Breakage of dairy powder during pneumatic conveying negatively affects the end-customer properties (scoop uniformity and reconstitution). A dilute phase pneumatic conveying system was built to conduct studies into this problem using whey protein isolate powder (WPI) as the test material. Effects of conveying air velocity (V), solid loading rate (SL), pipe bend radius (D), and initial particle size (d) on the level of attrition were experimentally studied. Four quality characteristics were measured before and after conveying: particle size distribution, tapped bulk density, flowability, and wettability. The damaged WPI agglomerates after conveying give rise to many porous holes exposed to the interstitial air. V is the most important input variable and breakage levels rise rapidly at higher airspeeds. The mean volume diameter D[4,3] decreased by around 20% using the largest airspeed of 30 m/s. Powder breakage is also very sensitive to particle size. There appears to be a threshold size below which breakage is almost negligible. By contrast, SL and D show lesser influence on powder breakage. Reflecting the changes in particle size due to breakage, tapped bulk density increases whereas wettability decreases as a result of an increase in conveying air velocity. However, breakage does not show a significant effect on powder flowability as powder damage not only decreases particle size but also changes the particle’s surface morphology.

This study demonstrates a new constant-volume shear test configuration to analyze the stresses in powder beds and evaluate powder flowability. A novel cylindrical shear cell geometry and load cell arrangement allowed precise measurement of the normal stress acting on the shear planes of the powder beds. The stress transmission ratio between the top and shear planes decreased with increasing ratio of the powder bed height in the upper section of the shear cell to the shear cell diameter. This was due to friction between the powder bed and the side wall of the upper section of the shear cell. Using the measured values of the normal stress on the shear planes, the effects of the powder bed height and shear cell diameter were eliminated from the data. In addition, to evaluate the shear properties of the powder beds, the powder yield locus, consolidation yield locus, critical state line, shear cohesion, and void fraction were obtained from a single shear test. The powder yield locus data were used to obtain flow functions.

In this paper, 3 mm diameter (Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8)100−xNbx (x = 0,1,2) glass forming alloys were fabricated by water-cooled copper mould cast. Microstructural characterization reveals that the monolithic Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8 bulk metallic glass exhibits homogenous amorphous structure. While the alloys with Nb addition exhibit a composite structure. For alloys with x = 1, micro-scaled crystalline particles were found to distribute in the glassy matrix. For alloys with x = 2, the microstructure is dominated by a high density of dendritic phase embedded in the glassy matrix. Bonded interface technique was adopted to study the deformation behavior of the alloys underneath the Vickers indentation. It reveals that the subsurface shear patterns are significantly affected by the precipitated phases. The different deformation mechanism of the alloys resulted from the minor Nb addition was put forward and discussed.

In dry fine grinding processes the relevance of particle-particle interactions rises with increasing product fineness. These particle-particle interactions reduce the grinding efficiency and complicate the process control. The adsorption of grinding aid molecules on the product particle surface is a common measure to handle these effects. To ensure an efficient grinding aid application, the impacts of additives on particle and bulk properties, which influence the micro-processes inside the mill, need to be understood. Within this study the effects of several grinding aids on dry fine grinding of limestone in a laboratory vibration mill were investigated. Unlike in many other scientific works, the impacts of grinding aids were analyzed on different levels simultaneously: Grinding success and agglomerate size distributions were evaluated by wet and dry particle size measurements, respectively. Additionally, material coating on the grinding media, powder flowabilities and particle specific surface energies were measured. It was shown that all of the investigated grinding aids influence the grinding efficiency. However, the formation of agglomerates is not necessarily linked to the product fineness. Furthermore, a strong impact of certain grinding aids on the flowability of the product powder was determined. Thereby, the bulk flow behavior also determines the grinding result as it affects the stress mechanism inside the mill. Moreover, a direct relation between surface energy and powder flowability as well as agglomeration behavior could be demonstrated.

Spherical Ti-6Al-4V powders were prepared using radio-frequency plasma spheroidization. A laser particle size analyser, a scanning electron microscope, an X-ray diffractometer and a Freeman FT4 powder rheometer were used to analyse the granulometric parameters, micro-morphologies, phase constitutions and flow properties of the raw and the spheroidized powders, respectively. The spheroidized powders exhibited an almost 100% degree of sphericity, smooth surfaces, favourable dispersion and narrow particle size distribution under appropriate plasma technological parameters. The average particle size of the spheroidized powders increased slightly as compared with that of the raw powders. In addition, the spheroidized powders exhibited higher conditioned bulk density and improved flow properties (including the dynamic flow properties, aeration, compressibility, permeability and shear properties) as compared with those of the raw powders.

In this paper, a new Zr37Al10Ti12.5Cu11.25Ni9Be20.25 bulk metallic glass is reported. The present alloy was prepared by water quenching in a silica tube of φ10×85 mm. The amorphicity of the quenched bulk samples was examined using X-ray diffraction analysis and optical microscopy. The thermal stability was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at a heating rate of 10 K/min. The characteristic data of the bulk metallic glass are presented, including glass transition temperature (Tg) and crystallization temperature (Tx). Results show that the present alloy exhibits large glass forming ability. For comparison with the well-known Zr–Ti–Cu–Ni–Be metallic glass, it was found that aluminum has a little effect on the vitrification of the present alloy but influences physical properties. Specifically, Al enhances the Young's modulus by 21.4% and Vickers hardness by 20% and reduces density by 7.2%.
