It is critical that program curriculums are periodically reviewed and modified to reflect the ongoing changes in technology and job market demands. A process used to evaluate and assess the computer science curriculum at prince sultan university (PSU) is the curriculum review workshop (CRW). As part of its program self-study process and in meeting the requirements of the Saudi national commission on academic accreditation and assessment (NCAAA), the computer and information sciences department at PSU organized and hosted the first computer science curriculum review workshop in Saudi Arabia. Faculty from academic institutions across the country, were provided a valuable opportunity to share experiences and identify best practices in computer education. They identified areas of improvements and developed actions plans for courses. They also discussed incorporating job market needs into the curriculum. This paper will describe the process of planning, executing and evaluating the CRW. It will discuss the workshop goals, derived from the NCAAA Quality Standards for Post Secondary Institutions: these goals are to define relevant learning outcomes, evaluate effective teaching strategies and verify standards of student assessments. A model visualizing the CRW process is presented and explained. This model is composed of three components; pre-workshop planning activities, the discussion topics during the workshop, and post-workshop activities such as evaluating the CRW and defining areas of improvement, and publishing the results on the CRW website.  相似文献

One of the key factors influencing project success or failure is project management. Unfortunately, effective management of software projects is not in practice. To meet the requirements of enterprises, majors in computer in more and more universities offer software project management course. However, as Reif and Marti put it, "successful software project management, like programming, is not a skill that students will master from a single course of instruction". In this work, we present a teaching mode based on project-driven for software project management course, and describe it from the aspects of training objectives, teaching implementation, the student's job, and assessment mechanism, and finally provide a summary and analysis of the characteristics of this teaching mode as well as the effect of the curriculum practice.  相似文献

There is a disagreement among researchers in regard to academic dishonesty in online as compared to traditional learning settings. Based on this, the aim of the current study was to investigate the connection between academic dishonesty in the virtual versus face-to face teaching/learning settings in relation to students' learning motivation, while examining the phenomenon from a cross-cultural perspective. The sample consisted of 1,574 participants-803 from USA and 771 from Israel. The results showed that there are significant differences in students' likelihood to engage in academic dishonesty based on the type of course, such that students in face-to-face courses are more likely to engage in acts of academic dishonesty than their counterparts in online courses. In addition, it was found that students' propensity to engage in academic dishonesty is explained by motivational orientation, type of course and age. The findings were consistent across student groups in both countries. The phenomenon can be explained by the fact that more intrinsically motivated students self-select online as opposed to traditional classroom courses, and because online instruction facilitates increasing levels of intrinsic motivation.  相似文献

This paper describes a combination of approaches to provoke deeper comprehension in various topics in computer architecture details to computer science students. It also presents the outcome of this effort. The proposed educational approaches apply to a sequence of two courses on computer architecture and organization. The first course explains basic notions of execution on a processor, as well as hardware details. The tools used are simulation, assembly language and C programming. The second course deals with more advanced matters of computer organization. There, the authors introduced building a simple Linux device driver as a new approach for getting hands-on experience, on issues related to interactions of the operating system kernel with the memory, I/O, peripherals, and bus system components.  相似文献

In the Philippines, the K+I2 system is newly introduced and the readiness for its implementation undoubtedly made the teaching community confused and confounded. Thus, extra efforts are being done to upgrade and update all instructional materials. Even it" the Department of Education are preparing the faculty members through trainings, seminars and providing them with syllabus accompanying the new curriculum, still the confidence for the coming teaching assignments for the additional two years in the system is vet3.' Iow~ The faculty members are now strategizing teaching methodology for the subjects they have to handle through upgrading not only their knowledge but also the teaching materials they are to use in their classroom. With the changing environment, the learning style of students also advances. Children are now exposed to various modern gadgets, thus, they learn more advanced knowledge about their environment. These modern medium must be an advantage to the teaching profession. Teachers must know how and what the children learn through these medium and create some learning materials that will augment this knowledge in schools. This study is a partial analysis of the learning style of students in different levels of the educational system and the knowledge they acquire through different modern medium and test the gap between this and the knowledge they must learn in school. Control system design packages like MATLAB, MATRIXX, Control C, SIMNON, etc. have become essential ingredients of both undergraduate and graduate courses in the fields of systems and controls. The use of MATLAB and its companion toolboxes in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses was reported by many educators in the past. The experience with the use of SIMULINK and MATLAB in Intelligent Control Course is introduced which is offered to graduate students at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA). The use of SIMULINK for simulation of intelligent control of their behavior is emphasized. The MATLAB features useful in this course are presented. In [1] a procedure for bias-free estimation of the autocorrelation function is introduced for equidistantly sampled data with randomly occurring samples being invalid. The method incorporates sample-and-hold interpolation of the missing data points. The occurring dynamic error of the primary estimate of the correlation function is treated by a deconvolution procedure with two parameters c0 and c1 with c0+2c1=1, which are the on-diagonal and the aside-diagonal parameters of a specific correction matrix (at all lag times except zero). The parameters c0 and c1 were obtained as a function of the probability α of a sample to be valid by numerical simulation. The traditional rounding and filleting morphological filters are biased. Hence, as r grows, the rounding Rr (S) of S shrinks and the filleting Fr (S) grows. A shape S is r-regular when Rr (S) = Fr (S) = S. The combinations Fr (Rr (S)) and Rr (Fr (S)) produce nearly r-regular shapes, but retain a bias: Fr (Rr (S)) is usually smaller than S and Rr (Fr (S)) is larger. To overcome this bias, we propose a new filter, called Mason. The r-mortar Mr (S) of S is Fr (S)–Rr (S), and the stability of a point P with respect to S is the smallest value of r for which P belongs to Mr (S). Stability provides important information about the shape’s imbedding that cannot be obtained through traditional topological or differential analysis tools. Fr (Rr (S)) and Rr (Fr (S)) only affect space in Mr (S). For each maximally connected component of Mr (S), Mason performs either Fr (Rr (S)) or Rr (Fr (S)), choosing the combination that alters the smallest portion of that component. Hence, Mason acts symmetrically on the shape and on its complement. Its output is guaranteed to have a smaller symmetric difference with the original shape than that of either combination Fr (Rr (S)) or Rr (Fr (S)). Many previously proposed shape simplification algorithms were focused on reducing the combinatorial storage or processing costs of a shape at the expense of the smoothness and regularity or altered the shape in regular portions that did not exhibit any high frequency complexity.
