Body condition score (BCS) change is an indirect measure of energy balance. Energy balance before calving may affect production and health in the following lactation. It is likely that cows may experience BCS loss before calving due to negative energy balance. The objective of this study was to determine if loss of BCS 15 d before calving affected milk production, BCS profile, and metabolic status during the transition period and early lactation. On d ?15 to d 0 relative to calving, BCS was assessed (1 = emaciated, 5 = obese) for 98 Holstein-Friesian cows. The cows were divided into 2 groups: those that did not lose BCS between d ?15 and d 0 (maintained, BCS-M, n = 55) and those that lost BCS from d ?15 to d 0 (lost, BCS-L, n = 43, average loss of 0.29 ± 0.11 BCS). The fixed effects of BCS group, parity, week (day when analyzing milk production records), their interactions, and a random effect of cow were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). Before calving, BCS-L cows tended to have higher concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids than BCS-M cows (0.88 vs. 0.78 mmol/L). After calving, BCS-L cows had higher nonesterified fatty acid concentrations in wk 1 (0.93 vs. 0.71 mmol/L), wk 2 (0.84 vs. 0.69 mmol/L), and wk 4 (0.81 vs. 0.63 mmol/L) than BCS-M cows. The BCS-L cows had higher concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in wk 1 (0.72 vs. 0.57 mmol/L), wk 2 (0.97 vs. 0.70 mmol/L), and wk 4 (0.94 vs. 0.67 mmol/L) compared with BCS-M cows. We detected significant reductions in insulin concentrations in BCS-L cows from wk ?1 (2.23 vs. 1.37 µIU/mL) to wk 2 (1.68 vs. 0.89 µIU/mL) and wk 4 (2.21 vs 1.59 µIU/mL) compared with BCS-M cows. Prevalence of subclinical ketosis increased in BCS-L cows in wk 3 and 4 when BHB was ≥1.4 mmol/L and in wk 1, 3, and 4 when BHB was ≥1.2 mmol/L. In wk 1, BCS-L cows tended to have lower levels of calcium than BCS-M cows (2.33 vs. 2.27 mmol/L). We found no differences between the groups of cows for milk yield and energy-corrected milk. The BCS-L cows had lower BCS up to 75 d in lactation. Overall, BCS-L cows had higher somatic cell scores with an elevated somatic cell score on d 45, d 60, and d 75. There was an overall tendency for BCS-L cows to have higher fat yield and an overall significant increase in fat percentage. Overall, BCS-L cows had lower lactose percentage, with a reduction on d 60. This work shows that BCS loss before calving may have significant consequences for metabolic status, milk composition, somatic cell score, and BCS profile in dairy cows.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of milking frequency (MF) at 2 feeding levels (FL) on milk production, body condition score, and metabolic indicators of energy status in grazing dairy cows during early lactation. Multiparous Holstein-Friesian and Holstein-Friesian × Jersey cows (n = 120) grazed pasture and were milked twice daily (2×) from calving until 34 ± 6 d in milk (mean ± standard deviation). Cows were then allocated to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Treatments consisted of 2 FL: adequately fed [AF; 14.3 kg dry matter intake (DMI)/cow per d] or underfed (UF; 8.3 kg of DMI/cow per d) and 2 MF: 2× or once daily (1×). Treatments were imposed for 3 wk. After the treatment period, all cows were offered a generous pasture allowance (grazing residuals >1,600 kg of dry matter/ha) and milked 2×. During the 3-wk treatment period, we observed an interaction between FL and MF for energy-corrected milk (ECM), such that the decrease due to 1× milking was greater in AF than in UF cows (20 and 14% decrease, respectively). No interactions were found posttreatment. Cows previously UF produced 7% less ECM than AF cows during wk 4 to 12; however, no subsequent effect was observed of the previous underfeeding. Cows previously milked 1× produced 5% less ECM during wk 4 to 12, and differences remained during wk 13 to 23. During the 3-wk treatment period, UF cows lost 0.2 body condition score units (1–10 scale) and this was not affected by 1× milking. During the treatment period, UF cows had lower plasma glucose, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor I, and greater nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations than AF cows. Cows milked 1× had greater plasma glucose, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor I, and lower nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations compared with cows milked 2×. In conclusion, energy status was improved by 1× milking; however, when UF cows were milked 1×, milk production was reduced by more than underfeeding alone. The immediate and residual responses to 1× milking need to be considered when using this management strategy during a feed deficit.  相似文献

To investigate the immediate and long-term performance effects of milking frequency during early lactation of primiparous dairy cows consuming a total mixed ration and pasture, 20 Holstein cows were assigned in a randomized block design to either once-daily (1×) or twice-daily (2×) milking during the first 8 wk of lactation (treatment period). After the treatment period, all cows were milked 2× until wk 43 of lactation. Cows were fed a total mixed ration (approximately 15 kg of DM/cow per day) and allowed to graze an oat pasture (Avena sativa). Dry matter intake was 19.1 kg of DM/cow per day on average and was not affected by treatments. Milk yield was 40% lower in cows milked 1× during the treatment period, and a carryover effect existed until wk 21 of lactation, resulting in a final reduction of 15% of milk yield in the whole lactation. Milk lactose concentration decreased, whereas fat and protein concentrations increased for cows milked 1×. Mobilization of energy reserves during the treatment period occurred in both groups, but cows milked 1× showed greater body condition score and greater backfat thickness. In conclusion, milking 1× during the first 8 wk of lactation resulted in immediate and carryover negative effects on milk and milk solid yield without affecting feed intake, resulting in the improved energy status of primiparous dairy cows.  相似文献

Increasing milking frequency (MF) increases milk yield (MY) and farm profit, and optimal milking intervals (MI) prevent milk production decline. The objective of this experiment was to compare the MY effect of even and uneven 4 times daily (4×) MI in early lactation under increased MF. Fourteen multiparous and 6 primiparous cows were milked using unilateral frequent milking, with right udder halves milked 4× and left udder halves milked 2 times daily (2×) for 20 d in early lactation starting on d 5 postpartum. Ten (7 multiparous and 3 primiparous) cows were allocated evenly based on parity and assigned to either the even or the uneven MI groups distinguished by intervals of 9:3:9:3 h or 6:6:6:6 h. The left and right udder halves were milked at 0100 and 1300 h. The right udder glands were additionally milked at 0400 and 1600 h for the uneven MI group and at 0700 and 1900 h for the even MI group. Milk from each udder half was weighed and sampled for components on the final day of treatment and at 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 d in milk. The overall effect of 4× milking on the right udder halves was a 5.96 ± 0.70 kg/d increase in MY on d 21 of unilateral frequent milking compared with the 2× udder halves. This elevated MY continued through 300 d in milk and averaged 1.56 ± 0.70 kg/d. Increased MF in early lactation increased the udder half difference in total yield throughout a 300-d lactation by 508 kg for milk, 25 kg for milk fat, and 15 kg for milk protein. Increased MF in early lactation increased milk component yields, but there were no differences between MI groups. The lack of treatment difference may be beneficial to farmers. The ability to achieve the same increased MY effect with uneven MI may optimize labor efficiency because early-lactation cows could be milked at the beginning and end of milking sessions. Farmers would not have to add additional milking sessions to achieve the enhanced MY response regardless of normal milking session length.  相似文献

We determined whether milk secretion in beef cows could be reinitiated by renewed suckling after a hiatus from milking or suckling. Fifty-three Angus x Hereford cows were suckled ad libitum by their own calves for 13 to 18 d postpartum and then assigned to treatments for 4 wk in which cows were 1) neither milked nor suckled (weaned; n = 18), 2) milked 2 x daily (milked; n = 18), or 3) suckled by their own calves (suckled; n = 17). Thereafter, all calves (including earlier weaned calves) suckled their own dams until permanent weaning at 203 d of age, except when their dams were milked once after receiving (i.m.) 40 IU of oxytocin at reinitiation of suckling (0 wk) and again 1 and 5 wk later. Prolactin was increased in milked and suckled cows during 20 min after milking or suckling at the termination of treatments (0 wk). Concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I were greater for weaned than suckled cows; milked cows had intermediate concentrations. At 0 wk, milk yield was greater for suckled than milked or weaned treatment cows. After 1 wk of renewed suckling, milk secretion of weaned treatment cows increased, and by 5 wk, composition of milk was normal, but yield was still reduced. We concluded that milk secretion was renewed by suckling in early postpartum cows after they were neither suckled nor milked for 4 wk.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of diet energy density and milking frequency on mammary cell turnover and synthetic capacity in dairy cows. Experiment 1 used 20 dairy cows. From d 4 to wk 16 postpartum, the cows were fed either a low-energy density or a high-energy density diet. From d 4 through wk 8, half of the cows in each group were milked 3 times (3x) or 2 times (2x) daily. From wk 9 to 16, all cows were milked 2 times daily. Mammary biopsies were obtained at wk 8 and 16 postpartum. In experiment 2, udders of 18 individual cows were milked diagonally 2x and 4x, and biopsies were obtained after 7 d. In experiment 1, cows on the low-energy density diet yielded 17 and 24% less milk during wk 3 to 8 and wk 11 to 16 postpartum, respectively. Furthermore, at 8 wk postpartum, mammary enzyme activities tended to be lower and mammary cell proliferation was lower in cows on the low-energy density diet. Three times daily milking during the first 8 wk postpartum resulted in 11% higher milk yield. Mammary cell turnover or enzyme activities were not significantly affected at 8 wk. The 3x milking for 8 wk resulted only in a transient carryover effect on milk yield and neither cell turnover nor enzyme activities were significantly affected at 16 wk postpartum. In experiment 2, mammary cell turnover and enzyme activity were unaffected after 7 d of 4x milking although milk yield increased by 18%. We conclude that nutrient restriction affects mammary cell turnover and possible enzyme activity, and that tuning of negative feedback loops in response to filling of the gland may be the dominating effects of changes in milking frequency.  相似文献

Our objectives were to determine lactational and reproductive outcomes in response to increased milking frequency (MF), injection of estradiol cypionate (ECP), and treatment with bovine somatotropin (bST). Lactating dairy cows (n = 144) were blocked by lactation number (1 vs. 2+) and assigned randomly to a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial experiment consisting of 8 treatment combinations: 1) MF consisting of 4× daily milking (4×) for the first 30 d in milk (DIM) vs. 2× daily milking (2×), with all cows milked 2× after 30 DIM; 2) 10 mg of ECP given postpartum at 8 ± 3 DIM versus controls that received ECP diluent (oil); and 3) biweekly bovine somatotropin (bST), starting sometime after 60 DIM, versus no bST. Ovulation before the first artificial insemination was synchronized by using Heatsynch (GnRH injection 7 d before PGF2α followed in 24 h by ECP), and cows were artificially inseminated after detected estrus or at 48 h after ECP, whichever came first. Pregnancy was assessed by transrectal ultrasonography 28 to 30 d after artificial insemination. Daily yield and weekly components of milk were measured during the first 90 DIM. Intervals to first and second postpartum ovulation were unaffected by treatment, but cows were in estrus earlier after 2× (24 ± 4 d) than 4× (41 ± 4 d) daily MF, and sooner after ECP (25 ± 3 d) than after oil (39 ± 4 d) treatment. Pregnancy rates among 4× cows increased for ECP versus oil (52.8 vs. 27.8%) more than for cows with 2× MF treated with ECP versus oil (50.0 vs. 39.4%). Increased MF increased daily milk yields and energy-corrected milk yields during the first 30 DIM. Although milk yields were increased acutely by ECP during the 10 d after its injection, subsequent milk yields were decreased for ECP-treated cows previously milked 4× daily. Treatment with bST increased overall daily milk yields most in cows previously milked 2× daily and treated with oil and those milked 4× daily and treated with ECP. We concluded that early postpartum ECP injection increased pregnancy rates, but generally had detrimental effects on milk yields after 30 DIM for ECP-treated cows previously milked 4× daily, unless those cows also were treated with bST.  相似文献

Four ruminally cannulated cows in first lactation (50 days postpartum) were assigned randomly to a 4 × 4 Latin square with the following feeding frequencies of the same total mixed ration: one, two, four, and eight times a day. Dry matter intake, water consumption, and ruminal pH were recorded hourly during 4-d collection (10-d adaptation between periods, Experiment 1). In Experiment 2, 30 animals were blocked by milk production on wk 4 postpartum and assigned to feeding one or four times a day through wk 19 postpartum. Individual feed consumption and milk production were recorded daily.Hourly consumption patterns of dry matter and water were variable over 24 h; once daily feeding tended to be more variable than other frequencies. Cows fed four times a day had higher ruminal liquid dilution rates than those fed eight times; feeding once and twice a day was not different from either. In Experiment 2, frequency of feeding total mixed ration had no significant influence on dry matter intake or milk yield; however, cows fed four times a day exhibited a consistent weekly tendency to be lower in dry matter intake and higher in milk yield than those fed once daily. Efficiency of fat-corrected milk production was slightly higher for cows fed four times than for those fed once daily.  相似文献

To investigate the relationship between metabolic status and the acute phase proteins haptoglobin (Hp) and lactoferrin (Lf) in milk, the concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and Hp were determined in blood samples collected weekly from 4 wk prepartum until 12 wk postpartum. Haptoglobin and Lf were determined in weekly milk samples. The cows (n = 49) were retrospectively classified according to NEFA and BHBA concentrations using different time intervals and threshold values for NEFA and BHBA, respectively. For BHBA, 4 threshold concentrations, (0.8, 1.0, 1.2, and 1.6 mM) were evaluated either at the first week before calving, at wk 1 or 2 postpartum, or when considering the means of wk 2 and 3 postpartum. For NEFA, the tested thresholds were 0.5 and 0.6 mM at wk 1 prepartum, wk 1 or 2 postpartum, or the means of wk 1 and 2 postpartum. All variables showed changes during the interval of observation. Comparing the time course of the acute phase proteins in the subgroups classified according to BHBA or NEFA, consistently greater concentrations of Hp in serum and milk and of Lf in milk were observed in those animals with BHBA concentrations above 1.6 mM during the last week before calving (n = 3/47) than in those with BHBA concentrations below this threshold. For NEFA, analogous differences for Hp in both serum and milk (0.52 ± 0.07 and 18.1 ± 4.6 for NEFA >0.6 mM vs. 0.36 ± 0.04 mg/mL and 8.46 ± 1.63 &micro;g/mL for NEFA <0.6 mM, respectively) and for Lf in milk (130 ± 8.5 vs. 89.2 ± 7.1 &micro;g/mL, respectively) were detected when a threshold of 0.6 mM at wk 2 postpartum was used. Our results indicated that cows having BHBA and NEFA serum concentrations above these thresholds at defined times could be identified.  相似文献

The objective was to compare the effects of 3 management systems in high-yielding dairy cows on metabolic profiles and milk production. Thirty-six multiparous Brown Swiss cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups (n = 12 cows/group): the control (C) group, in which cows were dried off 56 d before calving and milked twice daily throughout next lactation (305 d); the once daily milking (ODM) group, in which cows were dried off 56 d before calving and milked once daily for the first 4 wk of lactation and twice daily for the remaining lactation; and the continuous milking (CM) group, in which cows were milked twice daily until calving and also during the subsequent lactation. Serum glucose concentrations decreased between wk 1 and 4 exclusively in C cows. Serum concentrations of NEFA and BHBA in the first 4 wk of lactation were highest in C cows compared with ODM and CM cows. Decreased backfat thickness during early lactation and reduction of body condition score were markedly more pronounced in C cows compared with ODM and CM cows. Mean lactational milk yield of C cows [11,310 ± 601 kg of energy-corrected milk (ECM)/305 d] was approximately 16% higher compared with ODM cows (9,531 ± 477 kg of ECM/305 d) and CM cows (9,447 ± 310 kg of ECM/305 d). The lactation curve of CM cows compared with C cows was characterized by a similar time of peak yield (wk 3), a reduced peak yield, and no obvious differences in persistency. Mean percentage of milk protein was significantly higher for CM cows (3.91%) compared with C cows (3.52%). In contrast, once daily milking was accompanied by a reduced and significantly delayed peak yield (wk 8) compared with the control treatment, whereas persistency was better and milk protein (3.79%) was higher in ODM cows than in C cows. In conclusion, continuous milking and once daily milking, targeting the interval before or after calving, respectively, substantially reduced the metabolic challenge of fresh cows and improved milk protein percentage. Continuous milking and once daily milking increased milk protein percentage markedly; furthermore, once daily milking during the first 4 wk of lactation improved the lactation curve.  相似文献

Increased milking frequency (IMF) at the beginning of lactation has been shown to increase milk yield not only during IMF but also after its cessation. The objectives of this experiment evaluated the effects of increased milking frequency initiated during early lactation on mammary growth and effects on milk yield (MY). Thirty-one cows were divided into treatment groups: 1) 2X: cows milked twice daily (2X) beginning at parturition (d 1), 2) IMF1: cows milked four times daily (4X) from d 1 to 21 postpartum (PP) and 3) IMF4: cows milked 2X d 1 to 3 and 4X d 4 to 21 PP. The 4X cows were milked immediately before 2X cows and again approximately 3 h later, at the end of the normal milking routine. All cows were milked 2X from d 21 to 305 postpartum. Milk yields were 34.5, 37.8 and 37.6 kg/d during wk 1 to 44 for 2X, IMF1 and IMF4, respectively. Mammary biopsies from four cows per treatment were obtained on d 7 and 14 PP to evaluate mammary cell proliferation. Tritiated-thymidine incorporation tended to increase on d 7 in IMF1 cows, and arithmetic means of the percentage of cells expressing Ki-67 proliferation antigen were consistent with a proliferative response to IMF though not significant. Blood was sampled three times per wk during the first 2 wk and then once per wk during wk 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Plasma insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) averaged 20.1 ng/ml in IMF cows vs. 24.2 in 2X but was not accompanied by a change in bST. Prolactin was also not affected by treatment. Neither milk yield nor potential effects on mammary cell proliferation were correlated with systemic IGF-1. Implementing an IMF routine increases MY during treatment and elicits a carryover effect on the remainder of lactation. Milk yield responses after an IMF routine may be the result of increased mammary cell proliferation.  相似文献

Effects on total lactation performance of varying ration crude protein (15.3 vs. 13.6% of dry matter) and nitrogen solubility (35 vs. 45% of total nitrogen) in early lactation was studied using 57 pluriparous Holstein cows. Grain was fed according to production so as to minimize change in body weight throughout lactation. Forages high in nitrogen solubility, corn and grass silages, were fed free-choice. Percent concentrate in ration dry matter was highest (64%) 5 to 8 wk postpartum and lowest (3%) 33 to 44 wk postpartum. Protein and nitrogen solubility were varied by formulating four protein supplements fed as 10% of the grain allocation, so differences in treatments applied narrowed as lactation progressed. Cows fed the medium-protein diets produced 196 kg more milk than those receiving low-protein diets, but their peak daily milk yield was only .6 kg higher. Cows receiving rations with reduced nitrogen solubility produced 347 kg more milk than those fed the higher solubility diets, but their peak daily milk yield was 1.0 kg lower. Income above fed cost for the lactation was highest and postpartum loss in body weight was least for cows receiving medium-protein and low-solubility rations in early lactation, but no differences were significant. Both milk yield (38.3 to 40.6 kg) and total dry matter intake (3.74 to 3.91% body weight) means were maximum 6 to 7 wk postpartum, but lactation performance was not proportional to peak milk yield. When cows are fed to minimize body fat mobilization, response to increased protein in the diet is small. Reducing nitrogen solubility of silage-based diets increased milk produced per unit grain fed. There were no adverse effects of treatments on breeding efficiency or herd health.  相似文献

A budgeting procedure using a micro-computer spreadsheet was used to compare the income over feed and variable costs of cows milked thrice and twice daily. Various percentage increases in milk yield, production per cow, milk and feed prices, and labor requirements were tested. With low feed prices, a 50% increase in labor requirements, and $12/ 45.4 kg milk, a 15.7% increase in milk yield was required for a herd producing 7727 kg milk per cow/yr for the income over feed and variable costs of thrice daily milking to equal that of twice daily milking. The percentage increases required for income over feed and variable costs of thrice daily milking to equal that of twice daily milking were lowered with a decreased labor requirement, lowered feed prices, and increased herd production. Small breeds required a larger increase in production from thrice daily milking to be as profitable as twice daily milking.  相似文献

A field study using seven Holstein herds was conducted to determine effects of prepartum milking on milk production, health disorders, and reproductive performance. In each herd, 80 cows (30% first lactation cows) were assigned 1 mo prior to expected calving date to one of two treatments: postpartum or prepartum milking. The group milked prepartum was machine-milked twice daily at regular milking intervals beginning 14 d prior to date of expected calving. The group milked postpartum was milked for the first time after calving. The day prior to calving, 36, 33, and 31% of the cows milked prepartum produced less than 4.5 kg, 4.5 to 9 kg, and greater than 9 kg of milk, respectively. No relationship existed between days milked prepartum and prepartum milk yield. Lactation milk yield and persistency were not affected by prepartum milking. Prepartum milking reduced incidence of milk fever and mastitis during the 1st mo after parturition. Treatment was not a significant source of variation for reproductive performance or body condition; however, culling was higher for cows milked postpartum. Results indicate no adverse effects on cow performance due to prepartum milking nor increase in lactation milk yield.  相似文献

Three milking frequency treatments were compared: twice daily milking; thrice daily milking until milk dropped below 24 kg; thrice daily milking until milk dropped below 31 kg. Three time milking was at least 45 days but no more than 150 days. Cows (12 to 14 per group) were managed alike except for milking frequency. In early lactation, increased milking had little effect. With time the superiority in yields increased such that cows on three times for 150 days were outproducing two time cows by 20%. Cumulative milk yields were greater for the thrice groups than for the twice group by 5% at 56 days, 11 and 8% at 154 days, 11 and 9% at 182 days, and 10% at 280 days. Fat percentage, adjusted for previous lactation fat percentage, averaged .2 to .3% lower for the cows milked three times until 24 kig but only .1% lower for cows milked thrice until 31 kg. Increased yield was primarily from prolonged peak yield and less subsequent decline. Switching from three to two milkings decreased yield 6 to 8% in the 1st wk. However, three time milking had a positive carryover, apparently due to higher starting yield at the point at which they were switched.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to test the effectiveness of different footbathing frequencies using CuSO4 in the control of digital dermatitis (DD) in groups of dairy cows with low and high DD prevalence in an endemically infected herd. During the study, groups of cows walked through allocated footbath solutions after milking on 4 consecutive milkings each week, 2 wk, or monthly, depending on treatment. The footbath solutions were changed either after 200 cows had passed through the footbath or within 24 h. All cows were scored weekly during milking for DD lesion stage on the hind feet using a 5-point nominal scale. A transition grade was assigned based on whether the DD lesions improved (1) or deteriorated or did not improve (0) from week to week, and was averaged for all cows in the group. Furthermore, from the longitudinal study data, all transitions between different DD lesion stages between the different time points were used in a discrete, first-order Markov chain (state transition matrix) model. In experiment 1, 70 Holstein-Friesian cows with DD lesions present on at least one of their hind feet were allocated to 1 of 2 footbath treatments for 14 wk: (1) 5% CuSO4 each week or (2) 5% CuSO4 every 2 wk. At the end of the study, no active DD lesions were observed in cows in either treatment group, but significantly more cows had no DD lesions (0.48 ± 0.097 vs. 0.24 ± 0.094) and fewer cows had lesions in the healing stage (0.52 ± 0.104 vs. 0.77 ± 0.090) for the weekly compared with the 2-wk footbathing regimen. The number of active DD lesions that the transition matrix model predicted over time was 3 and 8% for weekly and every 2 wk footbathing treatments, respectively. In experiment 2, 64 cows with no DD lesions on either of their hind feet were allocated to 1 of 2 footbath treatment regimens for 14 wk: (1) 5% CuSO4 every 2 wk or (2) 5% CuSO4 each month. At the end of the trial, significantly more cows had no DD (0.80 ± 0.088 vs. 0.65 ± 0.102) and fewer cows had DD lesions in the healing stage (0.20 ± 0.088 vs. 0.35 ± 0.102) in the every 2 wk regimen than in the monthly footbathing regimen. The number of active DD lesions that the transition matrix model predicted over time was low for both footbathing interventions (1 and 4%, respectively). Increasing the interval between footbaths does not appear the most appropriate mechanism for reducing CuSO4 usage.  相似文献

The milk somatic cell count (MSCC) is the basis for abnormal milk control programs. The current legal MSCC limit for bulk tank milk for goats and sheep in the United States is 1000 and 750 × 103/ml, respectively. Milk somatic cell counts for goats are higher than MSCC for cows and sheep. The MSCC for goats free from intramammary infection (IMI) range from 270 to 2,000 × 103/ml. Cell counts for sheep are similar to cows and range from 10 to 200 × 103/ml. Neutro-phils comprise the major cell type in milk from uninfected goats and constitute 45 to 74% of the MSCC, compared with 2 to 28% for sheep and cows. The macrophage is the major cell type in milk from cows and sheep. Milk secretion in goats and sheep is largely apocrine in nature and cytoplasmic particles, similar in size to milk somatic cells, are normal constituents of their milk. Concentrations of cytoplasmic particles in sheep milk average 15 × 103/ml, while goat milk averages 150 × 103/ml. Therefore, to obtain accurate MSCC for goats, only cell counting procedures specific for DNA should be used. While IMI significantly increases MSCC for goats and sheep, noninfectious factors such as parity, stage of lactation, season and milk yield have been related to increased MSCC. An increase in MSCC for goats has been shown to decrease milk and fat yields. Intramammary infusion of antibiotics at dry-off and postmilking teat dipping in goats decreased the rate of new IMI and MSCC. Thus, mastitis control practices shown to be efficacious in cows are also effective in goats.  相似文献

This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of temporarily reducing milking frequency (MF) on the resolution of ketosis and milk production in dairy cows in early lactation. To detect ketosis [blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ≥1.2 mmol/L], Holstein cows were screened daily from 3 to 16 d in milk using a cow-side meter. Cows diagnosed with ketosis (n = 104) were randomly assigned to twice-daily milking (TDM) or reduced to once-daily milking (ODM) for 2 wk, then returned to twice-daily milking. Both treatment groups received a 5-d treatment of an oral propylene glycol drench (PG; 300 g) beginning on the afternoon of the diagnosis; cows received additional 5-d PG treatments if they had a ketotic test result (blood BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L) at least 4 d after finishing the first PG treatment. Blood BHB tests were conducted for the first 3 d after ketosis diagnosis, and then once every 3 d for 21 d of trial (DOT). Milk and milk component data were collected weekly for 15 wk following trial enrollment. The ODM group showed rapidly and markedly decreased blood BHB concentrations (primiparous cows: 1 DOT, 0.92 ODM vs. 1.22 TDM, 15 DOT, 0.55 vs. 0.81 mmol/L; multiparous cows: 1 DOT, 1.01 vs. 1.40, 15 DOT, 0.78 vs. 1.65 mmol/L). In addition, a logistic regression model indicated that ODM cows were less likely to have blood BHB concentrations ≥1.2 mmol/L [primiparous cows: 3 DOT: ODM 1% (95% confidence interval: 0–10%) vs. TDM 43% (30–58%), 15 DOT ODM 0% (0–0.2%) vs. TDM 22% (13–36%); multiparous cows: 3 DOT: ODM 33% (24–44%) vs. TDM 59% (48–69%), 15 DOT ODM 20.9% (13–31%) vs. TDM 64% (53–74%)]. The proportion of ODM cows that required additional treatments of PG were substantially lower than the TDM group (ODM: 39%; TDM: 64%) than the TDM cows during the initial 21-d period. However, during the 2-wk treatment period, cows in the ODM group produced 26% less milk and 25% less energy-corrected milk than the TDM cows. During wk 3 to 15, when all cows were milked twice daily, ODM cows produced less milk (?14%) and energy-corrected milk (?12%) compared with the TDM group. Milk protein percentage was greater, and milk fat percentage and linear score tended to be greater in the ODM group over 15 wk. In conclusion, a 2-wk reduction of MF in ketotic cows from twice to once daily with treatment with PG resolved ketosis and decreased blood BHB concentrations more effectively than treating TDM cows with PG alone. However, the 2-wk MF reduction had immediate and long-term (up to 13 wk after cessation of MF reduction) negative effects on milk production.  相似文献
