Fibre-Metal Laminates (FML) such as GLARE are of interest as bonded crack retarders (BCR) to improve the fatigue performance of aircraft structures. The degradation of the performance of the crack retarder in service if subjected to damage is a critical factor in designing with this concept. Bonded assemblies of an aluminium alloy substrate reinforced with a GLARE strap were prepared, and were subjected to low velocity impact damage onto the GLARE, with impact energies ranging from 10 to 60 J. The thermal residual stresses developed during the bonding process of the GLARE to the aluminium were determined using neutron diffraction, and the change in the thermal residual stresses owing to impact damage onto the GLARE was evaluated. Pre- and post-impact fatigue performance of the BCR assemblies has been investigated. The results show that the BCR provides an improvement in fatigue life, but the reduction is impaired following impact damage. The results show that monitoring of impact damage will be critical in the damage tolerance assurance for aerospace structures containing bonded crack retarders.  相似文献

This paper presents an investigation on the effectiveness of crack growth retarders bonded to integral metallic structures. The study was performed by both numerical modelling and experimental tests. It focuses on aluminium alloy panels reinforced by bonded straps made of carbon-epoxy, glass-epoxy composite materials or a titanium alloy. The goal was to develop a fail-safe design for integrally stiffened skin-stringer panels applicable to aircraft wing structures. The modelling strategy and finite element models are presented and discussed. The requirements that the models should meet are also discussed. The study has focused on establishing the extent of crack retarder benefits, in terms of fatigue crack growth life improvement, by numerical simulation and experimental tests of various crack retarders. The results of predicted fatigue crack growth retardation have been validated by tests of laboratory samples. This study concludes that by bonding discrete straps to an integral structure, the fatigue crack growth life can be significantly improved.  相似文献

In this paper, the small fatigue crack behavior of titanium alloy TC4 at different stress ratios was investigated. Single‐edge‐notch tension specimens were fatigued axially under a nominal maximum stress of 370 MPa at room temperature. Results indicate that fatigue cracks in TC4 initiate from the interface between α and β phases or within α phase. More than 90% of the total fatigue life is consumed in the small crack initiation and growth stages. The crack growth process of TC4 can be divided into three typical stages, ie, microstructurally small crack stage, physically small crack stage, and long crack stage. Although the stress ratio has a significant effect on the total fatigue life and crack initiation life at constant σmax, its effect on crack growth rate is indistinguishable at R = ?0.1, 0.1, and 0.3 when crack growth rate is plotted as a function of ?K.  相似文献

Rubber components subjected to fluctuating loads often fail due to nucleation and the growth of defects or cracks. The prevention of such failures depends upon an understanding of the mechanics underlying the failure process. This investigation explores the nucleation and growth of cracks in filled natural rubber. Both fatigue macro‐crack nucleation as well as fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted using simple tension and planar tension specimens, respectively. Crack nucleation as well as crack growth life prediction analysis approaches were used to correlate the experimental data. Several aspects of the fatigue process, such as failure mode and the effects of R ratio (minimum strain) on fatigue life, are also discussed. It is shown that a small positive R ratio can have a significant beneficial effect on fatigue life and crack growth rate, particularly at low strain range.  相似文献

In this paper, a modification of the UniGrow model is proposed to predict total fatigue life with the presence of a short fatigue crack by incorporating short crack propagation into the UniGrow crack growth model. The UniGrow model is modified by 2 different methods, namely the “short crack stress intensity correction method” and the “short crack data‐fitting method” to estimate the total fatigue life including both short and long fatigue crack propagations. Predicted fatigue lives obtained from these 2 methods were compared with experimental data sets of 2024‐T3, 7075‐T56 aluminium alloys, and Ti‐6Al‐4V titanium alloy. Two proposed methods have shown good fatigue life predictions at relatively high maximum stresses; however, they provide conservative fatigue life predictions at lower stresses corresponding high cycle fatigue lives where short crack behaviour dominates total fatigue life at lower stress levels.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth (FCG) is usually studied assuming that ΔK is the driving parameter. An effective ΔK is considered in the presence of crack closure. However, after crack opening, there is an elastic regime that does not contribute to FCG. The objective here is to quantify this elastic range of ΔK, ΔKel, for different loading conditions and material properties. The yield stress was found to be the most important material parameter, followed by the hardening exponent. A linear decrease of ΔKel with ΔK was found for the 7050‐T6, 6082‐T6, and 6016‐T4 aluminium alloys, while the 304L stainless steel presented a slight increase. On the other hand, the increase of Kmax was found to increase the elastic fatigue range. Relatively high values of elastic range were obtained for the plane strain state, compared with the plane stress state.  相似文献

A second‐order state‐space model of fatigue crack growth in ductile alloys was presented by Patankar et al., 1 - 4 where the crack length and the crack opening stress were treated as two state variables. Simulation results showed that this model gave good predictions when compared with experimental data for aluminium alloy 7075‐T6 and 2024‐T3 at constant‐amplitude load as well as with overloads. These model predictions were, however, poor for cases with over/under load or under/over load sequences where load excursion effects were underestimated. A third‐order state‐space model is presented is this paper that is believed to be more accurate for predictions of fatigue crack growth for ductile alloys under various loadings. The constraint factor calculated from an algebraic equation in the second‐order state‐space model is treated as the third state variable in this model. Through simulations, it is shown that the third‐order state‐space model gives better predictions than the second‐order state‐space model and FASTRAN II, especially when the effects of over/under load and under/over load are necessary considerations.  相似文献

The plastic range of crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) has been used for the experimental characterisation of fatigue crack growth for 2024‐T3 and 7050‐T6 aluminium alloys using digital image correlation (DIC). Analysis of a complete loading cycle allowed resolving the CTOD into elastic and plastic components. Fatigue tests were conducted on compact tension specimens with a thickness of 1 mm and a width of 20 mm at stress ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5. The range of plastic CTOD could be related linearly to da/dN independent of stress ratio for both alloys. To facilitate accurate measurements of CTOD, a method was developed for correctly locating the crack tip and a sensitivity analysis was performed to explore the effect of measurement position behind the crack tip on the CTOD. The plastic range of CTOD was demonstrated to be a suitable alternate parameter to the stress intensity factor range for characterising fatigue crack propagation. A particularly innovative aspect of the work is that the paper describes a DIC‐based technique that the authors believe gives a reliable way to determine the appropriate position to measure CTOD.  相似文献

Selective laser melting (SLM) is an emerging additive manufacturing technology, capable of producing complex geometry components. The current work studied both the effect of substrate material and mean stress on the fatigue crack growth behaviour along interfaces of bi‐material specimens, substrate, and part by SLM. Fatigue tests were carried out in agreement with ASTM E647 standard, using 6‐mm‐thick compact specimens. The substrate steel has only a negligible effect both on the fatigue crack propagation rate and on the crack path. The failure occurs in the material additively manufactured by SLM, near the interface. The mean stress produced only a reduced influence on the fatigue crack propagation rate in the Paris regime. For larger values of ΔK, where Kmax approaches KIc, a significant influence of the mean stress was observed. In spite of nondetection of crack closure, the application of overloads promoted significant fatigue crack retardation, quite similar for both substrate materials, probably due to the crack bifurcation during the overload.  相似文献

Evolution of the thermodynamic entropy generation during fatigue crack initiation life of notched specimens is studied. A set of experimental results of AA7075‐T651 is examined to determine applicability of the thermodynamic entropy generation as an index of fatigue crack initiation. Entropy accumulation is calculated from hysteresis energy and temperature rise. An increasing trend of entropy accumulation with the number of cycle to failure is observed on macroscale measurements. Results also determine that the entropy generations from the samples under the same operating conditions are similar as the crack grows. Scanning electron microscope analysis is performed on the fractured surfaces to observe the fatigue striations, and persistent slip bands are observed employing an optical microscope. A discussion is presented regarding the length scales on which crack initiation occurs and entropy calculation is made.  相似文献

Fretting fatigue fracture of industrial machines is sometimes experienced after a long period of operation. It has been a question whether the fatigue limit which means infinite life really exists in fretting fatigue or not. Fretting fatigue tests in ultra high cycle region up to 109 cycles were performed. Test results showed that the SN curve had a knee point around 2 × 107 cycles and a clear fatigue limit was observed in the giga‐cycle regime for partial slip conditions. An electropotential drop technique was applied to detect the crack growth behaviour under the contact pad. The real‐time measurement of crack depth during the fretting fatigue test at the fatigue limit showed that a crack initiated at an early stage and then ceased to grow after 2 × 107 cycles and the crack became a non‐propagating crack. These results indicated that the fatigue limit exists in fretting fatigue and infinite endurance is achieved by the mechanism of forming a non‐propagating crack.  相似文献

Crack closure delays the intrinsic mechanisms responsible for crack growth, therefore, it must be considered in fatigue crack growth modelling. The objective of this work is to develop a numerical procedure to predict crack closure induced by plasticity. First the crack closure was experimentally measured on M(T) 6082‐T6 aluminium alloy specimens of 3 mm thickness. A pin microgauge was used with the compliance technique. Then different parameters of the numerical procedure were analysed, namely the finite element mesh and the crack propagation scheme. The size of crack‐tip elements has an important influence and it is recommended to be of the same order of cyclic plastic zone. Crack‐opening levels only 10% lower than experimental results were obtained considering kinematic hardening and two load cycles in each increment.  相似文献

Fatigue crack initiation constitutes that part of total life, which includes the nucleation life, Nn, of an initial crack-like-discontinuity (CLD) and the growth life, Ns, of the CLD to an observable size called an initiated crack. This sequence dominates the total fatigue life of defect-free alpha-beta titanlum alloys. The mechanisms of CLD formation and its growth to the initiated crack at room temperature are reviewed in light of controlling microstructure and other metallurgical features. Recommendations are made for improving fatigue crack initiation resistance with consideration to practical limitations.  相似文献

Numerical studies played a major role in the current understanding of plasticity induced crack closure (PICC), however it is well known that the numerical models simplify the reality by considering discrete crack propagations, relatively high fatigue crack growth rates, sharp cracks and that propagation occurs at a well‐defined load. The objective of this paper is to find if despite these limitations, the numerical predictions of PICC are close to the experimental results. Experimental work was developed to obtain crack opening values in 1‐mm‐thick middle‐tension (M(T)) specimens of AA6016‐T4 aluminium alloy. The opening level was determined from remote compliance data captured by a pin microgauge placed at the centre of the specimen. A numerical model was developed and optimized replicating the experimental test in terms of sample geometry, loading parameters, material behaviour and crack opening measurement technique. The adoption, in the numerical analysis, of a remote measurement technique for determining PICC was found to be robust and adequate for mesh refinement studies. A good agreement was found between experimental and numerical results.  相似文献

Retardation in fatigue crack growth rate following the application of single and periodic tensile overloads was studied for 2024‐T3 and 7075‐T6 aluminium alloys. Tests were performed at constant stress and at constant stress intensity factor ranges, at a load ratio of R= 0.1, at a baseline ΔK in the 10–20 MPa√m range which corresponds to the Paris regime. Overload ratios of 1.3–1.65 were studied with overload spacing, n, varying from 20 to 10 000 cycles. 2024‐T3 displayed an order of magnitude higher retardation, Nd, due to single tensile overloads compared to 7075‐T6. Periodic overloads induced maximum retardation when n/Nd≈ 0.5 for both alloys, the magnitude being only 15% higher for 2024‐T3.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth behaviours in different welding zones of laser beam welded specimens were investigated using central crack tension specimens for 6156 aluminium alloy under constant amplitude loading at nominal applied stress ratio R = 0.5, 0.06, ?1. The experimental results showed that base metal (BM) exhibited superior fatigue crack resistance compared to weld metal (WM) and heat‐affected zone (HAZ). Crack growth resistance of WM was the lowest. The exponent m values for BM and HAZ at different stress ratios are close and around 2.6, while m for WM at different stress ratio is around 4.7. The discrepancy between crack growth rates for WM and BM is more evident with increasing stress ratio, while it is a little change for HAZ and BM. Change of the microstructure in WM deteriorates the resistance of fatigue crack growth compared to BM. It was mainly due to grain boundary liquation and dissolving of second‐phase particles in the weld region. It was also found that the variety of fatigue crack resistance for different welding zones is in conformity with the change of hardness. BM with the highest hardness exhibited the maximum resistance for fatigue crack, and WM with the lowest hardness exhibited the minimum fatigue crack resistance.  相似文献

This paper proposes a local stress concept to evaluate the fretting fatigue limit for contact edge cracks. A unique S–N curve based on the local stress could be obtained for a contact edge crack irrespective of mechanical factors such as contact pressure, relative slip, contact length, specimen size and loading type. The analytical background for the local stress concept was studied using FEM analysis. It was shown that the local stress uniquely determined the ΔK change due to crack growth as well as the stress distribution near the contact edge. The condition that determined the fretting fatigue limit was predicted by combining the ΔK change due to crack growth and the ΔKth for a short crack. The formation of a non‐propagating crack at the fatigue limit was predicted by the model and it was experimentally confirmed by a long‐life fretting fatigue test.  相似文献

The life prediction analysis based on an exponential crack‐velocity formulation was made and examined using a variety of experimental data on glass and advanced structural ceramics in constant stress‐rate (‘dynamic fatigue’) loading at ambient and elevated temperatures. The data fit to the relation of strength versus ln (stress rate) was very reasonable for most of the materials. The major limitation in the exponential crack‐velocity formulation, however, was that the inert strength of a material must be known a priori to evaluate the important SCG parameter, n, a significant drawback as compared with the conventional power‐law crack‐velocity formulation.  相似文献

The present study aims to investigate the extent to which the fatigue behaviour of laser beam‐welded AA6056‐T6 butt joints with an already existing crack can be improved through the application of laser shock peening. Ultrasonic testing was utilized for in situ (nondestructive) measurement of fatigue crack growth during the fatigue test. This procedure allowed the preparation of welded specimens with surface fatigue cracks with a depth of approximately 1.2 mm. The precracked specimens showed a 20% reduction in the fatigue limit compared with specimens without cracks in the as‐welded condition. Through the application of laser shock peening on the surfaces of the precracked specimens, it was possible to recover the fatigue life to the level of the specimens tested in the as‐welded condition. The results of this study show that laser shock peening is a very promising technique to recover the fatigue life of welded joints with surface cracks, which can be detected by nondestructive testing.  相似文献

This work presents experimental results on effects of severe plastic deformation (SPD) and subsequent natural ageing on tensile mechanical properties and fatigue crack growth resistance of fine‐grained 7075 Al alloy. The alloy was subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) after solution treatment. Fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted in room condition, at load ratio R = 0.1 and different load ranges on small disk shaped compact tension specimens. Fatigue fracture surface is also investigated using scanning electron microscopy observations and showed more ductile fatigue crack growth in the unECAPed specimen. Despite the increased tensile strength after ECAP, the ductility that controls low‐cycle fatigue behaviour has decreased. It is found that ECAP has resulted in a remarkable change in Paris regime parameters and a significant increase in fatigue crack growth rate. The decrease in fatigue crack growth resistance and ΔKc after ECAP can be attributed to the decrease in alloy's ductility.  相似文献
