In today’s world, construction projects require the collaboration of several parties who work independently for a shared purpose, sometimes across space and time, and most of the time across organizational boundaries. Working with a wide diversity of knowledge and skills brings a broad range of viewpoints and expertise to the construction projects. In design and construction, organizations depend on information technology to execute their specific well-defined tasks to make construction projects possible. Technology is used either for executing these tasks more efficiently, or for doing things that were not possible before. Nevertheless, despite the potential positive contribution of these tools to the design and construction processes and organizations, barriers still exist for achieving success. This paper presents potential benefits of technology enabled and open project team collaboration with a case study example and outlines cultural and legal barriers to its widespread adoption by the construction industry. 相似文献

Although some new technologies promise to improve construction productivity, their ability to deliver is not always realized. Building on a great deal of prior research, a four-stage predictive model was developed and validated to estimate the potential for a technology to have a positive impact on construction productivity. The four stages examine the costs, feasibility, usage history, and technical impact of a technology. The predictive model combines results from historical analyses to formalize how selected technologies with improved construction productivity can be used as a predictor of how future technologies might do the same. Each of the stages of a predictive model was subdivided into a series of categories and questions, which were weighted by importance by using the analytic hierarchy process and historical analysis to generate a performance score for the analyzed technology. The predictive model was then validated by using 74 previous and existing construction technologies. Statistical analysis confirmed that average performance scores produced by the model were significantly different across the categories of successful, inconclusive, and unsuccessful in the actual implementation experience of technologies. 相似文献

Life-cycle management (LCM) has been employed in the management of construction projects for many years in order to reduce whole life cost, time, risk and improve the service to owners. However, owing to lack of an effective information sharing platform, the current LCM of construction projects is not effectively used in the construction industry. Based upon the analysis of the information flow of LCM, a virtual prototyping (VP)-based communication and collaboration information platform is proposed. Following this, the platform is customized using DASSAULT software. The whole process of implementing the VP-based LCM of projects is analyzed via the application to a real-life construction project. The advantages of implementing a VP-based LCM are also discussed and, from a simple case study, it is demonstrated that the VP-based communication and collaboration information platform is an effective tool to support the LCM of construction projects. 相似文献
