Model for the interpretation of hyperspectral remote-sensing reflectance   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Remote-sensing reflectance is easier to interpret for the open ocean than for coastal regions because the optical signals are highly coupled to the phytoplankton (e.g., chlorophyll) concentrations. For estuarine or coastal waters, variable terrigenous colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), suspended sediments, and bottom reflectance, all factors that do not covary with the pigment concentration, confound data interpretation. In this research, remote-sensing reflectance models are suggested for coastal waters, to which contributions that are due to bottom reflectance, CDOM fluorescence, and water Raman scattering are included. Through the use of two parameters to model the combination of the backscattering coefficient and the Q factor, excellent agreement was achieved between the measured and modeled remote-sensing reflectance for waters from the West Florida Shelf to the Mississippi River plume. These waters cover a range of chlorophyll of 0.2-40 mg/m(3) and gelbstoff absorption at 440 nm from 0.02-0.4 m(-1). Data with a spectral resolution of 10 nm or better, which is consistent with that provided by the airborne visible and infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) and spacecraft spectrometers, were used in the model evaluation.  相似文献

During the passage of a cold front in March 2002, bio-optical properties examined in coastal waters impacted by the Mississippi River indicated that westward advective flows and increasing river discharge containing high concentrations of nonalgal particles contributed significantly to surface optical variability. A comparison of seasonal data from three cruises indicated spectral models of absorption and scattering to be generally consistent with other coastal environments, while their parameterization in terms of chlorophyll (Chl) alpha concentration showed seasonal variability. The exponential slope of the colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) averaged 0.0161+/-0.00054 nm(-1) and nonalgal absorption averaged 0.011 nm(-1) with deviations from general trends observed due to anomalous water properties. Although the phytoplankton specific absorption coefficients varied over a wide range [0.02 to 0.1 m2 (mg Chl)(-1) at 443 nm] being higher in offshore surface waters, values of phytoplankton absorption spectra at the Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) wave bands were highly correlated to modeled values. Particulate scattering characteristics were similar to observations for other coastal waters, while backscattering ratios were on average lower in phytoplankton-dominated surface waters (0.011+/-0.003) and higher in low Chl near-bottom waters (0.0191+/-0.0045). Average percent differences in remote sensing reflectance Rrs derived from modeled and in-water radiometric measurements were highest in the blue wave bands (52%) and at locations with more stratified water columns. SeaWiFS estimates of Chl and CDOM absorption derived using regional empirical algorithms were highly correlated to in situ data.  相似文献

The absorption and transport scattering coefficients of biological tissues determine the radial dependence of the diffuse reflectance that is due to a point source. A system is described for making remote measurements of spatially resolved absolute diffuse reflectance and hence noninvasive, noncontact estimates of the tissue optical properties. The system incorporated a laser source and a CCD camera. Deflection of the incident beam into the camera allowed characterization of the source for absolute reflectance measurements. It is shown that an often used solution of the diffusion equation cannot be applied for these measurements. Instead, a neural network, trained on the results of Monte Carlo simulations, was used to estimate the absorption and scattering coefficients from the reflectance data. Tests on tissue-simulating phantoms with transport scattering coefficients between 0.5 and 2.0 mm(-1) and absorption coefficients between 0.002 and 0.1 mm(-1) showed the rms errors of this technique to be 2.6% for the transport scattering coefficient and 14% for the absorption coefficients. The optical properties of bovine muscle, adipose, and liver tissue, as well as chicken muscle (breast), were also measured ex vivo at 633 and 751 nm. For muscle tissue it was found that the Monte Carlo simulation did not agree with experimental measurements of reflectance at distances less than 2 mm from the incident beam.  相似文献

A system that incorporated a laser source and a CCD camera was used to measure spatially-resolved steady-state diffuse reflectance. Monte Carlo simulations and experiments in tissue phantoms were used to train a neural network that characterizes the reflectance data on a turbid medium. The neural network was used to extract the optical properties (scattering and absorption coefficients) of biological tissue. The accuracy of the neural network was investigated and validated. Tests on tissue-simulation phantoms showed the relative errors of this technique to be 3% for the reduced scattering coefficient and 9% for the absorption coefficients. The optical properties of human skin were also measured in vivo at 633 nm. For human skin tissue it was found that our results were in good agreement with their reference values.  相似文献

A flexible and fast Monte Carlo-based model of diffuse reflectance has been developed for the extraction of the absorption and scattering properties of turbid media, such as human tissues. This method is valid for a wide range of optical properties and is easily adaptable to existing probe geometries, provided a single phantom calibration measurement is made. A condensed Monte Carlo method was used to speed up the forward simulations. This model was validated by use of two sets of liquid-tissue phantoms containing Nigrosin or hemoglobin as absorbers and polystyrene spheres as scatterers. The phantoms had a wide range of absorption (0-20 cm(-1)) and reduced scattering coefficients (7-33 cm(-1)). Mie theory and a spectrophotometer were used to determine the absorption and reduced scattering coefficients of the phantoms. The diffuse reflectance spectra of the phantoms were measured over a wavelength range of 350-850 nm. It was found that optical properties could be extracted from the experimentally measured diffuse reflectance spectra with an average error of 3% or less for phantoms containing hemoglobin and 12% or less for phantoms containing Nigrosin.  相似文献

Optical measurement of fruit quality is challenging due to the presence of a skin around the fruit flesh and the multiple scattering by the structured tissues. To gain insight in the light-tissue interaction, the optical properties of apple skin and flesh tissue are estimated in the 350-2200 nm range for three cultivars. For this purpose, single integrating sphere measurements are combined with inverse adding-doubling. The observed absorption coefficient spectra are dominated by water in the near infrared and by pigments and chlorophyll in the visible region, whose concentrations are much higher in skin tissue. The scattering coefficient spectra show the monotonic decrease with increasing wavelength typical for biological tissues with skin tissue being approximately three times more scattering than flesh tissue. Comparison to the values from time-resolved spectroscopy reported in literature showed comparable profiles for the optical properties, but overestimation of the absorption coefficient values, due to light losses.  相似文献

The optical properties of mineral particles suspended in seawater were calculated from the Mie scattering theory for different size distributions and complex refractive indices of the particles. The ratio of the spectral backscattering coefficient to the sum of the spectral absorption and backscattering coefficients of seawater, b(b)(lambda)/[a(lambda) + b(b)(lambda)], was analyzed as a proxy for ocean reflectance for varying properties and concentrations of mineral particles. Given the plausible range of variability in the particle size distribution and the refractive index, the general parameterizations of the absorption and scattering properties of mineral particles and their effects on ocean reflectance in terms of particle mass concentration alone are inadequate. The variations in the particle size distribution and the refractive index must be taken into account. The errors in chlorophyll estimation obtained from the remote sensing algorithms that are due to the presence of mineral particles can be very large. For example, when the mineral concentration is 1 g m(-3) and the chlorophyll a concentration is low (0.05 mg m(-3)), current global algorithms based on a blue-to-green reflectance ratio can produce a chlorophyll overestimation ranging from approximately 50% to as much as 20-fold.  相似文献

A hyperspectral imaging system in line scanning mode was used for measuring the absorption and scattering properties of turbid food materials over the visible and near-infrared region of 530-900 nm. An instrumental calibration procedure was developed to compensate for the nonuniform instrument response of the imaging system. A nonlinear curve-fitting algorithm for a steady-state diffusion theory model was proposed to determine absorption (mua) and reduced scattering coefficients (mu's) from the spatially resolved hyperspectral reflectance profiles. The hyperspectral imaging system provided good measurement of mua and mu's for the simulation samples made of Intralipid scattering material and three absorbers (blue dye, green dye, and black ink) with average fitting errors of 16% and 11%, respectively. The optical properties of the fruit and vegetable juices and milks were determined. Values of the absorption and reduced scattering coefficient at 600 nm were highly correlated to the fat content of the milk samples with the correlation coefficient of 0.995 and 0.998, respectively. Compared to time-resolved and frequency-domain techniques, the hyperspectral imaging technique provides a faster and simpler means for measuring the optical properties of turbid food and agricultural products.  相似文献

We present a method and technique of using hyperspectral diffuse reflectance for rapid determination of the optical properties of turbid media. A hyperspectral imaging system in line scanning mode was used to acquire spatial diffuse reflectance profiles from liquid phantoms made up of absorbing dyes and fat emulsion scatterers over the spectral range of 450-1000 nm instantaneously. The hyperspectral reflectance data were analyzed by using a steady-state diffusion approximation model for semi-infinite homogeneous media. A calibration procedure was developed to compensate the nonuniform instrument response of the imaging system, and a curve-fitting algorithm was used to extract absorption and reduced scattering coefficients (mua and mus', respectively) for the phantoms in the wavelength range from 530 to 900 nm. The hyperspectral imaging system gave good measures of mua and mus' for the phantoms with average fitting errors of 12% and 7%, respectively. The hyperspectral imaging technique is fast, noncontact, and easy to use, which makes it especially suitable for measurement of the optical properties of turbid liquid and solid foods.  相似文献

We present a compact, fast, and versatile fiber-optic probe system for real-time determination of tissue optical properties from spatially resolved continuous-wave diffuse reflectance measurements. The system collects one set of reflectance data from six source-detector distances at four arbitrary wavelengths with a maximum overall sampling rate of 100 Hz. Multivariate calibration techniques based on two-dimensional polynomial fitting are employed to extract and display the absorption and reduced scattering coefficients in real-time mode. The four wavelengths of the current configuration are 660, 785, 805, and 974 nm, respectively. Cross-validation tests on a 6 x 7 calibration matrix of Intralipid-dye phantoms showed that the mean prediction error at, e.g., 785 nm was 2.8% for the absorption coefficient and 1.3% for the reduced scattering coefficient. The errors are relative to the range of the optical properties of the phantoms at 785 nm, which were 0-0.3/cm for the absorption coefficient and 6-16/cm for the reduced scattering coefficient. Finally, we also present and discuss results from preliminary skin tissue measurements.  相似文献

Retrieving the inherent optical properties of water from remote sensing multispectral reflectance measurements is difficult due to both the complex nature of the forward modeling and the inherent nonlinearity of the inverse problem. In such cases, neural network (NN) techniques have a long history in inverting complex nonlinear systems. The process we adopt utilizes two NNs in parallel. The first NN is used to relate the remote sensing reflectance at available MODIS-visible wavelengths (except the 678 nm fluorescence channel) to the absorption and backscatter coefficients at 442 nm (peak of chlorophyll absorption). The second NN separates algal and nonalgal absorption components, outputting the ratio of algal-to-nonalgal absorption. The resulting synthetically trained algorithm is tested using both the NASA Bio-Optical Marine Algorithm Data Set (NOMAD), as well as our own field datasets from the Chesapeake Bay and Long Island Sound, New York. Very good agreement is obtained, with R2 values of 93.75%, 90.67%, and 86.43% for the total, algal, and nonalgal absorption, respectively, for the NOMAD. For our field data, which cover absorbing waters up to about 6 m?1, R2 is 91.87% for the total measured absorption.  相似文献

We report measurement of optical transport parameters of normal and malignant (ductal carcinoma) human breast tissue. A spatially resolved steady-state diffuse reflectance technique was used for measurement of the reduced scattering coefficient (mu(s)?) and the absorption coefficient (mu(a)) of the tissue. The anisotropy parameter of scattering (g) was estimated by goniophotometric measurements of the scattering phase function. The values of mu(s)? and mu(a) for malignant breast tissue were observed to be larger than those for normal breast tissue over the wavelength region investigated (450-650 nm). Further, by using both the diffuse reflectance and the goniophotometric measurements, we estimated the Mie equivalent average radius of tissue scatterers to be larger in malignant tissue than in normal tissue.  相似文献

We simultaneously measured the diffuse reflectance spectra and transmittance spectra of in vitro rat cerebral cortical tissue slices perfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) in the wavelength range from 500 to 900 nm. An ischemia-like condition in the cortical tissue was induced by oxygen/glucose deprivation (OGD) of the aCSF. Diffuse reflectance and transmittance of the cortical slices were decreased and increased, respectively, during OGD. Spectral data of reduced scattering coefficients and absorption coefficients were estimated by the inverse Monte Carlo simulation for light transport in tissue. As with OGD, significant decrease of the reduced scattering coefficients and alteration of the absorption coefficient spectrum were observed over the measured wavelength range. The mean maximum amplitudes of change in the absorption coefficient at 520, 550, 605, and 830 nm were 0.33 ± 0.14, 0.30 ± 0.12, 0.30 ± 0.14, and -0.04 ± 0.16, respectively, whereas those in the reduced scattering coefficient at 520, 550, 605, and 830 nm were -0.37 ± 0.08, -0.38 ± 0.08, -0.38 ± 0.08, and -0.39 ± 0.08. Variations in the reduced scattering coefficients implied cell deformation mainly due to cell swelling, whereas those in the absorption spectra indicated reductions in heme aa(3) and CuA in cytochrome c oxidase and cytochrome c.  相似文献

A model for the calculation of diffuse reflectance and transmittance of a single interference layer on a transparent substrate is applied to pyrolytically deposited tin oxide films on glass. Total as well as diffuse reflectance and transmittance spectra were measured in an integrating sphere, and scattering levels between 0.002 and 0.1 were recorded. The optical constants and the thickness of the films were determined from the total reflectance and transmittance spectra. The wavelength-dependent effective root-mean-square roughness of aluminum-coated tin oxide front surfaces was determined by the application of the scalar scattering theory. Surface roughness values between 5 and 25 nm were obtained. The obtained effective rms roughness values of the air-film interface were used together with the other film parameters to calculate the diffuse reflectance and transmittance spectra of the tin oxide-coated glass substrates. A comparison between calculated and experimental spectra showed good agreement for diffuse reflectance, diffuse transmittance, and total integrated scattering spectra.  相似文献

Methods for local photon path length and optical properties estimation, based on measured and simulated diffuse reflectance within 2 mm from the light source, are proposed and evaluated in vivo on Caucasian human skin. The accuracy of the methods was good (2%-7%) for path length and reduced scattering but poor for absorption estimation. Reduced scattering and absorption were systematically lower in the fingertip than in the forearm skin (633 nm). A maximum intrasite and interindividual variation of approximately 35% in an average photon path length was found. The methodology was applied in laser Doppler flowmetry, where path-length normalization of the estimated perfusion removed the optical property dependency.  相似文献

We measured the absorption spectrum (340-640 nm) of the purest available water with photothermal deflection spectroscopy. Our spectrum exhibits an absorption minimum in the blue region of the spectrum that is deeper than in most previously documented pure-water absorption studies. We attribute this to exceptional sample purity and our technique's inherent freedom from scattering effects. Because the absorption minimum is significantly lower, our spectrum displays high-order molecular resonance structure not observed in any previous absorption studies to our knowledge. We find the minimum in the absorption spectrum of pure water is 0.0062 ? 0.0006 m(-1) at 420 nm and 25 degrees C.  相似文献

We performed the simultaneous measurement of intrinsic optical signals (IOSs) related to metabolic activity and cellular and subcellular morphological characteristics, i.e., light scattering for a rat global ischemic brain model made by rapidly removing blood by saline infusion. The signals were measured on the basis of multiwavelength diffuse reflectances in which 605 and 830 nm were used to detect the IOSs that are thought to be dominantly affected by redox changes of heme aa(3) and CuA in cytochrome c oxidase (CcO), respectively. For measuring the scattering signal, the wavelength that was found to be most insensitive to the absorption changes, e.g., approximately 620 nm, was used. The measurements suggested that an increase in the absorption due to reduction of heme aa(3) occurred soon after blood clearance, and this was followed by a large triphasic change in light scattering, during which time a decrease in the absorption due to reduction of CuA occurred. Through the triphasic scattering change, scattering signals increased by 5.2 +/- 1.5% (n = 5), and the increase in light scattering showed significant correlation with both the reflectance intensity changes at 605 and 830 nm. This suggests that morphological changes in cells correlate with reductions of heme aa(3) and CuA. Histological analysis of tissue after the triphasic scattering change showed no alteration in either the nuclei or the cytoskeleton, but electron microscopic observation revealed deformed, enlarged mitochondria and expanded dendrites. These findings suggest that the simultaneous measurement of absorption signals related to the redox changes in the CcO and the scattering signal is useful for monitoring tissue viability in the brain.  相似文献

Local and superficial near-infrared (NIR) optical-property characterization of turbid biological tissues can be achieved by measurement of spatially resolved diffuse reflectance at small source-detector separations (<1.4 mm). However, in these conditions the inverse problem, i.e., calculation of localized absorption and the reduced scattering coefficients, is necessarily sensitive to the scattering phase function. This effect can be minimized if a new parameter of the phase function gamma, which depends on the first and the second moments of the phase function, is known. If gamma is unknown, an estimation of this parameter can be obtained by the measurement, but the uncertainty of the absorption coefficient is increased. A spatially resolved reflectance probe employing multiple detector fibers (0.3-1.4 mm from the source) is described. Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine gamma, the reduced scattering and absorption coefficients from reflectance data. Probe performance is assessed by measurements on phantoms, the optical properties of which were measured by other techniques [frequency domain photon migration (FDPM) and spatially resolved transmittance]. Our results show that changes in the absorption coefficient, the reduced scattering coefficient, and gamma can be measured to within +/-0.005 mm(-1), +/-0.05 mm(-1), and +/-0.2, respectively. In vivo measurements performed intraoperatively on a human skull and brain are reported for four NIR wavelengths (674, 811, 849, 956 nm) when the spatially resolved probe and FDPM are used. The spatially resolved probe shows optimum measurement sensitivity in the measurement volume immediately beneath the probe (typically 1 mm(3) in tissues), whereas FDPM typically samples larger regions of tissues. Optical-property values for human skull, white matter, scar tissue, optic nerve, and tumors are reported that show distinct absorption and scattering differences between structures and a dependence on the phase-function parameter gamma.  相似文献

The Monte Carlo-based inverse model of diffuse reflectance described in part I of this pair of companion papers was applied to the diffuse reflectance spectra of a set of 17 malignant and 24 normal-benign ex vivo human breast tissue samples. This model allows extraction of physically meaningful tissue parameters, which include the concentration of absorbers and the size and density of scatterers present in tissue. It was assumed that intrinsic absorption could be attributed to oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin and beta-carotene, that scattering could be modeled by spheres of a uniform size distribution, and that the refractive indices of the spheres and the surrounding medium are known. The tissue diffuse reflectance spectra were evaluated over a wavelength range of 400-600 nm. The extracted parameters that showed the statistically most significant differences between malignant and nonmalignant breast tissues were hemoglobin saturation and the mean reduced scattering coefficient. Malignant tissues showed decreased hemoglobin saturation and an increased mean reduced scattering coefficient compared with nonmalignant tissues. A support vector machine classification algorithm was then used to classify a sample as malignant or nonmalignant based on these two extracted parameters and produced a cross-validated sensitivity and specificity of 82% and 92%, respectively.  相似文献

Two-band algorithms that use the ratio of reflectances at 672 and 704 nm have already proved successful for chlorophyll a retrieval in a range of coastal and inland waters. An analysis of the effect of reflectance measurement errors on such algorithms is made. It provides important indications of the range of validity of these algorithms and motivates the development of an entirely new type of adaptive two-band algorithm for hyperspectral data, whereby the higher wavelength is chosen for each input spectrum individually. When one selects the wavelength at which reflectance is equal to the reflectance at the red chlorophyll a absorption peak, chlorophyll a retrieval becomes entirely insensitive to spectrally flat reflectance errors, which are typical of imperfect atmospheric correction, and is totally uncoupled from the retrieval or an estimation of backscatter. This new algorithm has been tested for Dutch inland and Belgian coastal waters.  相似文献
