With the advent of the World Wide Web (WWW), we are now on the cusp of a revolution in computer technology that will dramatically enhance medical education. An historical analogy might be Johann Gutenberg's invention of movable type in the 1400's-radically decreasing the cost, time, and expertise required to reproduce printed materials. Now, the WWW can decrease the cost of disseminating medical educational materials. When an educational module is authored for the Web, it can be placed on a computer "server" which in turn, distributes the program on the WWW to anyone with a computer and Internet access. Rapidly emerging standards are being developed to allow increasingly rich educational experiences on the Internet. With the introduction of HTML (hypertext markup language), a standardized method of placing text and graphics, as well as the connections between them, was created.  相似文献

We have created databases and software applications for the analysis of DNA mutations in the human p53 gene, the human hprt gene and the rodent transgenic lacZ locus. The databases themselves are stand-alone dBase files and the software for analysis of the databases runs on IBM- compatible computers. The software created for these databases permits filtering, ordering, report generation and display of information in the database. In addition, a significant number of routines have been developed for the analysis of single base substitutions. One method of obtaining the databases and software is via the World Wide Web (WWW). Open home page http://sunsite.unc.edu/dnam/mainpage.ht ml with a WWW browser. Alternatively, the databases and programs are available via public ftp from anonymous@sunsite.unc.edu. There is no password required to enter the system. The databases and software are found in subdirectory pub/academic/biology/dna-mutations. Two other programs are available at the WWW site, a program for comparison of mutational spectra and a program for entry of mutational data into a relational database.  相似文献

A new computational method (chimeric alignment) has been developed to detect chimeric 16S rRNA artifacts generated during PCR amplification from mixed bacterial populations. In contrast to other nearest-neighbor methods (e.g., CHECK_CHIMERA) that define sequence similarity by k-tuple matching, the chimeric alignment method uses the score from dynamic programming alignments. Further, the chimeric alignments are displayed to the user to assist in sequence classification. The distribution of improvement scores for 500 authentic, nonchimeric sequences and 300 artificial chimeras (constructed from authentic sequences) was used to study the sensitivity and accuracy of both chimeric alignment and CHECK_CHIMERA. At a constant rate of authentic sequence misclassification (5%), chimeric alignment incorrectly classified 13% of the artificial chimeras versus 14% for CHECK_CHIMERA. Interestingly, only 1% of nonchimeras and 10% of chimeras were misclassified by both programs, suggesting that optimum performance is obtained by using the two methods to assign sequences to three classes: high-probability nonchimeras, high-probability chimeras, and sequences that need further study by other means. This study suggests that k-tuple-based matching methods are more sensitive than alignment-based methods when there is significant parental sequence similarity, while the opposite becomes true as the sequences become more distantly related. The Internet technology known as the World Wide Web is rapidly emerging as the most powerful medium of mass communication this century and it can be harnessed to dispense global, cost-effective, high-quality, multimedia patient education material. This paper reviews how the Internet has progressed from delivering simple static, text-based material to sophisticated interactive Web sites based on CGI Technology. Interactive Web sites can be used to deliver health assessment questionnaires and Web-based decision-support systems can give patients advice on the emergency management of acute medical problems. The advantages and drawbacks of this new technology, including information regulation and quality are discussed. The role of the Hospital Intranet as a patient education resource is described. The paper concludes by illustrating how patients can appreciate the 3-D structure of bones and organs using virtual reality in a VRML Web environment.  相似文献

Codon usage in 87 602 genes has been calculated using the nucleotide sequence data obtained from the GenBank Genetic Sequence Data Bank (Release 90.0; September 1995). The database is called the CUTG Database; the complete form of the database can be obtained by anonymous ftp from DDBJ and a part of the database, which lists the frequency of codon use in each organism, is made searchable through our World Wide Web server.  相似文献

The GenBank (Registered Trademark symbol) sequence database incorporates DNA sequences from all available public sources, primarily through the direct submission of sequence data from individual laboratories and from large-scale sequencing projects. Most submitters use the BankIt (Web) or Sequin programs to format and send sequence data. Data exchange with the EMBL Data Library and the DNA Data Bank of Japan helps ensure comprehensive worldwide coverage. GenBank data is accessible through NCBI's integrated retrieval system, Entrez, which integrates data from the major DNA and protein sequence databases along with taxonomy, genome and protein structure information. MEDLINE (Registered Trademark symbol) s from published articles describing the sequences are included as an additional source of biological annotation through the PubMed search system. Sequence similarity searching is offered through the BLAST series of database search programs. In addition to FTP, Email, and server/client versions of Entrez and BLAST, NCBI offers a wide range of World Wide Web retrieval and analysis services based on GenBank data. World Wide Web (WWW) standards have been established for the transmission of and remote consultation on medical information and records, including medical images, extracted from an existing hospital information system. A software package called Osiris is being used for the display and manipulation of medical images in a hospital-based picture archiving and communication system. Recent extensions of Osiris, through the integration of WWW navigational tools, allow easy access to a variety of clinical data from patient records. A special interface allows access to radiologic images, laboratory results, and related textual information through public-domain software programs. These technologic advances offer medical professionals the convenience and ease of use that have made WWW and Internet navigation so popular in the academic community.  相似文献

With the ascension of the Internet as an information resource, Web sites are likely to be the first exposure applicants have to specific programs. The authors evaluated professional psychology program Web sites for ethnic and sexual orientation minority content, discovering that diversity content of Web sites was considerably less than in previously examined paper application materials. Clinical psychology programs were more likely to state a commitment to diversity training while counseling psychology programs were more likely to state a diversity minor/track. School psychology programs had the lowest diversity content on their Web pages. This article explores how graduate psychology program Web sites communicate multicultural information and offers recommendations on using the World Wide Web as a cost-effective tool to attract a diverse student body. Tandem repeats finder: a program to analyze DNA sequences   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A tandem repeat in DNA is two or more contiguous, approximate copies of a pattern of nucleotides. Tandem repeats have been shown to cause human disease, may play a variety of regulatory and evolutionary roles and are important laboratory and analytic tools. Extensive knowledge about pattern size, copy number, mutational history, etc. for tandem repeats has been limited by the inability to easily detect them in genomic sequence data. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for finding tandem repeats which works without the need to specify either the pattern or pattern size. We model tandem repeats by percent identity and frequency of indels between adjacent pattern copies and use statistically based recognition criteria. We demonstrate the algorithm's speed and its ability to detect tandem repeats that have undergone extensive mutational change by analyzing four sequences: the human frataxin gene, the human beta T cellreceptor locus sequence and two yeast chromosomes. These sequences range in size from 3 kb up to 700 kb. A World Wide Web server interface atc3.biomath.mssm.edu/trf.html has been established for automated use of the program.  相似文献

Internet-mediated psychological assessment procedures can play an important role in behavioral telehealth, but their use is not unproblematic. Possible uses of World Wide Web-based tests are discussed. Published empirical evaluations of Web-based personality tests indicate that they can be reliable and valid. However, evidence exists that Web-based versions of tests may not always measure the same constructs as their traditional antecedents: Equivalence cannot be assumed. Web-based clinical assessment seems viable, but there are potential difficulties with measurement of some constructs (particularly negative affect), as well as ethical considerations. The long-term objective of this project is to make health sciences librarians more effective in their role by using emerging technologies to deliver timely continuing education (CE) programs to them regardless of their physical location. The goals of the one-year planning project at the William H. Welch Medical Library are to plan, implement, and evaluate a pilot CE program that includes (1) a three-day general-interest session organized in four tracks: Market Forces and Management, Information Technology and the Internet, Publishing and Copyright, and Education; (2) a one-day special topic session on the Informatics of the Human Genome Project; and (3) an electronic poster session in parallel with the general-interest session. The program will be offered in three simultaneous formats: (1) on-site, in a distance-learning classroom in Baltimore; (2) as a telecourse, in a similar classroom outside Washington, DC; and (3) online, via the World Wide Web. An electronic proceedings of the entire program will be published on the Web to serve as a continuously available CE resource for health sciences librarians. This paper gives an overview of the planning process, presents a status report on the programmatic and technical implementation of the pilot project at its midpoint, and discusses future directions for the program.  相似文献

The Portable Dictionary of the Mouse Genome is a database for personal computers that contains information on approximately 10,000 loci in the mouse, along with data on homologs in several other mammalian species, including human, rat, cat, cow, and pig. Key features of the dictionary are its compact size, its network independence, and the ability to convert the entire dictionary to a wide variety of common application programs. Another significant feature is the integration of DNA sequence accession data. Loci in the dictionary can be rapidly resorted by chromosomal position, by type, by human homology, or by gene effect. The dictionary provides an accessible, easily manipulated set of data that has many uses--from a quick review of loci and gene nomenclature to the design of experiments and analysis of results. The Portable Dictionary is available in several formats suitable for conversion to different programs and computer systems. It can be obtained on disk or from Internet Gopher servers (mickey.utmen.edu or anat4.utmen.edu), an anonymous FTP site (nb.utmem.edu in the directory pub/genedict), and a World Wide Web server (http://mickey.utmem.edu/front.html).  相似文献

This paper outlines the development of the Sustaining Oncology Studies Information Resources (SOS Europe), a multimedia World Wide Web (WWW) prototype providing support to experimental and clinical cancer researchers, general practitioners, industry personnel, and university students in the field of oncology in Europe and Italy. The system utilizes applications developed for the WWW and is designed in the most easily understandable approaches possible. The prototype now structures oncology-related information available on the Internet and also places resources maintained locally at users' disposal. The system utilizes a WWW browser as a design platform and HTML to build its Home and subpages and to create hyperlinks to internal and external resources.  相似文献

With the systematic sequencing of the yeast genome, yeast biology has entered a new era where novel challenges have to be faced. One challenge is the identification of the function of the several hundred novel genes discovered by genome sequencing. Another is to understand how all yeast genes act in concert to ensure and maintain cell organization. Two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis is the technique of choice to take up these challenges because it provides the opportunity of obtaining an overall view of genome expression. In prospect of these studies we have undertaken the construction of a yeast 2-D gel protein database that contains information on polypeptides of the yeast protein map. In this paper we report the information presently contained in this database. The reported information includes the identification of 250 protein spots and the characterization of polypeptides corresponding to N-terminal acetylated proteins, mitochondrial proteins, glucose-repressed proteins, heat shock induced proteins and proteins encoded by intron-containing genes. In all, 600 spots are annotated. These data can be accessed on the Yeast Protein Map server through the World Wide Web network.  相似文献

The introduction of new communication technologies such as the World Wide Web is creating unique opportunities for civil engineering educators to develop new classroom collaboration methods, where student teams can interact remotely in a virtual team environment. Whereas traditional project collaboration requires regularly scheduled face-to-face meetings, technologies such as the Web are introducing concepts such as asynchronous collaboration, remote videoconferencing, and centralized information centers. These remote forms of collaboration introduce a unique set of questions and issues into the civil engineering domain such as the efficiency of the technology and the appropriateness of the technology. This paper introduces one approach to examining these issues through the use of benchmarks developed specifically for analyzing remote collaboration within Web-based teams. This paper introduces and summarizes results from the first 4 years of a benchmarking study focusing on Web-based collaboration technologies within the civil engineering classroom.  相似文献
