the formation of a poly(PEGMA) brush with high grafting density, controlled thickness and “living” ends available for post-functionalization.  相似文献

A combination of coordination polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was applied to a novel synthesis of rod–brush block copolymers. The procedure included the following steps: (1) the monoesterification reaction of ethylene glycol with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) yielded the bifunctional initiator monobromobutyryloxy ethylene glycol and (2) a trichlorocyclopentadienyl titanium (CpTiCl3; bifunctional initiator) catalyst was prepared from a mixture of CpTiCl3 and bifunctional initiator. The coordination polymerization of n-butyl isocyanate initiated by such a catalyst provided a well-defined macroinitiator, poly(n-butyl isocyanate)–bromine (PBIC–Br). (3) The ATRP method of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate initiated by PBIC–Br provided rod [poly(n-butyl isocyanate) (PBIC)]–coil [poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA)] block copolymers with a CuCl/CuCl2/2,2′-bipyridyl catalyst. (4) The esterfication of PBIC-block-PHEMA with BIBB yielded a block-type macroinitiator, and (5) ATRP of methyl methacrylate with a block-type macroinitiator provided rod–brush block copolymers. We found from the solution properties that such rod–brush block copolymers formed nanostructured macromolecules in solution. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

The synthesis and properties of crosslinked diblock copolymers for use as proton‐conducting membranes are presented. A polystyrene‐b‐poly(hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer at 56 : 44 wt % was sequentially synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization. The poly(hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) block was thermally crosslinked by sulfosuccinic acid (SA) via the esterification reaction between  OH of PHEMA and  COOH of SA. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transfer infrared spectra revealed the successful synthesis of the diblock copolymer and the crosslinking reaction under the thermal condition of 120°C for 1 h. The ion‐exchange capacity continuously increased from 0.25 to 0.98 mequiv/g with increasing SA concentration because of the increasing number of charged groups in the membrane. However, the water uptake increased up to an SA concentration of 7.6 wt %, above which it decreased monotonically (maximum water uptake ∼ 27.6%). The membrane also exhibited a maximum proton conductivity of 0.045 S/cm at an SA concentration of 15.2 wt %. The maximum behavior of the water uptake and proton conductivity with respect to the SA concentration was considered to be due to a competitive effect between the increase of ionic sites and the crosslinking reaction according to the SA concentration. All the membranes were thermally quite stable at least up to 250°C, presumably because of the block‐copolymer‐based, crosslinked structure of the membranes. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, silver nanoparticles were synthesized with an amphiphilic diblock copolymer, polystyrene‐block‐poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) (PS‐b‐PVP), as a template film. First, microphase‐separated amphiphilic PS‐b‐PVP (70 : 30 wt %) was synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization. The self‐assembled block copolymer film was used to template the growth of silver nanoparticles by the introduction of a silver trifluoromethanesulfonate precursor and an ultraviolet irradiation process. The in situ formation of silver nanoparticles with an average size of 4–6 nm within the block copolymer template film was confirmed with transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy also demonstrated the selective incorporation and in situ formation of silver nanoparticles within the hydrophilic poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) domains, which were mostly due to the stronger interaction strength of the silver with the carbonyl oxygens of poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) in the block copolymer. This work provides a simple route for the in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles within a polymer film. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2008  相似文献

Three novel iniferter reagents were synthesized and used as initiators for the polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) in the presence of copper(I) bromide and N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine at 90 and 115°C, respectively. All the polymerizations were well controlled, with a linear increase in the number‐average molecular weights during increased monomer conversions and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight ≤ 1.36) throughout the polymerization processes. The polymerization rate of MMA was faster in bulk than that in solution and was influenced by the different polarities of the solvents. A slight change in the chemical structures of the initiators had no obvious effect on the polymerization rates of MMA and St. The initiator efficiency toward MMA was lower than that toward St. The results of 1H‐NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrum analysis, and chain‐extension experiments demonstrated that well‐defined poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene bearing photolabile groups could be obtained via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with three iniferter reagents as initiators. The polymerization mechanism for this novel initiation system was a common ATRP process. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

The synthesis of triblock copolymer poly(octadecyl acrylate‐b‐styrene‐b‐octadecyl acrylate), using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), is reported. The copolymers were prepared in two steps. First, polystyrene was synthesized by ATRP using α,α′‐dichloro‐p‐xylene/CuBr/bpy as the initiating system; Second, polystyrene was further used as macroinitiator for the ATRP of octadecyl acrylate to prepare ABA triblock copolymers in the presence of FeCl2·4H2O/PPh3 in toluene. Polymers with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 17,000–23,400) and low polydispersity index value (1.33–1.44) were obtained. The relationship between molecular weight versus conversion showed a straight line. The effect of reaction temperature on polymerization was also investigated, showing a faster polymerization rate under higher temperature. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H‐NMR, DSC, and GPC and the crystallization behavior of the copolymers was also studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The bulk autopolymerization of styrene (St) was successfully conducted in the presence of CuCl2 and 2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy) at 110 and 130°C. We found that this polymerization was a living/controlled radical polymerization at a [St]0/[CuCl2]0/[bpy]0 ratio of 54:1:2.5. The resulting number‐average molecular weights linearly increased with conversion, and the polydispersity indices were very narrow (<1.5). The polymerization rate increased with temperature. Increasing the ratios (i.e., 129:1:2.5, 259:1:2.5, and 386:1:2.5) led to a decrease in the ability to control the autopolymerization of St, even uncontrolled polymerization (i.e., 643:1:2.5). The analysis of end groups by 1H‐NMR indicated that the spontaneous generation of radicals from St were generated by a Mayo‐type process, and this living/controlled radical polymerization might have underwent a reverse atom‐transfer radical polymerization process. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A graft copolymer of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with a glucose‐carrying methacrylate, 3‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2:5,6‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐D ‐glucofuranose, was synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization technique with commercial PVDF as the macroinitiator. After a treatment with 88% formic acid, the isopropylidenyl groups of the precursor graft copolymer [poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐g‐poly(3‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2:5,6‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐ D ‐glucofuranose)] were converted into hydroxyl groups, and this produced an amphiphilic graft copolymer (PVDF‐g‐PMAG) [poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐g‐poly(3‐O‐methacryloyl‐α,β‐D‐glucopyranose)] with glycopolymer side chains and a narrow molecular weight distribution (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.29). This glucose‐carrying graft copolymer was characterized with Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. A novel porous membrane prepared from blends of PVDF with PVDF‐g‐PMAG via an immersion–precipitation technique exhibited significantly enhanced hydrophilicity and an anti‐protein‐adsorption property. The surface chemical composition and morphology of the membrane were studied with X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The combination of radical‐promoted cationic polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click chemistry was employed for the efficient preparation of poly(cyclohexene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PCHO‐b‐PSt). Alkyne end‐functionalized poly(cyclohexene oxide) (PCHO‐alkyne) was prepared by radical‐promoted cationic polymerization of cyclohexene oxide monomer in the presence of 1,2‐diphenyl‐2‐(2‐propynyloxy)‐1‐ethanone (B‐alkyne) and an onium salt, namely 1‐ethoxy‐2‐methylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate, as the initiating system. The B‐alkyne compound was synthesized using benzoin photoinitiator and propargyl bromide. Well‐defined bromine‐terminated polystyrene (PSt‐Br) was prepared by ATRP using 2‐oxo‐1,2‐diphenylethyl‐2‐bromopropanoate as initiator. Subsequently, the bromine chain end of PSt‐Br was converted to an azide group to obtain PSt‐N3 by a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction. Then the coupling reaction between the azide end group in PSt‐N3 and PCHO‐alkyne was performed with Cu(I) catalysis in order to obtain the PCHO‐b‐PSt block copolymer. The structures of all polymers were determined. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Atom transfer radical polymerization has been a very useful method in the recent advances in controlled radical polymerization. It needs an activated alkyl halide as an initiator and a copper halide as a catalyst. This investigation reports the successful application of copper thiocyanate, a catalyst with a pseudohalide anion, in the presence of different ligands such as N,N,N=,N,N?,N?‐hexamethyltriethylenetetramine (HMTETA), pentyl‐2‐pyridylmethaneimine, and substituted bipyridine in the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene. Among the three ligands used, HMTETA was found to be very efficient. The polymers were characterized with 13C‐NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography analysis. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization of n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) was conducted in an aqueous dispersed system with different kinds of copper complexes. The partitioning behavior of the copper complexes, including CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipydine (dNbpy), CuCl2/dNbpy, CuCl/2,2′‐bipydine (bpy), CuCl2/bpy, CuCl/bis(N,N′‐dimethylaminoethyl)ether (bde), and CuCl2/bde between the monomer (BMA), and water was studied in detail with ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy. The results show that with a less hydrophobic ligand, such as bpy or bde, most of the Cu(I) or the Cu(II) complexes migrated from the BMA phase to the aqueous phase, the atom transfer equilibrium was destroyed, and the polymerization was nearly not controlled; it converted to classical emulsion polymerization. As to the very hydrophobic ligand dNbpy, although the partitioning study of the copper complexes indicated that not all the copper species were restricted to the organic phase, the linear correlation between the molecular weight and the monomer conversion and the narrow polydispersities confirmed that the polymerization was still quite well controlled. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This investigation reports the preparation of tailor-made ABA triblock copolymers (BCP) of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (PEHA) and dicyclopentenyloxyethyl methacrylate (PDCPMA) bearing pendant reactive cycloalkenyl functionality via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and thiol-ene modification of the pendant reactive bicycloalkenyl functionality. The chemical structure and molar composition of the polymers were determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy and molecular weights of the polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. AFM as well as DSC analysis showed nanophase-separated morphology in the block copolymers. The pendant reactive bicycloalkenyl group of PDCPMA in the BCPs was successfully modified by thiol-ene reaction and the mechanical properties of the modified BCPs were studied. The thiol modified BCP showed much greater adhesion strength compared to pristine BCP as determined by lap shear test using a UTM. Hardness of the BCP film and UV-cured thiolated BCP film was studied and compared by using a nanoindenter.  相似文献

Block copolymerization of 2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was studied in methanol using a macroinitiator method and a “one‐pot” sequential addition method. The polymerization sequence of the two monomers strongly affected the block copolymer formation. When DMAEMA was used as the first monomer, both methods produced block copolymer samples containing significant amounts of DMAEMA homopolymer chains, because of the elimination of active halogen chain‐ends during the preparation of polyDMAEMA. Well‐controlled block copolymers with various block lengths were obtained via the macroinitiator method when polyHEMA was used as macroinitiator to initiate the polymerization of DMAEMA. The sequential addition method, in which HEMA was polymerized first with 90% conversion and DMAEMA was subsequently added, also yielded controlled block copolymers when the polymerization was carried out at room temperature with the DMAEMA conversion below 60%. Increasing the temperature to 60 °C promoted the copolymerization rate but the reaction suffered from gel formation. The addition of water to the system accelerated the polymerization rate, but led to the loss of the system livingness.

Microwave irradiation (MI) was applied to the atom transfer radical bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The influence of the amount of the refluxing solvent used for controlling the polymerization temperature, irradiation power, irradiation time, and initiator concentration on the conversion, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution of the polymers was studied with a benzyl chloride/cuprous chloride/2,2′‐bipyridyl initiation system and compared with the corresponding conventional heating (CH) process. In comparison with CH, the results can be summarized as follows. The polymerization rate for reaching 70% conversion increased 2.6–5.1 times under an irradiation power of 270–630 W. The apparent increasing rate constant was much larger than that with CH and increased with the irradiation power. MI produced a higher polymerization rate and conversion even if the concentration of the initiation system was very low (initial monomer concentration/initial initiator concentration = 200:0.33 mol/mol) and the polydispersity index (DI) was narrower; however, CH yielded almost no polymers. MI promoted the activities of the catalyst and monomer, and its initiation efficiency was higher than that with CH and increased with the irradiation power. MI obviously played an important role in promoting the polymerization rate of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). MI reduced the concentration of the initiation system and perhaps made ATRP controlled (cf. uncontrolled ATRP with CH); at the same time, it made the DI values of the polymers narrower. In comparison with the initiation efficiencies found with benzyl bromide and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile used as initiators, the initiation efficiency with p‐toluene sulfonyl chloride used as an initiator was higher; moreover, DI was much narrower (1.17), and the polymerization rate was greater. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Homopolymer brushes of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA), poly(methoxyethylacrylamide) (PMEA) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM) grown on atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator functionalized latex particles were used as macroinitiators for the synthesis of PDMA-b-PNIPAM/PMEA, PMEA-b-PDMA/PNIPAM and PNIPAM-b-PDMA block copolymer brushes by surface initiated aqueous ATRP. The grafted homopolymer and block copolymer brushes were analyzed for molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, chain grafting density, composition and hydrodynamic thickness (HT) using gel permeation chromatography-multi-angle laser light scattering, 1H NMR, particle size analysis and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The measured graft molecular weight increased following the second ATRP reaction in all cases, indicating the second block had been added. Chain growth depended on the nature of the monomer used for block copolymerization and its concentration. Unimodal distribution of polymer chains in GPC with non-overlap of molar mass-elution volume curves implied an efficient block copolymerization. This was supported by the increase in HT measured by particle size analysis, equilibrium thickness observed by AFM and the composition of the block copolymer layer by 1H NMR analysis, both in situ and on cleaved chains in solution. 1H NMR analysis of the grafted latex and cleaved polymers from the surface demonstrated that accurate determination of the copolymer composition by this method is possible without detaching polymer chains from surface. Block copolymer brushes obey the same power law dependence of HT on molecular weight as homopolymer brushes in good solvent conditions. The NIPAM-containing block copolymer brushes were sensitive to changes in the environment as shown by a decrease in HT with increase in the temperature of the medium.  相似文献

The chemoenzymatic synthesis of a novel diblock copolymer consisting of a hydrocarbon block of polycaprolactone (PCL) and an epoxy‐based block of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was achieved by the combination of enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A trichloromethyl‐terminated PCL macrointiator was obtained via Novozyme 435‐catalyzed eROP of ε‐caprolactone from a bifunctional initiator, 2,2,2‐trichloroethanol, under anhydrous conditions. PCL‐b‐PGMA diblock copolymers were synthesized in a subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate. The kinetics analysis of ATRP indicated a ‘living’/controlled radical polymerization. The macromolecular structure and thermal properties of the PCL macroinitiator and of the diblock copolymer were characterized using NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The well‐defined PCL‐b‐PGMA amphiphilic diblock copolymer self‐assembled in aqueous solution into nanoscale micelles. The size and shape of the resulting micelles were investigated using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy. Well-defined statistical, gradient and block copolymers consisting of isobornyl acrylate (IBA) and n-butyl acrylate (nBA) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). To investigate structure-property correlation, copolymers were prepared with systematically varied molecular weights and compositions. Thermomechanical properties of synthesized materials were analyzed via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Glass transition temperature (Tg) of the resulting statistical poly(isobornyl acrylate-co-n-butyl acrylate) (P(IBA-co-nBA)) copolymers was tuned by changing the monomer feed. This way, it was possible to generate materials which can mimic thermal behavior of several homopolymers, such as poly(t-butyl acrylate) (PtBA), poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) and poly(n-propyl acrylate) (PPA). Although statistical copolymers had the same thermal properties as their homopolymer equivalents, DMA measurements revealed that they are much softer materials. While statistical copolymers showed a single Tg, block copolymers showed two Tgs and DSC thermogram for the gradient copolymer indicated a single, but very broad, glass transition. The mechanical properties of block and gradient copolymers were compared to the statistical copolymers with the same IBA/nBA composition.  相似文献

Silica (SiO2)‐crosslinked polystyrene (PS) particles possessing photofunctional N,N‐diethyldithiocarbamate (DC) groups on their surface were prepared by the free‐radical emulsion copolymerization of a mixture of SiO2 (diameter = 20 nm), styrene, divinyl benzene, 4‐vinylbenzyl N,N‐diethyldithiocarbamate (VBDC), and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate with a radical initiator under UV irradiation. In this copolymerization, the inimer VBDC had the formation of a hyperbranched structure by a living radical mechanism. The particle sizes of such core–shell structures [number‐average particle diameter (Dn) = 35–40 nm] were controlled by the variation of the feed amounts of the monomers and surfactant, or emulsion system. The size distributions were relatively narrow (weight‐average particle diameter/Dn ≈ 1.05). These particles had DC groups on their surface. Subsequently, poly(methyl methacrylate) brush encapsulated SiO2 particles were synthesized by the grafting from a photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization approach of methyl methacrylate initiated by SiO2‐crosslinked PS particles as a macroinitiator. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
