Jerusalem artichoke is an important plant for industrial inulin production. Jerusalem artichoke extract was clarified by ultra-filtration. Tests were performed to investigate effects of membrane pore size and operation conditions (trans-membrane pressure and rotation speed) on filtration kinetics and membrane-fouling mechanism. Membrane fouling was proved the main filtration resistance for a 20-kDa membrane, while concentration polarization-induced resistance was dominant for 30-, 50-, and 100-kDa membranes. Despite their similar filtration behavior, the 50-kDa membrane, compared to the 100-kDa membrane, led to less protein content (impurity) in the filtrate. Studies with the rotation speed varied from 0 to 1600 rpm and trans-membrane pressure from 0.2 to 0.4 MPa demonstrated that stirring was essential for elimination of membrane fouling. Competition of driving force and fouling was justified when trans-membrane pressure increased from 0.3 to 0.4 MPa. Filtrate analysis including protein removal, turbidity, and inulin purity revealed that ultra-filtration using the 50-kDa membrane with a trans-membrane pressure of 0.3 MPa and a rotation speed of 800 rpm was able to clarify the Jerusalem artichoke extract, removing 99% protein, and obtain a filtrate with inulin purity of 98%.  相似文献

Purification of raw sugar beet juice expressed at ambient temperature (20 °C) from pretreated sugar beet slices by pulsed electric field (E = 600 V·cm 1, tPEF = 10 ms, T = 20 °C) was studied on the laboratory scale by dead-end ultrafiltration tests. Polyethersulfone (PES) and Regenerated Cellulose (RC) membranes with the same nominal molecular weight cut-off of 30 kDa were used. Experiments were carried out in unstirred and stirred (at rotation speed of 500 rpm) mode at constant trans-membrane pressure of 2 bar. The effects of the membrane polymer (Polyethersulfone and Regenerate Cellulose) on the filtration flux and the permeate quality were studied. In order to identify the fouling mechanism, the filtration kinetics was modeled using combined fouling models. Results showed that the filtration productivity (filtration flux) and selectivity (rejection ratio of impurities) depended on the membrane polymer. The juice filterability was better with Regenerated Cellulose (RC) membrane while the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane ensured a better retention of impurities (colorants, proteins and colloids), leading to a higher juice purity. Experimental and models data adjustment showed that combined models were preferable to investigate the fouling mechanism for both unstirred and stirred filtration. The desirable sugar purity (95–96%) of filtrate implies the potential application of a novel process (PEF treatment-cold pressing-ultrafiltration) for sugar industrial production.Industrial relevancePre-treatment by pulsed electric field PEF allowed cold or mild extraction of sucrose from sugar beet roots. The combination of PEF and ultra-filtration allowed high yield sucrose extraction and purification with less energy consumption. Membrane fouling analysis led to better filtration producibility. The obtained data can be useful for optimization of the sucrose production with high yield in industrial extraction processes.  相似文献

Clarification is the first step of inulin production from chicory juice, and membrane filtration as an alternative can greatly simplify this process, increase juice yield, improve product quality, and reduce the cost and waste volume. In this study, a rotating disk module (RDM) was used to investigate the clarification of chicory juice by four micro- and ultrafiltration membranes. Compared with dead end filtration, the RDM had a much higher permeate flux and product quality. High rotating speeds produced high permeate fluxes and reduced flux decline, because of the strong back transport of foulant from fouling layer to feed solution. At high rotating speeds of 1500–2000 rpm, the permeate flux increased with membrane pore size and transmembrane pressure (TMP), while at low rotating speeds (<1000 rpm), permeate flux was independent of membrane type and TMP due to a thick deposited fouling layer as a dominant filtration resistance, while carbohydrate transmission decreased at higher TMP because of denser cake layer as an additional selective membrane. The highest carbohydrate transmission (∼98%) and desirable permeate turbidity (2.4 NTU) was obtained at a TMP of 75 kPa and a rotating speed of 2000 rpm for FSM0.45PP membrane. With the RDM, the Volume Reduction Ratio (VRR) could reach 10 with a high permeate flux (106 L m−2 h−1) in the concentration test, and permeate was still rich in carbohydrate and well clarified. Chemical cleaning with 0.5% P3-ultrasil 10 detergent solution was able to recover 90% water flux of fouled membrane.  相似文献

Alternative process of sugar beet transformation is investigated by tuning experimental conditions. A three-step process has been set-up: (1) sugar beet cossettes pretreatment by pulsed electric field (PEF) and (or) short preheating to different temperatures; (2) extraction of juice from pre-treated cossettes by pressing; and (3) purification of the expressed juice by ultrafiltration. The PEF treatment was applied to cold (10 °C) and preheated (to 20, 50, 60, 70, and 80 °C) sugar beet cossettes with intensity of E?=?600 V cm?1 using rectangular monopolar pulses of 100 μs during t PEF?=?5–20 ms. Experiments were performed with cossettes of three sizes. Control experiments were done without PEF treatment using cold (10 °C) and preheated (to 20–80 °C) cossettes. PEF-treated and (or) preheated cossettes were pressed at 5 bars during 15 min. Afterward, expressed juices obtained from the PEF-treated cossettes at 20 °C and from the untreated ones at 80 °C were purified by dead-end ultrafiltration with stirring (500 rpm) at the temperature of 20 °C by using polyethersulfone membrane with MWCO of 30 kDa. Application of PEF (E?=?600 V cm?1, t PEF?=?10 ms, T?=?20 °C) with following pressing of cossettes at 5 bars during 15 min permits to obtain the juice yield Y?=?66,5 %, which is equivalent to that obtained from cossettes preheated to 80 °C and untreated electrically (Y?=?64 %). The energy consumption of cold PEF treatment (≈2–3 Wh/kg) is very attractive as compared to preheating at high temperatures (≈138–194 Wh/kg). Combination of thermal and electrical pretreatments leads to additional softening of sugar beet tissue and to a slightly higher (on 5–10 %) juice yield, but the electroporation of preheated cossettes is more energetically costly. The raw juice expressed from PEF-treated cossettes at 20 °C has higher purity (93.5 %) than juices expressed at 50 °C (92.9 %) and at 80 °C (92.3 %). The temperature increasing from 20 to 80 °C results in a higher juice coloration (5680 IU at 20 °C and 7820 IU at 80 °C) and leads to a higher (on about 35 %) colloids concentration in the expressed juice. The filtrate obtained from the juice expressed at 20 °C with PEF treatment has a higher purity (96 %) than the filtrate obtained from the juice expressed at 80 °C (95.3 %) and its coloration is considerably lower (330 IU versus 1930 IU). In addition, the quantity of proteins and colloids in the filtrate of juice expressed at 20 °C is lower than that in the filtrate of juice expressed at 80 °C  相似文献

The effects of membrane property on the permeate flux, membrane fouling and quality of clarified pineapple juice were studied. Both microfiltration (membrane pore size of 0.1 and 0.2 μm) and ultrafiltration (membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 30 and 100 kDa) membranes were employed. Membrane filtration did not have significant effects on the pH, reducing sugar and acidity of clarified juice whereas the suspended solids and microorganism were completely removed. The 0.2 μm membrane gave the highest permeate flux, total vitamin C content, total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity as well as the highest value of irreversible fouling. Based on these results, the membrane with pore size of 0.2 μm was considered to be the most suitable membrane for the clarification of pineapple juice. The optimum operating conditions for the clarification pineapple juice by membrane filtration was a cross-flow velocity of 3.4 ms−1 and transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 0.7 bar. An average flux of about 37 lm−2 h−1 was obtained during the microfiltration of pineapple juice under the optimum conditions using batch concentration mode.  相似文献

An experimental unit to study heat-transfer characteristics while boiling at subatmospheric pressure of a horizontal smooth spinning disc was designed and built. Evaporation experiments were carried out with the speed of rotation varying from 0 to 1000 rpm and the feed flow rate from 1 to 5 litre/min. The boiling temperature varied between 40 and 50 °C. Water and corn syrup were used as test liquids. Results are presented from the experimental measurement of the heat flux on the disc as a function of the wall superheat. The heat-transfer coefficient for water, in the low range of heat flux (10–30 kW/m2), increased from about 2 to 9 kW/m2K when the speed of rotation increased from 0 rpm to 1000 rpm. In the upper range of heat flux (60–100 kW/m2), it increased from about 5 to 16 kW/m2K for the same increase in the speed of rotation. The feed flow rate between 1 and 5 litre/min had no significant influence on the heat-transfer coefficient in the range of 200–600 rpm. With the 60 °Brix corn syrup, the heat-transfer coefficient at 10 °C temperature difference increased from about 0.8 to about 2.3 kW/m2K when the speed of rotation increased from 0 to 1000 rpm. A simple theoretical relation was derived which predicts the heat-transfer coefficient for water at inlet Reynolds numbers 500–1000 relatively well, but underpredicts the results for corn syrup at inlet Reynolds numbers 10–100.  相似文献

The purpose of this work is theoretical and experimental evaluation of fouling effects on flux performance in clarification of freshly squeezed orange juice by cross-flow microfiltration. To identify optimum operating conditions to minimize fouling effects, juice was microfiltered on a laboratory scale plant varying axial velocity and transmembrane pressure difference. The observed flux decay was modeled using a modified form of the differential equation used to describe classical dead-end filtration processes. The mechanism of fouling during cross-flow microfiltration was identified by estimation of the model parameters according to a nonlinear regression optimization procedure. Analysis of the results revealed that the separation process is controlled by a cake filtration fouling mechanism as the juice is fed at relatively low velocity (i.e., Re = 5000) and the system is operated at low transmembrane pressure difference. In these operating conditions the permeate flux decays within the first 20–30 min to gradually achieve a limit value. At higher Reynolds number (Re = 15,000), an increase in applied transmembrane pressure (i.e., from 0.3 to 1 bar) allows the limit permeate flux to increase by a factor of about 4. In these conditions the filtration process is controlled by a complete pore blocking fouling mechanism, and the permeate flux becomes approximately invariant with respect to time, and a negligible decay may be observed. Evaluation of specific energy consumption involved in the filtration process is reported.  相似文献

Detailed comparison of various properties (concentration of soluble solids, purity, nature of impurities, coloration and filterability) of sugar beet juices obtained by pulsed electric field (PEF) assisted “cold” extraction (T = 30 and 50 °C) and classical “hot” extraction (T = 70 °C) was done. It was shown that application of PEF-assisted “cold” extraction results in lower concentration of colloidal impurities (especially, pectins), lower coloration and better filterability of juice. Concentration of various colorants and their intermediates decreased significantly with decreasing of the extraction temperature from 70 °C to 30 °C. Filtrate obtained by dynamic filtration of juice extracted with PEF treatment had a high purity (95.3 ± 0.4%) and low coloration (1.2×103 IU). Obtained data suggest that PEF-assisted “cold” extraction is a promising method for preparation of sugar beet juices with high purity.  相似文献

In order to reach a high volume reduction ratio (VRR) prior to drying of skim milk, a membrane cascade comprising of an ultrafiltration (UF) coupled with a nanofiltration (NF) can be applied. The present study investigated the impact of processing (filtration temperature, transmembrane pressure (TMP)) and product (feed pH) parameters on the NF of skim milk UF permeate. It could be shown that a low filtration temperature of 10 °C is more advantageous in terms of flux stability and rejection of the solute fraction as compared to higher filtration temperatures up to 45 °C. The solution pH did not affect permeate flux and lactose retention. However, in order to avoid calcium losses, it is more favorable to conduct the concentration at a pH of 6.8 instead of at a lower pH of 5. The application of a higher TMP (up to 4 MPa) enhances permeate flux and VRR as well as solute rejection during concentration of UF permeate. It was also shown that the retention of solutes decreases towards the end of the concentration process. As a consequence, the achievement of high final VRR must be weighed against increased product losses at the end.  相似文献

Recovery of sugars from cane molasses is a promising approach to increase the added value of molasses and reduce its environmental pollution. In this work, for the first time, nanofiltration (NF) was used for the separation of sucrose and reducing sugar in cane molasses by a cascade diafiltration-concentration process. The retention difference between sucrose and reducing sugar by all the tested NF membranes was not distinct at 25 °C, while due to the thermal-induced pore size change and enhanced solute diffusivity, the NF retention behavior changed significantly at 60 °C, and the DL membrane with a sucrose retention of 96% and a reducing sugar retention 5% was selected for the process optimization and modeling. High temperature (55–60 °C), low permeate flux (below 15 Lm?2 h?1), and high sugar concentration resulted in a low retention of reducing sugar due to the dominant diffusive mass transfer, which was desirable for the molasses separation by NF. Mathematical modeling could well predict the diafiltration and concentration processes if using right sugar retention data. The deviations between prediction lines and experimental data in the cross-flow filtration of real solution were mainly caused by the permeate flux variation rather than membrane fouling. After diafiltration, the ratio of sucrose in total molasses sugar increased from 76.1 to 87.9%, while in the permeate of the second concentration step, the ratio of sucrose was only 2.4%. Thus, the retentate of diafiltration could be directly used for sucrose crystallization to avoid the accumulation of reducing sugar and salts, and the permeate of the second concentration step could be concentrated by NF270 at room temperature to produce syrup drinking.  相似文献

Purification of the sugar beet juices obtained by novel low temperature extraction (at 30 °C) assisted by pulsed electric field (PEF) and conventional high temperature extraction (at 70 °C) was done by the method of lime-carbon dioxide treatment. The total concentration of lime used for the purification was varied from 6 to 15 kg of CaO/m3 of the juice. Filtration properties of the juices of first carbonation, as well as purity and coloration of the final thin juices, were compared. It was observed that purification of the juice extracted at 30 °C results in faster filtration of the juice of first carbonation and lower coloration of the final thin juice as compared to the juice obtained by means of purification of the juice extracted at 70 °C. It suggests that the quantity of CaO required for the efficient juice purification may be decreased from 15 kg/m3 (for the juice extracted at 70 °C without PEF treatment) to approx. 8 kg/m3 (for the juice obtained by PEF-assisted extraction at 30 °C).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficient utilization of sugar beet pulp, as well as raw, concentrated raw and thick sugar beet juice, for bioethanol production. Different fermentation conditions were examined. The influence of raw material pre‐treatment (pasteurization or sterilization), type of batch culture process (stationary or shaken) as well as the type of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast preparation on the yields of the process were studied. Moreover, the fermentation process effectiveness was examined in connection with the quality of the obtained distillates. Sterilization, stationary batch culture and Safdistil C‐70 yeast preparation were identified as the most profitable factors for sugar beet pulp fermentation, providing a high fermentation efficiency and ethanol yield (87.7% of theoretical ethanol yield). Concentrated raw beet juice resulted in a value of 94.2% of theoretical yield, and thick juice a 92.6% yield. The results suggest that bioethanol production from sugar beet pulp and sugar beet juice has promise as an alternative fuel. The raw spirits obtained from the sugar beet juice were characterized as having the lowest quantity of volatile by‐products. Copyright © 2014 The Institute of Brewing & Distilling  相似文献

The various estimates of different methods of sampling beet for sugar content and quality assessment parameters are determined. Alternative procedures to clarified juice purity measurements for quality assessment are the estimation of the major individual impurity components on either clarified juice or on the extract used for sugar content estimation.  相似文献

This research focused on the rice protein recovery from rice starch production wastewater by ultrafiltration. The effect of operating pressure was performed at different feed pressure from 2 to 10 bar. The suitable condition was chosen based on permeate flux; retention of protein, carbohydrate, reducing sugar, total dissolved solids (TDS); and purity of protein. The operating pressure of 6 and 8 bar was selected to conduct the study of batch operation mode with recycling of retentate. The permeate flux was highest at 6 bar, while the recovery yield and purity of protein reached a peak at 8 bar.Hermia's models were applied to analyze the fouling mechanisms in ultrafiltration (UF) of rice protein. Cake layer formation and intermediate blocking were found to occur during the UF depending on the operating pressure. The model developed in fouling analysis was used to estimate the change in component content in rice protein refinery. As result, the excellent agreement between the experimental and the model-simulated values for the solute concentrations in feed at various times of the UF operation was observed. Results indicate that UF is a potential technique for recovering rice protein.  相似文献

Sugar beet press water is one of the main wastewater in the sugar industry, which presently returned to the diffuser with no further treatment. Some form of treatment, such as pretreatment with membrane may however, improved the output efficiency of sugar plants. In this study, nanofiltration membrane (AFC80) were used to investigate the permeate flux, fouling percent and rejection percent of most important molassogenic ions (sodium and potassium) and sucrose. Sugar beet press water was provided by Abkoh sugar beet factory. The effect of operating parameters such as temperature (at levels of 25,40and 55 °C), trans membrane pressure (at levels of 10,15and 20 bar) on nanofiltration performance (permeate flux, fouling and rejection) were investigated. The results show that maximum permeate flux is obtained at 55 °C and 20 bar, while the average value is 49.27 kgm-2h-1. The minimum permeate flux is obtained at 25 °C and 10 bar, and the average value in this conditions is 14.63 kgm-2h-1. Maximum and minimum fouling are reached at 55 °C and 20 bar and 25 °C and 15 bar, respectively. Furthermore maximum rejection of sodium and potassium (84.3% and 72.5% respectively) is obtained at 25 °C and 20 bar, and minimum of rejection of sodium and potassium (74.3% and 69.05% respectively) is obtained on 55 °C and 10 bar. For all operating conditions, sucrose rejection was exceeded 95%. Variation in operating conditions had no significant effect on sucrose rejection.  相似文献

Clarification of fruit and vegetable juice is one of the integrated parts of modern industrial juice processing. This paper describes the clarification of tomato juice through microfiltration process. In this regard, the influence of transmembrane pressure (1, 2 and 3 bar), cross‐flow velocity which corresponds with Reynolds number (300, 1500 and 2500) and temperature (30, 40 and 50 °C) on permeate flux and some properties of clarified juice such as colour, turbidity, density, viscosity, pH and total soluble solid have been studied. The results revealed that the investigated parameters had an increasing effect on the permeate flux and colour and the greatest effect on the permeate flux and colour was supplied by cross‐flow velocity. The other permeate properties did not significantly change with variations of the operating parameters. Eventually, the statistical analysis indicated that the interactional effect of cross‐flow velocity and TMP on the permeate flux was significant.  相似文献

Pulsed ultrasound-assisted extraction with water was carried out to extract valuable compounds from purple sweet potato (PSP). Quality properties and dead-end filtration of PSP extract were investigated. Solutes concentration in PSP extract were 118.60?±?2.83, 599.8?±?8.28, and 0.72?±?0.03 μg mL?1 for total protein, total polyphenol, and total anthocyanin, respectively. Filtration with PES 50 kDa membrane-augmented polyphenol purity from 83.4 % in extract to 99.6 %. A protein removal coefficient of 99 % was achieved. Resistance in series model and Hermia’s model was applied to quantify filtration resistance and investigate fouling mechanism during filtration. Gel layer resistance was the most important for all three used membranes (PES 0.1 μm, PES 100 kDa, and PES 50 kDa). Fitting of experimental data by Hermia’s model revealed that the most suitable fouling mechanism varied, cake layer model for PES 0.1 μm and PES 100 kDa membrane and intermediate blocking model for PES 50 kDa membrane. For the purpose of more efficient polyphenol production, advanced filtration modules, such as cross-flow and rotating disk filtration module, are expected.  相似文献

In the current study, debittering of white mahlab (Prunus mahaleb L.) juice using polystyrene resins was investigated and optimized using the Box–Behnken response surface methodology. The effects of independent variables including resin type (cation exchange resin, anion exchange resin, and 50:50 cation/anion exchange resin), resin dosage (0.05, 0.075, and 0.1 g/mL) and agitation speed (50, 150, and 250 rpm) on total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, total anthocyanin content (TAC), antioxidant activity, and bitterness of white mahlab juice were studied. Effects of resin type and dosage were found to be significant (p < 0.05) for all responses. A dosage of 0.05 g/mL of the anion exchange resin and an agitation speed of 250 rpm were selected as the optimum conditions based on minimum bitterness (2.42) and maximum TAC (0.018 g/mol). We could conclude that the anionic resin can greatly reduce the intensity of bitterness and maintain the composition and characteristics of the P. mahaleb juice.  相似文献

This study describes experiments on pulsed electric field (PEF)-assisted water extraction of sugar from sugar beet using a pilot countercurrent extractor with 14 extraction sections. Cossettes were prepared from sugar beet by industrial knives and PEF treatment of the cossettes was done with electric field strength E varied between 100 and 600 V/cm. The total time of PEF treatment was tPEF = 50 ms. The effects of the main extraction parameters (temperature of extracting water and draft) on the extraction kinetics, as well as on the juice and cossette (pulp) characteristics, were investigated. The temperature of extraction from PEF-treated cossettes was varied from 30 to 70 °C; the draft was varied from 120 to 90%. The principal possibility of cold (at 30 °C) and moderate thermal (50-60 °C) extraction of sucrose from sugar beet cossettes treated by PEF was confirmed on the pilot countercurrent extractor. The purity of the juice obtained by cold and moderate thermal extraction was not lower than the purity of juice obtained by conventional hot water diffusion at 70 °C. The sugar beet pulp can be well exhausted by cold or mild thermal extraction of cossettes treated by PEF. Decrease of draft to 100-90% permitted increasing of the extracted juice concentration, but the cossettes were worse exhausted. The pulp obtained by cold extraction of PEF-treated cossettes had dryness >30%, which was noticeably higher than dryness of the pulp obtained by conventional hot water extraction technique.  相似文献
