The present study provides results on the influence of humic substance (HS) photoalteration on lead availability to the freshwater microalga Chlorella kesslerii . The evolution of the free lead-ion concentrations measured by the ion exchange technique [Pb](IET) and intracellular lead contents was explored in the presence of Suwannee River humic (SRHA) and fulvic (SRFA) acids, as well as Aldrich humic acid (AHA) exposed at increasing radiance doses under a solar simulator. Modifications of HS characteristics highly relevant to Pb complexation and accumulation of HS to algal surfaces, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, were followed. It was demonstrated that simulated sunlight exposure of HS increased [Pb](IET) in the medium for SRFA and SRHA, but had no effect for AHA. No clear relationship was observed between the changes in free lead-ion concentrations and intracellular content in alga for all studied HS, suggesting that HS photodegradation products also exhibit Pb complexation properties, and that direct interactions between HS and alga are affected. Indeed, photoalteration of humic substances reduced the adsorption of HS to the algal surface; the effect was more pronounced for SRFA and AHA and less significant for SRHA. The bioavailability results were consistent with the characterization of the phototransformation of humic substances: Pb speciation changes followed the modification of the relative abundance of the carboxylic groups and their molecular environment, while the reduced HS adsorption to the alga correlated with losses of the double bond abundance and aromaticity.  相似文献

Hydroxyl radical formation rates, steady-state concentration, and overall scavenging rate constant were measured by irradiation of surface lake water samples from Piedmont (NW Italy) and nitrate-rich groundwater samples from Moldova (NE Romania). Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was the main source and sink of *OH upon lake water irradiation, with [*OH] being independent of DOM amount. Water oxidation by photoexcited DOM is a likely *OH source in the presence of very low levels of nitrate and dissolved iron. Under different circumstances it is not possible to exclude other processes, e.g., DOM-enhanced photo-Fenton reactions. Under the hypotheses of no interaction and absence of mutual screening of radiation, nitrate would prevail over DOM as *OH source for a NO3-/DOM ratio higher than 3.3 x 10(-5) (mol NO3-) (mg C)(-1), DOM prevailing for lower values. Substantial DOM photolability was observed upon irradiation of nitrate-rich groundwater, mainly due to the elevated *OH generation rate. For the first time to our knowledge, evidence was also obtained of the photoformation of potentially toxic and/or mutagenic nitroaromatic compounds upon irradiation of natural lake water and groundwater samples, proportionally to the nitrate levels.  相似文献

The photo-Fenton reaction, the reaction of photoproduced Fe(II) with H2O2 to form the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (OH*), could be an important source of OH* in sunlit natural waters. To determine if the photo-Fenton reaction is significant in mildly acidic surface waters, we conducted experiments simulating conditions representative of natural freshwaters using solutions of standard fulvic acid and amorphous iron oxide at pH 6.0. A probe method measuring 14CO2 produced by the reaction of 14C-labeled formate with OH* was used to detect small OH* production rates without otherwise influencing the chemical reactions occurring in the experiments. Net H2O2 accumulation was simultaneously measured using an acridinium ester chemiluminescence method. Measured losses of H2O2 by reaction with Fe(II) in dark experiments produced approximately the expected quantities of OH*. The difference between H2O2 accumulation in the presence and absence of Fe(III) in fulvic acid solutions exposed to light was interpreted as the loss of H2O2 by reaction with photoproduced Fe(II), consistent with measured OH* production rates. The Fe ligand desferrioxamine mesylate eliminated both OH* production and H2O2 photoloss induced by Fe. Our results imply that when Fe is a major sink of H2O2, the photo-Fenton reaction is likely to be the most important source of OH*, leading to a significant sink of organic compounds in a wide variety of sunlit freshwaters.  相似文献

Pulse radiolysis experiments were conducted on dissolved organic matter (DOM) samples isolated as hydrophobic and hydrophilic acids and neutrals from different sources (i.e., stream, lake, wastewater treatment plant). Absolute bimolecular reaction rate constants for the reaction of hydroxyl radicals (*OH) with DOM (k*(OH), DOM) were determined. k*(OH, DOM) values are expressed as moles of carbon. Based on direct measurement of transient DOM radicals (DOM*) and competition kinetic techniques, both using pulse radiolysis, the k*(OH, DOM) value for a standard fulvic acid from the Suwannee River purchased from the International Humic Substances Society was (1.60 +/- 0.24) x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1). Both pulse radiolysis methods yielded comparable k*(OH, DOM) values. The k*(OH, DOM) values for the seven DOM isolates from different sources ranged from 1.39 x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1) to 4.53 x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1), and averaged 2.23 x 108 M(-1) s(-1) (equivalent to 1.9 x 10(4) (mgC/L)(-1) s(-1)). These values represent the first direct measurements of k*(OH, DOM,) and they compare well with literature values obtained via competition kinetic techniques during ozone or ultraviolet irradiation experiments. More polar, lower-molecular-weight DOM isolates from wastewater have higher k*(OH, DOM) values. In addition, the formation (microsecond time scale) and decay (millisecond time scale) of DOM* transients were observed for the first time. DOM* from hydrophobic acids exhibited broader absorbance spectra than transphilic acids, while wastewater DOM isolates had narrower DOM* spectra more skewed toward shorter wavelengths than did DOM* spectra for hydrophobic acids.  相似文献

Pathogens in sunlit surface waters can be damaged directly by UVB light. Indirect inactivation by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by sunlight interacting with external sensitizer molecules may also be important, but this mechanism has not been conclusively demonstrated. To better understand the role of ROS, we investigated the inactivation of MS2 coliphage, a commonly used surrogate for human enteric viruses, in water samples irradiated with a solar simulator and containing different types of sensitizers: waste stabilization pond (WSP) constituents, Fluka humic acid (FHA), and Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA). Inactivation of MS2 by the indirect mechanism was significant for all three sensitizers, and the efficiency of the sensitizers at inactivating MS2 was FHA > SRHA > WSP. Both dissolved and particulate fractions in the WSP water contributed to inactivation. In the WSP water, the indirect process was quantitatively more importantthan direct damage by UVB light, due to the rapid attenuation of UVB compared to the longer wavelengths that may initiate the indirect mechanism. Singlet oxygen (1O2) was the most important ROS involved in the inactivation of MS2. The addition of histidine, a 1O2 quencher, decreased inactivation, whereas inactivation rate constants increased in solutions of D20. Selective quenchers for other ROS showed little or no protective effect. Inactivation in WSP water was a function of the steady-state 102 concentration and could be described by a second-order rate expression.  相似文献

The photochemical reduction of Cr(VI) by iron and aquatic dissolved organic matter (DOM) was investigated. DOM sampled from a number of surface waters (a eutrophic wetland, a blackwater stream, and river water from a mix-use watershed) was used in this study. Moreover, a fulvic acid from Lake Fryxell, Antarctica, was also used to represent a DOM derived from a strictly autochthonous source. Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III) at pH 5.5 was observed for all target DOMs used in this study, but rates varied widely. In general, photoreduction rates increased with increasing iron concentrations, but the type of DOM appeared to influence the kinetics to a larger degree. The rate of reduction was significantly greater for DOM derived from terrestrial systems than from predominantly autochthonous materials even if additional iron was added to the later. A positive correlation was observed between rates of Cr(VI) photoreduction and properties of the isolated DOM samples whereby faster reduction was observed for larger more aromatic substrates. On the basis of the fast rates reported for the dark reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by Fe(II)-organic ligands, we hypothesize that the rate-limiting step in these reactions is the photoreduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) by a ligand-to-metal charge-transfer pathway after absorption of light by Fe(III)-DOM complexes or by reduction of Fe(III) by superoxide or other intermediates formed after light absorption by DOM. Thus, the rate of Cr(VI) photoreduction to Cr(III) in natural sunlit waters is dependent upon both the amount of iron present and the nature of the dissolved organic matter substrate.  相似文献

Elevated concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) such as humic substances in raw water pose significant challenges during the processing of the commercial drinking water supplies. This is a relevant issue in Saxony, Central East Germany, and many other regions worldwide, where drinking water is produced from raw waters with noticeable presence of chromophoric DOM (CDOM), which is assumed to originate from forested watersheds in spring regions of the catchment area. For improved comprehension of DOM molecular composition, the seasonal and spatial variations of humic-like fluorescence and elemental formulas in the catchment area of the Muldenberg reservoir were recorded by excitation emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). The Spearman rank correlation was applied to link the EEMF intensities with exact molecular formulas and their corresponding relative mass peak abundances. Thereby, humic-like fluorescence could be allocated to the pool of oxygen-rich and relatively unsaturated components with stoichiometries similar to those of tannic acids, which are suspected to have a comparatively high disinfection byproduct formation potential associated with the chlorination of raw water. Analogous relationships were established for UV absorption at 254 nm (UV(254)) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and compared to the EEMF correlation.  相似文献

Humic substances originated from aquatic, soil, or sediment environments are mixtures of humic compounds with various characteristics. Sorption interactions with isolated, well defined humic fractions can be studied either in an aqueous phase ("dissolved humic substances"), or in a solid-phase, by coating mineral particles with the humic materials, or simply by working with humic acid particles (powder) at low pH to minimize dissolution. Each attitude, by definition, can be studied by different experimental techniques and has a different meaning for understanding natural environmental processes. In this study, a new tool for studying sorption interactions is presented. Sol-gel was used as an inert matrix to immobilize (entrap) various humic acids (HAs), and then used to study the interactions of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with the entrapped HA. Linear and nonlinear sorption coefficients were highly correlated with contaminant hydrophobicity. Sorption of pyrene to immobilized HA was in the order of soil HA > Aldrich HA approximately = peat HA. It was concluded that the entrapped HAs retained their original properties in the gel matrix and were accessible to the external contaminant through the pore network. Additionally, binding coefficients of pyreneto dissolved humic substances and to dissolved organic matter (DOM) were determined from the reduction in pyrene sorption to immobilized HA in the presence of dissolved humic material or DOM in solution. Binding coefficients of pyrene were in the order of the following: dissolved Aldrich HA > dissolved peat fulvic acid (FA) > DOM derived from mature compost > DOM derived from fresh compost.  相似文献

A multivariate kinetic model of aqueous fipronil photodegradation was developed as a function of dissolved organic matter (DOM), bicarbonate, and nitrate at concentrations that bracketthose commonly observed in natural waters (ca. 0-10 mg/L). Several pathways were available for fipronil photodegradation in this system, including direct photolysis and indirect photooxidation by species produced during the illumination of natural waters (e.g., 3NOM*, 1O2*, *OH, *CO3(1-), *OOR, *OOH, e(aq)-, O2(*-)). Product studies indicated thatfipronil was quantitatively converted to fipronil desulfinyl, a product that is associated with direct photolysis alone. DOM was the only variable that affected fipronil degradation; it decreased the rate of fipronil photodegradation primarily through competitive light absorption (i.e., attenuation) and the quenching of fipronil*. The addition of sodium chloride (30 percent per thousand) resulted in a more rapid rate (approximately 20%) of fipronil loss in comparison to equivalent experiments performed without sodium chloride, implying that fipronil may be more photolabile in marine environments.  相似文献

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is generally thought to lower metal bioavailability in aquatic systems due to the formation of metal-DOM complexes that reduce free metal ion concentrations. However, this model may not be pertinent for metal nanoparticles, which are now understood to be ubiquitous, sometimes dominant, metal species in the environment. The influence of DOM on Hg bioavailability to microorganisms was examined under conditions (0.5-5.0 nM Hg and 2-10 μM sulfide) that favor the formation of β-HgS(s) (metacinnabar) nanoparticles. We used the methylation of stable-isotope enriched (201)HgCl(2) by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ND132 in short-term washed cell assays as a sensitive, environmentally significant proxy for Hg uptake. Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) and Williams Lake hydrophobic acid (WLHPoA) substantially enhanced (2- to 38-fold) the bioavailability of Hg to ND132 over a wide range of Hg/DOM ratios (9.4 pmol/mg DOM to 9.4 nmol/mg DOM), including environmentally relevant ratios. Methylmercury (MeHg) production by ND132 increased linearly with either SRHA or WLHPoA concentration, but SRHA, a terrestrially derived DOM, was far more effective at enhancing Hg-methylation than WLHPoA, an aquatic DOM dominated by autochthonous sources. No DOM-dependent enhancement in Hg methylation was observed in Hg-DOM-sulfide solutions amended with sufficient l-cysteine to prevent β-HgS(s) formation. We hypothesize that small HgS particles, stabilized against aggregation by DOM, are bioavailable to Hg-methylating bacteria. Our laboratory experiments provide a mechanism for the positive correlations between DOC and MeHg production observed in many aquatic sediments and wetland soils.  相似文献

Carbonate radical (CO3*-) is a powerful oxidant that is present in sunlit surface waters and in waters treated by advanced oxidation processes. The production of CO3*- in aqueous solution through oxidation of carbonate anion by excited triplet states of aromatic ketones was investigated in this study to provide new methods for the determination of rate constants and to explore a possible photoinduced pathway of CO3*- formation in the aquatic environment. Rate constants for triplet quenching by carbonate anion of up to 3.0 x 10(7) M(-1) s(-1) and CO3*- yields approaching unity, determined using laser flash photolysis, allowed us to conclude that such a formation mechanism might be significant in sulit natural waters. Kinetic methods based on either flash photolysis or steady-state irradiation and on the use of aromatic ketones as photosensitizers gave bimolecular rate constants in the range of 4 x 10(6) to 1 x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1) for the reaction of CO3*- with several s-triazine and phenylurea herbicides. For various anilines and phenoxide anions, rate constants determined by these methods agreed well with published values. Moreover, it could be shown for the first time by a direct method that dissolved natural organic matter (DOM) reduces the lifetime of CO3*- and a second-order rate constant of (280 +/- 90) (mg of C/L)(-1) s(-1) was obtained for Suwannee River fulvic acid.  相似文献

Photochemical reactions involving aqueous Fe(III) complexes are known to generate free radical species such as OH* that are capable of oxidizing numerous inorganic and organic compounds. Recent work has shown that As(III) can be oxidized to As(V) via photochemical reactions in ferric-citrate solutions; however, the mechanisms of As(III) oxidation and the potential importance of photochemical oxidation in natural waters are poorly understood. Consequently, the objectives of this study were to evaluate oxidation rates of As(III) in irradiated ferrioxalate solutions as a function of pH, identify mechanisms of photochemical As(III) oxidation, and evaluate the oxidation of As(III) in a representative natural water containing dissolved organic C (DOC). The oxidation of As(III) was studied in irradiated ferrioxalate solutions as a function of pH (3-7), As(III), Fe(III), and 2-propanol concentration. Rates of As(III) oxidation (0.5-254 microM h(-1)) were first-order in As(III) and Fe(III) concentration and increased with decreasing pH. Experiments conducted at pH 5.0 using 2-propanol as an OH* scavenger in light and dark reactions suggested that OH* is the important free radical responsible for As(III) oxidation. Significant rates of As(III) oxidation (4-6 microM h(-1)) were also observed in a natural water sample containing DOC, indicating that photochemical oxidation of As(III) may contribute to arsenic (As) cycling in natural waters.  相似文献

The origin of dissolved organic matter (DOM) within sea ice in coastal waters of the Baltic Sea was investigated using parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis of DOM fluorescence. Sea ice DOM had distinctly different fluorescence characteristics than that of the underlying humic-rich waters and was dominated by protein-like fluorescence signals. PARAFAC analysis identified five fluorescent components, all of which were present in both sea ice and water. Three humic components were negatively correlated to salinity and concluded to be terrestrially derived material. Baltic Sea ice DOM was found to be a mixture of humic material from the underlying water column incorporated during ice formation and autochthonous material produced by organisms within the ice. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) concentrations were correlated to the humic fluorescence, indicating that the majority of the organic carbon and nitrogen in Baltic Sea ice is bound in terrestrial humic material trapped within the ice. This has implications for our understanding of sea ice carbon cycling in regions influenced by riverine input (e.g., Baltic and Arctic coastal waters), as the susceptibility of DOM to degradation and remineralization is largely determined by its source.  相似文献

In coastal areas, strong complexation of copper generally reduces its toxicity; our ability to monitor and regulate copper as a toxin therefore depends on our understanding of the sources and sinks of the copper-binding ligands. Terrestrial humic substances (HS) are well-recognized contributors to weak ligand concentrations in aquatic systems. In this work, we show that HS are likely contributors to both stronger and weaker ligand classes controlling copper speciation in coastal areas receiving typical inputs of terrestrial organic matter. We used competitive ligand exchange adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-ACSV), with the added ligands benzoylacetone and salicylaldoxime, to examine copper binding by terrestrial HS in a seawater matrix, at HS and copper concentrations typical of coastal waters. Copper titration data of 1 mg/L Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) in seawater could be modeled using conditional stability constants of 10(12.0) and 10(10.0) and total ligand concentrations of 10.4 and 199 nM for a stronger and weaker ligand, respectively. Similar results were obtained for Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA). Strong copper binding by SRFA in seawater was weaker than previously reported for a freshwater at similar pH, possibly indicating effects of Ca and Mg competition or ionic strength. Nevertheless, the concentrations and binding strengths of copper ligands we observed are comparable to the range reported in previous coastal speciation studies. In addition, we show that the weaker copper ligands cause internal calibration techniques to significantly underestimate the sensitivity of ACSV in the presence of HS concentrations typical of coastal waters. To address this issue, we demonstrate the use of "overload titrations", using a high enough concentration of added ligand to outcompete all natural ligands as an alternative calibration technique for analysis of coastal samples.  相似文献

Metal speciation in aquatic systems is mainly determined by the type and concentration of ligands present in solution. A very important group of complexing agents is dissolved organic matter (DOM), e.g., humic and fulvic acids. According to the free-ion activity model, only the free metal ion is available to biota. Nevertheless, DOM has been reported to decrease or increase metal uptake, leading to uncertainty concerning the bioavailability of metal-DOM complexes. In this work the effect of Aldrich humic acid on cadmium accumulation by the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, was studied under laboratory conditions. Mussels, collected in a drinking water reservoir, were exposed to varying environmentally relevant concentrations of cadmium in the presence and absence of humic acid. Cadmium concentrations in the mussel tissues were analyzed, and measurements with a cadmium-ion-selective electrode were made to determine the free cadmium ion activity in the exposure waters. The uptake of humic acid by the zebra mussels was measured by the decrease of the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration in the water over time. The free cadmium ion activity in the water decreased from 51.6% to 19.9% of the total cadmium concentration in the presence of humic acid. This decrease by a factor of 2.6 resulted in a decrease in the cadmium uptake rate in the soft tissue of zebra mussels from 12.9 to 7.9 nmol/g dry wt/day, which corresponds to a decrease by a factor of 1.6. This implies that cadmium uptake rates were higher than predicted by the free-ion activity model and indicates that cadmium-humic acid complexes are partly available to zebra mussels.  相似文献

Humic substances typically constitute 40-60% of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters. However, little information is available regarding the metal binding properties of the nonhumic hydrophilic portion of the DOM. In this study, humic and nonhumic DOM samples were isolated from the South Platte River (Colorado, DOC = 2.6 mg x L(-1), SUVA254 = 2.4 L/mg x m) using a two-column array of XAD-8 and XAD-4 resins. The three major isolated fractions of DOM, which accounted for 57% of the bulk DOM,were characterized using a variety of analytical tools. Proton and copper binding properties were studied for each fraction. The main objective of this work was to compare the structural and chemical characteristics of the isolated fractions and test models describing DOM reactivity toward metal ions. The characterization work showed significant structural differences between the three isolated fractions of DOM. The hydrophobic acid fraction (i.e., humic substances isolated from the XAD-8 resin) gave the largest C/H, C/O, and C/N ratios and aromatic carbon content among the three isolated fractions. The transphilic acid (TPHA) fraction ("transphilic" meaning fraction of intermediate polarity isolated from the XAD-4 resin) was found to incorporate the highest proportion of polysaccharides, whereas the transphilic neutral (TPHN) fraction was almost entirely proteinaceous. The gradual increase of the charge with pH for the three DOM fractions is most likely caused by a large distribution of proton affinity constants for the carboxylic groups, as well as a second type of group more generally considered to be phenolic. In the case of the DOM fraction enriched in proteinaceous material (i.e., TPHN fraction), the results showed that the amino groups are responsible for the charge reversal. For low copper concentrations, nitrogen-containing functional groups similar to those of amino acids are likely to be involved in complexation, in agreement with previously published data.  相似文献

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters affects the fate and environmental effects of trace metals. We measured variability in the Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn affinity of 23 DOM samples isolated by reverse osmosis from freshwaters in natural, agricultural, and urban areas. Affinities at uniform pH and ionic composition were assayed at low, environmentally relevant free Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn activities. The C-normalized metal binding of DOM varied 4-fold (Cu) or about 10-fold (Cd, Ni, Zn) among samples. The dissolved organic carbon concentration ranged only 9-fold in the waters, illustrating that DOM quality is an equally important parameter for metal complexation as DOM quantity. The UV-absorbance of DOM explained metal affinity only for waters receiving few urban inputs, indicating that in those waters, aromatic humic substances are the dominant metal chelators. Larger metal affinities were found for DOM from waters with urban inputs. Aminopolycarboxylate ligands (mainly EDTA) were detected at concentrations up to 0.14 μM and partly explained the larger metal affinity. Nickel concentrations in these surface waters are strongly related to EDTA concentrations (R2=0.96) and this is underpinned by speciation calculations. It is concluded that metal complexation in waters with anthropogenic discharges is larger than that estimated with models that only take into account binding on humic substances.  相似文献

Aqueous photochemical reaction kinetics and transformations of fluoxetine   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Fluoxetine (FLX) was shown to be photoreactive in sunlit surface waters. FLX degraded in deionized water when exposed to simulated sunlight with a half-life of 55.2+/-3.6 h(-1). Photodegradation products were identified using high performance liquid chromatography-UV (HPLC-UV) and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) using electrospray (ES) ionization. Defluorination of the trifluoromethyl group in FLX and in fluometuron and flutalanil, two other compounds containing this functional group, is suggested to be a common direct photolysis pathway for trifluoromethylated compounds. Products resulting from O-dealkylation of FLX were also observed. The rate of degradation was faster in synthetic field water where .OH was the likely dominant oxidant in the system. The bimolecular rate constant for the reaction between FLX and .OH was measured as (8.4+/-0.5) x 10(9) and (9.6 +/-0.8) x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) using two different methods of competition kinetics. Indirect photodegradation reactions could lead to the production of hydroxylated and O-dealkylated compounds. Although direct photolysis could potentially limitthe persistence of FLX in surface waters, its degradation by indirect photolysis would proceed faster. Thus, this latter process could be important in the elimination of FLX in surface waters.  相似文献

This study presents a new experimental technique for measuring rates of desorption of organic compounds from dissolved organic matter (DOM) such as humic substances. The method is based on a fast solid-phase extraction of the freely dissolved fraction of a solute when the solution is flushed through a polymer-coated capillary. The extraction interferes with the solute-DOM sorption equilibrium and drives the desorption process. Solutes which remain sorbed to DOM pass through the extraction capillary and can be analyzed afterward. This technique allows a time resolution for the desorption kinetics from subseconds up to minutes. It is applicable to the study of interaction kinetics between a wide variety of hydrophobic solutes and polyelectrolytes. Due to its simplicity it is accessible for many environmental laboratories. The time-resolved in-tube solid-phase microextraction (TR-IT-SPME) was applied to two humic acids and a surfactant as sorbents together with pyrene, phenanthrene and 1,2-dimethylcyclohexane as solutes. The results give evidence for a two-phase desorption kinetics: a fast desorption step with a half-life of less than 1 s and a slow desorption step with a half-life of more than 1 min. For aliphatic solutes, the fast-desorbing fraction largely dominates, whereas for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as pyrene, the slowly desorbing, stronger-bound fraction is also important.  相似文献

The fate of arsenic in the aquatic environment is influenced by dissolved natural organic matter (DOM). Using an equilibrium dialysis method, conditional distribution coefficients (Dom) for As(III) and As(V) binding onto two commercial humic acids were determined at environmentally relevant As/dissolved organic carbon (DOC) ratios and as a function of pH. At all pH values, As(V) was more strongly bound than As(III). Maximum binding was observed around pH 7, which is consistent with H+ competition for binding sites at low pH values and OH- competition for the arsenic center at high pH. For both oxidation states, Dom values increased with decreasing As/DOC ratios. Dom values were fitted as a function of the As/DOC ratio for As(III) and As(V). Compared to the aquatic humic acid, the terrestrial humic acid had a higher affinity for arsenic binding with 1.5-3 times higher Dom values under the same conditions. Al3+ in excess to arsenic successfully competed for strong binding sites at low As/DOC ratios. Under environmentally relevant conditions, about 10% of total As(V) may be bound to DOM, whereas >10% of As(III) is bound to DOM at very low As/DOC ratios only. Binding of arsenic to DOM should be considered in natural systems.  相似文献
