Describes several established viewpoints regarding the study of interpersonal communication and points out their place in the school-based consultation research literature. The 3 major perspectives presented are control, coordination, and contextualized interaction. Each perspective is shown to constitute a tool for understanding the process of consultation and is discussed in relation to recent and future research on the process of school-based consultation. Within the control perspective, the prediction and control of the other's responses and the outcome of the situation are seen as paramount. Within the coordination perspective, self and other work together to accomplish their personal and joint goals. Contextualized interaction considers the potential impact of people who are not the primary interactants and therefore moves beyond the emphases of the other 2 perspectives. A behavioral consultation training model is presented that articulates training competency and service goals in school psychology. The model promotes evaluation of the competencies of school psychologists and their impact on the settings in which consultation services are provided. It also focuses on learning and adjustment problems in the socialization process and works on specific target behaviors. Problem-solving strategies are developed in 4 stages: (a) problem identification, (b) problem analysis, (c) intervention, and (d) evaluation. Reviews the perspectives of the drive/structural, object relations, and self-psychology models as to premature termination. A case history is presented of a man in his late twenties who ended therapy after 2.5 yrs. Examining the commonalities in the application of the 3 models, a central issue is apparent: the man's conflicts over dependency. Whether these conflicts are construed as resistance to experiencing passive feminine desires, as separation–individuation conflicts, or as fears of retraumatization by an unattuned self-object, issues of dependence are central to the patient's leaving treatment prematurely. Examines how strategic therapy principles can be applied to consultation practice. These principles focus on a conceptual shift in thinking about a problem and its solution, which allows of more effective and often more innovative solutions to consultation problems. In the 1st principle, failed attempted solutions are seen as reinforcing and maintaining problems. The 2nd principle is the notion that it is necessary to develop solutions that implement 2nd order change. The 3rd concept proposes that it is important to change the consultee's perceptions of the problem in order to assist in developing and implementing new solutions. These principles of strategic consultation can also be applied in many settings and can be incorporated in many other consultation approaches. These principles focus on a conceptual shift in thinking about problems and their solutions. This shift allows for more effective, efficient, and often more innovative solutions to consultation problems. A step-by-step procedure is presented. Marston’s theory for loads on buried pipe dates from the early 1900s and is commonly used for design. The derivation nevertheless contains a rudimentary error whose effect was neutralized by empirical adjustments based on full-scale experiments. The discrepancy went undiscovered until the 1940s when Terzaghi noted an inconsistency relative to failures of cellular cofferdams. The error then was addressed by Krynine, but no attempt was made to make design adjustments until development of a soil arching theory for retaining walls in the 1980s. The error is simply stated: The Rankine active pressure coefficient Ka represents a ratio of principal stresses, and by definition a principal stress cannot contribute to friction. The history, significance, and lessons to be learned are discussed, and suggestions are made for modifications of the Marston presentation.  相似文献

Discusses the psychodynamic, systems, behavioral, social psychological, and sociobiological perspectives on romantic jealousy. The psychodynamic approach views jealousy as the result of unresolved childhood experiences and as best treated by individual psychotherapy. The systems approach views jealousy as the result of the dynamic in a particular relationship and as best treated by couple therapy. The behavioral approach views jealousy as a learned response that can be unlearned. The social psychological approach views jealousy as determined by the social environment and as best treated by shifting from a dispositional to a situational attribution. The sociobiological perspective views jealousy as innate and its treatment application involves breaking couples' fallacy of uniqueness regarding jealousy. This article comments on the importance of competent organizational executive leadership and the practice of executive coaching in professional consultation. As it is currently practiced, executive coaching appears to be an eclectic mix of concepts and methods that are being applied by a variety of consultants who have accepted assignments to work with individual executives. The independent psychodiagnostic clinic continues to be an important consultation resource for school districts and parents with educationally confusing children. The Psychoeducational Teaching Laboratory at Syracuse University utilizes a multidimensional consultation process to address the needs of all 3 parties. During the year the range of APA knowledge dissemination activities has been extended; work of experimental psychologists will be viewed by millions as a recently completed educational TV series titled "Focus on Behavior"; an attractive APA booklet on opportunities and requirements for careers in psychology has been prepared. "The pervasiveness of psychology in our culture is readily documented." Criticism and unfavorable public reaction regarding psychology center on issues of invasion of privacy, denial of freedom, deception, and behavior control. Explores the effects of traditional Asian cultural values, family roles, and behavioral norms upon the psychodynamic formulation and treatment of the case of a 36-yr-old female Chinese immigrant schizophrenic. The main principles of Control Mastery theory, a cognitive approach to psychoanalytic psychotherapy, are presented and its Plan Formulation Method is reviewed, from the perspective of post-modern theories of life-narrative transformations and relational theories of mind.
