Abstract: The effects of shot‐peening on fretting fatigue crack growth behaviour in titanium alloy, Ti‐6A1‐4V were investigated. Three shot‐peening intensities: 4A, 7A and 10A were considered. The analysis involved the fracture mechanics and finite element sub‐modelling technique to estimate crack propagation lives. These computations were supplemented with the experimentally measured total fretting fatigue lives of laboratory specimens to assess the crack initiation lives. Shot‐peening has significant effect on the initiation/propagation phases of fretting fatigue cracks; however this effect depends upon the shot‐peening intensity. The ratio of crack initiation and total life increased while the ratio of the crack propagation and total life decreased with an increase of shot‐peening intensity. Effects of residual compressive stress from shot‐peening on the crack growth behaviour were also investigated. The fretting fatigue crack propagation component of the total life with relaxation increased in comparison to its counterpart without relaxation in each shot‐peened intensity case while the initiation component decreased. Improvement in the fretting fatigue life from the shot‐peening and also with an increase in the shot‐peening intensity appears to be not always due to increase in the crack initiation resistance from shot‐peened induced residual compressive stress.  相似文献

采用修正的J积分计算方法,考虑残余应力、残余应变和残余应变能,定量计算和分析喷丸强化对半椭圆表面裂纹前沿J积分参数的影响规律。对喷丸强化工艺进行有限元建模仿真,通过改变约束条件生成疲劳裂纹并施加远场载荷,计算J积分和裂纹扩展速率。考虑不同深度的半椭圆表面裂纹和不同丸粒速率对断裂参量的影响。结果表明:丸粒速率一定时,与未喷丸相比喷丸后J积分值的降幅随裂纹深度的增加而减小,喷丸强化有益于抑制疲劳浅裂纹的扩展。当裂纹深度为0.3mm时,裂纹最深点的J积分值由4.25N/mm降低到2.99N/mm,降幅约30.1%。裂纹深度一定时,J积分值随丸粒速率的增大而降低,提高丸粒速率对抑制裂纹扩展更有益。  相似文献

The effects of partial surface shot peening on the fatigue crack growth behaviour of a ferritic steel have been experimentally investigated in this paper. Dog‐bone specimens fabricated from Optim700QL were tested under tension‐tension fatigue loads. Three distinct extents of partial shot peening, with respect to the crack tip and specimen symmetry line, were tested. The fatigue crack growth results from these experiments have been compared with those obtained from the same specimen geometry but with no peening. The results show that the residual stress fields formed ahead of the initial notch tip due to the partial peening process play a significant role in the fatigue crack growth behaviour of the material and effectively result in accelerated crack propagation at the midwidth of the specimens. It has been shown in this study that partial peening can lead to a fatigue crack growth rate around twice as fast as that of the unpeened specimen.  相似文献

Residual stresses have in the past been introduced to manipulate growth rates and shapes of cracks under cyclic loads. Previously, the effectiveness of shot peening in retarding the rate of fatigue crack growth was experimentally studied. It was shown that the compressive residual stresses arising from the shot peening process can affect the rate of crack growth. Laser shock peening can produce a deeper compressive stress field near the surface than shot peening. This advantage makes this technique desirable for the manipulation of crack growth rates. This paper describes an experimental program that was carried out to establish this effect in which steel specimens were partially laser peened and subsequently subjected to cyclic loading to grow fatigue cracks. The residual stress fields generated by the laser shock peening process were measured using the neutron diffraction technique. A state of compressive stress was found near the surface and tensile stresses were measured in the mid-thickness of the specimens. Growth rates of the cracks were observed to be more affected by the tensile core than by the compressive surface stresses.  相似文献

Abstract

The influence of prior surface condition and of a shot peening treatment on the bending fatigue strength of a standard Si–Cr spring steel (SS 2090) has been investigated. This steel was initially hardened and tempered to a hardness of 52–54 HRC. After shot peening, compressive residual stresses had been introduced into a surface layer of depth ~0·3 mm, with the maximum value of ~1000 MN m?2 being found close to the surface. The effect of this treatment was to increase the fatigue limit by ~40% to 890 MN m?2. Coincident with this increase was a change in the site of fatigue initiation from a surface to a subsurface location beneath the compressive residual stress layer. The initiating inclusions, which were 20–40 μm in size, were analysed and found to be Al2O3. At stress amplitudes greater than the fatigue limit, initiation was invariably found to occur at the surface and was not always due to inclusions. Inclusion initiated failure has been modelled using the size and spatial distribution of inclusions in the test bars in addition to the variation of applied and residual stresses through the section. A crack propagation criterion based on linear elastic fracture mechanics is used, assuming that propagation is controlled by stress intensity threshold value. It is assumed that small cracks exist at oxide inclusions from the beginning of the fatigue life and that failure is associated with the propagation of one of these cracks.

Fatigue life calculation of notched components based on the elastic‐plastic fatigue fracture mechanics The life of notched components is subdivided into the pre‐crack, or crack‐initiation, and crack propagation phases within and outside notch area. It is known that a major factor governing the service life of notched components under cyclic loading is fatigue crack growth in notches. Therefore a uniform elastic‐plastic crack growth model, based on the J‐Integral, was developed which especially considers the crack opening and closure behaviour and the effect of residual stresses for the determination of crack initiation and propagation lives for cracks in notches under constant and variable‐amplitude loading. The crack growth model will be introduced and verified by experiments.  相似文献

Shot peening has been widely applied in industrial design to improve fatigue durability of high loaded machine components. The compressive residual stress induced by shot peening is in general assumed to be responsible for the improvement of material fatigue strength. In the present work a cyclic cohesive zone model is extended to analyze three-dimensional fatigue crack growth in shot-peened specimens. Fatigue crack growth behaviors in both unpeened and peened specimens are investigated using 3D finite element analysis. The parameters of the cohesive zone model have been identified in 2D unpeened specimens and are applied to predict peened specimens directly. The results indicate that shot peening strongly affects crack initiation time and crack profiles, but has little effect on crack propagation rate. It implies that the shot peening will hardly change Paris’ law used for the damage tolerant design.  相似文献

In recent years, with higher demand for improved quality and corrosion resistance, recovered substrates have been extensively used. Consequently residual stresses originated from these coatings reduce the fatigue strength of a component. Due to this negative influence occasioned by corrosion resistance protective coatings, an effective process like shot peening must be considered to improve the fatigue strength. The shot peening treatment pushes the crack sources beneath the surface in most of medium and high cycle cases due to the compressive residual stress field (CRSF) induced. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence on the fatigue life of anodic films grown on 7050-T7451 aluminium alloy by sulphuric acid anodizing, chromic acid anodizing and hard anodizing. The influence on the rotating and reverse bending fatigue strength of anodic films grown on the aluminium alloy is to degrade the stress life fatigue performance of the base material. A consistent gain in fatigue life in relation to the base material was obtained through the shot peening process in coated specimens, associated to a residual stress field compressive near the surface, useful to avoid fatigue crack nucleation and delay or even stop crack propagation.  相似文献

Shot peening is a dynamic cold‐working process involving the impingement of peening media onto a substrate surface. Shot peening is commonly used as a surface treatment technique within the aerospace industry during manufacturing to improve fatigue performance of structural components. The compressive residual stress induced during shot peening results in fatigue crack growth retardation, improving the performance of shot‐peened components. However, shot peening is a compromise between the benefit of inducing a compressive residual stress and causing detrimental surface damage. Because of the relatively soft nature of AA7050‐T7451, shot peening can result in cracking of the constituent precipitate particles, creating an initial damage state. The aim of this paper is to understand the balance and fundamentals of these competing phenomena through a comparative study throughout the fatigue lifecycle of baseline versus shot‐peened AA7050‐T7451. Microstructure and surface topology characterization and comparison of the baseline and shot‐peened AA7050‐T7451 has been performed using scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and optical profilometry techniques. A residual stress analysis through interrupted fatigue of the baseline and shot‐peened AA7050‐T7451 was completed using a combination of X‐ray diffraction and nanoindentation. The fatigue life performance of the baseline versus shot‐peened material has been evaluated, including crack initiation and propagation. Subsurface particles crack upon shot peening but did not incubate into the matrix during fatigue loading, presumably due to the compressive residual stress field. In the baseline samples, the particles were initially intact, but upon fatigue loading, crack nucleation was observed in the particles, and these cracks incubated into the matrix. In damage tolerant analysis, an initial defect size is needed for lifetime assessment, which is often difficult to determine, leading to overly conservative evaluations. This work provides a critical assessment of the mechanism for shot peening enhancement for fatigue performance and quantifies how incubation of a short crack is inhibited from an initially cracked particle into the matrix within a residual stress field.  相似文献

In landing gear, an important mechanical component for high responsible applications, wear and corrosion control is currently accomplished by chrome plating or hard anodising. However, some problems are associated with these operations. Experimental results have also shown that chrome‐plated specimens have fatigue strength lower than those of uncoated parts, attributed to high residual tensile stress and microcracks density contained into the coating. Under fatigue conditions these microcracks propagate and will cross the interface coating‐substrate and penetrate base metal without impediment. Shot peening is a surface process used to improve fatigue strength of metal components due to compressive residual stresses induced in the surface layers of the material, making the nucleation and propagation of fatigue cracks difficult. This investigation is concerned with analysis of the shot peening influence on the rotating bending fatigue strength of hard chromium electroplated AISI 4340 steel. Specimens were submitted to shot peening treatment with steel and ceramic shots and, in both cases, experimental results show increase in the fatigue life of AISI 4340 steel hard chromium electroplated, up to level of base metal without chromium. Peening using ceramic shot resulted in lower scatter in rotating bending fatigue data than steel shots.  相似文献

First, fatigue tests were performed on butt‐welded joints made of novel direct quenched ultra high strength steel with high quality welds. Two different welding processes were used: MAG and Pulsed MAG. The weld profiles, misalignments and residual stresses were measured, and the material properties of the heat‐affected zone were determined. Fatigue tests were carried out with constant amplitude tensile loading both for joints in as‐welded condition and for joints after ultrasonic peening treatment. Finally, in fatigue strength predictions, the crack initiation phase was estimated using the procedures described by Lawrence et al. [Lawrence F V, Ho N J and Mazumdar P K (1981) Predicting the fatigue resistance of welds. Annu. Rev. Mater. Sci, 11, 401–425]. The propagation phase was simply estimated using SN curves for normal quality butt welds, which may contain pre‐existing cracks or crack‐like defects eliminating the crack initiation stage.  相似文献

It is well known that shot peening is able to increase the fatigue strength and endurance of metal parts, especially with a steep stress gradient due to a notch. This positive effect is mainly put into relation with the ability of this treatment to induce a compressive residual stress state in the surface layer of material and to cause surface work hardening. Recently the application of severe shot peening (shot peening performed with severe treatment parameters) showed the ability to obtain more a remarkable improvement of the high cycle fatigue strength of steels. In this paper severe shot peening is applied to the steel 50CrMo4 and its effect in the ultra-high cycle fatigue regime is investigated. Roughness, microhardness, X-ray diffraction residual stress analysis and crystallite size measurement as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations were used for characterizing the severely deformed layer. Tension–compression high frequency fatigue tests were carried out to evaluate the effect of the applied treatment on fatigue life in the ultra-high cycle region. Fracture surface analysis by using SEM was performed with aim to investigate the mechanism of fatigue crack initiation and propagation. Results show an unexpected significant fatigue strength increase in the ultra-high cycle region after SSP surface treatment and are discussed in the light of the residual stress profile and crystallite size.  相似文献

A new mechanism modelling is proposed in this paper to explain the shot peening effect on fatigue life predictions of mechanical components. The proposed methodology is based on the crack growth analysis of shot peened specimens, which are affected by the interaction of surface roughness and residual stress produced during the shot peening process. An asymptotic stress intensity factor solution is used to include the surface roughness effect and a time‐varying residual stress function is used to change the crack tip stress ratio during the crack propagation. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the effects of surface roughness and the residual stress relaxation rate. Following this, a simplified effective residual stress model is proposed based on the developed mechanism modelling. A wide range of experimental data is used to validate the proposed mechanism modelling. Very good agreement is observed between experimental data and model predictions.  相似文献

The present paper is aimed at investigating the effect of shot peening on the high and very-high cycle plain fatigue resistance of the Al-7075-T651 alloy. Pulsating bending fatigue tests (R = 0.05) were carried out on smooth samples exploring fatigue lives comprised between 105 and 108 cycles. Three peening treatments were considered to explore different initial residual stress profiles and surface microstructural conditions. An extensive analysis of the residual stress field was carried out by measuring with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique the residual stress profile before and at the end of the fatigue tests. Fatigue crack initiation sites were investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) fractography. The surface morphology modifications induced by shot peening were evaluated using an optical profilometer. The influence of surface finishing on the fatigue resistance was quantified by eliminating the surface roughness in some peened specimens through a tribofinishing treatment. The capability of shot peening to hinder the initiation and to retard the subsequent propagation of surface cracks is discussed on the basis of a model combining a multiaxial fatigue criterion and a fracture mechanics approach.  相似文献

The effect of shot peening on the plane bending fatigue strength of a 7.1 g/cm3 sintered Cr-Mo steel was investigated. Shot peening provides surface densification, strain hardening, compressive residual stresses up to −700 MPa, without impairing the dimensional and geometrical precision of specimens. Plane bending fatigue strength increases of 30%, irrespective to the different residual stress profiles obtained by changing the shot peening parameters. The improvement is mainly due to the surface densification and strain hardening.  相似文献

As‐received or shot peened 7075‐T7351 single‐edged notch bend (SENB) specimens, 8.1‐mm thick, were fatigued at a constant maximum load and at stress ratios of R= 0.1 and 0.8 to predetermined numbers of fatigue cycles or to failure. The SENB specimens were then fractured by overload and the tunnelling crack profiles were recorded. The crack‐growth rate, da/dN, after crack initiation at the notch was determined by crack‐profile measurement and fractography at various fatigue cycles. The shot peened surface topography and roughness was also evaluated by three‐dimensional (3‐D) laser scanning microscopy. Residual stresses in the as‐received specimens and those generated by shot peening at Almen scales of 0.004A, 0.008A, 0.012A and 0.016A, were measured by an X‐ray diffraction stress analyser with an X‐ray target, CrK, every 0.1 mm to a depth of 1 mm. The 3‐D stress intensity factor of the curved crack front was determined by the superposition of the 3‐D finite element solutions of the stress intensity factor of the loaded SENB specimen without the residual stress and the stress intensity factor of the unloaded SENB specimen with a prescribed residual stress distribution. da/dN versus the resultant stress intensity factor amplitude, ΔKI, plots showed that while the residual stress locally retarded the crack‐growth rate it had no effect on the overall crack‐propagation rate.  相似文献

The effects of various surface treatment techniques on the fatigue crack growth performance of friction stir welded 2195 aluminum alloy were investigated. The objective was to reduce fatigue crack growth rates and enhance the fatigue life of welded joints. The crack growth rates were assessed and characterized for different peening conditions at a stress ratio (R) of 0.1, and 0.7. The surface and through-thickness residual stress distribution were also investigated and presented for the various regions in the weld. Tensile residual stresses introduced during the welding process were found to become significantly compressive, particularly after laser peening. The effect of the compressive stresses was deemed responsible for increasing the resistance to fatigue crack growth of the welds. The results indicate a significant reduction in fatigue crack growth rates using laser peening compared to shot peening and native welded specimens. This reduced fatigue crack growth rate was comparable to the base unwelded material.  相似文献

It is observed that the short fatigue cracks grow faster than long fatigue cracks at the same nominal driving force and even grow at stress intensity factor range below the threshold value for long cracks in titanium alloy materials. The anomalous behaviours of short cracks have a great influence on the accurate fatigue life prediction of submersible pressure hulls. Based on the unified fatigue life prediction method developed in the authors' group, a modified model for short crack propagation is proposed in this paper. The elastic–plastic behaviour of short cracks in the vicinity of crack tips is considered in the modified model. The model shows that the rate of crack propagation for very short cracks is determined by the range of cyclic stress rather than the range of the stress intensity factor controlling the long crack propagation and the threshold stress intensity factor range of short fatigue cracks is a function of crack length. The proposed model is used to calculate short crack propagation rate of different titanium alloys. The short crack propagation rates of Ti‐6Al‐4V and its corresponding fatigue lives are predicted under different stress ratios and different stress levels. The model is validated by comparing model prediction results with the experimental data.  相似文献

One method to improve fretting fatigue life is to shot peen the contact surfaces. Experimental fretting life results from specimens in a Titanium alloy with and without shot peened surfaces were evaluated numerically. The residual stresses were measured at different depths below the fretting scar and compared to the corresponding residual stress profile of an unfretted surface. Thus, the amount of stress relaxation during fretting tests was estimated. Elastic–plastic finite element computations showed that stress relaxation was locally more significant than that captured in the measurements. Three different numerical fatigue crack growth models were compared. The best agreement between experimental and numerical fatigue lives for both peened and unpeened specimens was achieved with a parametric fatigue growth procedure that took into consideration the growth behaviour along the whole front of a semi‐elliptical surface crack. Furthermore, the improved fretting fatigue life from shot peening was explained by slower crack growth rates in the shallow surface layer with compressive residual stresses from shot peening. The successful life analyses hinged on three important issues: an accurate residual stress profile, a sufficiently small start crack and a valid crack growth model.  相似文献

Effect of Surface Condition on Fatigue Strength of Die-Cast Aluminium Surface processing like milling or shot peening involves modifications of the surface and subsurface condition of a material that can be described by changes of the residual stresses, the hardness, and the surface roughness. Moreover, there is the possibility of introducing additional surface defects. In this paper the influence of these modifications on the fatigue behaviour of the aluminium die-casting alloy GD-AlSi8Cu3 is presented. S-N curves are determined for four surface conditions produced by milling, shot peening, and a combined treatment. The improvement of fatigue limit by shot peening is confirmed for this material. The additional effect of mean stresses is determined. Investigations of the fatigue fracture surfaces show that pores and pipes as well as surface defects induced by shot peening act as fatigue crack initiation sites.  相似文献
