Critical heat flux (CHF) in subcooled flow boiling under axially nonuniform heating conditions was experimentally investigated using a tube heated with a dc power source. The thickness of the tube wall in the axial direction was varied to attain axially nonuniform heating. The different thicknesses, therefore, separated the tube into regions of high heat flux and regions of low heat flux. The lengths of these regions of the tube were also varied to study the effect on the CHF. The objective of this system is to initiate boiling in the high-heat-flux region, thus increasing heat transfer, and to interrupt the bubble boundary layer in the low-heat-flux region. Because it is the initiation of boiling that increases heat transfer, the performance of such a system is linked to its effectiveness in repeatedly interrupting and re-establishing the bubble boundary layer. Our experiments, involving tubes that had sections of different thicknesses and different lengths, showed that when the heat flux in the low-heat-flux region was below the net vapor generation (NVG) heat flux, this system enhanced the CHF, but not when it was above the NVG. Also, for relatively short low-heat-flux regions, the CHF was not enhanced, presumably because there was insufficient time to interrupt the bubble boundary layer. © 1998 Scripta Technica, Heat Trans Jpn Res, 27(2): 169–178, 1998  相似文献

This study examines both high-flux flow boiling and critical heat flux (CHF) under highly subcooled conditions using FC-72 as working fluid. Experiments were performed in a horizontal flow channel that was heated along its bottom wall. High-speed video imaging and photomicrographic techniques were used to capture interfacial features and reveal the sequence of events leading to CHF. At about 80% of CHF, bubbles coalesced into oblong vapor patches while sliding along the heated wall. These patches grew in size with increasing heat flux, eventually evolving into a fairly continuous vapor layer that permitted liquid contact with the wall only in the wave troughs between vapor patches. CHF was triggered when this liquid contact was finally halted. These findings prove that the CHF mechanism for subcooled flow boiling is consistent with the interfacial lift-off mechanism proposed previously for saturated flow boiling.  相似文献

The effect of the heated length on the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) of subcooled flow boiling with water was experimentally investigated by means of a direct current heated plate made of stainless steel with various lengths. The motion of bubbles at near burnout was observed by a high‐speed video camera under atmospheric pressure conditions. Consideration was made of the critical wavelength of the Helmholtz instability in several CHF mechanistic models. The slug length at CHF almost coincided with the critical wavelength. It is further confirmed that when the heated length is shorter than the critical wavelength, a large enhancement of the CHF is seen. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Heat Trans Asian Res, 29(2): 132–143, 2000  相似文献

High heat flux removal from plasma-facing components and electronic heat sinks involves conjugate heat transfer analysis of the applicable substrate and flowing fluid. For the present case of subcooled flow boiling inside a single-side heated circular channel, the dimensional results show the significant radial, circumferential and axial variations in all thermal quantities for the present radial aspect ratio (Ro=outside radius to inside radius) of 3.0. A unified, dimensionless representation of the two-dimensional inside wall heat flux, and the dimensional inside wall heat flux (qi(φ,z)) and temperature (Ti(φ,z)) data was found and used to collapse the data for all circumferential locations. Finally, 2-D boiling curves are presented and are among the first full set of 2-D boiling data presented for a single-side heated circular configuration.  相似文献

Microchannel two‐phase flow is an effective cooling method used in microelectronics, in which the heat flux density is unevenly distributed usually. The paper is focused on numerical study the effect of aspect ratio on the flow boiling of microchannels with nonuniform heat flux. The heat source is a three‐dimensional (3D) integrated circuit. 3D microchannel model and volume of fluid method are coupled in numerical simulation. The results show that the aspect ratio has no relationship with the two‐phase pressure drop of the microchannel. It has a certain influence on the distribution of bubble shape. In terms of the heat transfer coefficient, the aspect ratio has a certain influence on a section of the inlet. Due to the nucleate boiling, the convective heat transfer in the remaining areas is the dominant factor and the average heat transfer coefficient is mainly determined by the heat flux at the bottom of the channel.  相似文献

The experimental investigation on vapor bubble growth is performed for analyzing subcooled boiling in a vertical annular channel with inner heating surface and upward water flow under atmospheric pressure. Bulk liquid mass flux ranges from 79 kg/m2s to 316 kg/m2s, and subcooling is from 40 K to 60 K. The bubble behaviors from inception to collapse are captured by High-speed photography. The performance of bubble growth recorded by the high-speed photography is given in this paper. The bubble behaviors, effect of the bubble slippage on the heat transfer, and various forces acting on the bubble are discussed.  相似文献

Forced convection boiling of subcooled water was performed in a horizontal rectangular channel with the heated surface on the bottom. The experiment was conducted for heating surfaces, 10, 20, or 40 mm in length. Microbubble emission boiling (MEB) was observed in subcooled transition boiling and was easy to generate for the shorter heating surfaces. In higher flow velocity of subcooled water, MEB was generated at even lower subcooling. Stormy MEB was observed at both the higher subcooling and the higher flow velocity of water. In the stormy MEB, the heat flux rose rapidly above the critical heat flux with larger acoustic noise and vibration. © 2001 Scripta Technica, Heat Trans Asian Res, 30(5): 426–438, 2001  相似文献

In order to develop a mechanistic model for the subcooled flow boiling process, the key issues which must be addressed are wall heat flux partitioning and interfacial (condensation) heat transfer. The sink term in the two-fluid models for void fraction prediction is provided by the condensation rate at the vapor-liquid interface. Low pressure subcooled flow boiling experiments, using water, were performed using a vertical flat plate heater to investigate the bubble collapse process. A high-speed CCD camera was used to record the bubble collapse in the bulk subcooled liquid. Based on the analyses of these digitized images, bubble collapse rates and the associated heat transfer rate were determined. The experimental data were in turn used to correlate the bubble collapse rate and the interfacial heat transfer rate. These correlations are functions of bubble Reynolds number, liquid Prandtl number, Jacob number, and Fourier number. The correlations account for both the effect of forced convection heat transfer and thickening of the thermal boundary layer as the vapor bubble condenses which in turn makes the condensation heat transfer time dependent. Comparison of the measured experimental data with those predicted from the correlations show that predictions are well within ±25% of the experimentally measured values. These correlations have also been compared with those available in the literature.  相似文献

Critical heat flux (CHF) of liquid hydrogen (LH2) flow boiling under microgravity is vital for designing space cryogenic propellant conveying pipe since the excursion of wall temperature may cause system failure. In this study, a two-dimensional axisymmetric model based on the wall heat flux partition (WHFP) model was proposed to predict the CHF condition under microgravity including the wall temperature and the CHF location. The proposed numerical model was validated to demonstrate a good agreement between the simulated and experimentally reported results. Then, the wall temperature distribution and the CHF location under different gravity conditions were compared. In addition, the WHFP and vapor-liquid distribution along the wall under microgravity were predicted and its difference with terrestrial gravity condition was also analysed and reported. Finally, the effects of flow velocity and inlet sub-cooling on the wall temperature distributions were analysed under microgravity and terrestrial gravity conditions, respectively. The results indicate that the CHF location moves upstream about 5.25 m from 1g to 10−4g since the void fraction near the wall reaches the breakpoint of CHF condition much earlier under the microgravity condition. Furthermore, the increase of the velocity and decrease of the sub-cooling have smaller effects on the CHF location during LH2 flow boiling under microgravity.  相似文献

Critical heat flux (CHF) of subcooled flow boiling with water in a tube with an internal twisted tape under nonuniform heating conditions was experimentally investigated by direct current heating of a stainless steel tube. The boiling curve of the subcooled flow under a high heat flux was measured to confirm the characteristics of the nucleate boiling. The net vapor generation (NVG) point almost agreed with the Levy correlation. The increase of the CHF with an internal twisted tape under nonuniform heating conditions was explained by assuming an alternate development and disruption of the bubble boundary layer in which the bubble boundary layer is assumed to be disrupted when the heat flux is lower than the NVG heat flux. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc. This paper deals with heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) in subcooled flow boiling offering a fundamental study aimed at high heat flux cooling. Experiments with water at 0.12 MPa were conducted in a mass velocity range from 500 kg/m2s to 15,000 kg/m2s (velocity from 0.5 m/s to 15 m/s) and subcooling from 20 K to 60 K. A sheet of stainless steel (80 mm in heated length, 10 mm wide, and 0.2 mm thick) was mounted flush with a sidewall of a vertical rectangular channel (cross-section 20 mm by 30 mm) and heated directly using direct current. It was found that mass velocity and subcooling strongly affect CHF and heat transfer in non-boiling convection and partial nucleate boiling regimes. These two parameters have no appreciable influence in the fully developed nucleate boiling regime. In the parameter range used, CHF reached 15 MW/m2. Boiling bubble behavior just prior to reaching CHF was found to vary depending on mass velocity and subcooling. 1998 Scripta Technica, Heat Trans Jpn Res, 27(5): 376–389, 1998  相似文献

The pool boiling characteristics of dilute dispersions of alumina nanoparticles in water were studied. Consistent with other nanofluid studies, it was found that a significant enhancement in critical heat flux (CHF) can be achieved at modest nanoparticle concentrations (<0.1% by volume). During experimentation and subsequent inspection, formation of a porous layer of nanoparticles on the heater surface occurred during nucleate boiling. This layer significantly changes surface texture of the heater wire surface which could be the reason for improvement in the CHF value. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Heat transfer for flow boiling of water and critical heat flux (CHF) experiments in a half‐circumferentially heated round tube under low‐pressure conditions were carried out. To clarify the flow patterns in the heated section, experiments in the round tube under the same conditions were also carried out, and their results were compared. The experiments were conducted with atmospheric‐pressure water in test sections with inner diameter D = 6 mm, heated length L = 360 mm, inlet water subcooling ΔTin = 80 K, and mass velocity G from 0 to 2000 kg/(m2·s) for the half‐circumferentially heated round tube and from 0 to 7000 kg/(m2·s) for the full‐circumferentially heated tube. The experimental data demonstrated that the wall temperature near the outlet of the half‐circumferentially heated tube remained almost the same until CHF. It was found that burnout occurred when the flow regime changed from churn flow to annular flow, and the liquid film on the heated wall dried out although liquid film on the unheated wall remained.

Experimental investigations were conducted to explore the characteristics of subcooled nucleate boiling of binary mixtures composed of water and ethanol on very thin wires, and an emphasis was addressed to observe bubble movement and bubble jet flow. The experiments exhibited many different bubble jet flows, such as continuous, discontinuous, diverged, bifurcate jet flows, and small bubble spraying, corresponding to different vapor bubble sizes and bubble‐moving modes such as bubble initial momentum and bubble‐generating frequency. The bubble movement within the jet flow also was analyzed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present paper reports the results of a visualization study of the burnout in subcooled flow boiling of water, with square cross section annular geometry (formed by a central heater rod contained in a duct characterized by a square cross section). The coolant velocity is in the range 3–10 m/s. High speed movies of flow pattern in subcooled flow boiling of water from the onset of nucleate boiling up to physical burnout of the heater are recorded. From video images (single frames taken with a stroboscope light and an exposure time of 1 μs), the following general behaviour of vapour bubbles was observed: when the rate of bubble generation is increasing, with bubbles growing in the superheated layer close to the heating wall, their coalescence produces a type of elongated bubble called vapour blanket. One of the main features of the vapour blanket is that it is rooted to the nucleation site on the heated surface. Bubble dimensions are given as a function of thermal-hydraulic tested conditions for the whole range of velocity until the burnout region. A qualitative analysis of the behaviour of four stainless steel heater wires with different macroscopic surface finishes is also presented, showing the importance of this parameter on the dynamics of the bubbles and on the critical heat flux.
