The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different weight concentrations of silver (0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 wt.%) on the microstructure, hardness and wear properties of the gravity cast zinc–aluminium based alloy ZA-12. The alloys were manufactured under nitrogen protective atmosphere by a gravity casting process. Metallographic studies reveal that the addition of silver to the standard ZA-12 alloy changed the volume fraction and structure of the primary β-dendrites in the ZA-12 alloy. Also, it was observed that the addition of silver to ZA12 alloy enhanced the hardness and wear properties effectively. However, the corrosion resistance was decreased with increasing silver content. In addition to this, the highest hardness value among experimental alloys was obtained for the alloy containing 0.7 wt.% Ag with 116 HB. The wear rate for all applied loads is decreased with rising silver content. A similar trend was observed for the friction coefficient. The alloy containing 0.7 wt.% Ag exhibited the highest wear resistance at all loads.  相似文献

Binary Mg–xCa alloys and the quaternary Mg–Ca–Mn–xZn were studied to investigate their bio-corrosion and mechanical properties. The surface morphology of specimens was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results of mechanical properties show that the yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation of quaternary alloy increased significantly with the addition of zinc (Zn) up to 4 wt.%. However, further addition of Zn content beyond 4 wt.% did not improve yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. In contrast, increasing calcium (Ca) content has a deleterious effect on binary Mg–Ca alloys. Compression tests of the magnesium (Mg) alloys revealed that the compression strength of quaternary alloy was higher than that of binary alloy. However, binary Mg–Ca alloy showed higher reduction in compression strength after immersion in simulated body fluid. The bio-corrosion behaviour of the binary and quaternary Mg alloys were investigated using immersion tests and electrochemical tests. Electrochemical tests shows that the corrosion potential (Ecorr) of binary Mg–2Ca significantly shifted toward nobeler direction from −1996.8 to −1616.6 mVSCE with the addition of 0.5 wt.% manganese (Mn) and 2 wt.% Zn content. However, further addition of Zn to 7 wt.% into quaternary alloy has the reverse effect. Immersion tests show that the quaternary alloy accompanied by two secondary phases presented higher corrosion resistance compared to binary alloys with single secondary phase. The degradation behaviour demonstrates that Mg–2Ca–0.5Mn–2Zn alloy had the lowest degradation rate among quaternary alloys. In contrast, the binary Mg–2Ca alloy demonstrated higher corrosion rates, with Mg–4Ca alloy having the highest rating. Our analysis showed the Mg–2Ca–0.5Mn–2Zn alloy with suitable mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance can be used as biodegradable implants.  相似文献

A high strength Mg–8.0Zn–1.0Al–0.5Cu–0.5Mn (wt.%) magnesium alloy with outstanding ductility was developed using a common casting technique and heat treatment. The microstructure of the as-cast alloy is composed of α-Mg, MgZn, MgZnCu and Al–Mn phases. After the solution treatment and subsequent two-step aging treatment, the yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation of the alloy at peak hardness reach 228 MPa, 328 MPa and 16.0% at room temperature, respectively. The comprehensive mechanical properties of the alloy are superior to almost all other high performance casting Mg alloys.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to develop a comparative experimental study interrelating mechanical properties, solidification thermal parameters and microstructure characteristics of a hypoeutectic Sn–4 wt.% Zn, a hypereutectic Sn–12 wt.% Zn and a eutectic Sn–9 wt.% Zn solder alloys. A water-cooled vertical upward unidirectional solidification system was used to obtain the samples. It was found that a more homogeneous distribution of the eutectic mixture, which occurs for smaller dendritic spacings in hypoeutectic and hypereutectic alloys, increases the ultimate tensile strength. The resulting microstructure of the eutectic Sn-9 wt.% Zn alloy has induced higher mechanical strength than those of the Sn–4 wt.% Zn and Sn–12 wt.% Zn alloys. It was found that the eutectic alloy experiences a microstructural transition from globular-to-needle-like Zn-rich morphologies which depend on the solidification growth rate. It is also shown that a globular-like Zn-rich morphology provides higher ultimate tensile strength than a needle-like Zn-rich eutectic morphology.  相似文献

The Mg–1Zn–xSr (x = 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 wt.%) alloys have been prepared by zone purifying solidification followed by backward extrusion (BE). The grain size was reduced and the hardness was improved with the increased concentration of strontium (Sr) after backward extrusion. The BE–Mg–1Zn–0.8Sr alloy was mostly composed of fine precipitates (MgZn and Mg17Sr2) and Mg matrix. At the same time, the mechanical properties of BE–Mg–Zn–Sr alloys were increased with the increment of strontium, which were strongly associated with fine average grain size and homogeneous secondary precipitates. The degradation rate is significantly increased when Sr content is over 0.8 wt.%. The homogenous degradation rate is achieved. The degradation products show good biocompatibility evaluated by MTT method using L929 cell line. It is demonstrated that the micro-alloying element of Sr is a potential approach to develop novel Mg–Zn based biomaterials.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of Ag addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-extruded Mg–6Zn–2Sn–0.4Mn-based alloys. Ag addition resulted in the formation of fine submicron-sized Mg–Ag particles, grain refinement, and weaker basal texture in the alloys. The Ag-containing extruded alloys had better mechanical properties than the alloys without Ag. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation of alloys containing 1 wt.% Ag were 352 MPa and 19%, respectively.  相似文献

The effects of Ca addition on the as-cast microstructure and mechanical properties of the Mg–3Ce–1.2Mn–1Zn (wt.%) alloy were investigated by using optical and electron microscopes, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, and tensile and creep tests. The results indicate that the additions of 0.3–0.9 wt.%Ca to the Mg–3Ce–1.2Mn–1Zn alloy do not cause an obvious change in the morphology and distribution for the Mg12Ce phase in the alloy. However, the grains and secondary dendrite arm spacings of the Ca-containing alloys are refined, and an increase in Ca amount from 0.3 wt.% to 0.9 wt.% causes the grain size and secondary dendrite arm spacings to gradually decrease, respectively. In addition, the additions of 0.3–0.9 wt.%Ca to the Mg–3Ce–1.2Mn–1Zn alloy can effectively improve the as-cast tensile and creep properties of the alloy, and an increase in Ca amount from 0.3 wt.% to 0.9 wt.% causes the as-cast tensile and creep properties to gradually increase, respectively.  相似文献

The Mg–5.3 wt.%Zn–1.13 wt.%Nd–0.51 wt.%La–0.28 wt.%Pr–0.79 wt.%Zr alloy prepared by direct chill casting is subjected to hot extrusion. The effects of extrusion ratio and temperature on microstructure and tensile mechanical properties have been studied. The results indicate coarse grains of as-cast alloys are refined with extrusion ratio increasing from 0 to 9. The eutectic constituents are elongated along extrusion direction. However, further increase of extrusion ratio has a little influence on grain refinement and the improvement of mechanical properties of the alloy. Dynamic recrystallisation is the main mechanism of grain refinement during hot extrusion. Raising extrusion temperature results in grain coarsening. Grain shape becomes more equiaxed-like with raising extrusion temperature. At the same time, mechanical properties decrease with the increase of extrusion temperature.  相似文献

The influence of Zn addition (0, 0.5, 1.5, 4.0 and 6.0 wt.%) on hot tearing behaviour of Mg–0.5 wt.% Ca alloy was investigated using a constrained rod casting (CRC) apparatus. The effects of mould temperature and grain refinement on the hot tearing susceptibility (HTS) were studied. Hot tears were observed with 3D X-ray tomography and the tear volumes were quantified. Results show that the Zn addition increases the HTS of Mg–0.5Ca alloys. At a mould temperature of 250 °C, all alloys investigated except Mg–0.5Ca–6Zn alloy show severe HTS. An increase in the mould temperature from 250 °C to 450 °C did not reduce the HTS in Mg–0.5Ca–1.5Zn and Mg–0.5Ca–4Zn alloys. Among all the investigated alloys, Mg–0.5Ca–4Zn alloy exhibits severe HTS as it completely broke away from the sprue–rod junction. The HTS of alloys was well correlated with the susceptible temperature range (ΔTs). An increase in ΔTs increased the HTS. The hot tears propagated along the grain boundaries through liquid film rupture. Grain refinement by Zr addition improved the hot tearing resistance of Mg–0.5Ca–4Zn alloy as the fine grain structure facilitated the easy feeding of liquid into the last area of solidification and accommodated the developed strain more effectively.  相似文献

A new biodegradable magnesium–zinc–strontium (Mg–Zn–Sr) alloy was developed and studied for medical implant applications. This first study investigated the alloy processing (casting, rolling, and heat treatment), microstructures, mechanical properties, and degradation properties in simulated body fluid (SBF). Aging treatment of the ZSr41 alloy at 175 °C for 8 h improved the mechanical properties when compared to those of the as-cast alloy. Specifically, the aged ZSr41 alloy had an ultimate tensile strength of 270 MPa, Vickers hardness of 71.5 HV, and elongation at failure of 12.8%. The mechanical properties of the ZSr41 alloy were superior as compared with those of pure magnesium and met the requirements for load-bearing medical implants. Furthermore, the immersion of the ZSr41 alloy in SBF showed a degradation mode that progressed cyclically, alternating between pitting and localized corrosion. The steady-state average degradation rate of the aged ZSr41 alloy in SBF was 0.96 g/(m2·hr), while the pH of SBF immersion solution increased. The corrosion current density of the ZSr41 alloy in SBF solution was 0.41 mA/mm2, which was much lower than 1.67 mA/mm2 for pure Mg under the same conditions. In summary, compared to pure Mg, the mechanical properties of the new ZSr41 alloy improved while the degradation rate decreased due to the addition of Zn and Sr alloying elements and specific processing conditions. The superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the new ZSr41 alloy make it a promising alloy for next-generation implant applications.  相似文献

The Al–5.0 wt% Cu–0.6 wt% Mn alloys with different Fe contents were prepared by gravity die casting and squeeze casting. The difference in microstructures and mechanical properties of the T5 heat-treated alloys was examined by tensile test, optical microscopy, deep etching technique, scanning electron microscope and electron probe micro-analyzer. The results show that both β-Fe and α (CuFe) are observed in T5 heat-treated gravity die cast alloy and only α (CuFe) appears in the squeeze cast alloy when the Fe content is 0.5 wt%. When the Fe content is more than 1.0 wt%, the main Fe-rich intermetallics is α (CuFe) in both squeeze cast and gravity die cast alloys. The mechanical properties of both the gravity die cast and squeeze cast alloys decrease gradually with the increase of Fe content due to the decreased volume fraction of precipitation particles, the increased volume fraction of Fe-rich intermetallics and the increased size of α (Al) dendrites. The squeeze cast alloys with different Fe contents have superior mechanical properties compared to the gravity die cast alloys, which is mainly attributed to the reduction of porosity and refinement of Fe-rich intermetallics and α (Al) dendrite. In particularly, the elongation of the squeeze cast alloys is less sensitive to the Fe content than that of the gravity die cast alloys. An elongation level of 13.7% is obtained in squeeze cast alloy even when the Fe content is as high as 1.5%, while that of the gravity die cast alloy is only 5.3%.  相似文献

Three kinds of A356 based composites reinforced with 3 wt.% Al2O3 (average particle size: 170 μm), 3 wt.% SiC (average particle size: 15 μm), and 3 wt.% of mixed Al2O3–SiC powders (a novel composite with equal weights of reinforcement) were fabricated in this study via a two-step approach. This first process step was semi-solid stir casting, which was followed by rolling as the second process step. Electroless deposition of a copper coating onto the reinforcement was used to improve the wettability of the ceramic particles by the molten A356 alloy. From microstructural characterization, it was found that coarse alumina particles were most effective as obstacles for grain growth during solidification. The rolling process broke the otherwise present fine silicon platelets, which were mostly present around the Al2O3 particles. The rolling process was also found to cause fracture of silicon particles, improve the distribution of fine SiC particles, and eliminate porosity remaining after the first casting process step. Examination of the mechanical properties of the obtained composites revealed that samples which contained a bimodal ceramic reinforecment of fine SiC and coarse Al2O3 particles had the highest strength and hardness.  相似文献

This research focuses on the development of new titanium (Ti) alloys with a low Young's modulus for use in removable implants. In this study, Ti-30Zr alloy was selected as the base alloy, and the effect of Mo addition on the microstructures, Young's moduli, and tensile properties of Ti-30Zr-(0–8 wt.% Mo) alloys was investigated in this study to assess the mechanical compatibility of these alloys for biomedical applications. Further, the cytocompatibility of a part of the designed alloys was examined. The experimental results indicate that both the microstructures and the mechanical properties of the designed alloys are strongly affected by the Mo contents. The Ti-30Zr-(6, 7 wt.%) Mo alloys, located near the boundary of (β + ω)/β with a metastable structure, show a good combination of a low Young's modulus, high tensile strength, fairly large elongation. In addition, Ti–30Zr–7Mo alloy is highly cytocompatible.  相似文献

The principal aim of the present work was to investigate the effects of minor additions of nickel and zirconium on the strength of cast aluminum alloy 354 at ambient and high temperatures. Tensile properties of the as-cast and heat-treated alloys were determined at room temperature and at high temperatures (190 °C, 250 °C, 350 °C). The results show that Zr reacts only with Ti, Si and Al. From the quality index charts constructed for these alloys, the quality index attains minimum and maximum values of 259 MPa and 459 MPa, in the as-cast and solution-treated conditions; also, maximum and minimum values of yield strength are observed at 345 MPa and 80 MPa, respectively, within the series of aging treatments applied. A decrease in tensile properties of ∼10% with the addition of 0.4 wt.% nickel is attributed to a nickel–copper reaction. The reduction in mechanical properties due to addition of different elements is attributed principally to the increase in the percentage of intermetallic phase particles formed during solidification; such particles act as stress concentrators, decreasing the alloy ductility. Tensile test results at ambient temperatures show a slight increase (∼10%) in alloys with Zr and Zr/Ni additions, particularly at aging temperatures above 240 °C. Additions of Zr and Zr + Ni increase the high temperature tensile properties, in particular for the alloy containing 0.2 wt.% Zr + 0.2 wt.% Ni, which exhibits an increase of more than 30% in the tensile properties at 300 °C compared with the base 354 alloy.  相似文献

NbCr2 Laves phase alloyed with 0–7 wt.% Si was fabricated by mechanical alloying followed by hot pressing. The influence of silicon on the mechanical properties and oxidation behavior of NbCr2 were investigated. It was revealed that Si addition has a beneficial effect on the oxidation resistance and fracture toughness of NbCr2 alloy. The addition of Si partially occupies the Cr site in the Laves phase and partially forms the hard Nb5Si3 phase, which can yield an increase in the hardness of as-HPed NbCr2 alloys. When alloying with 5 wt.% silicon, the fracture toughness value of NbCr2 reaches the highest (6.45 MPa √m) which is about 13% more than that of unalloyed NbCr2 and is 4 times higher than that of cast materials (1.2 MPa √m). Addition of silicon also resulted in a substantial improvement in the oxidation resistance of the NbCr2 alloys exposed in air at 1373 K and 1473 K.  相似文献

In this paper, a new magnesium alloy Mg–12Zn–4Al–0.5Ca (ZAX12405) was prepared by squeeze casting. The effects of processing parameters including applied pressure, pouring temperature and dwell time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of squeeze-cast ZAX12405 alloy were investigated. It was found that squeeze-cast ZAX12405 alloy exhibited finer microstructure and much better mechanical properties than gravity casting alloy. Increasing the applied pressure led to significant cast densification and a certain extent of grain refinement in the microstructure, along with obvious promotion in mechanical properties. Lowering the pouring temperature refined the microstructure of ZAX12405 alloy, but deteriorated the cast densification, resulting in that the mechanical properties firstly increased and then decreased. Increasing the dwell time promoted cast densification and mechanical properties just before the solidification process ended. A combination of highest applied pressure (120 MPa), medium pouring temperature (650 °C) and dwell time (30 s) brought the highest mechanical properties, under which the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and elongation to failure (Ef) of the alloy reached 211 MPa, 113 MPa and 5.2% at room temperature. Comparing with the gravity casting ZAX12405 alloy, the UTS and Ef increased 40% and 300%, respectively. For squeeze-cast Mg–12Zn–4Al–0.5Ca alloy, cast densification was considered more important than microstructure refinement for the promotion of mechanical properties.  相似文献

The beta-titanium alloys are promising materials for bioapplications but their processing via melting is difficult. Coarse grains have been observed in as-cast specimens. Subsequent thermo-mechanical processing seems to be necessary in order to obtain fine-grained microstructure with better mechanical properties. The grain size can be decreased significantly by addition of small boron amount. In this work Ti–35Nb–6Ta alloy with various B additions (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 wt.%) has been studied. Even the smallest amount of B leads to significant grain refinement in Ti–35Nb–6Ta alloy (from 1300 to about 350 μm). Slight grain refinement has been observed also after hot forging and solution treatment. TiB particles emerged in specimens due to B addition. These particles contribute to changes in mechanical properties not only in hot forged and solution treated specimens (hardness increase from 140 to 180 HV10), but also in cold swaged specimens (hardness from 230 to 250 HV10, tensile strength from 800 to 920 MPa). The hardness values can be increased up to 370 HV10 during aging at 400 °C (specimen with 0.5 wt.% B). It has been observed that specimens with low boron addition 0.05 wt.% possess no cytotoxicity. On the other hand in specimens with 0.1 wt.% B or more slight adverse effect on cytotoxicity has been observed.  相似文献

Structure and mechanical properties of the novel casting AJ62 (Mg–6Al–2Sr) alloy developed for elevated temperature applications were studied. The AJ62 alloy was compared to commercial casting AZ91 (Mg–9Al–1Zn) and WE43 (Mg–4Y–3RE) alloys. The structure was examined by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectrometry. Mechanical properties were characterized by Viskers hardness measurements in the as-cast state and after a long-term heat treatment at 250 °C/150 hours. Compressive mechanical tests were also carried out both at room and elevated temperatures. Compressive creep tests were conducted at a temperature of 250 °C and compressive stresses of 60, 100 and 140 MPa. The structure of the AJ62 alloy consisted of primary α-Mg dendrites and interdendritic nework of the Al4Sr and massive Al3Mg13Sr phases. By increasing the cooling rate during solidification from 10 and 120 K/s the average dendrite arm thickness decreased from 18 to 5 μm and the total volume fraction of the interdendritic phases from 20% to 30%. Both factors slightly increased hardness and compressive strength. The room temperature compressive strength and hardness of the alloy solidified at 30 K/s were 298 MPa and 50 HV 5, i.e. similar to those of the as-cast WE43 alloy and lower than those of the AZ91 alloy. At 250 °C the compressive strength of the AJ62 alloy decreased by 50 MPa, whereas those of the AZ91 and WE43 alloys by 100 and 20 MPa, respectively. The creep rate of the AJ62 alloy was higher than that of the WE43 alloy, but significantly lower in comparison with the AZ91 alloy. Different thermal stabilities of the alloys were discussed and related to structural changes during elevated temperature expositions.  相似文献

Nanostructured Ti–31.0Fe–9.0Sn and sub-micrometer structured Ti–39.3Nb–13.3Zr–10.7Ta (wt.%) β-type alloys, exhibiting different microstructures and dissimilar mechanical properties, have been prepared by copper mold casting. The microstructure, mechanical behavior and corrosion resistance, in simulated body fluid, of both alloys have been investigated and compared to those of commercial Ti–6Al–4V. Nanoindentation experiments reveal that the Ti–31.0Fe–9.0Sn rods exhibit very large hardness (H  9 GPa) and high Young's modulus. Conversely, the Ti–39.3Nb–13.3Zr–10.7Ta alloy is mechanically softer but it is interesting for biomedical application because of its rather low Young's modulus (E  71 GPa). Concerning the corrosion performance, Ti–35Nb–7Zr–5Ta shows a corrosion behavior comparable to Ti–Al6–V4, with no potential breakdown up to 0.4 V vs. Ag|AgCl. On the contrary, the Ti–31.0Fe–9.0Sn alloy exhibits a more anodic corrosion potential, but the value is still less negative than for pure elemental Fe and Ti. From all these properties and because of the absence of toxic elements in the compositions, the Ti–39.3Nb–13.3Zr–10.7Ta and Ti–31.0Fe–9.0Sn alloys are attractive for use as metallic biomaterials.  相似文献
