The importance of computer aided measurement techniques as a means of controlling industrial manufacturing and testing technical products with high accuracy is increasing ever more with the general goal of improving the quality of all kinds of products. This development started about twenty years ago and is still improving. There is also rapid development in biomedical technique and this demands the application of modern computerized measurement techniques and measuring devices. Especially computer aided co-ordinate metrology can be applied as a very important and universal tool for solving complex measuring tasks for workpiece metrology, to evaluate the measuring results to give the basis for the improvement and optimization of future work in the biomedical technique.     

Polymere für Anwendungen in der integrierten Optik — ein Überblick mit ausgewählten Beispielen

Within this paper the development of special polymers for their use in integrated optics is shown exemplarily for selected optical devices (thermooptical switches and arrayed waveguide gratings). Emphasis is put on long-range data transfer in a wavelength region around 1,550 µm. Fluorinated polyacrylates, polycyanurates and triazine-containing reactive polymers were investigated.     

Moderne Informationstechnologien für die Steuerung von Transport und Verkehr

Intelligent transport systems are still in a stage of system introduction considering the existing market situation. Therefore there is the need to develop transport concepts acceptable to the political decision makers within which transport telematics provides contributions and on the basis of which then traffic control strategies and technical systems can be designed. The chances of transport telematics are shown for traveller information, traffic control and management. The functional, technical and institutional aspects of transport telematics are then discussed.

The competition caused by the liberalization of the energy market forces the operators of transverse compound systems to use all technically possible and economically meaningful rationalization potentials more strongly than so far. Apart from the improvement of the technical processes in the production systems a special meaning comes to the optimal planning of the application of the power stations. Already at small power supply systems an EDP-supported editing of data and information from the enterprise process and the system inventory becomes inevitable due to the complexity and the ever growing information obligations to officials.     

GSM-R — ein digitales Funknetz für die europäischen Eisenbahnen

For the interoperability of the European high speed railway networks a common radio communication platform is necessary. The European railway operators decided to use GSM as a platform for this new radio system. The newly defined standard is called GSM-R. In addition to the well known GSM features new functionalities had to be specified. Trial networks were built and the standard was tested in these networks. The first commercial operation of GSM-R is expected in 2000.     

Computermodelle für Mikrowellenleistungstransistoren

Coming cell phone systems like UMTS or digital audio broadcast (DAB) systems impose high demands on transmitter amplifier linearity. Analytical models of the microwave transistors used in the driver and power amplifier stages are necessary to describe the large signal behavior for design optimization. This paper shows how DC-IV and small signal measurements are used to generate a large signal model of microwave power transistors. Effects that have special influence on transmitter amplifiers will be emphasized.     

Sensorintegration für Industrie-Robotersteuerungen

Robot applications applying external sensors can only be implemented with limitations using an industrial robot controller, or have to make use of a special controller. The presented activities of EMST aim at the development of an open and flexible robot control system suiting well for sensor applications. The main aspect of research is a sensor integration in an industrial control system being able to perform fast and complex interactions with robot movement.     

Referenzarchitektur für Zugangsserver in öffentlichen Funknetz-Hotspots

This paper introduces an access server developed at the Institute of Broadband Communications at Vienna University of Technology, which can be used for an IEEE 802.11 conformant public wireless network infrastructure. Customers are able to gain Internet access at so called hotspots. It is expected that the idea of roaming, which is already known from cellular mobile telephone networks, will play an important role in the near future. This puts new demands on network access servers like standardized and secure authentication and accounting of mobile customers.

In a European comparison, liberalization in Austria has given the small country a wide range of providers and brought hard competition to the telecom operators. Today information technology and telecommunications have long been an inseparable unity, and globally the ICT branch has become a key factor in guaranteeing high quality standards for Austria as a place to do business. In this scenario we need political incentives for infrastructure investments and national solidarity for broadband by politics, industry and research, to be able to keep step with the speed of international development.

Das TU-Kooperationszentrum für Katastrophen-vorbeugung und Sicherheit in Bauten

The Cooperation Center for Disaster Mitigation and Security in Buildings as an interdisciplinary academic facility of the Vienna University of Technology (VUT) aims at the goal to carry out “research for the benefit of mankind”. It takes place in the framework of practice oriented and society relevant research projects of complex quality, which require a close cooperation between the various disciplines. Because of the increasing number of hazards caused by the violating forces of nature the Vienna University of Technology has made research driven education a new focal point for students of the Department of Architecture in cooperation with experts of disaster mitigation. By means of an agreement and through joint projects in cooperation with the University of Tokyo, since 1981 the Vienna University of Technology has had a close relation with Japan, which similarly to Austria is a natural hazard prone country. The so-called Key Station of the VUT plays an important role by continuously maintaining the prerequisites of scientific cooperation with Japan and by directing research activities, as well. An actual theme is the Niigata-Project, which will be carried out in the framework of the official program “Japan — EU Year of People-to-People Exchanges 2005” on the occasion of the disastrous earthquake in Japan 2004. Some of the disaster mitigation projects on the fields earthquake, tsunami, flood, avalanche and landslide carried out by students of the VUT are presented.
